Toby Harnden is the author of one of the best-selling and well regarded books on the IRA and the troubles, “Bandit Country”. Toby's book lifted the lid on the area where is was most dangerous to be a British soldier in during the conflict and the IRA brigade that made it that way. One of my most requested guests and an author that I've been dying to speak to, Toby and I spoke about their history, actions & legacy as well as the reasons why this small rural area was the thorn in the army's side throughout the entire conflict. We discussed the IRA's guerrilla attacks on the British Army in South Armagh, the 'Slab” Murphy family, Gaddafi & Libyan arms shipments, the anti-helicopter sub-battle within the conflict, the deployment of the SAS, the infamous 90's sniper teams and much more. PLEASE HELP OUT THE SHOW WITH A DONATION IF YOU CAN SPARE IThttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/goodlistenerpodcast00:00 Intro 16:20 Stats & Facts on The South Armagh IRA 21:45 Thomas “Slab” Murphy & the Murphy family 43:00 1970's1:03:50 Informers 1:07:50 Sectarian m*rders 1:10:00 THE SAS (1976)1:15:14 WARRENPOINT 1:28:00 Glasdrumann scrapyard counter-ambush 1:33:30 Libya and Gaddafi 1:42:05 Richard Johnson & the American connection 1:50:45 Anti-Helicopter War 2:00:00 “SNIPER AT WORK” (1990's)2:22:25 1990's actions

Toby Harnden, Royal Navy veteran, and award-winning author talks about his best-selling book “First Casualty: The CIA's mission to avenge 9/11”. It follows the thrilling story of Team Alpha, an eclectic band of linguists, tribal experts, and elite warriors, who were the first Americans to operate behind enemy lines in Afghanistan. The veteran author offers vivid details about how CIA Officers and Special Forces soldiers were dropped into the mountains of northern Afghanistan on October 17, 2001 with limited resources, even riding on horseback into remote areas to start our attack on those who attacked us. Harnden also reveals the political infighting in Washington and how the Secretary of Defense was angry that the CIA had taken the lead on the mission. And we hear details about the extraordinary members of Team Alpha, and the brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice defending all Americans, still reeling from the attack on our nation.Harnden also shares details about an interesting and blood thirsty warlord the US teamed up with, in order to crush Al Qaeda. The bitter irony is that the US initially had success eliminating Al Qaeda and Taliban forces this way … One can only imagine how different things would be today if we had continued their mission, instead of moving the fight to Iraq.Get this book and more about Toby Harnden here:https://tobyharnden.com/Contact CBS Eye on Veteransphil@connectingvets.comFollow on Twitter:@philbriggsVet @eyeonveteransNote: This episode originally aired in February 2023.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Seeger on the CIA's 2001 insertion into Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the early days of the Afghanistan War. Seeger, who's had a 27 year career in federal service, led Alpha Team, one of the first CIA paramilitary teams to be dropped behind enemy lines in Afghanistan, and provides us with an oral history of the pre-war intelligence operations and CIA's efforts to consolidate the Afghan Resistance's efforts against the Taliban. Seeger, who can't necessarily discuss some of the specifics of his role on the ground in Afghanistan, nevertheless guides us through the history of the operations, including a discussion on the uprising at Qala-i-Jangi compound near Mazar-i-Sharif that resulted in the death of his team mate Mike Spann -- America's first casualty in the twenty year Afghanistan War. Since retiring from federal service, J.R. Seeger has written a litany of thriller novels, which include the MIKE4 series, which focuses on a family of special operations officers spanning between World War II and the present day.J.R.'s story and that of Team Alpha is also covered in Toby Harnden's book First Casualty. Toby Harnden is an award-winning author and veteran foreign correspondent. In 2012 he won the Orwell Prize for his book ‘Dead Men Risen' - an account of beleaguered British soldiers fighting desperately to prevent the Taliban from seizing Afghanistan's Helmand province. As foreign correspondent, he reported from 33 countries for The Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and The Sunday Times, including postings in Belfast, Baghdad and Washington DC. In this in-depth interview, Toby shares the inspiration and journey behind his new book ‘First Casualty' - which is the prime account of CIA Team Alpha in their own words - the first Americans to be dropped behind enemy lines in Afghanistan after 9/11; reflects on how a decade serving in the Royal Navy inspired him to become a foreign correspondent, and better equipped him to report on “real stuff, real people - war, blood, and guts;” and discusses why much of his work is dedicated to covering PTSD - including presenting a BBC Panorama special, with the shock revelation that more British soldiers and veterans took their own lives last year than were killed in action.

