Hey there, music-lovers. Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives. I'm your host, Jeff Miers. On today's episode, I'm joined in the studio by two members of a band that has spent the last 30-plus years embodying the very definition of “indie” music. Barry Privett and Terry Clark are two-fifths of Carbon Leaf, the Richmond, VA band that has spent the past three decades crafting a body of work that blends elements of rock, Americana, pop, and folk, and performing that work to devout audiences in excess of 3,500 times. Along the way, they became the first unsigned, independent band to perform on the American Music Awards, shared stages with the Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer and Jason Mraz, among many others, and have consistently taken us back to a time when eclecticism and diversity within a band's sound were considered a positive. During our chat, which took place on the afternoon of their late April performance at Buffalo Iron Works, Barry and Terry spoke freely about their journey, the importance off embracing the moment with a sense of urgency in both life and music, and the trials and triumphs of a life spent being truly independent. Welcome to Why Music Matters, Barry Privett and Terry Clark, of Carbon Leaf… Produced by 678Main Studio and Creative Services https://678main.com

We wanna hear from you! Send us a message here :) When country music lovers talk about the greatest groups in the genre, Shenandoah is always at the forefront of any discussion. Fueled by Marty Raybon's distinctive vocals and the band's skilled musicianship, Shenandoah became well known for delivering such hits as “Two Dozen Roses”, “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Next to You, Next to Me” as well as such achingly beautiful classics as “I Want to be Loved Like That” and the Grammy winning “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” duet with Alison Krauss. Today that legacy continues as original members Raybon and Mike McGuire reunite to launch a new chapter in Shenandoah's storied career. It all began when the guys got back together to perform a benefit concert for a friend battling cancer. “We saw how folks reacted,” Raybon says of the response to their reunion. “And then Jerry Phillips, son of legendary Sun Records producer Sam Phillips, said ‘You guys need to make a run at this. People still love what you do. You can tell by the reaction. There's a lot of excitement in the air.'”The Oak Ridge Boys have sold over 41 million units worldwide and are synonymouswith “America, apple pie, baseball, and country music.” In addition to their awards and accolades in the country music field, the Oaks have garnered five GRAMMY® Awards, nine GMA DOVE Awards, and two American Music Awards. The group—Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban—was inducted into the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame (2015 Inductees) and the Grand Ole Opry (since 2011)—and is known worldwide as one of recording history's most extraordinary musical successes. Det är januari 1998 och just i år är intresset för den annars lite sömniga kategorin årets latin extra stort.– Now you think after 25 years, the American Music Awards would have seen it all. But something really unusual happened in this category.– For the first time ever a father and son, Julio and Enrique, are competing for the same award.22-åriga Enrique är märkbart nervös, där han sitter och svettas bredvid sin mamma i en av de röda bänkraderna. – It's really a tight race. So let's take a look at the three favorite artist for latin artist.Huruvida pappa Julio, vars smokingklädda ryggtavla tornar upp sig några rader längre fram, är lika nervös är svårt att avgöra. Men faktum är att far och son inte pratat med varandra på över ett år.– And the winner is Julio Iglesias!Med ett vant leende kliver den legendariske smörsångaren fram till mikrofonen.– Well, this is funny because, you know when they tell you that your son is against you in competition, you feel a little like, eh, your brain is in another place, because I adore my kids. Kamerateamet missar inte chansen att zooma in på Enrique som sitter och gapar i sin stol. Avgudad är det sista han känt sig av sin framgångsrike far. – And more than anything, to tell my son, and my new sons, that as much I will be on a stage, as much I will compete with them. Thank you so much.Medverkande: Anders Bagge och Margret AtladottirProgrammet är gjort av Joanna Korbutiak i december 2024Producent Robin JonssonExekutiv producent Lars TruedsonSlutmix Fredrik NilssonProgramledare Siri HillP3 Musikdokumentär produceras av Tredje Statsmakten MediaLjudklippen i programmet kommer från VH1 Behind the Music (VH1, 2011), Sábado Gigante (Televisa Univision, 1995), American Music Awards (1998), Eurovision Song Contest (1970), RTVE (1982), La movida del verano (Telefe, 1996), ZTV (1999), The Howard Stern Show (WRX, 2000), CNN (2001), Making The Video (MTV, 2001), Al Rojo Vivo (Telemundo, 2014) och youtubekontot Nathan Fernandez.

