Through The Church Digital Podcast's Season 4: Jesus, Gamers & Church, we have been exploring how engaging in gaming and nerd culture digitally allows us a huge missional reach. We've talked mostly about Twitch being the avenue that we engage in, which is cool. But, to effectively reach gamers, what if we actually did “church” in video games. Novel concept, but that's exactly what DJ Soto and VR MMO Church are doing. As lead pastor of VR Church, DJ saw a huge opportunity to reach people via virtual reality back in 2016. DJ and VR Church is taking that same pioneering, innovative spirit by planting churches inside video games like “Rust” or “Final Fantasy”! What does church look like inside a video game? Let's talk with DJ, as well as Pastor Koko (who pastors the Final Fantasy campus) and discover what church, and discipleship, look like inside video games! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thechurchdigital/message
Welcome to the podcast. So, today, we're diving deep into the world of Virtual Reality. We've done a couple of episodes on VR over the last year. One with two pastors, Jason Poling and Gerald Faulkner and their experience learning and preaching in VR. Another with DJ Soto who is the pastor of arguably the largest and most influential church in the Virtual space - VR Church. We got some good feedback on our episode with DJ. So today, we are talking with our friend Jeff Reed. He has written a new book called VR and the MetaVerse Church. We're going to define a lot of terms for you so if you're a beginner still learning about church in the MetaVerse, we are going to try really hard not to lose you or go over your head, we're going to keep things real simple so that you can learn about this world and also consider if its something for your church to consider. Since interviewing Jeff, one of the major communities that we discussed that a lot of VR Churches meet within - AltSpace VR is completely shutting down. So you'll hear us talking about AltSpace - they will be no more. Which means the other communities or worlds is where churches will move to. - You'll hear us talk about VR Chat - that is where the mission field is. Then there are other words like RecRoom, Meta Horizons and BigScreen where churches will have to move to. We are going to dive into a lot today with Jeff so hang in there. This might be an education for you learning about VR or you might be a veteran. Hopefully either way, you'll learn a lot today and we'll give you some things for your church to consider. This week is going to look a little different. We want to give you a big introduction into the MetaVerse and our thoughts on where this is going for the church. For this episode, we interviewed DJ Soto who is the pastor of VR Church - a 100% Virtual Church experience in the MetaVerse. We have attended VR Church with DJ and what we found, which we talk to DJ about is it is not just your avatar watching a screen within the environment, but the Metaverse is its own environment. At DJ's church, they are creating worlds that you walk around in and the see the Bible come to life. The graphics are a little video gamish, but the concept is getting there quickly. Ministry is taking place. This is not something to write off as silly or too out there. This is really happening. Church in Virtual Reality. You're going to learn a whole lot more from our conversation with DJ. SHOW NOTES --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/makingsundayhappen/support
Can you strap on VR goggles and go to church in the metaverse? We asked the author Jay Kim of Analog Church and the pastor DJ Soto of Virtual Reality Church to argue all the wrongs and rights. Finally, an episode where Adam & Chris aren't the ones doing all the fighting! To be fair both these guys are pastors so the debate is probably more of mild-mannered discussion, but it covers some important ground about what it means to be the church, and what the future of the church might look like. VR CHURCH—PASTOR DJ SOTO DJ Soto, Bishop & Pastor or VR Church D.J. Soto began preaching in the metaverse in 2016. Originally thinking he would plant physical churches, he soon realized a new vision to plant churches in the metaverse. He is now the Bishop of Virtual Reality Church and MMO Church, which are futuristic church expressions that is intended to be radically inclusive and consistent with Christianity's long history of adapting to new forms of media. Vox's Sigal Samuel talks with scholars and authors Wesley Wildman and Kate Stockly about their book, Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Enlightenment Engineering. They discuss high-tech tools like brain stimulation and neurofeedback-guided meditation that purport to enrich our spiritual lives, what possible risks they may pose to our psyches, and the ethical implications of technology-induced shortcuts to transformative meditative states. Tomorrow (3/14) is Pi day! Yes, guilty as charged. I’m a recovering math and science nerd. Pi day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant “pi” which relates to the circumference of a circle. It’s also a great excuse to eat lots of pie. In honor of Pi day, I wanted to take a walk around the world and touch on a couple crypto relevant stories Ukraine vs Russia: Crypto in war? EU may ban proof of work - misguided? Jambo: Can Play to earn take off in Africa?Holy metaverse?1. Ukraine 🇺🇦 vs Russia 🇷🇺: Crypto in war? The good: War is an ugly business. It brings out the worst of humanity. Yet even in those dark days, heroes emerge and necessity gives birth to innovation. Over $100M of crypto has been donated to Ukraine from around the world. Without crypto, many of these donations would have taken 2+ business days to be processed and charged up to 6% fees. But with crypto, we have solutions that provide instant, free-to-near-free international payments. Speed can be the difference between life and death. Imagine you lived in the US but your loved ones were under siege in Ukraine. They urgently requested money to flee. It could be heart wrenching having to wait 