See if you can join the dots – Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, The Beatles. Well, there's one man who sits at the centre of it all, and it's more than likely that you won't have heard of him: Jackson C Frank. A damaged, wounded singer-songwriter who wowed the British folk scene and presaged psychedelia and punk, Jackson only produced one album – but its influence can still be heard today in the work of artists like Laura Marling, Counting Crows, even Daft Punk.Oswin and Carla are delighted to be joined by the music journalist Pete Paphides to discuss Blues Run The Game, how hurt and pain can drive creativity and the transformative power of music.

They all know it's Dynamite, And the music went on and on and on…The history books will tell us that, in theory, 1973 shouldn't have worked.Terrorist campaigns, oil shortages, petrol rations, power cuts. Peters and Lee.However, as the saying goes from great adversity comes great art. Or was it great sitcoms? Either way, 1973 stands not just as one of the greatest pop years of the decade, one could argue of all time. Really, I hear you cry? Where is the evidence that a year that could see Donny Osmond hit the top spot twice needs to be elevated to such greatness? And we didn't even win the Eurovision Song Contest? CONVINCE ME!1973 was perhaps the year where the decade finally shook off the ghosts of the Sixties. The Seventies had arrived and with breathless confidence, swagger and a reclamation of joyful pop by ‘the kids', the year provides an embarrassment of musical and cultural riches. 1973 had put on its best glam gladrags and was ready to light the fuse for the rest of the decade.Colour had arrived across UK TV sets just in time for the like of Slade, Elton, Bowie, Roxy Music and a host of others to trailblaze a lightning streak of supercharged escapism across the charts and into our homes every Thursday evening on Tops of the Pops. Suzi Quatro, Alvin Stardust, Wizzard and Mud joined the glam trail with huge glittery doses of pop sensibility and killer choruses, that at times felt as if the centre couldn't hold. David Essex provided one of the most memorable songs of the year as ‘Rock On' also spearheaded 1973's revival love affair with Rock and Roll as seen in the smash hit film ‘That'll be The Day'. But this stellar year also gave us a wealth of classic soul and funk, many of which still soundtrack our lives 50 years later. Let's celebrate the greats such as Diana Ross, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye. The list of highlights (just like the beat, pop pickers) goes on and on.And in 2023, the team at NOW have proudly provided us with a Yearbook and extra volume that together curates over 140 hits and memories from 1973; a pop year like no other. A compilation that is worthy of the title A CLASSIC.Joining me for this special episode is music consultant and Duckie legend Mark Wood and music journalist, author and cofounder of needle mythology records Pete Paphides. Discover why and how Mark has documented the whole year through his amazingly tireless, daily Facebook updates - and why 1973 is such an important year for him. Revisit Pete's memories of growing up in a chip shop and the sights and sounds that triggered his own fascination with pop. Along the way, also share in some fabulous anecdotes and stories including the tale of Roy Wood's lost man bag, Alvin Stardust's minders, which 1973 topped Saint Etienne's all time list, a plethora of Beatles related links and facts and how some Daytona divine intervention soundtracked a 21st century fairground ride for one of our guests. All of this and much, much more. Whether you were there first time around or are rediscovering the glam and excitement all over again, this is a very special episode that you'll not want to miss!Like Christmas, everyday baby. Madonna is still in the spotlight 45 years after bursting onto the pop scene in the 1980s, inspiring fashion, dance and youth culture, as well as being the world's best-selling female artist of all time. Author of the biography Madonna: A Rebel Life, Mary Gabriel explores what's behind her enduring influence and music critic Pete Paphides assesses last night's Celebration tour performance, rescheduled after her recent serious health scare. The latest film from director Martin Scorcese focuses on the Osage Nation community, who back in the 1920s had become rich overnight when oil was discovered beneath their land in Oklahoma. Based on a true story, Killers of the Flower Moon sees an improbable romance develop between Leonardo DiCaprio's Ernest and Lily Gladstone's indigenous Mollie, as members of her Osage tribe are murdered under mysterious circumstances, killings which are investigated by what was to become the FBI. Published in 2015, Adam Sisman wrote what is considered to be the definitive biography of John le Carré. What he left out about the author befits a Cold War spy novel: he was secretive, self-mythologizing and even deceptive. Sisman's new book, The Secret life of John le Carré, reveals for the first time the frustrating process of writing a biography about the writer who hid his infidelities and inconsistencies. The Forward Prizes are among UK and Ireland's most coveted poetry awards. These include best poetry collection, first collection, single poem - written and, new for this year, best single poem – performed. Tonight in Leeds the judges will announce the winners as Front Row is on-air - and we should know who has won the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem – Written, and be able broadcast the poet reading it.