It's 2025, and somehow, We Are The World is about to turn 40 years old. Time is a cruel joke. This week and next we'll be taking a deep dive into one of the biggest charity singles ever recorded. You know the one—Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan looking completely lost, and a very questionable Cyndi Lauper fashion choice. We cover: How this song was written in 10 days and recorded in one night (because the American Music Awards made it convenient). The absolute chaos of the recording session, including Lionel Richie trying to stay awake, Prince ghosting everyone, and Stevie Wonder insisting on singing in Swahili. Michael Jackson's home studio, which included a chimpanzee, a Mynah bird that mimicked his voice, and a giant snake that terrified Lionel Richie. Why some artists hated the song, including Cyndi Lauper comparing it to a Pepsi commercial and Billy Joel thinking nobody actually liked it. What happened to the money, how We Are The World avoided Band Aid's mistakes, and why Live Aid overshadowed it in the end. We also attempt to answer some crucial questions:Would a song like this even work today? Why does Quincy Jones always have the best stories?Has Bob Dylan ever looked more uncomfortable? Timestamps & Highlights 00:00 – Intro & Banter: Vikings, language learning, and Michael Christen (who?).02:00 – Patreon Plug: Give us money, or at least send the pod to a mortal enemy.06:47 – How "We Are The World" Came Together: The American Music Awards gave them a deadline, and chaos followed.16:54 – Artists Who Hated It (or Rejected It): Prince, Madonna, and Billy Joel's existential crisis.27:20 – Michael Jackson's Bizarre Recording Habits: A chimp, a bird, and a snake walk into a studio…36:00 – The Chaotic Recording Session: Bob Dylan, Huey Lewis, and why Quincy Jones had to babysit 40 superstars.47:00 – Stevie Wonder's Swahili Suggestion: This actually happened.54:00 – What Happened to the Money?: How We Are The World handled charity better than Band Aid.1:06:30 – Live Aid & The Aftermath: How this song shaped charity singles forever.1:18:00 – Final Thoughts & Outro: The legacy of We Are The World, and who we'd put on a modern version. Join the Conversation! Which solo line would you claim if you were forced to sing on We Are The World? Should Bob Dylan have just walked out? Would a charity single like this even work in 2024? There comes a time when the call must be heeded to revisit one of the most significant moments in Gen X pop culture history: the star-studded 'check your ego at the door' collective recording known as "We Are The World," which took place following the American Music Awards on the evening of January 28, 1985. (A quick tip of the cap to the captivating Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop, which reignited a desire to revisit this historical event). On this episode of the pod, guest contributor and fellow Gen Xer Phil Singh joins Rick to watch and comment in real-time on the 7-minute video for "We Are The World," rehashing tidbits learned about the night from the Netflix doc as well as from dozens of other interviews and videos about the inspiration behind, gathering and recording of, and video for the song that followed on the heels of the U.K.'s own star-studded "Do They Know It's Christmas" charity single. Part fashion police, part amateur music critics, Rick and Phil inject perspective, thoughts, and humor into what they see unfold in the "We Are The World" video, from the outfits to the vocal pairings to who brought their A-game and cared about the effort to who came off as less than stellar. They also discuss how the song has aged and how it stands up today. The magnitude of "We Are The World" for us Gen X'ers cannot be overstated. The star power of the artists in the room, many of whom were still climbing to the peak of their icon status, and the realization that putting together something like this for one night only and making the impact it made could never quite be duplicated made this retrospective a must to revisit through a new lens 40 years later.

One of this year's biggest box office successes is Disney's "Moana 2", which reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced. The film features a stunning score by Grammy-winning composer Mark Mancina. Known for his work on the original Moana as well as The Lion King, Speed, and Tarzan, Mancina's dynamic, emotional compositions are at the heart of the film's sweeping musical landscape. Moana 2 marks Mancina's return to the world of Oceania, alongside Grammy Award-winning songwriters Barlow & Bear, and Billboard Music Award- and American Music Award-winning songwriter and composer Opetaia Foa‘i, who also returned for the sequel. Recently, I got to speak with Mark about his work on "Moana 2", where he revealed some of the challenges working on the score and the impact of the project being flipped from a Disney+ Original series to a theatrical release.

