Ron Hampton, DC Representative for Blacks in Law Enforcement of America and former Executive Director of the National Black Police Association, and Dr. Sharon Anderson, attorney, business consultant, and former law school professor and lecturer at Howard Law, join us to talk about the testimony of the Minneapolis Police Chief in the Derek Chauvin trial that directly points to his escalating the situation and arguments of the defense trying to poke holes in the Chief’s testimony, and how policing in general currently does not promote peaceful conflict resolution approaches. We also talk about how the Chauvin trial has sparked a series of proposed reforms in police departments nationally and how successful these could be. Bryan MacDonald, journalist specializing in Eastern Europe and Russia talks to us about growing tensions between Russia, Ukraine and the United States, with reports of Russian troops massing near eastern Ukraine amid a flurry of ceasefire violations, Ukraine approving a security policy to retake Crimea, and how the conflict is covered by western media, where Russia is always characterized as the aggressor. We also talk about U.S. assurances of support for Ukraine, what kind of actual support would the U.S. provide, and how this could play out if the crisis in the region worsens.Jon Jeter, author, former Washington Post bureau chief and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist with more than 20 years of journalistic experience, joins us to talk about Janet Yellen’s comments on instituting a global minimum corporate tax, how true are the claims that this would stop a “race to the bottom.” We also talk about taxing the large number of corporations that have not paid any corporate tax for years, and whether this potential tax money would be used for public investment in the new infrastructure plan. Psalmayene ‘Psalm’ 24, award-winning playwright, director and actor to talk about his brand new piece “The Freewheelin' Insurgents,” the experience of creating digital works for theater companies, and the state of American theater after Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) theatremakers published the letter “We See You, White American Theater.”

Let’s talk about the power of mentoring POC within the ranks of corporate America to bring about change. Women of color can’t stand in line to be picked for leadership roles, we have to ask for the opportunities and not be afraid to take that step. Elaine Montilla has put that power into her TEDx Talk, The Value of Mentoring Women and Minorities in Tech. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmKE-Oc-Qu0) and also stating that staying feisty in tech is a strength. In this podcast, we talk about the journey into tech, coming from the Dominican Republic at age 16 not knowing English, to the lack of leadership within ERG’s groups at big tech, which Elaine has written about on her website, 5xminority.com (https://5xminority.com/) , as a Forbes Technology Forum contributor writer. As strong women in tech, our challenges to our ascent into leadership roles, C-Suite or just starting our business, is so exhausting that we need to find our support communities that are led by mentors or internal leadership that are not always within your company, University or household! As she has stated, “we need new voices at the table or bring the table you built with you!” YES! We are both aligned in this purpose as our path, to keep building the confidence bridge and to be mentors to those who have a hard time seeing themselves going into leadership roles or opportunities that are not reflected in the tech industry or in STEM. We ended on Elaine’s poetry “How Dare You Get Angry”, (https://5xminority.com/how-dare-you-get-angry) which summed up our whole conversation, be your authentic self and challenge the status quo! We agreed that we need to trust ourselves more and that you can do what you put your mind to, and ask for support in those larger opportunities. We See YOU and keep going! We got you!  Gracias.

