At trial and at sentencing, Lorenzo's many surviving victims testified against him, including the impactful statements made by Albert Perkins, who Lorenzo kidnapped and assaulted in February of 2000. The testimony and eventual plea deals made by both Schweickert and Lorenzo would provide great insight into their MOs and victimology. But at what cost?Because by some accounts, investigators and the prosecution were as hard on the survivors as they were Lorenzo himself. This episode was written, researched, edited, and produced by Josh HallmarkResources:Fox 13 Tampa Bay: https://www.fox13news.com/news/nothing-behind-his-eyes-his-face-was-contorted-victim-of-steven-lorenzo-woke-up-panickedThe Tampa Bay Times: https://www.tampabay.com/archive/2006/01/28/defiant-lorenzo-gets-200-years/The Netflix documentary Victim/Suspect: https://www.netflix.com/title/81288561Featuring:Albert PerkinsThis is a Studio BOTH/AND production: bothand.fyiFor an ad-free experience: patreon.com/studiobothandMusic by: Circles, Field, Yehezkel Raz, and AhimsaFeatured music by: Rufus Wainwright

One of the things that makes Alyssa angriest is when she sees men denying the scope of our national sexual violence epidemic by claiming that there are many false reports of sexual assault, and therefore victims cannot be trusted. In their stunning documentary Victim/Suspect, reporter Rae de Leon and director Nancy Schwartzman dig into cases where women were charged with filing false reports but insist they were telling the truth. What the investigation showed about police conduct when investigating reports of sexual assault was shocking. Rae and Nancy join us to discuss. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Nothing could be more sterile – or more frightening – than a cold, spare interrogation room. Victims and suspects alike are brought into these spaces where they are questioned by police and videotaped for later use as evidence. But what happens when the victim, even without realizing it, becomes the suspect – and the suspect becomes the lead witness? This is the disturbing truth uncovered in Nancy Schwartzman's (“Roll Red Roll”) probing new documentary “Victim/Suspect”. Nancy and producer/main subject Rae de Leon, the investigative reporter who broke the story for “Reveal”, join Ken to discuss the tragic circumstances and byzantine reporter's journey at the heart of this Orwellian nightmare. What incentives drive some police officers to doubt the stories of sexual assault victims and instead use the interrogation process to gather “evidence” against them for filing a false police report? How did a documentary filmmaker and an investigative reporter join forces and navigate the best way to work together? And in what ways are the stories of the women featured in the film and Rae's reporting being used to change police department practices across the country? The interrogation room will be better off for it. “Victim/Suspect” is currently streaming on Netflix. Jim and Laura continue their conversation with investigative journalist Rae de Leon and filmmaker Nancy Schwartzman who disclose even more shocking details not shown in their new documentary “Victim/Suspect”. You will not believe the rest of the story in Dynanie Bermeo's case regarding a suspect who police refused to investigate in her sexual assault. Nancy asks Jim and Laura for their take on reasons for the persistent obfuscation and lack of accountability by the law enforcement departments covered in the documentary. #netflix #victimsuspect #sexualassault #believevictims #centerforinvestigativereporting #EmmaMannion #DyanieBermeo #MeganRondini #NikkiYovino #RachelDeLeon #NancySchwartzman #documentary #filmmaker #crime #ExpertAnalysis #FBI #Profilers #NewScotlandYard #CriminalBehaviorAnalysts #DoYourDamnJob If you are a victim of sexual assault (in the U.S.) PLEASE call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider in your area.https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotlineYou can also find more resources herehttps://www.wannatalkaboutit.comFollow us and continue the conversationOn Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/realcrimeprofile/?hl=enOn Twitterhttps://twitter.com/realcrimeprofilOn Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/realcrimeprofile/>>>>>>>>> SUPPORT OUR OTHER SHOWS
"Victim/Suspect" follows reporter Rae de Leon as she investigates a pattern of cases where women reported sexual assault only to be accused by police of lying. Filmmaker Nancy Schwartzman explores the underlying biases behind this trend.
We are honored to be joined by Rae de Leon who is the investigative reporter at the heart of the incredible Netflix documentary “Victim/Suspect” which was directed by Nancy Schwartzman who we are also thrilled to be joining us. Rae walks us through her journey digging deeply into this subject of law enforcement turning victims of sexual assault into suspects of “false” reporting. She has some additional shocking details to add about her interview of a certain detective. Nancy talks about the common patterns she has discovered in her many years of chronicling sexual violence — especially the connection between sexual assault, police response and college football culture. #netflix #victimsuspect #sexualassault #believevictims #centerforinvestigativereporting #EmmaMannion #DyanieBermeo #MeganRondini #NikkiYovino #RachelDeLeon #NancySchwartzman #documentary #filmmaker #crime #ExpertAnalysis #FBI #Profilers #NewScotlandYard #CriminalBehaviorAnalysts If you are a victim of sexual assault (in the U.S.) PLEASE call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider in your area.https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotlineYou can also find more resources herehttps://www.wannatalkaboutit.comhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoZaGvTpYTUFollow us and continue the conversationOn Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/realcrimeprofile/?hl=enOn Twitterhttps://twitter.com/realcrimeprofilOn Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/realcrimeprofile/>>>>>>>>> SUPPORT OUR OTHER SHOWS

