The Daily Hustle Podcast

A couple years ago on the Let Them Play Triathlon Across America, we had an incredible opportunity to get a private behind the scenes tour of Notre Dame... As a kid that grew up rooting for the Fighting Irish and a loyal subscriber to “Blue & Gold” magazine, this was beyond an awesome experience and walking through the tunnel and onto the field with touchdown Jesus behind us was surreal in every sense of the word.  The other day we finally watched “Rudy” with the kids and it brought the entire ND experience full circle... It had been a good 20 years since I watched the iconic flick from start to finish and at my more advanced age now, I definitely came away with a few lessons worth sharing. For those unfamiliar with Rudy's story, he grew up in a household of diehard ND fans and always had dreams to one day attend Notre Dame and play for the iconic Fighting Irish football team. After high school, Rudy, unfortunately, did not have the grades or football prowess to attend ND so he went to work in a factory... Rudy's best friend Pete was his biggest believer & would always try to convince Rudy to take a leap of faith to do everything he could to make his dream become a reality. When Pete tragically died in an accident, Rudy quit his job and moved to South Bend where he enrolled at Notre Dame's feeder school, Holy Cross. After several failed attempts, Rudy eventually got into Notre Dame, tried out for the football team, made the practice squad and busted his ass to the point where his teammates became easily annoyed by his relentless effort... Despite the complaints, Rudy just continued to do Rudy and the last game of his senior year, it was his fellow teammates that went to bat for Rudy demanding that he finally get to dress, be a part of the actual team, and lead the Irish out the tunnel.  At the end of the blowout game, the crowd who was made aware of Rudy's story in a school newspaper article, started chanting “Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!!!” Then, to the fans delight, he got a chance to go in on the kickoff team and then stayed in for the final play of the game... That's when the “you can't make this shit up” moment happened when Rudy miraculously sacked the Purdue QB. Ecstatic, the Notre Dame players hoisted Rudy onto their shoulders and off the field... Since that day in 1976, no other ND player has ever been carried off the field.  So... Here are 3 basic lessons we Daily Hustlers can all take to heart from Rudy's story: Don't EVER give up - Rudy had a vision and a dream of going to ND and playing football. Based on his grades and physical talent, the odds seemed long, if not non existent...  Follow the process - Sure, Rudy took an unconventional route but there still was a path to follow. Not everyone is going to have the road perfectly cleared for them; sometimes we need to figure out how to clear the road for ourselves...  The people will speak - So long as we stay committed to the work, our dedication will eventually be recognized. Rudy never compromised what he believed was the right way to best help prepare the team for their next opponent. Even though the other players were often frustrated with his all out effort, they eventually realized his value and demanded he be rewarded for his efforts...  Go Irish!

Listen in for the world premiere of Broken Greek from the brilliant journalist and broadcaster Pete Paphides (recorded at our very first online Salon, relocated from the Savoy). When Pete’s parents moved from Cyprus to Birmingham in the 1960s in the hope of a better life, they had no money and only a little English. Everything changed. The Paphides family opened a fish-and-chip shop in Acocks Green - The Great Western Fish Bar is where Pete learned about banter and Britishness. And music—all the music. Pete stopped speaking from 4 to 7 seeking refuge in bittersweet pop. From ABBA to The Police, songs provided a safe space from domestic tensions. This warm-hearted coming-of-age memoir will have you craving salty chips and a vinyl collection.  We’re delighted to share Pete’s world premiere of Broken Greek with you, and if you'd like to hear more be sure to tune in to BBC Radio 4 from 4th May when it will be their official Book Of The Week. Guest: Michael Tait of NewsboysAbout NewsBoysFor more than three decades, Newsboys have been defying the odds. After initially forming in Australia, they landed on American soil with only pennies to their name and eventually became one of the biggest bands in Christian music history. Today, Newsboys have sold more than 10 million units spanning 23 recordings. In addition, they’ve amassed eight Gold certifications, 33 #1 radio hits, four GRAMMY® nominations, two American Music Award nominations and multiple Dove Awards. Through the years, the faces of Newsboys have changed, but the mission has remained the same: One band. One heart. One brotherhood. Perhaps nothing embodies this mantra more than their current iteration as former members Peter Furler and Phil Joel join Michael Tait, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Jody Davis for a supersized season of touring and recording that’s ultimately resulted in a brand-new studio project, aptly titled United (FairTrade Services). The history-making reunion first began to take shape when the current lineup invited Furler to