This is the concluding episode of Leslie McFadden's appearance on Sexual Assault Survivor Stories. Leslie's experience is a powerful example of the systemic issues that many survivors face. In October 2015, she was drugged and raped in Brooklyn. The last thing she remembers was drinks on Stone Street; she would wake up in a hospital many hours later, not knowing what happened. Slowly, she began to piece together that something terrible had occurred. When Leslie reported her sexual assault to the NYPD's Special Victims Unit, she faced additional trauma. One of the first questions a detective asked her was whether this was truly a case of assault or just regret. The next day, she was asked to make a controlled call to the perpetrator, during which he admitted to the assault. Immediately after, the detective presented her with a form that she was told would put her case on hold pending further evidence. Unbeknownst to her, this was actually a case closure form, which she signed while in distress. The detective never spoke to the assailant and closed the case without further investigation. Leslie's story is not unique. She became one of 19 survivors to urge the federal Department of Justice to open an investigation into how the NYPD handled sexual assault survivors and their cases. In 2022, the DOJ opened an investigation into the NYPD's Special Victims Unit to examine whether the department discriminated against sexual assault survivors when conducting their investigations. This episode is the conclusion of a two-part encounter. Leslie is an articulate, strong, and influential voice for victims and survivors everywhere; her ongoing goal is to make a lasting change in this world, to help overcome rape culture, and encourage law enforcement to become trauma-informed, empathic, and thorough in the investigation of rape and sexual assault. As I mentioned in last week's episode, a former guest of SASS, Rachel Izzo, introduced me to Leslie. If you haven't heard Rachel Izzo's episodes, I encourage you to take the time to listen to those as well. Rachel and Leslie share similar experiences with the New York Police Department's Special Victims Unit, and have both shown immense courage in sharing their stories. Never one to pull any punches, this SASS episode is no exception. This is a full throttle, deep dive, all-in listen. A Gut Punch. In this powerful crossover episode, I had the fantastic fortune to join forces with the hosts of the What They Don't Say: Sexual Assault and Everything in Between podcast for a special pod-share episode. It was an incredible opportunity for all of us to come together and share our unique perspectives on the journey of healing and justice after sexual assault. I've been following Shannon and Lauren's work for a while, and it was great to finally connect and collaborate. Their podcast offers such an unfiltered, raw approach to discussing trauma and healing, and this episode felt like the perfect chance to amplify that conversation. Shannon and Lauren dive deep into the realities that survivors face, from the emotional weight of trauma to the exhausting process of navigating the court system. They tackle what it really feels like to live with the aftermath of these experiences every day, and they aren't afraid to pull back the curtain on the messy, unglamorous parts of healing. Their no-holds-barred approach makes it clear that this isn't about sugarcoating anything—it's about talking honestly, without filters, and giving people the space to relate to the tough moments. In this episode, we come together for a candid conversation about the challenges we've faced and how important it is to keep sharing these stories, even when it's uncomfortable. We touch on the toll trauma can take on our lives and relationships, how the legal system can sometimes fail to offer the justice that survivors deserve, and the importance of community as a part of the healing process. It was truly an honor to share this unique episode with Shannon and Lauren, and I think you'll find it's a conversation that's real, heartfelt, and incredibly important. Whether you're a survivor, a supporter, or someone seeking to understand more about the realities of sexual assault and healing, this episode offers valuable insights and a reminder that you're not alone. As a podcast host, it's not uncommon to receive a steady stream of inquiries from publicists and agents eager to get their clients featured on as many platforms as possible. While some pitches align beautifully with the heart and purpose of the show, others—though well-intentioned—may not be the right fit. That's why it's so important to dig deeper, to go beyond the initial pitch and truly understand who the potential guest is, what they represent, and how their story intersects with the mission of the podcast. In the case of this week's guests, that extra effort paid off in a profound way. Learning more about Karla Hernandez and her husband, Gerald Erickson, revealed a story not only deeply compelling, but also tragically resonant with the themes of trauma, justice, and survivor advocacy that this podcast seeks to elevate. Karla's story is devastating. In December 2020 she was brutally raped by a stranger on a beach while her husband surfed just out of sight. The trauma she endured didn't end with the assault—it was compounded by the indifferent, dismissive, and at times retraumatizing response she received from local police and the prosecutor's office. Karla courageously sought justice but instead was met with a system that failed to take meaningful action. That harrowing experience became the catalyst for something powerful. In 2023, Karla and Gerald co-founded Vivo Alliance, a survivor-led organization dedicated to confronting the very injustices that thwarted her own pursuit of accountability. Vivo Alliance exists to challenge the systemic failures embedded in Puerto Rico's response to sexual violence. The organization is committed to amplifying survivor voices, advocating for legal reform, increasing public awareness, and empowering those impacted by sexual violence to reclaim their power with a drive to get Puerto Rico law makers to enact a victims rights statute. Karla's story is not only one of survival—but of transformation. She turned her personal pain into collective purpose, and her appearance on the show offers listeners an honest, urgent, and deeply moving look into the realities of sexual assault, the failures of the justice system, and the fierce resolve of a woman who refused to be silenced. I want to remind you—we all have a role to play in this fight. The first step? Start by Believing. When a survivor reaches out to tell their story, we need to listen without judgment, without skepticism. We need to believe them…because we all know someone whose life has been touched by sexual assault—whether it's a friend, a family member, or even ourselves. The more we normalize these conversations, the stronger we become in pushing back against rape