Do you know what the “Reid” technique is or why it is so controversial? In today's episode Jim explains how this high pressure interrogation protocol can be abused by police officers when they are poorly trained and when they have no experience with traumatized sexual assault victims. But Laura wonders if there isn't something deeper going on when law enforcement tried to turn victims into suspects. She has a theory about something even more insidious at play here. Join us as we continue breaking down the cases in the new Netflix documentary “Victim/Suspect” which follows investigative journalist Rachel de Leon's tireless search for the truth in several “false” allegations of rape and the consequences for the victims of sexual assault who report to police. #TheTruthWillNotRevealItself#netflix #victimsuspect #sexualassault #believevictims #centerforinvestigativereporting #EmmaMannion #DyanieBermeo #MeganRondini #NikkiYovino #RachelDeLeon #NancySchwartzman #documentary #filmmaker #crime #ExpertAnalysis #FBI #Profilers #NewScotlandYard #CriminalBehaviorAnalysts If you are a victim of sexual assault (in the U.S.) PLEASE call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider in your area.https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotlineYou can also find more resources herehttps://www.wannatalkaboutit.comhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoZaGvTpYTUFollow us and continue the conversationOn Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/realcrimeprofile/?hl=enOn Twitterhttps://twitter.com/realcrimeprofilOn Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/realcrimeprofile/>>>>>>>>> SUPPORT OUR OTHER SHOWS

In 2015, Emma Mannion, an 18 year old college student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa was raped in a parking lot outside of a popular bar. What happened next is almost as shocking as the sexual assault. When Emma went to the police to report this crime, not only did they not believe her, but they arrested her for making a false report. According to the new Netflix documentary “Victim/Suspect” Emma's case is not an isolated incident. Investigative journalist Rachel de Leon from the Center for Investigative Reporting takes us on a horrible journey as she uncovers case after case of victims not being believed and then prosecuted. Emma Mannion told police she was raped in a car by a fellow University of Alabama student. When investigators said her story wasn't credible, she reluctantly recanted her claim. That's when cops arrested and prosecuted her for filing a false report.Journalist Rachel De Leon discovered a nationwide pattern of law enforcement using deceptive interview techniques to break the victim's resolve, then turning the tables on them and accusing them of their own crimes. De Leon traveled the country to explore the story of Emma and others like her who were treated less like victims and more like suspects. The Netflix documentary “Victim/Suspect” follows De Leon as she exposes why women who sought justice for their assaults were falsely arrested and imprisoned because police didn't believe them. It also recounts the case of several victims who've lived with the personal and public pain of false recantations. OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "VICTIM/SUSPECT" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 12 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.
In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, we are talking about the Netflix documentary film “Victim/Suspect" out now on Netflix. Host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Nancy Schwartzman and journalist Rachel De Leon. An investigative reporter discovered a nationwide pattern of women who'd come forward to report a sexual assault, only to be arrested for filing a false report. But the victims said they recanted because police said they didn't believe them. Rachel De Leon learned police were employing the same deceptive techniques used in criminal interrogations, even withholding evidence to break a woman's story and turn a true victim into a suspect. “Victim/Suspect” follows De Leon as she probes what happens when assault survivors seeking justice are punished because investigators do not believe them. The film also recounts the case of several victims who've lived with the personal and public pain of false recantations. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched “Victim/Suspect" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.

Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy have nine movies to review on the show and the best one may be the one they told you about in January at Sundance from Nicole Holofcener and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (You Hurt My Feelings). A couple of harrowing documentaries come close involving how police turn the tables on survivors of sexual assault (Victim/Suspect) and a tale of domestic assault, opioids and ultimately justice (The Fire That Took Her). A pair of stand-up comedians have made movies about their dads (About My Father, The Machine) and Gerard Butler is on the run again (Kandahar). The pair could not resist a title that was too intriguing to pass up (Exorcism in Utero) and a new genre of horror continues in more ways than one (Influencer). Finally, Disney has another live-action remake of one of their animated classics. Just how far does The Little Mermaid sink on that list? 0:00 - Intro 1:02 - You Hurt My Feelings 14:24 - Exorcism in Utero 25:07 - Victim/Suspect 37:36 – The Fire That Took Her 50:13 - Influencer 1:00:10 – The Machine 1:10:54 - About My Father 1:28:52 - Kandahar 1:35:29 – The Little Mermaid 1:52:30 - Outro

Nicole Chase was a young mom with a daughter to support when she took a job at a local restaurant in Canton, Connecticut. She liked the work and was good at her job. But the place turned out to be more like a frat house than a quaint roadside sandwich spot. And the crude behavior kept escalating – until one day she says her boss went too far and she turned to the local police for help. What happened next would put a detective on the hot seat and lead to a legal battle that would drag on for years. The United States Supreme Court would even get involved. Reveal reporter Rachel de Leon spent years taking a close look at cases across the country in which people reported sexual assaults to police, only to find themselves investigated. In this hour, we explore one case and hear how police interrogated an alleged perpetrator, an alleged victim and each other. De Leon's investigation is also the subject of a forthcoming documentary, “Victim/Suspect,” which debuts May 23 on Netflix. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy once again experienced this year's Sundance from the comfort of their domiciles, but that in no way affected their viewing numbers. In just a sampling of what they saw, they discuss over 25 films including documentaries about Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields, freediving, our evolvement with the camera and the strange saga of a bootleg video store. They talk about some of their favorite midnight selections along with divisive tales of dating, bodybuilding and workplace relationships all featuring the festival's theme of the year – man babies. Gael Garcia Bernal inspires as a luchador while David Strathairn and Jane Levy put next year's award ballots on notice. Searchlight Pictures has a great new romcom coming to Hulu and bought a hilarious mockumentary from Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman and Ben Platt. All that plus new films from Brandon Cronenberg and Nicole Holofcener are at the center of a pretty solid festival with titles you should take note of now. 0:00 - Intro 5:18 – Kim's Video 14:09 – Fantastic Machine 17:38 – The Deepest Breath 26:15 – Birth/Rebirth 33:41 – Talk To Me 39:50 – Cat Person 45:31 – Fair Play 54:14 – Still: A Michael J.
