Concert will benefit Beacon exchange program Ten years ago, singer and actor Kelly Ellenwood lost her voice after contracting whooping cough, an ironic twist because for four years she played the part of an opera prima donna who began singing like a frog in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. To help regain the vocalizing, in 2016 she joined Stephen Clair (guitar) and Kathleen Bosman (violin, viola) to perform songs by German American composer Kurt Weill and French chanteuse Edith Piaf. On June 22, at 6 p.m., the Saint Rita trio (supported by Nate Allen and Brad Hubbard) will perform a program called Lost & Found at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon featuring deep cuts and popular songs from the pair's repertoire. The show is a benefit for Beacon High School's German American Partnership Program, established in 2022 with support from the German founders of the Beacon-based software firm Docuware. It brings foreign students to Beacon in October. On June 28, to complete the annual exchange, 18 Beacon teens and two teachers leave for Munich. Ellenwood, known for getting things done around town, got the call and implemented the nuts and bolts with the Parent Teacher Student Organization. This year, with help from the U.S. State Department and the Goethe Institute in Manhattan, the school district took over responsibility for its administration. Growing up in Nebraska, Ellenwood studied in Finland as an exchange student and aimed to be a diplomat, but the arts beckoned. There is no German language program at Beacon High School, she says, but "last year, a bunch of students, led by Skylar Clair, started a German study group and some of the kids are going this year, so this is changing lives." Rita, "patron saint of the impossible," says Ellenwood, is also the name of a new 100-seat music venue at the KuBe Art Center that she and her family plan to open with trombonist Dick Griffin on July 19 in the former high school's band room. Relevant to the concert, Piaf is said to have asked friends "to pray for Saint Rita, patron saint of lost causes" before her death from liver cancer in 1963 at age 47. The June 22 show will include Piaf's most popular song, "La Vie En Rose," which sold 1 million discs in the U.S. when released as a single in 1947. After Mack David translated the lyrics into English in 1950, eight artists charted with it, including Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong. Weill fused pop and classical music and collaborated with Ogden Nash, Bertolt Brecht and Ira Gershwin, among others. His hits include "Mack the Knife," "Bilbao Song" and "Alabama Song" (covered as "Whisky Bar" on the first album by The Doors). "We do a down-and-dirty version" of the latter, says Ellenwood, which is saying something because the song is about "prostitutes looking for the next trick - sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll - in 1930." The Howland Cultural Center is located at 477 Main St. in Beacon. Tickets are $20 at dub.sh/saint-rita-show.
San Francisco's Elixir dates its history back to 1858, when it opened in the city's Mission District along a plank road at the corner of what is now 16th and Guerrero. The bar still has its Gold Rush-era look and feel, thanks to careful restoration work led by owner H. Joseph Ehrmann. We'll talk with head bartender Nick Madden and general manager Shea Shawnson on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, English Whisky is a step closer to getting its own geographical indicator status, though not without some objections. Campari is considering layoffs because of declining Cognac sales, and Suntory Holdings is reporting a slight gain in 2024 sales. We'll have the details, along with the week's tasting notes and much more.

Gavin welcomes Yili Ferati to his show and the two discuss Yili's passion project with whiskey. Yili reveals that he has been bartending for 15 years and got thrown into the role when one of their bartenders had to be let go. He then explains how he found his passion in whiskey and has since become Alaska's number one whiskey bar, with recognition from the Bourbon Reviewer's Top 100 and Whiskey Advocate. He credits his success to his father's philosophy and the bar's name is Fiori di Italia. Fifteen years ago, whiskey was limited to the usual suspects and there was not much action in the whiskey scene. This conversation discusses the whiskey-drinking culture in the early 2000s. They mention that Jack Daniels and Jim Beam were the most popular whiskeys and that Makers Mark was a more expensive option. They talk about single malt scotches being popular, such as Glenlevitt, Glenmorangie, and Balvenny McAllen. They then discuss whiskey cocktails and how rye was the most popular with bartenders early on. They mention that McAllen was not as popular 15 years ago as it is today, with only 12-15 stills. Finally, they mention that most people were drinking whiskey on the rocks, rather than neat. The conversation discusses the evolution of cocktails from 20 years ago to the present day. The speaker and the listener both recall a time when there were only 4 standard cocktails, and the speaker remembers when mojitos came on the market and it was a pain to make. Now the speaker makes at least 100 Old Fashioneds every night and attributes the popularity of this classic cocktail to the show Mad Men. The listener mentions the large cubes of ice and maraschino cherries that are now popular and the speaker comments that they make their own housemade cherries instead. They then discuss the increase in the price of cocktails, as people now want more expensive spirits such as Wilderness Trail Rye or Rabbit Hole Rye. The conversation concludes with the listener noting that money is no longer an issue and people will pay whatever for their spirits.