culture and the systems that perpetuate it. Second step…go to the Vivo Alliance website, read all about the alliance and its goals, and sign the petition. And encourage everyone you know to do the same! Spread the word! We need as many signatures on this petition as possible! An important side note: if you're finding value in these episodes, please take a moment to leave a 5-star rating on your podcast platform. Today's episode was truly an enjoyable show to record: my guest is Matt Stegner, a former police officer having served with both the Atlanta (GA) Police Department and the New York State Police. We currently share the same profession…Matt is a trainer/consultant in specializing in trauma-informed investigations of sexual assault and rape cases. I had the pleasure of meeting him at an End Violence Against Women-International (EVAWI) conference after an amazing presentation he did. It's truly and honor and privilege to know Matt and call him a friend. Here's a little bit about Matt from his website: “His extensive experience as a Senior Investigator with the New York State Police (Ret.), especially in handling complex criminal investigations, speaks volumes about his expertise and dedication to the field. His specialization in areas like sexual assault, child exploitation, internet crimes against children, and interpersonal violence investigations showcases a commitment to addressing some of the most sensitive and crucial aspects of law enforcement.” (Cite: ) I encourage you to check out Matt's website and learn more about him and his amazing work!
Before anything else, I'm going to encourage anyone who is reading these episode notes to go back to these SASS episodes and listen to the venerable Arci Grey: When I first started this podcast, I started searching all of the common social media sites, looking for anyone with the words “survivor” attached to their name, to see if they were past victims of rape or sexual assault so that I could potentially interview them for this show. I can't recall now which site I found Arci on, but there was a link to a calendar that visitors to the site could sign up on to schedule an initial consult with her, which I did. A few days later, on the date I signed up for, Arci gave me a call. After brief introductions, I told Arci the reason I had reached out to her was to see if she was able to recount for me her rape experience. Arci was strong and resolute when she told me about the horrific experience of kidnapping, rape, sexual assault, and attempted murder that she had endured at the hands of a former boyfriend. He had tricked her into thinking that they could be business partners again with his father and lured her to his apartment under the guise of having a phone conversation with his father. What ensued was a multi-day experience of physical and emotional torture culminating with an attack on her life. Arci barely survived. Arci's healing journey is nothing short of miraculous. And from that journey sprang a series of occurrences and events that led to her completely changing her career path and becoming a force-extraordinaire for others to participate in her programs and coaching in order to transform their history of suffering and pain into a healing journey unlike most other conventional paths. All of Arci's episodes reflect her powerful and amazing programs and trauma healing insights. Having Arci as a guest on my show is always an honor, a privilege, and an adventure! I am anxious for you to hear this episode. Please share this story…and don't forget, also, to rate and subscribe to this podcast: Sexual Assault Survivor Stories… And I have another important request: go to the sexualassaultsurvivorstories Instagram page and find and click the “Follow” button! Last Wednesday I was just sitting at my desk working on this podcast, and out of the blue I got a text from my good friend and former SASS Podcast guest, and Trauma-informed Peak Performance Specialist, Arci Grey! Arci wanted to schedule a phone conversation with me…which I did. We scheduled the call for Thursday…and it wasn't just a friendly, catch-up call, she was excited to tell me about a FREE trauma-informed, healing workshop series that she is putting on, and wanted to see if I would help her get the word out…HECK, YEAH!!—of course I want to help! Breaking the Invisible Barriers of Trauma is a three-part workshop that she is streaming live, and recording so that if you sign up, you're eligible to watch it anytime that is convenient for you, and you can watch it over and over! Here's the deal…once we started the conversation, and she told me why she was calling, I asked her if I could record our conversation, and asked her to make the announcement so that I could post our call and let her share her excitement about the upcoming workshop series. The conversation turned into quite the discussion, and I decided to make it a full Bonus Episode! My recommendation is: take a listen! You'll be glad you did! Arci's workshop series is going to be awesome! Here's where you go to sign up!!.... —OR— go to her website (which you should do anyway, cuz it's awesome, and you'll learn tons, and there's a blog you need to check out): Sign up for the workshop series! Like I said, it's free! And it's going to be amazing! Thank you, Arci!!! Episode 17 – Part 2 of Interview of Arci Grey Shocking her perpetrator into a different mindset…compelling him to call 911…wasn't the end of the trauma that Arci Grey experienced. There was the shock of what was happening to her in the hospital, the response of close friends, the realization of what it means to change a career and a lifestyle, including the loss of key clients in her business. Then there was the surprisingly, shocking realization that a new career would fulfil her new desire to make something positive come out of all the negative that she had experienced, starting with reaching out to others by sharing her traumatic, near-death experience. This episode is another power-packed discussion that you will be glad you listened to…in keeping with the goal of helping to bring survivor stories that continue to bring justice to victims and survivors of rape and sexual assault. As usual, I encourage my listeners to leave a comment that expresses your thoughts and impressions of how Arci's story has impacted your perspective and life. And please share this episode, and the SASS podcast, with everyone you know…it helps the podcast grow and opens further opportunities for how the podcast grows. I don't take your loyalty to this show lightly…thank you for listening. Finally, I want to extend my heart-felt gratitude to Arci Grey for giving of her valuable time to be on my show, and especially for her courage, openness, and sincerity in not only sharing her story, but also in her goal of bringing justice to victims and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Please always remember to Start By Believing, because we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault.
