This past year was full of dramatic ups and downs for the world of movies. A handful of massive blockbusters that had been held back due to the pandemic finally made their debut, some surprising international breakthroughs did well in theaters and on streaming, and at least a few indie movies connected with mainstream audiences and racked up some big box office numbers. Long time entertainment reporter, and currently the editor at the Sioux City Journal, Bruce Miller, is joined by co-host Chris Lay and extra special guest Jared McNett, to wrap up their year-end collection of episodes with a conversation about the absolute very best films of the year. On this week episode I'm pleased to be joined by Simon Abrams, author of the gorgeous new book The Northman: A Call to the Gods. In it, we discuss how the book came about, some of the fascinating tidbits he picked up while interviewing cast and crew of the viking epic, and how Robert Eggers helped transport audiences back to both a different time and a different mindset. If you haven't seen The Northman on the big screen, you really should: it's monumental in every sense of the world. Folks who live in New York City will have a chance to do just that at the Museum of the Moving Image this Sunday: there's a double feature of The Northman and Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, which Eggers cites as an inspiration for his Viking epic. Sandwiched between the showings will be a book signing. So if you like what you hear here, head over to get a copy of the book! And make sure to share this episode with a friend! From visionary director Robert Eggers, The Northman follows a young Viking prince (Alexander Skarsgård) on a quest to avenge his father's murder. Eggers and his co-writer, Sjón, chatted with Final Draft about the collaborative process of working on the script. "I had lunch with Alexander Skarsgård, who said that he wanted to make a Viking movie," Eggers said, "and I said, 'I can make a Viking movie, and I know the perfect person to write it with me,' and luckily, Sjón wanted to... I wrote the first draft, and from there, we just [passed] it back and forth for eternity, all through production, all through post-production." When asked if they would recommend collaborating with a writing partner on a project, Sjón said, "I really recommend working with a co-writer on films. I've written poetry and novels and all sorts of things, but when it comes to film, I really think it works when you're writing with someone you know because film is already a medium of collaboration, and to go into it from the beginning, from the story level as a collaboration, I think is really great." The Northman is now available on Amazon Prime. Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes! Now available on Google Podcasts!

This week, we watch the third movie from the acclaimed director of The Witch and The Lighthouse. This movie aims to be the defining film about Vikings, drawing from every piece of known history of the time, and expanding on it with approval of expert historians. While uneven, this film has many moments of beauty and craft. The Northman (2022), directed by Robert Eggers.

Journey with Jared and Michael to Valhöll on this week's episode as we discuss The Northman.
This week marks the physical release of one of the year's best and most visceral films, “The Northman.” Directed by Robert Eggers, the film follows Viking Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) on a lifelong journey of revenge against to man who killed his father, stole his mother, and threw his life into ruin. "The Northman," is a primal, visceral action movie, a meditative somber journey on the nature of revenge and a psychedelic art film all rolled up into one and it's easily one of the best movies of the year. In celebration of the Blu-ray/DVD release this week, we've decided to share our contributor, Elena Lazic's interviews with director Robert Eggers and Producer/Actor Alexander Skarsgård, who both worked tirelessly to make sure the film look and feels as realistic as possible. You can listen to both of our interviews with the two in this podcast conversation. Enjoy. WE ARE BACK! Hello everyone and welcome back to a BRAND NEW episode of In-Out-Delete! We return from our hiatus with a round-up of every new movie we saw in the month of April. So tune to find out what we thought of these movies that you probably already forgot about!
Teacher, student, creator, are these the elements which make up a fully actualized human being? In this episode I do my best to argue for that fact. Recently I saw a quite touching clip on instagram taken from a Louis CK's show and it was talking about love. I offer a few thoughts on that. Then we move into a discussion of deep fake technology and Kendrick Lamar's new album, specifically for the reason that he so originally blends these two elements together. And if that wasn't enough for you we hit up talking about the new cinematic masterpiece which is the Northman. A wickedly directed film from the guy who directed The Witch as well as The Lighthouse.