2+ business days. Mind you, if the request came on Friday, funds might not arrive till Tuesday. This could be unnecessary exposure. The ban:Many Western governments and companies have put in place sanctions against Russians. This culminated in 7 leading Russian banks being cut-off from the SWIFT global payment network. SWIFT is a global payment messaging system. It links over 11,000 banks across 200+ countries. The system does not transfer money rather its like an email system for banks. It conducts about 42 million messages every day. The ban on 7 Russian banks would cause inconvenience but I expect they might eventually develop workarounds over time. It remains to be seen how effective the sanctions are. Could crypto provide a workaround? The other sideIn Nigeria, we say, when two elephants fight, the grass suffers. Deep wounds are being gored on both sides. Much of the US news coverage is focused on Ukrainian courage amidst Putin’s over-reach. I have also been thinking about regular Russian citizens - they did not choose this war.The sanctions and exits of Western companies are dealing a heavy blow to the their economy. Global companies like McKinsey & Company, Visa, PWC, McDonald’s are among the dozens which have ceased operations in the country. Many Russians now find themselves without a job at the exact moment their local currency (the ruble) has lost 40% of value against the US dollar and inflation rising. Crypto could offer some solutions for them too. Russians could convert their life savings from rubles to US-dollar backed stablecoins or Bitcoin. Out-of-work Russians could consider Play-to-Earn games. Crypto payments could provide optionality in the event that sanctions. My heart goes out to Ukraine 🇺🇦 and all who have had their lives disrupted by the invasion.2. EU 🇪🇺may ban proof-of-workThe European Union (EU) has a legislative framework for governing digital currencies, it’s called Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA). It contains a provision that could limit the use of proof-of-work cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum Proof-of-work has been a lightning rod as it is an energy-intensive mechanism. Some environmentalists have decried coal-powered bitcoin mining in China as detrimental to the fight against climate change. It is in the in this vein that proof-of-work came under heavy scrutiny. However, I don’t think this premise is based on full understanding of the current state. Bitcoin miners are highly mobile and incentivized to pursue the lowest energy source. Today, 39% of bitcoin mining is powered by renewable energy while only 13% of US power generation is renewable (EIA). Bitcoin mining can subsidize capital investments to build more renewable energy facilities. The EU is right to consider opportunities to reduce carbon footprint. But it is odd to start with Bitcoin mining given its miniscule carbon footprint compared to other related activities like the traditional banking system (650x), gold mining (90x), and paper currency printing (11x). Furthermore, a 1% reduction in carbon emissions from global aviation sector would be 5x larger than total carbon emissions associated with Bitcoin mining. Shouldn’t we focus on that?3. Jambo: Play to earn in Africa💰Last year, I shared the story of how Play-to-earn NFT games were providing thousands of Filipinos a means of livelihood. Africa has many of the same strong fundamentals: 60% of the population is below 24 years old and almost 50% of university graduates in Africa are unemployed. James Zhang, a 3rd-generation Chinese-Congolese, founded Jambo in Kinshasa to capitalize on the same trends in Africa. Jambo’s goal is to become the Web 3.0 super app for Africa. They have already reached 12,000 students across 14 countries (Morocco, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar and South Africa). The students go through a 10-weeek program to explore opportunities in play-to-earn gaming and decentralized finance (DeFi). Jambo also takes on some of the students to become local ambassadors. Jambo provides scholarships which enables students to earn money. In some cases, students are making 2x what their salary might be. Jambo recently raised $7.5M from a group of investors including Coinbase Ventures, Alameda Research and other notable crypto investors. The goal is to achieve 1M downloads by the end of year.Too often, US VCs looking to invest in Africa focus in on Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya. It makes sense these are some of the most mature and dynamic hubs on the continent. However, it belies the difference and opportunities in the other 51 countries in Africa. I’ve been impressed by Jambo’s strategy of quickly getting boots on the ground in a a variety of countries. 4. Holy Metaverse ⛪️✝️This week, I learned that there is a VR Church in the metaverse! They host Sunday services, weekly groups, and offer volunteer opportunities…100% in the metaverse. The clincher is that it was established in 2017! One of the great hopes of the metaverse is to improve access. This has proved true in the VR Church. One of the leaders shared how she had been diagnosed with a neuro-muscular condition which effectively left her homebound since 2010. VR Church has given her an avenue to be actively engaged in a community. Just when I was thinking this was pretty fringe stuff, today my sister and brother-in-law shared that their church was planning to run part of their youth summer program in the metaverse. Church attendance in the US has declined in recent decades. It makes sense to leverage technology to reach the next generation. However, VR Church proves that there is staying power. It delivers on creating a more accessible and global experience. What a great time to be alive. I hope you have a wonderful Pi Day and week ahead. O daboAfo This is a public episode. In today's segment, we discuss the accelerating movement toward VR Church and how the Metaverse is paving the way for what could be a new era for the Body of Christ, and the question is, who will embrace it and who will reject it?