In this episode we invite the inimitable Robyn Hitchcock to reminisce about his heroically nonconformist career from the Soft Boys to 2022's Shufflemania! After Robyn explains his recent return to London from his adopted Nashville, Barney, Mark and Martin hear about his hippiefied but not entirely psychedelic '60s youth – plus his early immersion in the far-out folk of the Incredible String Band and the songs of his greatest influence Syd Barrett. He talks about how the Soft Boys did – and didn't – fit into the UK's punk scene of the late '70s, but also how they became a totemic cult influence on American acts from R.E.M. to Gillian Welch & David Rawlings. Clips from John Tobler's 1973 audio interview with '60s folk-rocker turned Asylum Records singer-songwriter David Blue provide an opportunity to discuss the former David Cohen's Greenwich Village buddy Bob Dylan and the huge influence on Robyn of Bobsongs like Blonde On Blonde's 'Visions of Johanna'. Meanwhile the 10th anniversary of the death of underground-press legend and Deviants rabble-rouser Mick Farren takes us back to the revolutionary '60s and the heyday of International Times – as well as to such seminal Farren pieces as 1976's NME rallying cry "The Titanic Sails at Dawn". Mark rounds off the episode with quotes from newly-added library pieces about 'Terry' hitmaker Lynn "Twinkle" Ripley (Evening Standard, 1964), Motown chauvinist Marvin Gaye (Phonograph Record, 1977), Henry Rollins né Garfield (Washington Post, 1981) and more… Many thanks to special guest Robyn Hitchock. Music writer Pete Paphides has turned to songwriters and musicians, from Abba to the Undertones, to make sense of all the big moments in his life. So when he got the call he was dreading, to say that his father was dying, it was music that saw him through shock, denial and loss. In this moving audio essay, read by the author, Paphides explores both the unpredictability of grief and the way his playlists gained fresh meaning – particularly the traditional songs his Greek-Cypriot father listened to, which remind him of home and wet weekends above the family fish-and-chip shop in Birmingham. “This is the gift that grief gives you,” says Paphides. “When a loved one leaves this world, they take with them the invisible membrane that stood between your senses and the songs they receive.” For months, he had been looking forward to the premiere of the Abba Voyage hologram show; now, it falls on the eve of his father's funeral. When he attends the show, how will it affect him? This article was originally published on 11 June 2022. You can read the text version (with playlist) here. A quirky, thought-provoking look at the curious afterlife of pop stars. Nick Duerden has spent many years interviewing the most famous musicians on the planet. Without exception, they are at their most interesting when they've peaked, and when they are on their way down. In many ways, this is when these former idols are at their most heroic, too, because they reveal themselves not only to be humane and sensitive, but also still driven to create, to fulfil their lingering dreams, to refuse to live quietly. Some sustain themselves on the nostalgia circuit. Others continue to beaver away in the studio, no longer Abbey Road so much as the garden shed. The desire for adulation is a light that never goes out. We live in a culture obsessed by the notion of fame—the heedless pursuit of it, the almost obligatory subsequent fallout. But what's it like to actually achieve it, and what's it like when fame abruptly passes, and shifts, as it does, onto someone else? These are tales of heroin addiction, bankruptcy, depression, divorce—but also of optimism, a genuine love of the craft, humility and hope. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

For my 100th Nostalgia Interview, it was a massive pleasure to meet Pete Paphides, a music journalist who has written for Melody Maker, Q and Time Out and has been the chief music critic for The Times. Pete’s memoir Broken Greek, with the wonderful sub-title A Story of Chip Shops and Pop Songs, was Radio 4’s Book of the Week. Pete also went to Lampeter, where he studied Philosophy from 1989-92, and Pete begins the interview by talking about his fond memories of rainy mornings in Lampeter and the culture shift he experienced from having left the city of Birmingham for one of the smallest campuses in the country. Pete relays his experiences of hearing the sound of sheep at night and we talk about the notion of ‘infinite choice’. Pete tells us about his more recent, very felicitous visit to a shoe shop in Aberaeron and we learn that Pete wrote Broken Greek in coffee shops – and how Lampeter kickstarted the idea of the café as office. Pete talks about his reasons for writing what he calls a ‘confusion memoir’ and how he wanted to put the reader in his head space. We talk about his very early memory of sitting in his parents’ car and hearing Leo Sayer’s ‘When I Need You’, how from the ages of 4-7 he had selective mutism, and we learn that for Pete music was a proxy means by which he understood his life. We talk about childhood diaries, how music was an imperfect mirror of what was going on in the world around him, how we tend to look back on childhood decisions and tastes and how it is wrong to apply to them adult categories. Pete dissects the concept of Guilty Pleasures, which is applied to Abba, and we learn why Hag’s Record shop is the reason why he decided to stay in Lampeter. We learn why Pete made a point of keeping in the book the real name of one of the ‘characters’ from his past, and we learn his thoughts on Paul McCartney and ‘Mull of Kintyre’, and what happened on Christmas Day 1977 involving a racist neighbour and an unexpected act of kindness. Then, towards the end of the interview we learn why writing Broken Greek was an escape of sorts. We learn how Pete came to write it and how he never thought he’d make a living out of writing (as a music journalist). Pete tells us why his 10 year old self was in some ways smarter than his 25 year old self, and at the very end we discover why Pete looks forward practically but looks back sentimentally. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Pete Paphides and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

