Plus plenty of film and TV reviews, from brilliant new AppleTV comedy The Studio to Emilia Clarke's disturbing fertility sci-fi The Pod Generation, now on Netflix. Finally, we dig into why so many men seem to be fainting at a depiction of abortion in the West End, and the efficacy of trigger warnings. Takeaways The film 'The Pod Generation' explores the concept of growing and developing an embryo outside the natural biological womb in an artificial environment. Research on artificial wombs and womb-on-chip technology is still in the theoretical stage, but there are promising developments in sustaining preterm fetuses and modeling the maternal-fetal interface. The film raises important ethical considerations, such as parental bonding, the risk of designer babies, and the integration of AI in reproductive technology. This week we're excited to present a conversation with The Animal Kingdom director Thomas Cailley and The Pod Generation director Sophie Barthes as they discuss their playful, up-to-the-minute experiments with genre and the use of speculative fiction to examine political realities and probe timeless emotional truths. This conversation was moderated by FLC Assistant Programmer Madeline Whittle with interpretation by Nicholas Elliott. Thomas Cailley, whose 2014 breakout feature Love at First Fight charmed audiences with its invigorating fusion of the rom-com and coming-of-age genres, returned to Rendez-Vous with French Cinema with this year's Opening Night selection, The Animal Kingdom, in which a darkly imaginative sci-fi premise gives way to a thoughtful study of fatherhood. When mankind is plagued with a mysterious infection that selectively mutates the bodies of ordinary people into animal hybrids, a widower and his teenage son must fight to survive in Cailley's darkly imaginative exploration of a human ecosystem undergoing inexplicable—but potentially liberating—transformation. The Animal Kingdsom is in select theaters now, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures.

Europe is currently experiencing falling birthrates, which makes him question whether the world is experiencing overpopulation. While looking at data, people who control the narrative make it seem like there's too many people and babies and the same narrative hasn't changed since the 70's, making him believe that this concept has turned into an ideology.Lies Being Told to WomenFor the longest time, women have been told that their career should be the most important thing in their life and that choosing to be a mother, or a stay-at-home mother, is something to be ashamed of our counter to the progress that's being going on for women. However, women's fertility has a deadline and the risk of having children increases as they get older.
From "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke as a mum-to-be of a baby grown in an artificial womb in "The Pod Generation", to compassionate refugee drama "The Old Oak" from veteran socialist filmmaker Ken Loach, film critic Lisa Nesselson talks to Eve Jackson about the week's film news.
“I think I could turn into you if I really tried.”Talking About Persona with our guest, writer/director Sophie BarthesOn this episode of Movies We Like, we speak with writer/director Sophie Barthes about one of her favorite films, Ingmar Bergman's 1966 psychological drama Persona. We also discussed Barthes' own directing career and thoughts on filmmaking. We have an in-depth discussion about Bergman's avant-garde masterpiece Persona, analyzing its dreamlike atmosphere, innovative editing and cinematography, complex characters and themes of identity and psychology. We talk about how the film's shocking opening montage and sparse narrative puts the viewer in an unsettled state of mind. Overall, we find Persona to be an endlessly discussable classic that still feels fresh and boundary-pushing today. We also speak with Barthes about her three feature films - Cold Souls, Madame Bovary, and The Pod Generation. Barthes explains how she often explores themes of consumerism, psychology and identity through different genres and time periods. She shared insights into her creative process, from conceptualizing stories based on her dreams to her highly-stylized production design. Barthes also discussed the challenges of portraying human truths and darkness as a director today versus Bergman's time.Barthes gives thoughtful perspective as both a director and film lover. Her pick certainly leads to a rich discussion about cinematic art today as Persona proves to be a multilayered classic ripe for analysis.Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel!Film SundriesLearn more about supporting The Next Reel's Movies We Like through your own membership with The Next Reel. In the movie's near future, you don't have to have a baby by getting pregnant, or using IVF, or going through a surrogate. If you're lucky, you can get a reservation at The Womb Center, where you can grow your baby inside a convenient, high-tech, egg-shaped pod. Pressured by her friends and her work's HR department, Rachel decides to give The Womb Center a shot. But Alvy, a professor of botany and lover of the natural world, is not thrilled to find out Rachel wants a pod baby. Despite this, they forge ahead and learn how this new technology will not only change society, but their relationship. Universe of Art host D. Peterschmidt sat down with the film's writer and director, Sophie Barthes, to talk about what inspired her to make the movie, and what may be lost in the thoughtless pursuit of technology.Universe of Art is hosted and produced by D. Independent filmmaker Sophie Barthes joins us to discuss her breakout Sundance hit — and winner of this year's Dolby Institute Fellowship Award — The Pod Generation. The film is a hilariously biting near-future sci-fi satire, starring Emilia Clark and Chiwetel Ejiofor as a young couple who turn to a corporate tech giant to help them carry their new baby — literally — to term.