POPULARITY
Behind all the great things Kenosha has to offer, there are many people behind the scenes who bring these things for life. And for over 50 years, Frank Carmichael has been one of those people. From his early days as a popular Tremper student, to becoming a movie theater owner by age 20 and a magazine publisher not long after, Frank has always asked the question, “What is there to do in this town?” and responded with options. Currently, Happenings Magazine is approaching its 49th year providing the area with free weekly print entertainment; the Kenosha Comedy Club continues to bring top notch entertainment to Downtown Kenosha, and music festivals like Peanut Butter & Jam, Tribute Island, and Cheese-A-Palooza rock our town. And we forgot to mention he is also the operator of the Lakeside Deck at Wyndham Garden. And, he hosts a radio show with his wife, Kim along with Reanna weekdays from 9am - 11am on AM1050 WLIP (streaming at wlip.com) What doesn't Frank do? Not much, you will learn as we connect with Kenosha icon Frank Carmichael. To find out all about the upcoming events, flip through this week's copy of Happenings Magazine.

This week, we share a recent Soundings Seminar conversation with Tremper Longman, a distinguished biblical scholar and prolific author. As we all know, it's a big election year in America. How might the Bible speak to and inform our vote as Christians? Tremper offers a thoughtful and grounded response to that question, drawing on insights from his 2020 book, The Bible and the Ballot: Using Scripture in Political Decisions. Rev. Bill Haley facilitates the conversation, which is co-sponsored by Restoration Anglican Church in Arlington, VA.View Our Full Archive of Soundings SeminarsExplore Coracle's "Christian Discipleship & American Politics" Resource Collectioninthecoracle.org | @inthecoracleSupport the show

Doit-on tremper les étagères du frigidaire au Mikvé ?
The 2024 election is fast approaching and many Christians are still left wondering whose policies best represent the Bible's teachings. Today, we're talking to theologian and author of “The Bible and the Ballot,” Tremper Longman, to learn how Christians can vote in a way that best reflects biblical values. First, Tremper tells us why he decided to write a book on politics in the first place. How much does he believe that Christians should participate in the political process? And how much should the Church participate? Does the Bible have something to contribute to contentious political issues like abortion, immigration, and race? What are loving, biblical responses to these topics? And should Christians push for laws around such issues? Plus, how much should Christians consider a political candidate's character over their policies? And learn why he says that Christians don't actually “need” religious liberty. Listen now! Have you benefitted personally from Truth Over Tribe or seen it have a positive effect on someone you know? have you used the podcast, book, or blog as a catalyst for conversation on polarizing topics? Ron Hogen Green, Sensei - ZMM - 5/23/24 - From The True Dharma Eye, Case 75 - Yantou's "Sit Still" - How do we respond to life's complications? Sitting in stillness is the simple practice, but in itself can become a hiding place. The Three Worlds—form, formlessness and desire—all arrive together at once, so how do we practice stillness in the midst of it all? Using a koan from Master Yantou, Hogen Sensei reminds us that true freedom, to let go and be totally alive to the suchness of this moment, is within our capacity to let go of fixed views about anything.

Across America, more than 400,000 children are in foster care. These days, it's largely due to the nation's opioid epidemic. The number of children and youth entering care due to abuse and neglect related to their parents' substance use disorders has skyrocketed. Meanwhile, the number of foster families can't keep up with demand. But an organization called America's Kids Belong is hoping to change that... working in states nationwide to empower communities to dramatically improve the experience and outcomes for children in foster care. Lauren Tremper is among those leading the charge to combat what experts call a solvable crisis.

Scholar, author, and Professor, Tremper takes us into one of my favorite books of the Bible to discuss how we can best understand it when we see it in light of the Old Testament. What is Biblical wisdom literature? How does Proverbs fit into the wisdom literature and how does one apply it? What does the fear of the Lord mean and how can one cultivate a healthy fear of the Lord? We discussed these questions and more with Dr. Tremper Longman who has done extensive work in the Old Testament, specifically in wisdom literature. That's right! Four fifths (about) of the Bible is the Old Testament. Joining Andrew and James on the podcast for this episode is Tremper Longman. Dr. Longman has spent his life (since his conversion as a young man) studying the Old Testament and has become an authority on it. An author of many books and articles, including widely-used textbooks on Old Testament studies used in colleges and seminaries, Tremper offers us a way to appreciate the Old Testament as anticipating Christ and as a way to appreciate the Old Testament as it was written to its original audience. Why the latter? Well even before the God-took-flesh, the Scriptures, as the Old Testament on its own terms and in its original setting, fully sufficed to their audience. Tune in for a great discussion on the importance of the Old Testament, its theological relevance for Christians, and (dare we say) its historical reliability. The books by Tremper referenced at length in this episode: Confronting Old Testament Controversies: Pressing Questions about Evolution, Sexuality, History and Violence (Baker Books, 2019) http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/books/confronting-old-testament-controversies/380390 A Biblical History of Israel (along with Iain Provan & V. Welcome to "Stories from the Skintrack", a special four-part podcast series on the show to help you learn about avalanche and mountain safety through the personal experiences of four special guests. We will be talking about close calls and fatalities, tips and tricks on getting into backcountry skiing and splitboarding, climate change, inclusion, mentorship and much more. My first guest is Bruce Tremper, one of the top avalanche experts in the US, author of the well-known book Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain, former director of the UAC for 30 years, and an avid photographer, skier and adventurer. I met Bruce when I was 15 years old, at the site where my half-brother's body was recovered after his party encountered a glide avalanche during their ascent into Stairs Gulch in Utah's Big Cottonwood Canyon. On this episode, we talk about how that shaped my desire to learn about avalanche safety, to develop my mountain sense and to always come home to my family and how I plan to honor my half-brother, Martin's, legacy. Bruce shares his backstory, his why and his tips for people getting into the backcountry. Stories from the Skintrack are brought to you in partnership/collaboration with Backcountry.com. The first item ever sold on Backcountry.com was an avalanche beacon out of a garage in Park City, UT way back in 1996. On today's show, Tim welcomes theologian scholar and author Tremper Longman III. Tremper discusses his newly published book, The Bible and the Ballot: Using Scripture in Political Decisions. Christians regularly invoke the Bible to support their positions on many controversial political topics--gay marriage, poverty, war, religious liberty, immigration, the environment, taxes, etc.--and this book will help facilitate those conversations. Tremper explains his desire to write this book, and how the Bible constructs our daily conversations, attitudes, and overall belief system. Tremper also touches briefly on another book he recently wrote, Confronting Old Testament Controversies: Pressing Questions about Evolution, Sexuality, History, and Violence. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Tremper Longman is distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Westmont College. He has written over thirty books, including commentaries on Genesis, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Daniel, and Nahum. In this lecture, Tremper talks about the structure of Genesis using the Toledot Formula. Toledot is a Hebrew word meaning an account or a story that came from a person or event, in this example, the story of Adam. Longman also discusses an additional way of subdividing the book of Genesis into three sections: The primeval, the patriarchal, and the Joseph story. Tremper explains that Genesis is written like a historical story that reveals God through space and time, showing us God's intent to restore relationship with his people. If you like what you hear, visit our website at MasterLectures.ZondervanAcademic.com, where you can watch more of Tremper's lectures on Genesis, along with thousands of other lectures on the Bible and theology.
Our guests today share their first hand experience with the events of September 11, 2001, along with a message of what should our response to catastrophe be.