sing on the band’s worship single, “The Cross Has The Final Word.” Still, none of them knew the fire that collaboration would spark. “When you’re working together, you start to have conversations, and we started chatting about what it would look like to have two eras of the band tour at the same time,” Furler explains. “Before it started, we didn’t know if it was going to work or how it was going to work.”This initial uncertainty was due, in part, to the continued success the band has enjoyed since Tait took the helm in 2009. With signature songs like “We Believe,” “Born Again” and Platinum-certified mega hit “God’s Not Dead,” which birthed a film franchise of the same name, Newsboys have continued to collect career-defining accolades at full speed ahead. Instead, the idea of the blockbuster lineup was birthed naturally through their longtime friendship. After a nine-year absence, Furler—a driving force behind iconic Newsboys hits like “He Reigns,” “Entertaining Angels” and “Shine”—along with key former lyricist, vocalist and bassist Phil Joel, returned to the stage for a strategic limited run of “Newsboys United” dates. Heading into the first show, the six members were nervous, unsure of the outcome. However, their debut as a supergroup delivered a clear verdict. The combination of Newsboys—past and present—together again on one stage was unstoppable, and fans clamored for more. The band officially reunited on the highly-anticipated Newsboys United Tour in 2018 before headlining 2019’s Winter Jam Tour Spectacular—Christian music’s largest annual tour—and then joining Michael W. Smith on a 10-city worship trek. Collectively, they’ve now performed more than 150 shows nationwide. It was only a matter of time before they found themselves in the studio together again.“No one had a clue that this Newsboys United smashup would even work, and now who can deny it’s been nothing short of fantastic?” Tait remarks. “I often say God works in mysterious ways and mischievous ways. It’s been an absolute pleasure and joy.”Known for their unparalleled live shows, where the energy is at a fever pitch, the drum kit rotates, and the production is unmatched, Newsboys’ expanded lineup represents the same ideals on stage that the band members harnessed in the studio for United, where themes of friendship, unity and diversity organically emerged.“In a very un-united United States these days, it’s powerful to see a Caucasian and an African-American on the stage speaking the same message in a unified way,” Tait asserts. Furler and Tait’s unified front on stage translates to tape as they effortlessly trade lead vocals on the album, blending both the past and the present.Along with Geoff Duncan, Furler steered the production reigns and returned as a lyricist for the band, co-penning four of the collection’s 10 tracks. The funky groove of “Love One Another,” which he co-wrote, features guest vocals from former dcTalk member Kevin Max, while tracks like the worshipful “Set Me Ablaze,” originally recorded by Bethel Music, and soaring lead single “Greatness Of Our God” continue Newsboys’ rich history of recording songs that resonate with fans of all ages.“‘Greatness Of Our God’ comes off live like a freight train. It’s powerful,” offers Tait of the radio hit. “As believers, it’s important to constantly be reminded of the greatness of our God, and the song says it perfectly.”“When they hear the music, I hope it’s not as preachy as it is practical—things that have worked in our lives that we’ve found freedom in, like freedom in Christ,” he adds. “We just want to love people through the music.”For Furler, selections like “Only The Son (Yeshua)” and “Fearless” helped personally define the band’s unexpected evolution. “I think, for me, it’s not so much the songs themselves,” he reflects, “but these songs represent moments when we realized it was going to work vocally.”Both frontmen consistently compliment one another. “Mike’s an amazing singer. He’s one of the best on the planet,” Furler emphasizes. “We had to try to figure out how our voices were going to blend.”“There was a selflessness in making the record,” Tait adds. “When Pete sings, it’s magical.”The magic of two lead singers, six life-long friends and one rock-solid mission form the undercurrent for both the album and the band. “Recording this Newsboys United album did so much more than just bring two eras of the band together,” Furler observes. “It has made us one in spirit, purpose and love.”No matter who’s taking the lead, Newsboys knows what they’ve forged over 30-plus years is rare. It goes beyond music, awards and notoriety. No matter what stage they’re gracing, Newsboys will be standing tall as a symbol of unity, defying the odds, together.newsboys.comNewsboys are coming in town!!! Pete Caputa, CEO of Databox, talks about their strategy of creating an ecosystem for agencies to learn about Databox, and how building out a partner program helped Databox grow to $1.5M in annual revenue. Visit https://www.leadquizzes.com/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.   