"You should raise Halleli in the spirit of Mom’s/Auntie Miriam’s memory: with love, happiness, and commitment to family, community, and to constant growth through learning." The master is required to give gifts to a Jewish slave when he/she leaves (severance pay). In what cases does the slave not receive these gifts? If a Jewish slave misses work because he/she sick, does he/she have to make up sick days? What is the amount of the gift that is given to the slave upon leaving? There are three different opinions. From what other law does each derive his opinion? What types of items can/should be given? Do slaves get passed down as inheritance? A male slave is passed down to sons but not to daughters or brothers (in the event the owner has no sons). A female maidservant, a male whose ear is pierced, and a male slave sold to a gentile are passed down to sons and not to daughters or brothers. From where are these laws derived? By Torah law, a gentile inherits from his father. However, a convert only inherits from his gentile father by rabbinic law, not by Torah law. The rabbis ruled that he inherits from his father to prevent him from wanting to go back to being a gentile to receive an inheritance.

Michael Kerzner is the highest-ranking Jewish member of Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government. Kerzner was appointed as solicitor general last June, shortly after being elected in the York Centre riding—his first successful foray into politics—as part of the Progressive Conservatives' sweep back to power in 2022. Now Kerzner is taking it upon himself to speak out for the Jewish community. Later today, he is scheduled to speak in the legislature about two hot-button issues: the annual Al-Quds day protest held in downtown Toronto a few weeks ago; and the anti-Israel positions held by a newly elected NDP MPP Sarah Jama, from Hamilton Centre. Kerzner calls Jama's record of tweets and speeches antisemitic—which some members of the Jewish community also feel have been hurtful. When millions of people around the world tuned in to watch Saturday's broadcast of the coronation ceremony of King Charles, one of them was Manitoba's lieutenant governor, the Hon. Anita Neville. Neville felt a particular attachment to the new sovereign—and not just because her job is to represent the King in her province. Neville had, just weeks earlier, flown to London for an in person tete-a-tete with her new boss at Buckingham Palace. They talked about the environment, Indigenous Canadians and the inner workings of the coronation ceremony itself. “I think he's going to be a very fine King,” Neville declared. With just days to go until Passover begins on April 5, the Atlantic Jewish Council sent out an emergency email to all its members advising of a shortage of matzah at the main grocery stores in Halifax. “Please note that there is no longer any matzah in any store in Halifax,” the note read, and advised the Jewish community that Rabbi Yakov Kerzner, of the city's Orthodox Beth Israel Synagogue, is trying to source matzah from Montreal. It may arrive in time for the first night of Passover, although Kerzner hopes it will come sooner. The growing Jewish community in Halifax has faced challenges for years when trying to source Kosher food for Jewish festivals: orders from Sobeys or the Atlantic Superstore don't come in on time, or they come with less product than they were supposed to. But this year, the local Jewish community says it is the worst it has been, requiring extraordinary efforts to help families observe Passover with the required foods, particularly the obligation of eating matzah. Her main research focus is quality improvement principles as they apply to venous thromboembolic disease and anticoagulation management. Ryan Kerzner graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy and a Masters in hospital pharmacy from the Université de Montréal. He has been a pharmacist at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal since 2008. He is one of the co-founders of the hospital's Antimicrobial Stewardship programs, in which he is still actively involved. He also works in Internal Medicine where he developed an interest in Thrombosis medicine. He officially joined the hospital's CETAC team in 2019, which is the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis & Anticoagulation Care. Gloria Harnett Kerzner was just weeks shy of her 18th birthday when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Like most other Americans, she wanted to help the war effort. The U.S. Navy created the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, or WAVES, in 1942 replace the tens of thousands of Navy personnel who were deployed to Europe and the Pacific. Gloria was eager to enlist. But she had to wait until she was 20 years old to join.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Kerzner shares memories of how she learned about Pearl Harbor and also the Hindenburg disaster in her home state of New Jersey. She describes her WAVES training in New York and Iowa and the work she did during the war at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station to help the war effort on the home front.

Now on to my guest today, Mark Kerzner,  who is cofounder of Scaia-Scalable AI and Elephant Scale, which offers training in using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and more.  Mark emigrated to Texas from Russia after earning a degree in computer systems in the late 1970s and started working in computer applications with oil companies. He became an independent consultant, specializing in AI and machine learning because he knew he needed a special skill to offer. He also started offering training and co-authored a book on Hadoop.  Mark offers insight into the evolution of AI and machine learning and explains why Facebook's facial recognition program was a turning point, leading to a huge leap in how we search and interact online and the implications for the future. Mark is now applying similar principles to helping lawyers more quickly find what they need for discovery while continuing to write and teach.  Now let's get better together. Actionable Insights “Just because you're good at something doesn't mean you should run a business doing it,” Mark cautions. Be ready to learn the ropes and acquire skills in other areas if you want to start a business.  Don't wait until your product is perfect. Mark emphasizes what many of our guests have recommended: get it to market, test it out, and then, once you've gotten feedback from your customers, keep reiterating.  Don't stop learning or trying to do better, and teach others.
