Where does our DeLorean take us this week? Efren Ramirez returns to joins us as we revisit the 1984 Joe Dante classic, Gremlins. All this and more before heading Back to the Future! 88 Miles Per Hour Podcast: The Podcast that travels Back in Time to revisit the movies & music we grew up with.
In this radical episode of Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine, Dave and Milt hop in their DeLorean — flux capacitor fully operational — and set the date for June 16, 1984. They're not just cruising through the Billboard Top 10; they're living it like extras in Footloose. The episode kicks off with a heartfelt and totally tubular tribute to Dave's late father — think The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, but with better dad jokes. From there, it's a parade of parachute pants, popped collars, and personal memories as they discuss the artists who ruled the airwaves: Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, and Cyndi Lauper — basically the Justice League of 1984 pop. Of course, it wouldn't be Past Tens without a few twists. There's a Playdate Quiz that would stump even The NeverEnding Story's Atreyu, a musical mashup segment that's more chaotic than Gremlins after midnight, and their signature song substitution game — think Indiana Jones swapping the idol for a bag of sand, but with Huey Lewis tracks. Some highlights: 00:54: A heartfelt memorial for Dave's father, complete with more heart than Kevin Bacon dancing alone in a warehouse. 08:33: Pop Culture Highlights: Ghostbusters hit theaters, Purple Rain was on the horizon, and nobody put Baby in a corner (yet — Dirty Dancing was still a few years away). 15:22: Countdown kicks off — Night Ranger's “Sister Christian” taught us all what "motoring" really means (spoiler: it's not what your dad thinks). 38:01: Musical Mashups — imagine Footloose meets Thriller but performed by the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. 39:22: Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — the unofficial soundtrack to sneaking out past curfew in 1984. 44:54: Huey Lewis reminds everyone that the heart of rock and roll is still beating — even if it's wearing leg warmers. 59:33: Steve Perry's “Oh Sherrie,” a ballad so powerful it could get E.T. to phone home twice. 01:19:50: Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time” — guaranteed to make even the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man misty-eyed. 01:23:15: Cyndi's legendary ties to the wrestling world — she could literally have body-slammed a Goonie. Milt also teases his upcoming trip to Africa, though we're unclear whether he'll be traveling by Toto song or Temple of Doom bridge. It's a journey that's equal parts nostalgia, musicology, and a John Hughes movie montage. Crank up your Walkman and join the ride — just don't feed Milt after midnight.

Real Life Things kicked off with stories from Friday night's bonfire, where the nature of reality was hotly debated between toasted marshmallows. That conversation somehow spiraled into a serious (and slightly absurd) discussion about Noodles and Soba—Ben's son's pet rats—and the potential benefits of getting female rats fixed. Apparently, doing so can add about a year to their lifespan by preventing reproductive cancers, but the surgery's cost is a tough sell when you're in what Ben called “debt paydown mode.” Devon floated the idea of unscrupulous “rat hustlers” faking the procedure, which—frankly—feels like a dark Netflix documentary waiting to happen. From there, it was a short hop to a conversation about whether rats lay eggs (they don't), Jurassic Park's “life finds a way,” and then straight into tearing apart Gremlins logic. What even is “midnight,” anyway? Local time? Greenwich Mean? Galactic zenith? And why are we trusting a kid instead of the old shopkeeper? Gremlins may now officially live in the “science fantasy/biological fiction” corner of the canon. Saturday brought gaming with their friend Greg. They played Relic Blade, where Devon managed to escort a yak to safety despite Steven's attempts at sabotage. Greg used a clever trick involving a D20 and gravity to determine movement direction, which frankly should be in the rulebook. They also played Marvel Dice Throne, where Devon's Wolverine got obliterated almost immediately thanks to poor positioning and cruel dice. Then came Living Well, a minimalist dice game with retro 70s-style art and some satisfying ability upgrades. Plans to play Arcs got shelved after a medical emergency—Nicole was hit hard by the heat and ended up needing CPR at the hospital (despite having a pulse and breathing, which… yeah, it was a weird night). She's recovering now. Future or Now TV-wise, the gang wrapped up Season 4 of Love, Death & Robots—with highlights including a talking cat, an occult bomber mission, and gang warfare against colossal babies. Over on Amazon Prime, they watched the Secret Level take on Pac-Man, which was surprisingly grim and humanoid-heavy. Ben and his son also dove into Scott Pilgrim territory, rewatching the movie and starting Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which quickly turns into a clever alternate universe story that's fun, stylish, and charming enough to inspire a trip through the graphic novels. Ben gave a thumbs-up to the newest season of Black Mirror, calling one episode a bit conceptually broken but championing another as a "new Callister." Book Club In Book Club, the crew dug into “Liking What You See: A Documentary” by Ted Chiang, from Stories of Your Life and Others. Framed as a mockumentary, the story centers on Caliagnosia—a reversible condition that disables facial beauty perception. The ethical and social ramifications are explored through interviews and propaganda, making the story feel eerily real. It raises questions about freedom, superficiality, advertising, and the influence of unseen tech on our minds. Tamara's personal journey through switching Cali off and on again added a human element to the philosophical questions. Everyone agreed: it was a banger of a story. Next up for Book Club: the first three chapters of A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. Get reading!