Topics Discussed in this Episode: [01:48] Pete’s experience at HubSpot [05:07] How Pete got involved with Databox [07:45] How Databox started [10:32] Building out the partner program at Databox [12:41] Pricing for Databox [13:16] What they do to attract more agencies to Databox [15:25] How they define top partners [16:02] How they went about finding agencies [17:37] Their strategy of creating an ecosystem for agencies to learn about Databox through article contributions [21:21] Creating surveys and getting input from different agencies [22:00] Why they outsource the writing of articles [24:36] The Databox free program and why they decided to keep it [28:28] How they got more users to use their software [30:00] How they come up with ideas to help improve adoption [32:27] When Pete felt that Databox was going to fail [34:42] The one thing they did that had the biggest impact on their growth [35:38] The area that Pete was personally involved in growing at Databox   Key Takeaways: Agencies are being bombarded by software companies right now, and so the product really needs to work for them. The first thing that software companies get wrong is they start a partner program and they don’t even think about how the agencies are going to do their work. Most agencies hesitate to spend even a few bucks a month and so it’s good to set up the price so that it’s a very minimal amount of money per client, and it’s very easily justified by any time savings they would get from automating. The nice thing about agencies is they kind of pay attention to each other and they learn from each other, so once you get a few partners on board, it becomes a lot easier to be more credible with the rest. Action Steps: Invite agencies to contribute to articles that you’re writing as a way for you to get in front of them without being promotional about what you do. Consider offering a freemium product by looking at its benefits to sales and marketing.   Pete said: “I realized there was a real pain point for agencies, specifically, in that they were manually producing their reports at the end of the month for every client by logging in to multiple tools… and realized that we could automate a lot of that process for them.” “I look at marketing combined with a freemium product and to me, it just feels like a cash register because, especially with organic content marketing, once you figure something out, it produces returns for you for a long time with very little care and feeding.”   More from Pete Caputa: Pete’s LinkedIn Pete’s Twitter (@pc4media)   Tools and resources mentioned in this episode: Databox   Sponsor link 14-day Free Trial to LeadQuizzes   Thank you for listening! Wus really good Brand Nerds? Damn it feels good to be right back at cha with a brand new banger. I know, I know, the title of this episode of Brand, Beats & Bytes is kinda waaaaa? Trust me Brand Nerds, there is perhaps no one on the planet who knows more about what the world’s best CMOs need to be successful. The perspective Pete drops on this podcast is just sick (for those unfamiliar with urban colloquiums, sick=profound knowledge). Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program (Ha). When Pete was a kid, he loved baseball and sold candy turtles to raise money for his team. The prize for the ‘kid’ who sold the most candy turtles was a spanking new bike. Pete coveted this bike. I mean like for real, for real. He, all by his lonesome, did his best to out work, out wit and out market his contemporary, yet he finished third multiple times (with no new bike). ‘Who beat Pete’ you may be asking? The ‘kids’ who parents helped them pummel poor Pete by selling the candy turtles for their kids (#notkool). However, Pete learned a valuable lesson which is but one of the gems contained herein, sometimes when you lose, you actually win! Buckle up Brand Nerds. #petekrainik #marketing #branding #advertising #digitalmarketing #media #socialmedia #brandsbeatsbytes #thecmoclub #cmo

This week I’ve got Pete Mattila from Tasmania, which is off the southern coast of Australia. We talk about his shop by the water’s edge, his US apprentice journey, and his design process.  Before we get to the interview I wanted to mention today’s sponsors, First we have the Adirondack Folk School.  It’s a non-profit school located in Lake Luzerne, in upstate New York.  The blacksmithing program at the Folk School includes 24 classes with an incredible line of blacksmithing instructors this year. To see the complete list of classes or to register, visit their website: www.adirondackfolkschool.org. I’d also like to thank the New England Blacksmiths, the ABANA affiliate serving Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island. Who by the way will be driving the ABANA 2020 Conference in Saratoga, NY Check us out at  http://www.newenglandblacksmiths.org/ Also They will be offering the Age of Iron weekend event at the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, It’s happening the 1st weekend in August, 3rd and 4th. Those interested in further details can contact Cindy Dickinson at cdickinson@hancockshakervillage.org  or DM @HayBudden on Twitter or Instagram. If you mention I’m here for the blacksmithing you’ll get an extra $5 off at the door! Thanks NEB! OK, let’s dive right into this interview with Pete. What We Talked About Pete first went to a technical college for welding, then he got a job as an apprentice was with an industrial blacksmith at the Ipswitch railyards in Queensland, Australia. There he forged a lot of industrial tools for mines, alloy steel forging. Pete decided to go to art school and received his Bachelor of