Send us a textThis week you host Downrigger Dale talks with Fort Peck Fisheries Biologist Heath Headley and Fort Peck Hatchery Manager Wade Geraets about how the annual Walleye egg collection effort went, which wrapped up not long ago. Rigger was also joined by a special guest that has not been on the Podcast for a while. Yeah, The Captain of the Montana Outdoor Radio Show came by and like usual when he and Rigger get together things tend to get "western" as they say. Yes indeed everyone had a great time, but they also got into some very interesting discussions full of a lot of fascinating questions that we are guessing you may not know the answers too but once you hear them you are going to be amazed, surprised and maybe even a bit shocked. This amazing discussion covered of course the usual topics, like how many Walleye eggs were collected but they also covered things like how the entire Walleye egg collection process works, of the eggs collected how many will actually produce Walleye and of those how many actually will end up in a lake near you and hopefully on your dinner plate? Rigger even got into some Jurassic Parkish type subject matter when he asked Heath and Wade if they think they will someday be able to alter those eggs to dictate the sex of the walleye in the egg and maybe even go as far as those scientists in Canada who recently created wolf pups with ancient Dire Wolf DNA and create a Mega Walleye! Yeah we told you it got "western"! Bottomline, this is an AMAZING Podcast! So what are you waiting for? Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks to outdoor reporter, writer and Hunting and Conservation Editor for Outdoor Life, Andrew McKean. Andrew wrote a wonderful article for the 2025 March/April edition of Montana Outdoors Magazine. The title of the article is Double Bacon Cheeseburger with Fins. This fascinating article covers the history and the effect of the introduction of the Cisco into Fort Peck Reservoir over 40 years ago and the effects this amazing forge fish continues to have on the sport fish that live in the Reservoir. Of course, most avid Fort Peck Anglers are aware of the Cisco, but they may not be aware of how the Cisco continues to grow the population of world class sport fish in the reservoir and how they are changing the behavior of the larger of the Walleye, Pike, Lake Trout, of course the Chinook or King Salmon and maybe even the larger Catfish. Now, many of you reading this may be asking what do you mean? Well when you listen to this Podcast you will hear Andrew talk about why more and more anglers are catching for example large Walleye and Pike suspended in deep water, often when they are fishing for the King Salmon! In fact, during the podcast Andrew even gives a stunning prediction that one of these days soon there will a new record Pike caught deep that will exceed...wait until you hear that weight! He also talks about other positive things about this amazing forge fish that you will for sure find VERY interesting. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale had a great conversation with Montana FWP Fisheries Biologist Heath Headley about Walleye in Fort Peck Reservoir and beyond. If you love to fish for Walleye, want to learn about them or have just been curious about how in the heck the FWP can collect 83 million eggs from Walleye in Fort Peck then this Podcast is for you! Heath explains all kinds of things in this fascinating podcast, like what they do with all those eggs, and where all those Walleye go once, they are hatched. No, they don't all go back into Fort Peck. So where do they go? Out of the 83 million eggs how many fish actually hatch? Out of all those that hatch how many will live once they are stocked in a waterbody? When you listen to this podcast you will learn the answer to those and many other questions that Rigger asked Heath Headley. Downrigger even asked Heath this question, “Heath how can I catch more Walleye?”! We think you will get a kick out of the answer Heath gave Downrigger. Another interesting topic that Rigger and Heath got into was the incredible size of the Walleye that are being caught in Fort Peck Reservoir lately. Rigger wanted to know if Heath had any thoughts on that and he told Heath about some suggestions he has received from listeners like, should there be a slot limit of some kind for Walleye on Fort Peck to preserve those big fish? For example, one suggestion a listener had is to maybe have a slot limit during tournaments. Listen and see what Heath's thoughts were on that and many other things. This podcast really covered a TON of stuff all about Walleyes. Of course, it would not be a Montana Outdoor Podcast with Heath Headley if Rigger didn't ask him about what the King Salmon season was going to be like on Fort Peck. What did Heath say? Well, you will need listen to the podcast to find out!LINKS:One question that Rigger asked Heath had to do with what water bodies in Montana get stocked with Walleye and how many get put in each one? Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/591  Presented by: Visit Helena, MT Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors  In this episode, we chat with Justin Waayenberg from Adipose Boatworks to delve into the groundbreaking world of resin infusion in drift boats, offering anglers the ultimate guide to navigating the transformative trends in boat durability and weight. As we unravel the secrets behind choosing the perfect drift boat for your adventures on the Missouri River and beyond, listeners are treated to invaluable safety tips, ensuring an unmatched fly fishing experience. This episode promises to equip you with the knowledge and inspiration to take your fly fishing journey to new heights, all while emphasizing conservation and the deep-rooted passion that connects us to the rivers we cherish.   