EA - Global Innovation Fund projects its impact to be 3x GiveWell Top Charities by jh

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Global Innovation Fund projects its impact to be 3x GiveWell Top Charities, published by jh on June 1, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) is a non-profit, impact-first investment fund headquartered in London that primarily works with mission-aligned development agencies (USAID, SIDA, Global Affairs Canada, UKAID). Through grants, loans and equity investments, they back innovations with the potential for social impact at a large scale, whether these are new technologies, business models, policy practices or behavioural insights. Recently, they made a bold but little publicized projection in their 2022 Impact Report (page 18): "We project every dollar that GIF has invested to date will be three times as impactful as if that dollar had been spent on long-lasting, insecticide-treated bednets... This is three times higher than the impact per dollar of Givewell's top-rated charities, including distribution of anti-malarial insecticide-treated bednets. By Givewell's estimation, their top charities are 10 times as cost-effective as cash transfers." The report says they have invested $112m since 2015. This is a short post to highlight GIF's projection to the EA community and to invite comments and reactions. Here are a few initial points: It's exciting to see an organization with relatively traditional funders comparing its impact to GiveWell's top charities (as well as cash transfers). I would want to see more information on how they did their calculations before taking a view on their projection. In any case, based on my conversations with GIF, and what I've understood about their methodology, I think their projection should be taken seriously. I can see many ways it could be either an overestimate or an underestimate. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org

Speaker: William A. Masters, Professor, Tufts University Interventions and innovation can lower the price of individual foods, but healthy eating depends on access to a mix of foods from diverse sources. How has the overall cost of meeting dietary needs changed over time worldwide, and in Africa and South Asia specifically? What determines the cost of a healthy diet? And how does affordability affect dietary intake and health status in different locales? To answer these questions, Changing Access to Nutritious Diets in Africa and South Asia (CANDASA) (https://sites.tufts.edu/candasa) has been using new food price indexes that account for food substitutions to meet nutritional needs to evaluate food systems all over the world, including in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Malawi, and Tanzania. This seminar will present the outcomes of CANDASA’s work to date, with a panel discussion featuring field researchers from each country to discuss the local and global implications of their results. On this episode, I discuss waste, upcycling and making social impact with Wecyclers' CEO, Bilikiss Abiola.   I met Bilikiss in 2015, and the first thing that struck me was her passion. Bilikiss is a force. And I have huge respect for her and what she is doing. It was a pleasure to sit down with her to have this interview in Lagos.   Wecyclers offers a convenient recycling service using a fleet of low-cost cargo bikes. In exchange for waste, low-income households earn redeemable points which can be used to buy food and other items.   In April, Wecyclers partnered with Lagos State Waste Management (LAWMA) for the #LagosIsRecycling Campaign in partnership with Unilever, DHL, Nigerian Bottling Company, UKAID, FCMB, and others. More recently, Bilikiss was awarded the prestigious 'International Grand Prize' at Le Monde's Smart Cities Innovation Awards for her work with Wecyclers.   In this episode, you'll learn: how Wecyclers is disrupting and reshaping existing scavenger economy, and creating new job in the process How to convince your nin-Nigerian cofounder to move to Nigeria from MIT If you have a B2B product, learn how to write cold emails and hassle people to give you a meeting We are at ground zero of waste management in Africa. There are lots of money to unlock and lots of work to be done How to shape the future by building platforms that other people can build on