Episode 16 – Part 1: Interview of Arci Grey Listener discretion advised. When Arci went to the home of her ex-boyfriend late one night, she thought it was to re-new a business relationship with his father, a real estate investor from another country. But it didn't take long to realize that the phone call that was supposed to happen with the investor, wasn't really going to happen. And that her ex-boyfriend had lured her to his apartment for no other reason than to torment and torture her…literally. He wouldn't let her leave. And it got worse from there. Much worse. This is the true story of Arci Grey's kidnap, torture, rape, and near-murder. The fact that Arci survived is almost beyond belief. But survive she did. And she has become the epitome of survival…she has become a Survivor Success Coach, and she is helping other survivors realize their growing, never-stagnant, potential. You will be inspired by Arci's story of tragedy to triumph. But this is only the beginning. Next week is Part 2 of this powerful, awesome story. Be sure to listen in. And, plans are being made to have Arci come back so that she and I can delve into the neuroscience of trauma, so keep an eye out for more to come. Please share this story…and don't forget, also, to rate and subscribe to this podcast: Sexual Assault Survivor Stories, the SASS podcast. Equally important: do your part to help bring justice to victims and survivors of rape and sexual assault; and, to Start by Believing; because, we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault.
This is a busy time of the year, and I know many people are pre-occupied with celebrating, enjoying family and friends, and getting ready to ring-in the New Year. So maybe podcast listening isn't a top priority on your to-do list. Yet, I didn't want to close out the last week of the first year of my podcast with a repeat episode, or no episode at all; so, I went out on a limb and made a quick phone call to ask Arci Grey, a fellow-podcaster and soon-to-be guest on my show, if she would be willing to spend just a few minutes with me today to so that I could introduce you to her, and to talk about what's coming in her full, soon-to-be-posted episode...she didn't hesitate in agreeing to talking with me! I don't want to be a spoiler here in these notes, so I'll let you just get right to the listening of this short interview with Arci. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Seasons Greetings to all of you. Thank you so very much for listening to the launch-year of Sexual Assault Survivor Stories – SASS – I hope we can continue to engage, support, teach, and celebrate survivorship with each other for many years to come! Remember to Start By Believing, and to do your part to help bring justice to victims and survivors of sexual violence…because we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault.

I was pleased to have Bill Johnson on the Acquisition Talk podcast to talk about how he helped bring commercial technology, open architecture, and continuous delivery to the sonar community in the 1990s with the Acoustic Rapid COTS Insertion (ARCI) program. Bill was the deputy program manger and pioneered many of the techniques DoD is still trying to go after today, and the results speak for themselves. ARCI achieved a 60-fold decrease in real processing cost, a seven-fold increase in sensor performance, and reduced false alarms by 40 percent. Bill explained that after the Cold War, the RDT&E budget fell by 70 percent for undersea sonar systems. Around the same time, John Walker sold information to the Russians about how the United States detected and classified enemy submarines. Suddenly, their submarines became very quite. Acoustic superiority became a national security imperative. The typical reaction for the defense acquisition system is to demand more money to solve the problem. The general manager of the prime contractor at the time IBM, which later merged into Lockheed Martin, told Bill that they've “got deep pockets.” The contractor could keep R&D going while the program office searched for more money. “Hey, we're part of this problem,” Bill recalled thinking. “We had to leverage the commercial side.” I'd like to thank Bill Johnson for joining me on the Acquisition Talk podcast. There's a ton more information on ARCI and the case study details of what made it an acquisition success. Important papers and other resources are at the acquisition talk website.