Just before Christmas 1984, Harry Belafonte wanted US artists (and especially black artists) to create a charity album to benefit starving people in Africa as the Do They Know It's Christmas single by the days most popular UK bands was a huge success. He teamed up with manager to the stars Ken Kragen to put together the team that would write and record the lead single. Immediately, Ken enlisted his client, Lionel Richie, to write the song. Lionel and Ken knew they'd need all-star producer Quincy Jones to put it all together. Quincy thought it would be a good idea to get the biggest pop star in the world, Michael Jackson, involved and things snowballed from there as Ken brought on legends like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and artists that were popular at the time like Billy Joel, Kim Carnes, Cindy Lauper, Huey Lewis and more. But how would they get all that talent in one room at one time? Ken devised the idea that so many would be in LA for the American Music Awards on January 28, 1985 so that would be the ideal time. But that was 5 weeks away!!! So Ken went about finding the venue and Lionel and Michael worked on the song. It was all kept very hush hush and even the artists didn't know where they were going after the AMAs until they were on the way. And to make the night even more stressful for Lionel, he was hosting the AMAs and was performing twice (not to mention collecting 6 awards that night). The documentary was a fascinating glimpse into one special night where all egos were put aside in order to record a special song for a worthy cause. It is a little surprising that we have gotten this far into the podcast without featuring an album by Mötley Crüe. This is a group that practically defined the hair metal genre of the mid to late-80's. The band formed in 1981 in Hollywood, and featured both a party-oriented lifestyle and an androgynous look. The core and classic members of the band were Nikki Sixx on bass and keyboards, Mick Mars on lead guitar and backing vocals, Tommy Lee on drums and backing vocals, and Vince Neil as front man. Many other musicians would be brought in for sessions, and the group itself would change personnel over the years. However, the classic lineup was still in place for their fifth studio album, Dr. Feelgood. At the time, the group was facing conflicts that caused Producer Bob Rock to have each member record their parts separately. This was also the first album recorded after the group started a quest to get sober and go through rehab. Additionally, recording took place in Vancouver, getting the band out of the familiar (and seductive) L.A. scene. The result of these sessions was impressive. Dr. Feelgood was the groups most successful album to date, and went to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, the only Crüe album to do so. It was also reviewed positively by critics, receiving the award for "Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album of the Year" at the American Music Awards in 1991.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Bruce and brings us this excellent glam metal album of the late 80's for this week's podcast.Dr. FeelgoodThis title track peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Mötley Crüe's most successful single to date. The song about a drug dealer chronicles the connection between LA Rock and drug use. It has an infectious funky riff and a more sophisticated production which departs from earlier Mötley Crüe efforts.Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)The softer approach of this power ballad song are betrayed by its adolescent lyrics. Bassist Nikki Sixx was inspired by a movie line to make this sarcastic song. It's tongue in cheek lyrics and reference to earlier Crüe songs make it a favorite at their live shows. like fire, don't you ever take my name in vain."Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)This fifth single released from the album tells a comedic story of a boy meeting two girls, and by the end of the song the boy has been passed over while the two girls end up together. Many of Mötley Crüe's songs had lighter, humorous lyrics, which contributed to their appeal.Kickstart My HeartDo not play this song when driving through a speed trap! The song is not about a relationship, but about Nikki Sixx's heroin overdose. Sixx was clinically dead, requiring the paramedic to inject adrenaline into his heart to get it beating again. This single reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Welcome Home by Willie Nelson (from the motion picture “Welcome Home”)This film starred Kris Kristofferson as a Vietnam War vet returning to his family after a 20-year absence. STAFF PICKS:New Orleans Is Sinking by the Tragically HipWayne turns to the college rock genre to start off our staff picks. The Tragically Hip is better known in their native Canada than in the US, but their music is well worth a listen. This song was recorded in Memphis, and has a delta blues feel, almost rockabilly. The song was temporarily removed from radio playlists after hurricane Katrina broke the levies and flooded New Orleans. Wait for You by BonhamIf you think that this song sounds like Led Zeppelin, you aren't the only one. Rob features Jason Bonham's band. Jason Bonham was the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Jason Bonham has a playing style very similar to his father, and recruited Daniel McMaster to the band on vocals - a singer with a sound very similar to Zeppelin front man Robert Palmer. This is the main single from the debut album, "The Disregard of Timekeeping." Poison by Alice CooperLynch brings us a song from Cooper's eighteenth album, "Trash." This song was a major comeback single for Cooper, his first top 10 single in the US in 12 years. The song tells the story of a guy entrapped by a girl that he knows is wrong for him, but also someone he can't let go.Down Boys by Warrant Greg finishes the staff picks with another hair metal band. This is the debut single from Warrant's debut album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich." It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Stand On It by Jeff Beck with Terry Bozzio and Tony HymasWe close out with a guitar instrumental from guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck, accompanied by drummer Terry Bozzio and keyboardist Tony Hymas.