Previously based in London, Belfast, Jerusalem, Baghdad, and Washington, DC, he lives in Virginia. After two hours, we had covered a lot about First Casualty, a little about Toby and we left a lot on the table for next time. As I said on the episode, First Casualty had the emotional impact to me of reading an old high school yearbook and remembering when I first heard about Mike Spann or ODAs on the ground partnering with the Northern Alliance. Even the memory of how America was in 2001 seems so dated. Toby captures it well and seeing the impact the next 20 years have had on some of the key players in post-9/11 Afgahnistan is instructive and moving. Toby's a great talker and I was struck by the similarities between soldiering and journalists when it comes to FOMO and the need to be where the action is. Considering how restricted US movement was in late 2020, I was feeling a little FOMO at hearing his account as the last western journalist to talk with General Dostum. Though he served in the Navy for almost a decade, Steve is famously known as a journalist and author of 3 books including Bandit Country: The IRA & South Armagh and Dead Men Risen: The Welsh Guards and the Defining Story of Britain's War in Afghanistan. Toby talks about how he entered into journalism which seemed like a natural progression from his time in the Navy. While serving, he got to witness the action in Ireland with the IRA. These events led up to his first book which unraveled the murders of senior RUC officers with Garda (Irish police) collusion in 1989. His next book Dead Men Risen reached number 4 on The Sunday Times bestseller list and earned him the Orwell Prize for books in 2012. Toby details in today's show the background of this book that started with the events of 9/11 and the heroic men he interviewed to create the story. In Toby's latest book First Casualty: The Untold Story of the CIA's Secret Mission to Avenge 9/11, he looks back on the 8 men of Team Alpha who led the charge behind enemy lines on October 17, 2001, especially the heroism of David Tyson and martyrdom of Mike Spann. Toby discusses gritty details that set the stage for the tragedy in the Fort of War and the great cooperation between CIA, Green Berets, SPS, Navy SEALs which, during the early stages of the war, were unheard of.  Toby also shares radical details about the operation taken from firsthand sources, including a hilarious account of psychological warfare where a lady Navy pilot's singing was used to intimidate the notoriously misogynistic Taliban, an on-the-fly idea of their bloodthirsty warlord companion. This interview should have lasted for five hours. I had the privilege of speaking with author, journalist, and veteran Toby Harnden today about his life and experiences across the globe. After serving ten years in the Royal Navy, Toby went on to be a reporter covering terrorism, strife and insurgency in places such as Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe, Iraq, Afghanistan and Jerusalem. In his experiences, Toby often walked the razor's edge in his effort to gather information from all sides involved in a conflict. Toby is also the author of Bandit Country, Dead Men Risen, and his newest book, First Casualty. First Casualty tells the story of the CIA's mission in the opening stages of the war in Afghanistan, which culminated in death of CIA operative Mike Spann at Qala-i-Jangi during a prisoner uprising.  I will absolutely have Toby back on the show, because it was evident after this interview that I had only scratched the surface of his knowledge and experience - and I didn't even get to offer him a glass of bourbon. In this episode, accomplished author and veteran foreign correspondent Toby Harnden joins the Crew Reviews to discuss First Casualty: The Untold Story of the CIA Mission to Avenge 9/11, his riveting account of the first U.S. military action in Afghanistan.     "Harnden skillfully interweaves dramatic action sequences with the backstories of the book's central figures, and briskly highlights the failures of U.S. policy in Afghanistan. Readers will be swept up in this little-known chapter of America's 'forever war.'" –Publishers Weekly America is reeling; Al-Qaeda has struck and thousands are dead. The country scrambles to respond, but the Pentagon has no plan for Afghanistan—where Osama bin Laden masterminded the attack and is protected by the Taliban. Instead, the CIA steps forward to spearhead the war. Eight CIA officers are dropped into the mountains of northern Afghanistan on October 17, 2001. They are Team Alpha, an eclectic band of linguists, tribal experts, and elite warriors: the first Americans to operate inside Taliban territory. Their covert mission is to track down Al- Qaeda and stop the terrorists from infiltrating the United States again.     First Casualty places you with Team Alpha as the CIA rides into battle on horseback alongside the warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum. In Washington, DC, few trust that the CIA men, the Green Berets, and the Americans' outnumbered Afghan allies can prevail before winter sets in. On the ground, Team Alpha is undeterred. The Taliban is routed but hatches a plot with Al-Qaeda to hit back. Hundreds of suicidal fighters, many hiding weapons, fake a surrender and are transported to Qala-i Jangi—the “Fort of War.”   Team Alpha's Mike Spann, an ex-Marine, and David Tyson, a polyglot former Central Asian studies academic, seize America's initial opportunity to extract intelligence from men trained by bin Laden—among them a young Muslim convert from California. The prisoners revolt and one CIA officer falls—the first casualty in America's longest war, which will last two decades. The other CIA man shoots dead the Al-Qaeda jihadists attacking his comrade. To survive, he must fight his way out against overwhelming odds. Toby Harnden reported from 33 countries as a foreign correspondent while based in London, Belfast, Jerusalem, Baghdad and Washington D.C. Toby brings his well-informed insights about some of these initial players: Including David Tyson, JR Seeger, Alex Hernandez and their ride on horseback North with Dostum to Mazar I Sharif, along with the first casualty, Johnny Michael Spann and the events at the Qala-I Jangi fort complex.  We discuss the complexity and the accomplishment of how those few intrepid officers and operators transcended traditions, tribes, allegiances and history in an operation that holds clues to the future of Afghan resistance to the Taliban.  More about the author at:  Tobyharnden.comI hope you've enjoyed listening to this episode. Excerpt “By December 2001, ten CIA teams—including Team Alpha and totaling a few dozen CIA officers—had secured victory across Afghanistan. Fighting alongside them was Special Forces troops operating symbiotically with US airpower. Among those troops was a unit from Britain's Special Boat Service (SBS), operating in the tradition of their country's Special Operations Executive (SOE), which inspired the OSS. Jettisoning a directive that restricted their ability to fight, the SBS headed toward the sound of gunfire. The complexity of Afghanistan was apparent to Team Alpha. False surrenders, switching sides, warlord machinations, prisoner abuse, suicide attacks, and ethnic ferment were facts of life. This was a country—if it was a country at all—that could not be controlled. After the surviving members of Team Alpha left Afghanistan, the US military took over and American forces became occupiers rather than insurgents. Conventional troops poured into the country, and fortified bases were established.”Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)

I recently talked to Toby Harnden, FIRST CASUALTY: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE CIA MISSION TO AVENGE 9/11.  Toby's in-depth account quickly became a must-read for me.  We must revisit history to know what the future may hold, and this book does that; it tells you what those first weeks in combat were like with an enemy we may see again.  Excerpt “By December 2001, ten CIA teams—including Team Alpha and totalling a few dozen CIA officers—had secured victory across Afghanistan. Fighting alongside them were Special Forces troops operating symbiotically with US air power. Conventional troops poured into the country, and fortified bases were established.”#afghanistan #CIA #greenberets #tobyharnden #theprotectors #littlebrownbookspublishingSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)
