About Today's GuestAndy Gasper is the President and CEO of Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting wounded, ill, and injured service members as they transition from military service to civilian life. Warrior Foundation Freedom Station provides transitional housing, peer support, mentorship, financial and career guidance, wellness services, and community connection through its Freedom Station residences in San Diego, helping medically retiring warriors prepare for long-term success.Under Andy's leadership, the foundation has expanded its mission to include a structured 18-month transitional housing program that offers wraparound support services designed to empower residents to pursue education, careers, and independent living. Sandy Lehmkuhler -- Founder and CEO of Warrior Foundation Freedom Station
Povas is a former resident of Freedom Station I and was also named the 2019-2020 San Diego County Veteran of the Year by the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park. During a deployment to Afghanistan, an IED exploded beneath the floor of the house that Povas and his team entered, severely injuring everyone. Although Povas sustained serious injuries, he treated his teammates first to keep them alive. Povas moved into Freedom Station I while recovering, which helped him transition to civilian life. He earned a degree from the University of San Diego and now has a thriving career in finance. He continues to stay involved with the foundation, helping his fellow service members. City National Bank employed Povas after he graduated from the University of San Diego.
Josue is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Corporal who lived at Freedom Station I. He was a fire team leader with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines out of Camp Pendleton. On October 21, 2010, Josue was on a morning foot patrol. On the way back to the base, his engineer stepped on an IED, hitting him and Josue. Josue lost his left leg above the knee and his left eye. During his recovery and while awaiting his medical discharge, Josue and his wife Debbie moved into Freedom Station I. Being combat-wounded and among other service members, he felt comfortable, knowing he was surrounded by other transitioning warriors who shared things in common. Josue was also a founding member of the Wolfpack wheelchair basketball team, a program he started while recovering at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Today, he enjoys spending time with his wife and sons and is pursuing his passion of handcycling.
Chris is retired Petty Officer Third Class, U.S. Navy. Warrior Foundation Freedom Station providing him with hiking gear and modified boots that could accommodate his IDEO leg brace, allowing him to stay active and even return to active duty. He has since medically retired from the Navy and has been very active with the foundation helping other Warriors. He is a member of the WFFS Cycling Team and has participated in numerous cycling competitions. He also leads the foundation's surfing program for ill and injured warriors. Chris has a successful career in cybersecurity and entrepreneur. He is developing a surfing app with his business partner and plans to launch next year. Chris is married with a daughter and owns his own home.
