"Birthdays are participation medals of life." - John Morgan It's always a treat when on your birthday, John Morgan III tells you he wishes you well and respects your work in your business, and that he also doesn't give a sh*t it's your birthday. In this week's episode, Amer shares his experience of visiting Omaha to see Warren Buffet along with his experience of witnessing some fantastical stereotypes of a Southern American (guns and beer guts) Later in the episode, Austin, Amer, and John discuss their relationships with meditation - Austin who has entropied some time away from the practice, John who practices in waves, and Amer who practices meditating on weekdays. John mentions that using Sam Harris' app, "Waking Up", he received a a notification message from Sam Harris that said "I envy your meditation streak", which John found charming because he did actually feel like his consistency had improved from being aware of this streak. However, Sam Harris' message continued to explain that if you're only present to satisfy your streak, we've really missed the mark on what the intentions of mediating should be. There are no participation medals for meditating. There's no credit if you tell others. There's not even a benefit for you if you haven't participated correctly in the practice. Ultimately, you are either able to live your life completely, or you are not. Take this episode as a reminder to audit your intentions in meditation. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's episode of The Weekly Call. In this weeks podcast, we take a deep dive into the lens Amer had casted on his world - that he needed to prove his success to be deserving of love, from family, from friends, and potentially a partner someday. He shares an experience he had with his housemate and close friend James, who sat him down after a retreat to let him know that there are certain actions/inactions he takes as a that makes James feel like he's not being the greatest friend. In this episode, Amer acknowledges that these actions were selfish, with only his best interest in mind and the guys dive deeper into how this mindset plays into different aspects of Amer‘s life including how he chooses to discuss business as well as choices in his romantic life. This blindspot was heavily unpacked in this episode so if you share a similar world view of Amer or are curious as to how one can overcome it, sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode of The Weekly Call. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theweeklycall/message

DTFF: The Volunteer Firefighter Podcast - Down To Fight Fire
E215 - Training - FR and Structure Fire FTX. Weekly Call update x 2 Structure Fires This week we debriefed our latest Field Training Exercise, a multi patient Medical Response combined with a Structure fire. Todd went over a garage fire and the rest of us discussed a dog house fire that spread to the dwelling. WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. EP 156 | Audaciously Auditing Austin In this week's episode, Austin shares how despite him being a part of The Weekly Call, he continues to practice behaviours that are counter to his goals. He admits that he hasn't read a book in five months, he hasn't meditated in five months, he hasn't had an impromptu date night with Miranda in a long time all in while his business has sustained success and continues to hit its milestones. John points out that balancing various areas of your life - balancing health, wealth, love, and happiness, are critical to seeing quality of life improve in general. Amer provides a great analogy of cumulating water to nurture your plants then delaying watering your plants because you're intending to accumulate even more water for it. There is so much to learn from this conversation for everyone who chooses to prioritize career advances over other aspects of life, and in turn is unsatisfied with their life. Later on in the episode, the guys also have an interesting conversation about how they would be considering their lifestyle in the midst of a recession. ~ As always, you can find the links to our Patreon, Spotify and Apple Podcast profiles in our Instagram bio as well as our YouTube clips channel! We have a bit of a reflective episode for you here today, we want to know how often you guys say “no”. Austin has a realization after talking to Amer and John, that he personally says “no” a lot less than he thinks he does. Not to say that saying yes is bad, it just seems to be a reflection of the perceived control you have over your life. We really look deep into this phenomenon this week, leading into a conversation of where The Weekly Call started compared to where it is now. “Just try telling someone in University that it may not be worth it.” [John Morgan III] ~ In this week's episode, The Weekly Call boys explore why people are more willing to accept information with more history (old) over modern information (new) to maintain their previously conceived notions of reality. This is an easily applicable concept to investing in a home or university degree. “This is why I loved studying philosophy, first things you get taught are fallacies and finding them and I just found 20 major cognitive biases that we fall under that don't allow us to make effective decisions. The bandwagon effect is a common one fact which is the probability of one person adopting a belief increasing based on the number of people who hold that belief.” [Amer] We've very much upheld the idea that homeownership is the path to wealth and getting a university degree is part of that process, even though we have evidence that there are many other ways to becoming educated and successful. “I think we can all agree that $1M is too much to pay to go to university… which means that that there is A PRICE where university does not provide enough value for the cost.” [John Morgan III] Listeners, when was the last time you were peer pressured to do something, you didn't really want to do? Take a minute to consider the incredible odds you faced to get to where you are today. What if you decided not to go to that party and never met your girlfriend/boyfriend, or if you didn't sign your name on that clipboard being passed around in class that turned into an incredible job opportunity? Each individual decision you make adds up to the point that the odds might have been somewhere in the range of 1 in 14 trillion to get to where you are now. Austin, Amer, & John share how they stumbled into running painting businesses and forming many key relationships in their lives through an incredibly unlikely series of events, they share insights on the changing economic environment we find ourselves in, and John spills his guilty pleasure of brushing his teeth naked in plain view of his neighbours.