First and foremost, Rest In Power to George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and the hundreds of black lives that were lost to police brutality. We felt it necessary to dedicate this entire episode to the injustices placed upon on race and the power that each and every one of us has. We think it's important for our counterparts to know that ALL LIVES WILL NOT MATTER UNTIL BLACK LIVES MATTER. There is no reason why police brutality and racism should still be effecting our system today... but after hundreds of years of starvation wages, mass incarceration, racist politicians, lack of opportunties.. (shall we go on?) THIS IT THE OUTCOME. No, George Floyd is not the only reason black people are protesting right now, he was only the tip of the ice burg. It's time for people to start calling a spade a spade. And another thing, for those black influencers that WE put on..... WE SEE YOU. We see how you aren't speaking up for us, we see you trying to 'protect' your brand, we see you CRYING over Gucci. It's pathetic and extremely embarrassing. Geek Girl in the News looks at the awesome or not so awesome news that will make you go either: "YAY" or "OMG I can't believe that." The latest and greatest geek girl news from January 2020 covers Australia's eSports dominance, why James Bond won't EVER be a woman, Professor Umbridge's new role, the media's racist hot takes, Batwoman's renewal, and the first look at what Disney+'s Marvel shows! We are SO GLAD to be back and bringing the latest and greatest geek girl news to your ears. Did ya miss us!? Because we missed you! Both of us are excited for 2020 and have some pretty incredible interviews already lined up we know you're going to love! Today's episode is all about these awesome news stories. First up - we're totally jealous of Australia's stance on eSports. They're 100% paving the way for the rest of the world to drool over. I mean, starting competitive eSports at a middle grade level!? YES PLEASE! And sadly, despite some leaked images and pretty big rumours, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli says it's never gonna happen. While we're a bit bummed, Amanda makes a great point (as usual XD) that James Bond is a PERSON - so anyone can play him, while 007 is a TITLE - which is much more open to interpretation. Whatever the next Bond films bring, we're hopeful for some badass female representation! We're also sorry to report that The Crown has announced it's ending after 5 super successful seasons, with none other than Imelda Staunton (perhaps better known as Professor Umbridge) playing the good Queen Elizabeth. WOAH. Is it just us or is that WAY HARD to picture!? We're also shaking our fists at the racist media - WE SEE YOU and we WILL call you out, Batwoman's success, and the exciting Marvel trailer played during the Super Bowl. What’s your take on these news articles? In this episode of Geek Girl in the News, we covered these news stories: Women, Schools, PUBG and More Get New Australian Tournaments In 2020 (https://esportsobserver.com/oceania-recap-dec-2019/) Why There Will Never Be a Female James Bond (https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/01/james-bond-female-007-broccoli) The Crown Will End After Five Seasons With Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth (https://www.themarysue.com/the-crown-five-seasons-imelda-staunton-as-queen-elizabeth/) Twitter: Racism and the Media (https://twitter.com/haqemnotweeter/status/1218883970600861699) Twitter: Batwoman is renewed! On Episdoe 163 of the Mama Bear Dares Podcast, Tesi and Leslie begin with a look at institutional racism in the American healthcare system. They focus on Linda Villarosa's incredible article, "Why American's Black Mothers and Babies are in a Life-or-Death Crisis,"in a segment they call "We Read It, We Loved It, Let's Discuss." The two are more than troubled by what Villarosa reports. Not only are shaken by the terrible disparity in death rates between white and black babies and women, but by the fact that this disparity has everything to do with the lived experience of being a black woman in America. Leslie and Tesi talk through this information and dig into the research because they believe the way of the Mama Bear is to learn and then lean in. This episode is about seeing—seeing the struggles of others and then processing them and fighting for change AND seeing the goodness in those around us and acknowledging that beauty. Because of that, the Mama Bears end the episode with a segment called "We See You"where they celebrate the everyday acts of love and kindness put forth by the women around them. Originally published on Glennon's Facebook page    To The Brave Ones, This is cruelly specific to you. No generation before you has ever faced anything like this: Students being shot and killed in classrooms while adults do nothing. What’s happening to you -- it has a new face -- but underneath? It’s oldest story known to humanity. It’s the story of evil born of greed. Because there are two kinds of evil. There is the visible evil This is the evil you see on the news. The evil that happens when a kid shoots up a school. That kind of evil is often sparked by illness, pain, circumstance, hopelessness. But we’re here today to talk about a different kind of evil: a behind the scenes kind of evil -- not the evil that led the shooter to pull the trigger -- but the evil that put a weapon of war in his hand. Brave ones, that kind evil is harder to see because it hides behind fancy suits and degrees and good arguments and slick smiles and fake patriotism. This kind of evil is born in boardrooms and private jets and golf courses and handshakes between powerful people who plan how to divide us. And it’s not