Why do I church buildings look like they do? Are church buildings really even important? Can I just "be the church" all by myself? What about VR churches? Jason Poling is creating the first hybrid Virtual Reality and In-Real-Life church. As he is learning how to do hybrid discipleship, he is paving a pathway for both digital and in-real-life disciples being together in the same trainings and experiences via Discord and Zoom. In the past year, God has enabled Jason and his team to plant 4 churches in 4 distinct Metaverse continents: AltspaceVR, VRChat, Discord, and Twitch. Listen to Episode 9 of the podcast and access the show notes below. Future Church Insights: 1. Jason explains what a VR Church is. He explains that the “Metaverse” is a new world with continents and different platforms. Sometimes it's an on-line game, sometimes it's a chat feature or streaming platform. He notes that there are a lot of unreached people and continents within the Metaverse that a VR Church is able to reach 2. Jason notes that people show up to VR Church because they want to connect, not to stay anonymous. He says that most people assume that the Metaverse is populated by people who don't want real relationships or don't want to connect. But, they have found the opposite to be true – people often attend the VR Church in more authentic ways than a traditional brick and mortar church. 3. The VR Church is able to reach unreached people. Jason points out that many who show up to the VR Church would never set foot in a traditional church. But, the VR Ch Goals and Desired Outcomes of Hybrid VR/In Real Life Church Reach more of the lost, Nones, Zer, Millennial yet-to-believers often found in abundance in the Metaverse by planting church communities on all “continents”. Develop creative and relevant, yet biblical and historical, methods for discipling and deploying new believers from the Metaverse. Connect Metaverse and IRL believers in a genuine “hybrid” community of Christians for mutual encouragement and missional efforts. Links: cornerstoneyc.com More of a reader? Download the transcription here. Key Quotes from the episode from Jason Poling: “I have shared the gospel over my time as a minister and I love sharing, but I have shared the gospel more in this last year and a half in the Metaverse than maybe I have in my ministry.” (16:31) “I mean, and the thing is because this is anonymous, a lot of people… And “”it's low threat. So when you come to a brick and mortar church, if you're not a believer, it's threatening, it's nerve wracking. They're not stuck in a building. And so I think that allows a lot of people to come. So we've had satanists, we've had new age people with Wickens, we've had a Muslims, we've had the gamut.” (17:33) “And we're on this together, reaching all worlds for Jesus…And what's also too is, we do want to see people get involved in IRL ministry too so a number of them, they came to the VR church and because it was safer, they didn't understand, they were nervous to go, but anyway, through this, they've got an exposure church saying, wow, church is beautiful. I love this.” (31:26)

Before COVID-19 made virtual church a common thing, VR Church was already going strong! But is VR an okay substitute for in-person church? Radio Matt & guest host Hillary discuss it in this classic.