*From the Desk of Pete* Expectations were pretty low for a sequel that is hated by the masses but after watching the movie I'd like to ask these masses, "Have you actually watched Robocop 2, or are you just repeating what others are saying?" Robocop 2 was a first time watch for Anna and Pete but was such an unexpected homerun that neither of the hosts can explain the distain for the film. Robocop is a masterpiece of action cinema but 2 is a hoot. Think of it like Gremlins and Gremlins 2, very different films that are both incredibly entertaining. Robocop 2 is a strong recommend, just don't take it too seriously.
As part of another filmmaker who's signature style we get to study, we reviewed screenwriter Zak Penn's virtual reality themed movie trilogy: LAST ACTION HERO, READY PLAYER ONE and FREE GUY. Why is the first film gone from the butt of many jokes to the perfect Hollywood insider satire? What similiarities does it share with other meta-comedies Purple Rose of Cairo, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and even UHF? And what are some of the best one-liners? Why is the second film actually fun on its own terms despite being based on an infamously hackneyed book? What easter eggs to MINORITY REPORT does Spielberg insert? Why did most of us not see it given how bad the trailer for it was? Why is the villain in FREE GUY so similar to other evil movie CEOs from GREMLINS 2 and ROBOCOP? And how do these films deal with themes of virtual reality effecting the hero's actual humanity? Plug yourself in to some immersive worlds that defy any kind of reality and come game with us! What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, and I've got artist and author of the Banned Book Club series Ryan Estrada here to talk about! Yes, we really get into the “Gremlins” original script by Chris Columbus and its novelization by George Gipe!In the original script, Billy is fantasy author and sticks up for himself much more. Of course, the gremlins themselves are also more vicious. Gone is the good mogwai character of Gizmo. In fact, they kill and eat the dog, decapitate Billy's mom, and eat some McDonald's customers (rather than the food). Thankfully, Joe Dante lightened the tone and brought in some humor. In contrast to the mysterious thriller of Columbus, Gipe expands the backstory of the creatures. In his origin, the mogwai were genetically engineered by an alien named Mogturmen to be gifts and peace offerings to neighboring worlds. Unfortunately, he miscalculated, and the gifts turned out to be mischievous and murderous pests. Can't win ‘em all, I guess.Medieval sword replica? Check. Alien geneticist? Yup. Gremlin in a toolbox thrown into a lake? Only if you want to setup a sequel! So grab your sword, save your crush, and kill some little green monsters to this episode on the “Gremlins” original script and novelization!RyanEstrada.comIG: @ryaneatradadotcomFB: @RyanEstradaGive us a buzz! Dan & Manny welcome Jen & P.T. from The Long Take Review to put Jim Henson's classic Labyrinth to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “We might spend the most time on fart jokes.” -P.T. Much like the topic of this episode, the conversation is a collection of twists, turns, deceptions, off-color fart jokes, confusion about David Bowie's tights, and hallucinations. The gang goes into their love of Henson's use practical effects, they talk about all the memorable characters, the film's lasting impact on cinematic history, and did we say fart jokes. They also touch on the announcement of a sequel directed by Robert Eggers, is Gremlins 2 better than the OG, the influence of David Bowie's performance, and the broader legacy of Jim Henson's creations like The Dark Crystal. It wouldn't be an episode of The Nostalgia Test without all the tangents, memories of Matt Antoniou, and Manny ignoring Dan trying to end the podcast, though he had help from P.T. The Epic Conclusion to the Original Star Wars TrilogyJoin hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell, along with special guest Francis Zagarigo, as they dive into the thrilling conclusion of the original Star Wars trilogy—Return of the Jedi (1983). This episode explores how the final installment wraps up the saga with its unforgettable characters, iconic scenes, and the ultimate battle between good and evil.Francis shares that this was his first time watching the film and declares it his favorite of the trilogy. Nathan, on the other hand, ranks it third but acknowledges its powerful ending. The hosts debate the merits of the Jabba's Palace sequence, with Krissy humorously describing it as "a Colombian drug dealer's backyard party," complete with dancing girls and bounty hunters. The group also examines Luke Skywalker's character arc, noting his all-black costume and monk-like demeanor, which hint at his potential temptation by the dark side. They highlight the reveal of Luke's green lightsaber, a practical filmmaking choice that perfectly aligns with his character's evolution.Key Topics CoveredThe impressive Jabba the Hutt puppet that weighed 2,000 pounds and cost $500,000 to buildThe problematic yet iconic "Slave Leia" metal bikini costumeThe Ewoks as an allegory for indigenous peoples overcoming technologically superior invadersIan McDiarmid's scene-stealing performance