“Living in America has triggered this passion for exploring the commodification of everything… The fact that we don't see human beings as an ‘end' by themself, but as a ‘means.' A means of consumption. A means of generating more money. I don't know why, but it really interests me. Like how capitalism has reduced human beings to just ‘function,' instead of ‘being.'”—Sophie Barthes, Writer and Director, “The Pod Generation”The Pod Generation is currently in theaters, in Dolby Vison® and Dolby Atmos®, where available. Please subscribe to The Dolby Institute Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 11, 2023. Vampire movie fans and horror movie fans should be pleased with “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's “Dracula;” It's Dracula...on a boat! Gal Gadot is back in another action movie with a cool spy premise, “Heart of Stone” is now on Netflix. Season three of “Only Murders in the Building” makes its premiere on Hulu with guest stars Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep joining our main characters Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and Steve Martin. Some smaller Sundance movies hit wider release with the humorous sci-fi exploration of future childbirth in “The Pod Generation” and “Jules,” featuring Ben Kingsley as an elderly fellow who sees a flying saucer crash in his backyard to very dry humorous results. Also out this week is “Love in Taipei” on ParamountPlus and Andy's guilty pleasure, “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” on HBO. Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming, and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Brilliant opinions and commentary on all things geek, but surprising knowledge and witty arguments over pop culture, Star Trek, MARVEL vs. DC, and a wide range of movies, TV shows, and more. Formerly known as SLC Fanboys, the show is hosted by Andy Farnsworth and KellieAnn Halvorsen, who are joined by guest experts. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME. We have a new podcast! It's called Universe Of Art, and it's all about artists who use science to bring their creations to the next level. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. In ‘The Pod Generation,' Pregnancy Goes High-Tech In the new movie The Pod Generation, a wife named Rachel, played by Emilia Clarke, and her husband Alvy, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, want to start a family. Science Friday producer and Universe of Art host D. Peterschmidt sat down with the film's writer and director, Sophie Barthes, to talk about what inspired her to make the movie, and what may be lost in the thoughtless pursuit of technology. The Rising Tide Against Deep Sea Mining The ocean's seabed is filled with minerals like copper, nickel, and cobalt—the very raw materials that tech companies use to make electronics and batteries. Some view it as fertile ground to mine and exploit, launching an underwater mining rush. Last month, world leaders gathered in Kingston, Jamaica to hash out the future of deep sea mining. For years, the International Seabed Authority—the organization in charge of authorizing and controlling mineral operations on the seafloor—has been trying and failing to put together a set of guidelines for deep sea mining. Ira talks with Dr. Diva Amon, marine biologist at the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory at the University of California Santa Barbara and director of the non-profit SpeSeas, based in Trinidad and Tobago. They talk through the science of deep sea mining, the policies being debated, and what the world risks losing. Then, Ira talks with Solomon Pili Kahoʻohalahala, Chairperson of the non-profit Maui Nui Makai Network and Native Hawaiian Elder of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument Advisory Council. August Skies Set To Dazzle August is shaping up to be a great month for stargazing, with or without a telescope. Celestial wonders such as a Perseid meteor shower and a Super Blue Moon will take place soon. Saturn will also be lit up for the remainder of August, and should be visible to the naked eye on a clear night. Joining Ira to talk about what we can see this month in the night sky is astronomer, author, and podcaster Dean Regas. Regas also talks about recently leaving his long tenure at the Cincinnati Observatory, and what's next for his love for astronomy. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy once again experienced this year's Sundance from the comfort of their domiciles, but that in no way affected their viewing numbers. In just a sampling of what they saw, they discuss over 25 films including documentaries about Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields, freediving, our evolvement with the camera and the strange saga of a bootleg video store. They talk about some of their favorite midnight selections along with divisive tales of dating, bodybuilding and workplace relationships all featuring the festival's theme of the year – man babies. Gael Garcia Bernal inspires as a luchador while David Strathairn and Jane Levy put next year's award ballots on notice. Searchlight Pictures has a great new romcom coming to Hulu and bought a hilarious mockumentary from Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman and Ben Platt. All that plus new films from Brandon Cronenberg and Nicole Holofcener are at the center of a pretty solid festival with titles you should take note of now. 0:00 - Intro 5:18 – Kim's Video 14:09 – Fantastic Machine 17:38 – The Deepest Breath 26:15 – Birth/Rebirth 33:41 – Talk To Me 39:50 – Cat Person 45:31 – Fair Play 54:14 – Still: A Michael J.