Fine art. He then received a scholarship for his master’s in fine art. Pete talks about his apprentice journey through the United States, which included working with Albert Paley, Mountain Forge and included a research residency at the Metal Museum. We talk about his design process which he includes 3 basic things: additive process, subtractive process and material displacement. When Pete works with clients for commissioned pieces, one of the things he asks for is 3 words from the client that encapsulates what they envision. About 80% of the time Pete sandblasts his sculptures first and then adds a chemical called Black Fast. Also follows up with beeswax. One of Pete’s goals this year is to convert his gas forge into a veggie oil burning forge. Guest Links Website - https://www.petemattila.com/ Instagram is @pete_mattila_

Lousy San Francisco Podcast Season 3.1 - SKMorton.com

We move along at a pretty good clip this week. Unfortunately we never actually get anywhere. It was as if our combined preparation time of 4 minutes was all for naught. To be fair, a pall had come over the Bomb Shelter, this week, as San Francisco's revenue machine had hitched a ride with the show and didn't kick in for gas. We started with a discussion about our neighborhood surge price parking meters and moved onto imaginary property taxes.  By the time we got to updates, the whole gang - including SK, Pete, Shantwon, and new Throng member Cheeze It Du Jour - was drenched in drops of cynicism (Train's latest). There was some discussion of a shooting at Burlington Coat Factory, the closing of Forbes Island, a family feud involving the Cafe Trieste, and 100 years of MUNI using the letter J for their agenda. When Pete abandoned the proceedings for bluer pastures, we tried to proceed with the night's planned topic, Nocturnal San Francisco. We get as far as late night bowling spots, viewing the Path of Gold from the Peak of Carnage, and a rehashing of the fate of Lefty O'douls. If it weren't for a new jingle for the Lousy SF Walking Tour SK might have called it quits. Instead he gauged the weather, took a nap, and called it acrimony.

: I met Pete Williams a few years ago when he spoke at a conference I was at. I was really taken with his attitudes, philosophies and ideas, and we loosely kept in touch. When Pete joined the world of social media recently, I saw my opportunity to get him on the show. Pete has a degree in exercise physiology and a Master in Medicine and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is a national and international speaker and runs his clinic from Central London. In this episode we talk about functional medicine – what it is and what it means in practice. We also discuss the effects of chronic stress on the body, allostatic load, the signs and symptoms of chronic stress/burnout, and what you can do about it. We also swap ideas about what corporate leaders can do to change their culture. This is a longer show than our usual format, but it’s a good one. Pastor Pete Cropsey had a brutal past.  From a violent molestation in Mexico at age 7, to his journey through heroin smuggling, burglary, prison, a motorcycle club and then accepting Jesus at Calvary Church where he became a Pastor.  This is an incredible and inspiring three part story of redemption.   “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves” - Colossians 1:13   Pastor Pete’s father committed suicide because he had brain cancer.  When Pete went through his personal effects and realized his father had that bad reaction because he himself had been molested and never came to terms with it. When Pete met a guy named Max who seemed so cool, he became a hero and Pete began dealing heroin for him. Soon Pete began doing heroin and after his first taste he became a slave for the next 20 years. Pete got to know the guys from the Vagos motorcycle club and hung around until he was asked to prospect.  This was a year long process. While he was in the club he became a Christian and went to bible college, but even though he knew his life was changing he didn’t want to abandon his brothers.  He finally went to national and asked if he could leave the club.  He had become the National Sergeant at Arms and earned respect and so they allowed him to keep his stuff.  They always treated him with honor. Pete’s passion for reading led him to read books from all religions at a young age, but the verses he heard and read from the bible are the ones that rang true. Spirituality is plagued with relativism, but the bible is black and white. Pete had heard God, but in prison wasn’t ready to serve.  He was prideful and didn’t like authority and had to portray this tough image because of what had happened in Mexico and with his father. Pastor Pete told the story of his molestation publically at a meeting and was set free by the act.  So many people suffer and hold it inside. “The purpose of worship is to open our hearts to God and let him wash us off” - Pastor Pete.  Be vulnerable before God. www.deadmanwaking.net   For past shows and to learn more about the God's Men of Influence community, check us out atwww.godsmenofinfluence.org Join us on Facebook for our daily devotionals and updates and please like our page www.facebook.com/GodsMenOfInfluence        Help us spread the Word and please rate our show on itunes and leave comments for us.