as Emperor PalpatineThe emotional redemption of Darth Vader and his sacrifice to save LukeThe satisfying conclusion that brings the original trilogy full circleSpecial edition changes, including CGI additions and an altered musical numberHost Ratings and Deep Cut RecommendationsThe hosts rate the film highly: Francis and Nathan both give it 8.5 out of 10 Ewoks, while Krissy insists it deserves a perfect 10 out of 10 Ewoks. For "deep cut" recommendations, Nathan suggests The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King as another excellent trilogy conclusion, Francis recommends Gremlins 2, and Krissy suggests Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars.Whether you're a lifelong Star Wars fan or experiencing the trilogy for the first time, this episode captures the magic that made Return of the Jedi an unforgettable cinematic experience that continues to resonate with audiences decades later. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! As we continue our short literary season, we replay one of our favourite shows: Anna's chat with Dr Zazie Todd - CompanionAnimal Psychology - talking about her book Purr. In our conversation on cats , the lack of science on their behaviour (compared to dogs), she recount several hilarious anecdotes on Gremlin, which will make you realise why she named him Gremlin, the lengths he went for to help Molly when she was poorly, and why Gremlin was quite a cat for someone's first feline! He is so missed, but we hope is he is reunited with Molly across that rainbow bridge. Mastering Life's Adventures: Being Your Best Self Through Soul Evolution!
We continue to take a deep dive into the layers of life's most exciting and challenging moments, welcome to The Deep Dive Series into Mastering Life's Adventures with Dr. Judith. In this series, we explore life's complexities through thought-provoking questions, with Dr. Judith inviting incredible guests to share their wisdom on topics that matter most to you, our listeners. Today's discussion stems from the powerful insights found in Shirzad Chamine's Positive Intelligence (PQ) Program, where we'll explore the inner workings of the saboteurs (or gremlins) that can take up space where your soul is meant to be with a special Guest, Christi Holder, LMT sharing her experience with the PQ Program.A fascinating and often overlooked aspect of life—the gremlins that try to occupy the space where your soul is meant to be. These gremlins, or saboteurs, are the inner forces that hold us back and cloud our sense of clarity and purpose. We discuss how these gremlins operate in the world, how they influence our thoughts and actions, and how we can begin to recognize them in ourselves and others. In this episode, we explore:The different types of gremlins and how they manifest in your life. The neurochemistry behind these negative patterns and how they display themselves in our soul's journey. How to recognize the gremlins in yourself (and others) to quickly shift your attitude and mood. The power of accessing your Sage—the wise, intuitive, and divine part of you that aligns with your True Nature.Practical tools to develop your Sage and reduce the grip of gremlins, making space for deeper listening, guidance, and growth. As George Bernard Shaw once said, “The greatest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” Gremlins often create that illusion in our own minds, clouding our ability to hear our higher selves. Today, we'll dive into how to break through that illusion and connect with the wisdom of your true nature. Ready to silence the gremlins and make space for your Sage? If you're interested in learning more about the Positive Intelligence Program, PQ for Busy People, reach out to Dr. Judith at drjudithmla@outlook.com. In the subject line, write “PQ for Busy People” and share a little about your interest and journey.About Our GuestChristi-Anne Holder, LMT, is the owner of Health Solutions Medical & Sports Massage in Apex, North Carolina. In 2005, filmmaker Christopher Nolan was about to become mainstream with the first movie in his superhero trilogy. Meanwhile, a group of developers in Derby were working on a video game tie-in for said movie that wouldn't turn out to be quite as popular. We're taking a look at an action adventure game that was neither a precursor to a game based on The Dark Knight, nor The Dark Knight Returns. We're talking Batman Begins. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we chat a little bit about trailers that feature Batman smiling, Trailer Voice Man, and Phoenix International. We also look at how important it was for this to be an interactive version of the movie in almost every way, as well as a cavalcade of celebs: a disinterested Morgan Freeman, a bloodthirsty Cillian Murphy, anbemused Michael Caine, and a Christian Bale that thinks all this video game stuff is a complete waste of time. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: the first glimpses of many things that would become staples in the Arkham games; instilling fear in your enemies by interacting with very specific parts of the environment; goons dropping their guns when they're scared; the optic cable from Splinter Cell; an exceptionally violent inverted takedown; familiar punching and kicking, as performed by a more acrobatic, yet less fluid Batman; the weird context-sensitive special move thing; NO BATARANG BUSINESS; climbing things with 70% arm and 30% leg; bonus Game Boy Advance opinions; a lack of yellow paint; training in the Himalayas; driving the tumbler around Gotham like it's a Burnout game; dingy rooms illuminated by beams of light coming through blinds; restrictions vs limitations; being rewarded(?) with clips from the film in between levels; odd differences in the narrative; Gary Oldman's absence; and a lockpicking minigame that's the same every single time. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Batman Begins is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Deus Ex on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 4: 6:05pm- While speaking with the press from the Oval Office alongside President Donald Trump, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele revealed that he has no plans to return Abrego Garcia who was deported to El Salvador after the Trump Administration determined he was in the U.S. illegally and a member of the gang MS-13. In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court determined that Garcia's deportation was, in part, the result of an “administrative error” and that he should be returned to the United States—though, after the error is corrected, the man would ultimately be eligible for deportation anyway. While speaking with the press, Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller denied an administrative error ever occurred. The Trump Administration also noted that because Garcia is a citizen of El Salvador, they have no recourse if Bukele denies their request for release. 6:10pm- A 38-year-old Harrisburg man was charged with setting fire to the Pennsylvania Governor's mansion. According to reports, the man threw two Molotov cocktails into the residence and planned to beat Governor Josh Shapiro with a hammer. Thankfully, Shapiro and his family were unharmed. President Donald Trump condemned the act and stated: “A thing like that cannot be allowed to happen.” 6:15pm- While speaking with the press from the Oval Office, President Donald Trump said there is plenty of blame to go around for the longevity of the war between Russia and Ukraine—emphasizing that Russia is obviously at fault for invading, and Ukraine/Joe Biden are at fault for not seeking a peace agreement. 6:20pm- While appearing on CNN's State of the Union with Jake Tapper, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett revealed that 130 countries have reached out to the White House about negotiating new trade deals. 6:30pm- Is Hollywood out of ideas? A new Wall Street Journal piece notes that original movies are struggling at the box office—which could be why we are constantly getting reboots, sequels, and movies based-upon popular video games, like “A Minecraft Movie.” Warner Bros. is expected to reboot “Gremlins” and “Goonies” in the next couple years. 6:40pm- Jim Acosta has a podcast?!?! So does Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear…and Chuck Todd. Does anyone other than Matt listen to these? 6:45pm- Breaking News: According to The New York Times, the White House is expected to ask Congress to rescind $1.1 billion in federal funding for NPR and PBS. Weekday afternoons on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Rich Zeoli gives the expert analysis and humorous take that we need in this crazy political climate. Along with Executive Producer Matt DeSantis and Justin Otero, the Zeoli show is the next generation of talk radio and you can be a part of it weekday afternoons 3-7pm.

Gremlins, Borders, and Recipes for Resistance This week we're joined by Jessica Snow and Liga Spunde, two artists navigating the world through comics, street theater, and occasionally letterpress and photoshop. Jessica Snow walks us through her wide-ranging practice—from illustration and letterpress to building massive puppets and organizing street performances to attempting to confronting the entangled realities of border politics, ecological collapse, and resistance. Her work with Kitchen Table Press and collaborative projects like Recipes of Resistance blend protest and performance into shared, tangible experiences that challenge the quiet violence of contemporary life. Meanwhile, Liga Spunde brings us deep into a psychological terrain. Working with a unique computer-generated drawing style, Liga explores the emotional weight of the traumas of contemporary life—from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the various ways we experienced the pandemic to the existential task of making a 6 page comic. Her work resists tidy narratives, instead making room for ambiguity, emotional excess, fragile and detailed humor, and a specific fascination with Gremlins. This episode was recorded as part of Chris Sperandio's Comics Without Borders (but say it in French) event at Rice University—an international gathering of artists, publishers, and thinkers reframing what comics can do in turbulent times. (More here: Comics Without Borders.) We cover a lot of ground—Latvia's premier comic publisher, post-crisis psychology, DIY print culture, and why strange books and big puppets might still save us all. This is Bad at Sports at its finest: loose, live, urgent and embedded, and full of strange joy.