British journalist, author and music lover Pete Paphides' new book "Broken Greek" is a memoir of his childhood and the important role music played in it. Paphides' parents arrived broke in Birmingham in the 1960s from their native Cyprus in the hope of a better life. The family fish and chip shop, The Great Western Fish Bar in Acocks Green, is where Pete learned about pop music, being a bloke, Britishness, and belonging. Now married to journalist Caitlin Moran, he shares some musical favourites with us, including songs by ABBA, The Police, and The Rubettes.

When Pete’s parents moved from Cyprus to Birmingham in the 1960s in the hope of a better life, they had no money and only a little English. Everything changed. The Paphides family opened a fish-and-chip shop in Acocks Green - The Great Western Fish Bar is where Pete learned about banter and Britishness. And music—all the music. Pete stopped speaking from 4 to 7 seeking refuge in bittersweet pop. From ABBA to The Police, songs provided a safe space from domestic tensions. This warm-hearted coming-of-age memoir will have you craving salty chips and a vinyl collection.  We’re delighted to share Pete’s world premiere of Broken Greek with you, and if you'd like to hear more be sure to tune in to BBC Radio 4 from 4th May when it will be their official Book Of The Week. Music critic Pete Paphides tells the story behind three 'follow-up' albums - from Dexys Midnight Runners, Fleetwood Mac and Suede - with tales of musical pressure, creative differences, personal politics and mixed results. How many bands have found themselves with a massive and often unexpected hit album, only to struggle with the creation of their next opus? Sometimes the follow-up exceeds the first album, but often nerves kick in and bands are removed from the very stimulus that created their magic in the first place, finding themselves in a world of creative confusion, sycophants and accountants. Pete Paphides talks to musicians, producers, and critics to explore the stories of follow-up albums with the same expert knowledge he brought to Lost Albums. Programme 1: Dexys Midnight Runners - Don't Stand Me Down. Kevin Rowland and Helen O'Hara give rare interviews about a pivotal time in Dexys Midnight Runners' history. Having been the best selling UK band of 1982 with their massive hit single Come On Eileen and the hugely popular album Too-Rye-ay, Dexys took some time to consider what to do next. Don't Stand Me Down was brave and different to Too-Rye-Ay. Rowland had a clear vision and went to great lengths to record and mix it to his own specifications. His interest in his Irish roots and Irish politics was one of the themes of the record. Misunderstood in its day, it received poor reviews but has since gone on to receive critical acclaim. Produced by Laura Parfitt A White Pebble Media Production for BBC Radio 4.

Music critic Pete Paphides tells the story behind three 'follow-up' albums - from Dexys Midnight Runners, Fleetwood Mac and Suede - with tales of musical pressure, creative differences, personal politics and mixed results. Programme 3: Suede - Dog Man Star In 1991, Suede was named "the best new band in Britain", with a string of hit singles and a universally acclaimed debut album, 'Suede'. Flamboyant singer Brett Anderson and incendiary guitarist Bernard Butler became feted as song-writers. David Bowie was amongst their fans. The scrutiny that followed took its toll on their relationship. Determined to write a dissolute conceptual masterpiece, Anderson exiled himself in a gothic pile in North London while Butler questioned the paraphernalia that came with pop stardom. Bereavement and clashes over the album's producer heightened the tension and, with just one part to complete on the album, Butler walked out for good. Suddenly, having blazed the trail for Britpop, they returned with an album deemed out of step with its sunny positivism. But almost two decades on, Suede's second album Dog Man Star reappeared to a plethora of 5 star reviews. Producer: Laura Parfitt A White Pebble Media Production for BBC Radio 4.

Pete Paphides talks to musicians, producers, and critics to explore the stories of follow-up albums with the same expert knowledge he brought to Lost Albums. Programme 2: Fleetwood Mac - Tusk How do you follow a record that sells 21 million copies worldwide and spends over 30 weeks at number one in the US album chart? The answer is Tusk - the album Fleetwood Mac recorded in the wake of 1976's Rumours. Despite joining the band just three years previously, this was the record that saw Lindsey Buckingham impose his will on Fleetwood Mac using the studio as a crucible in which he shovelled intra-band infidelities and his new-found love of punk. In 1979 it was deemed a failure, nicknamed "Lindsey's folly" from industry insiders. After 35 years, it has been reappraised as their boldest, most forward-looking release, "a peerless piece of pop art", influencing Radiohead and REM. Produced by Laura Parfitt A White Pebble Media Production for BBC Radio 4.