Episode Chapters with Justin Waayenberg on the Future of Drift Boats 3:05 - Justin discusses Adipose Boatworks' dedication to producing high-quality, top-tier boats, comparing their brand's quality to well-known companies. A significant focus of the discussion is on the adoption of resin infusion technology, a method that Adipose has been researching and perfecting for over three years. Additionally, he touches on the environmental considerations of their manufacturing process and how it compares to using materials like carbon fiber. 14:37 - He talks about their range of models and the design philosophy behind them. Adipose offers three main models: the Flow Skiff, the Runoff, and the South Fork Skiff. The Flow Skiff, their flagship model, is designed for the specific needs of western Rocky Mountain rivers, offering stability, low draft, and maneuverability in shallow waters and windy conditions. It's particularly suitable for fishing with three people, a common scenario among fly anglers. The Runoff model caters to those needing a boat that can handle bigger water and class three rapids, featuring a larger bow for more significant wave trains while maintaining maneuverability. Unlike traditional dory designs meant for navigating big rapids rather than fishing, Adipose's designs aim to provide a versatile solution for anglers. The third model, the South Fork Skiff, is a traditional design dating back to the late '80s, characterized by its flat bow (pram design) and low sides, making it ideal for two anglers. Despite not being a big seller, it has a cult following among those who appreciate its design for specific fishing conditions. 21:57 - Justin highlights the thoughtful design considerations that go into each model, such as optimizing space for gear storage, ensuring stability, and enhancing maneuverability. These skiffs are not only capable of handling multi-day trips on rivers like the Smith River in Montana but also excel in efficiently utilizing space to accommodate gear and providing a stable fishing platform. 29:24 - We talk about his home waters. His go-to river is the expansive Missouri River, stretching from Tosin and Three Forks to Fort Peck and the North Dakota border. This river offers a diverse fishing experience, from fly fishing for trout to casting for pike and carp. He also highlights Helena, Montana, as an ideal spot for anglers due to its central location. From Helena, numerous renowned rivers like the Blackfoot, Big Hole, Yellowstone, Madison, and others are within a two-hour drive, offering a variety of fishing experiences based on weather conditions and target species. 32:49 - For those seeking guidance or local insights on the Missouri River, Justin recommends several fly shops, notably Headhunters in Craig and Trout Montana in Cascade, known for their expertise and willingness to share information with anglers. Other notable mentions include Montana Fly Goods in Helena and Wolf Creek Angler. These shops are praised for their knowledgeable staff, extensive fly selection, and up-to-date river reports, making them invaluable resources for anyone fishing the Missouri River. 34:34 - Justin tells the optimal times and strategies for fishing the Missouri River. Early spring, particularly mid-April to late April, is recommended for experiencing significant dry fly hatches, with the river temperature climbing into the high forties and low fifties. For those willing to brave the colder temperatures, Justin notes that fishing conditions on February 19th, for instance, could allow an angler to catch a hundred fish in a day. The conversation also covers the importance of following weather patterns and choosing fishing techniques based on seasonal changes. Justin mentions that as the season progresses, anglers can expect a variety of hatches, including PMDs, Tricos, and Caddis, but advises caution in late summer and fall when weed growth can complicate fishing. 40:35 - The conversation touches on the geographical and ecological transitions around Helena, the Continental Divide, and the historical significance of areas like the Gates of the Mountain, described by Lewis and Clark. Justin highlights the rich fishing experiences available across different water types in Montana, from tailwaters to freestones and reservoirs, underscoring the state's commitment to natural river management and the absence of river stocking since the mid-20th century. 45:19 - We talk about an upcoming drift boat clinic organized by Adipose Boatworks, scheduled for April 27th. This clinic, offered in collaboration with Mending Waters Montana—a Helena-based veterans organization—aims to educate participants on all aspects of drift boat handling. Mending Waters Montana is dedicated to supporting veterans through fishing trips, rod building, fly tying, and offering access to exclusive private waters and popular fishing destinations like the Missouri River. The clinic covers a comprehensive range of topics from the basics of drift boat design differences, preparation and launching techniques, to rowing strategies and fishing from a drift boat. The event is free, with attendees encouraged to donate to Mending Waters Montana. Those interested in participating in the clinic can contact Adipose Boatworks via email to register. 48:41 - We dig into safety tips for drift boat handling, which are crucial for anyone attending their drift boat clinic or navigating rivers independently. Key safety advice includes: 1. Always Pull, Never Push: Justin emphasizes the importance of pulling rather than pushing to slow down and maintain control of the drift boat. This technique gives the rower more time to react to obstacles by slowing the boat's speed, allowing for better maneuverability. 