What I love about social media is that every year I discover new people that I learn from and follow. Then, what I like to do is to share them with you all. In fact, I take 6 people or groups and highlight them once a year, usually at the end of December or early January. To find out my lists from previous years you can just like the year (2016, 2017 2018, 2019 and 2020). While 2020 was challenging, the reality is, if you were following any of the digital ministers I have shared about in the past, like Ben Stapley, Dave Adamson, Jeff Reed, Katie Allred, Jeanette Yates, Seth Muse, just to name a few, you would have gotten a lot of great encouragement and help in 2020, especially with the onslaught of COVID. The criteria that I have is that they are involved in Church Communications, Social Media, Student or Family Ministry or Online Ministry. They also need to be producing great blogs, vlogs or podcasts on a consistent basis. If they do not post regularly, they aren't one the list. I am not going recommend you follow someone if they aren't being consistent in their postings, no matter how great their content is. And that's it. Here are the top 6 to seek out in 2021: Rey De Armas. I met Rey a few years ago from a mutual friend, Jeff Reed. Rey is the Online Pastor at Christ Fellowship in Miami, Florida. He is passionate about people coming to know Jesus and mobilizing others to minister to their friends and family (I have had him on the podcast before talking about this). Tyler Samson. Tyler is the Lead Pastor at Church Anywhere. He is also an Admin for the Online + Digital Church Leaders Facebook Group. The group is designed for Online and Digital Minsters looking to learn from each other. It's a great group with tons of help. Digivangelism. I first discovered Digivangelism on TikTok in 2020. Their goal is to help “church leaders reach people with the love of Jesus ONLINE”. And, they do just that. What I really appreciate about what they do is that they are very active on TikTok which not a ton of minsters are at the moment. Brianne Fleming. She may not be a minister but she is someone who has so much great content about brands and marketing. She hosts a very popular #PopChat on Twitter every Friday and Making the Brand podcast. Jate Earhart. Jate is extremely gifted in digital media and motion graphics. He uses Twitch to stream and chat with people while he plays. D.J. Soto. D.J. is the first person people go to for VR Church questions and thoughts. He is the Bishop of Virtual Reality Church.
I love conversations with DJ Soto. DJ challenges me, regularly, and this conversation once again pushes the limits. As Lead Pastor of VR Church, DJ is stretching the boundaries of Avatar Church. Yes, Avatar Church. Here at The Church Digital Podcast, we talk Physical/Phygital church all the time. We talk Digital-Only Churches like Jate Earhart's Love Clan... now we really do a deep dive here talking about putting a church in the Virtual Reality world. Actually, VR Church is different than Digital-Only Churches as it deserves the separate category of Avatar Churches. Here on the Podcast with DJ, we're talking Avatar Church, VR Church's Christmas Services, and a bleeding edge church concept involving MMO video games like “Final Fantasy XIV”. Crazy, radical stuff. And. It. Just. Might. Work. Jump on the podcast here and be challenged in your concept of what church is, and how we can be the church digitally. It's not time to recreate the church. It's time to reimagine the church. By the way, Stadia Church Planting is looking for Church Planters who are interested in planting digital only churches and avatar churches. Is this you? Worshippers are gathering for a church service led by Pastor D.J Soto in Virginia in the USA. Many of them are at home or even in other countries. For DJ, this church is important for worshippers unable to attend a physical church, such as the disabled, the ostracised and the persecuted. VR technology is also teaching future generations about religious tolerance. Every year Jews and Holocaust survivors from across the world make a pilgrimage to Auschwitz in Poland. Alongside them is Karen Jungblut, director of research and documentation, from the Shoah Foundation, based at the University of Southern California, its mission to preserve the first-person accounts of 50,000 Holocaust survivors and other witnesses began with videotape. Now it's using 360 filming to capture the testimony of survivors in the landscape where it happened. Worship is often about the icons of your faith – and in Leicester in the UK we meet Sikh students as they encounter some of their religion’s most important artefacts for the first time – thanks to a VR headset, as a way of engaging young Sikhs and teaching non-Sikhs about the religion. But can immersing yourself get too, well, real? Hussein Kesvani, a Shi’a Muslim journalist who writes about the online experience of British Muslims, joins us to experience a virtual reality app that allows the user to relive the battle of Karbala, an instrumental moment in the Muslim faith. Is this visualisation a step too far? Presented by Sophia Smith-Galer Produced by Julia Paul

There is church in the wild and it's shown in the book of Acts. Pastor Rory Eldridge shows us what a church in the wild looks like. He also gives us some examples of people who are living out what it is to be a church in the wild. For example, DJ Soto who started VR Church and is baptizing VR avatars. Rory reminds us that history makers are rule breakers and that was modeled by Jesus.

The boys of Nobody Special in no way advocate punching people, even if they are heretics. With that said, the historical Saint Nicholas did punch a heretic in the face for saying that Jesus was less than divine. We talk about the historical character that lead to the weird convoluted story we have today. But not before we talk about VR Church. Props first of all to John Crist in being one of the greatest influences of Christian Culture by criticizing what needs to be criticized. His recent videomade fantastic points about choosing churches to fit our needs rather than seeing how we can worship and serve God. But, unfortunately VR Church is an actual thing, and we have mixed feelings of whether or not this is ideal for what the church is called to be. Specifically with the idea of VR Church Baptisms.