complicated, Brave Ones, It’s born from nothing but old-fashioned greed. It’s born when the love of money and power trumps the love of people. It’s unleashed when power decides to sacrifice lives for money, and when they wrap their decision in the American flag, in the name of God, in the name freedom –- so we’ll smile and cheer while our deaths line their pockets. This kind of evil, Brave Ones, is not new – it’s when the greed of a few , in order to profit, strategizes to divide us and convince us to be afraid of each other. To convince us that we are against each other, when really these greedy few are only for themselves and We the People – We the People – who have been taught to fear each other, have the very same interests: our freedom, and our safety, and our children. Greed is powerful – always has been. But you know what’s even more powerful, Brave Ones? Courage. The story of our country is that humanity’s greed only reigns for so long – only until the people being sacrificed rise up and together say: ENOUGH. Like the abolitionists rose up. Like the suffragettes rose up. Like the freedom riders rose up. Like the Vietnam War protesters rose up. Like the civil rights heroes who marched with King rose up. And the civil rights heroes who knelt with Kapernick rose up. Like women all over the world rose up to say TIME’S UP because ME TOO and like the young gymnasts -- who joined arms and stood on that witness stand and shook with fury and conviction as they looked Larry Nassar dead in the eye and took him down together -- rose up. Like the Parkland Prophets rose up in the face of their own pain and with their passion and intolerance for hypocrisy awoke our entire nation. And Like YOU. LIKE THE AMERICAN STUDENTS OF 2018. Who -- on February 23 -- rose up together to say to power: “WE SEE YOU. Your greed is not patriotism. WE ARE THE PATRIOTS and we say: No country is free whose children are not free. “ YOU, who on February 23rd, became the BECAME THE LEADERS YOU WERE WAITING FOR. You are not alone as you make history today. You are taking your rightful place in the long line of American freedom fighters. You are staking your claim on the side of history that knows and has always known that the Power of Love Overcomes the Love of Power Everytime. History shows us again and again, Brave Ones, that the game is long but when love shows up LOVE WINS. On behalf of us parents, as you continue to rise and overcome the world’s greed with your love – I beg you, we beg you, to remember two things. FIRST: Please- as you rise- Honor each other’s humanity. Our generation got this wrong, Brave Ones. We demonize people and groups who think differently than we do. We pledge blind allegiance to tribe and party and turn up our noses and close our minds and hearts to each other. We reduce each other to headlines and clickbait. We allow power to keep us afraid of each other – arguing with each other so we’re too busy hating each other and loving our own self-righteousness to make any real change at all. We allow power to use the oldest trick in the book: Keep them afraid of each other so they don’t turn on us. And that’s why we failed you. This is why we haven’t kept you safe. Because we –as a generation -- decided that being right is more important than doing right. So, Brave Ones, decide differently. Don’t fear each other. Talk instead of tweet. Ask Questions. Be curious instead of judgmental. Seek first to understand. Listen to the kids whose parents have brainwashed them differently than your parents have brainwashed you. Fight bad policy instead of each other. Think beyond. Beyond party, beyond race, beyond gender, beyond sexuality, beyond tribe, beyond your parents, beyond Congress, beyond the Presidency…. YOU ARE THE GENERATION of BEYOND. The categories we’ve made for ourselves are killing us. Disregard all of them, and be humans among humans. When they tell you to fear each other, LOVE each other. And Second: Honor YOUR own humanity, Brave Ones. Rise and fight, Yes, but don’t forget to laugh and dance, too! It’s okay to be heartbroken and angry and it’s also okay not to be. Life is brutal, yes, but life is also beautiful, and the sun still shines, and art is still being made, and food is still delicious, and people are still AMAZING! Listen loves, in the face of fear and oppression and danger, Joy is the fiercest act of resistance. So as you fight for your lives, Brave Ones, don’t forget the things that make life so worth fighting for. Keep Marching, Yes, But dance while you march us into the future you are creating for all of us. So Brave Ones: Your parents are so proud of you. We are sorry that we didn’t protect you. We were confused until you rose. It all felt hopeless until you rose. But you have restored our hope and cleared our minds and strengthened our hearts. Your courage has helped us find our courage. And we will follow you and fight beside you until till we’re all free. Because you are the ones we’ve been waiting for, too. We love you.

It's easy to fall victim to our inability to live an authentic life simply by giving up our agency and forgetting that we're the ones steering the ship. Whether it's because we're trying to please someone, we're trying to protect or bolster our reputation, or we just don't know how to say no, so often we end up going places that we have no desire to be, engaging in battles that ultimately don't matter, and spending precious energy on things that are soul-sucking. Co-hosts Leslie and Tesi tackle these ideas in a segment called We Read, We Loved It, Let's Discuss and then jump into a new segment called We See You, which is a celebration of modern-day motherhood and the ways that so many are wearing it with incredible grace and gusto.