2. Avoid Tying Knots in the Anchor Rope: A common mistake is tying knots in the anchor rope to prevent losing the anchor. However, Justin advises against this because, in situations where the boat starts behaving unpredictably, it's safer to let the anchor rope go to avoid the boat capsizing. The cost of replacing an anchor is minimal compared to the potential loss of the boat or, more importantly, a life. 3. Don't Drop Anchor in Fast Water: Dropping an anchor in fast-moving water can lead to dangerous situations, including the boat getting lodged and potentially sinking. Justin recounts a tragic incident on the Missouri River where a boat capsized and resulted in a fatality due to the anchor being dropped in fast water. He advises rowers to anchor in calmer water or eddies where the bottom can be seen and the risk of getting the anchor stuck is minimized. 4. Floor Release Anchor Systems: Most drift boats come with a floor release anchor system. In case of emergency, rather than reaching for a knife or attempting to untie knots, the best action is to simply release the anchor by stepping on the floor mechanism, allowing the boat to free itself from the anchor's hold. 53:26 - Justin provides a variety of restaurant options in Helena ranging from casual to slightly more upscale, catering to different tastes and budgets. For a local beverage after fishing, Justin suggests visiting one of Helena's breweries, highlighting Lewis and Clark Brewery as a nationally recognized establishment. 56:27 - Justin emphasizes the appeal of Helena, Montana as a family-friendly town with plenty of outdoor activities, devoid of the college town atmosphere. He also highlights local attractions like the state capital building and Blackfoot Brewery, and emphasizes Helena's growing scene that caters well to families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. In this episode of the Montana Outdoor Podcast, you will learn all about Montana's Walleye fishery! But seriously this week we had Fisheries Biologist Heath Headley from FWP Region 6 in Glasgow, Montana on the show and we were able to learn all about Walleye in Fort Peck Reservoir and how Walleye are reared at the Hatcheries in Fort Peck and Miles City and placed into lakes all around Montana. The conversation with Heath went even deeper than that, however. Downrigger Dale and The Captain asked Heath all kinds of questions, like:How do you collect Walleye eggs for the hatcheries during the spawning season when the lake is still covered with ice like it is this year? How do they usually collect Walleye eggs and how many do they usually collect? (Spoiler Alert! You are not going to believe that number!!! WOW!!)If they can't collect many eggs this year due to the ice cover will the walleye populations around Montana be, ok?Do big Walleye produce offspring that will also become big Walleye?Does a Walleye return to the same spawning grounds it went to during the last spawning season?Wait a minute! In June of 1979, a 17 year old girl was found brutally murdered near Fort Peck, Montana. 17 year old Barry Beach was a classmate of hers and learned of her death on the news. He was interrogated by police three times, and all three times was told he was cleared and no longer a suspect. Several years later, while living with his father in Louisiana, Barry's step-mother had him arrested for supposedly helping her 14 year old daughter run away. Police found out Barry had been questioned for the Montana murder, and decided to question him for other Louisiana murders they needed to solve. After threatening him with the death penalty, Barry caved under pressure and confessed to the murder of his classmate back in Montana. Because he had been cleared three times before, Barry expected to go back to Montana and be cleared again. But that did not happen. Her church family and friends always just loved her. But she came to recognize that she was missing the whole that she knew was available to her. Since coming back to the Church, she has served in various callings, thriving because of temple service and charity. We've examined the ongoing challenges facing tribal governments as they grapple with high rates of substance use. And we've delved into the myths and contradictions of the drug court model in which Reneé and others can find themselves trapped. Season Four of the The Breach explores one central question: What happens when drug use during pregnancy becomes a felony? In our last episode, we met Reneé, a woman jailed under 240-D, a unique law in Fort Peck, Montana, that criminalizes substance use during pregnancy. As part of her sentence, Reneé was required to participate in a special court in the Fort Peck justice system known as Healing to Wellness Court. This is the tribal system's version of a drug court, which is often billed as a more humane solution to drug-related crime. Today there are more than 3100 drug courts operating in the United States, including more than 70 Healing to Wellness Courts. But beneath the assurances of compassion and the glossy data suggesting success lurk very real concerns about the effectiveness of this system. In this episode, host Lindsay Beyerstein speaks with drug court expert Denise Tomasini-Joshi. Together, they unpack the reality behind these band-aid courts and reveal how a seemingly humane solution falls short in practice.

Speaker or Performer: Clay Jenkinson Date of Delivery: April 2, 2017 Clay Jenkinson will talk about the ways in which Native Americans see resource questions differently from non-Indians. The talk will be based on Clay's reading of such books as John Neihardt'sBlack Elk Speaks, Paul vanDevelder'sCoyote Warrior, and Morris Berman'sThe Re-Enchantment of the World. Clay will attempt to show that as long as the two cultures see basic questions of the human relationship with nature in fundamentally different ways, there will be confusion and conflict in resource questions. In other words, sovereignty is only one of a number of issues at the center of the DAPL controversy. Water issues leave a particularly bad taste in the mouths of Native Americans because of the military and economic colonialism of the Pick-Sloan Project that dammed the Missouri River six times between Fort Peck and Yankton, SD, between 1945-1965.