Hello Friends! Today we're making the trip to January 1967, with the debut LP from LA's most renound, The Doors! Classically self titled, 'The Doors' combined the evolving rock, psych, blues, and r'n'b movement at the time, to create a raw yet timeless effort, often heralded as the group's best. As always, the album received mono and stereo mixes upon release, and while there aren't that many explicit differences, the overall sound of the mix is vastly different, with the stereo having the clarity, but the mono having the crunch and the punch. Which is better? Let's take a trip to the Whisky Bar at The End of The Night, and find out... This episode of Week in Review was broadcast live from the Heritage Radio Network Teepee at Charleston Wine + Food 2016 in Charleston, SC. Erin and Jack review a small fraction of their favorite bites from Charleston thus far, and are joined by Chef Robert Newton of Nightingale 9, Kerry Diamond of Radio Cherry Bombe, and HRN’s own Allison Hamlin.
Episode 97 saw us joined by Sola Obayan of SMAMi.org to talk Social Media Day Detroit, Matt Roush to talk about the Engineering Society of Detroit and his own Tech Century tech blog, and Mike Brennan to talk about the latest goings on with MITechNews, and a whole lot more. From cyber-bullying to social media best practices, this episode was a ton of fun... As always, things kicked off with our take on the news, stories and events that caught our eye over the past week. We also took care of some of our own business as we chatted about our event last week at Blackfinn in Royal Oak and our event next week at the Whisky Bar downtown. Then we dove in to talk about Pixar's latest film "Inside Out" and our conflicting takes on it, the suck that is QR codes and the harsh lesson that Heinz learned about using them in conjunction with domains that you forget to renew and get snatched up by people who don't exactly have your company's best interests at heart, AT&T getting slapped with an enormous fine over bandwidth throttling, a fake Facebook post that led to hundreds of people gathering at a church in Flint thinking they were there to find out about jobs at GM...but no such luck...and even more. We came back with segment two to talk with Matt Roush and Mike Brennan, two guys with a lot of history as journalists here in the area and elsewhere. Mike runs MITechNews.com, our content partner behind the "News" tab up above and the "breaking news" widget in the right rail. Matt's the Director of Communications and Public Relations for the Engineering Society of Detroit, but we've known him since his days of working at Crain's and then from the Great Lakes IT Report (GLITR) that showed up in our inbox for the longest time with news and information we paid attention to. They've got some great perspectives on things here in the area, including the new Maker-based economy, 3d printing, tech in general and tons more. It was great having them in, and we're looking forward to helping them launch their own show in the near future. For segment three, we dove in with Sola Obayan from SMAMi.org, the Social Media Association of Michigan, to talk about this Friday's Social Media Day Detroit event. There's a VIP reception. There are some great speakers. There will be a ton of people in attendance that you want to meet and chat with. Best of all, the main session from 7-10 is completely free of charge, and it's the one place in the planet where having a conversation while staring at your phone is not only tolerated, but expected. Tickets are still available for the VIP reception portion of the evening as well...and rumor has it we'll be doing a live broadcast from the event with whatever guests we can collar as they walk by, so we're looking forward to seeing you there. [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/211656359" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] Our fourth segment doubled back on a topic that we started getting into during our third segment but wanted to break to give it enough time for an actual talk about it - cyber bullying. What it means in the world today, and why it's different than when those of us around the table were growing up. Then a little sappy sentimentality since it was Bob's anniversary, and his wife actually sat in with us for the night to hang and have some fun. That brought our latest broadcast to a close, and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Oh, and Matt hung out all night just so he could get put on the spot and drop a one-liner... Whisky lovers travel to Atlantic City from all over the U.S. for the monthly Second Saturday Single Malt Tastings at the Miner's Delight Inn. Bob and Barbara Townsend started the monthly tastings after they bought the inn in 2006, and their "Two-Bit Cowboy Saloon" has 86 different whiskies behind the hand-crafted bar. They're used to a bit of confusion, though. This Atlantic City is in Wyoming, not New Jersey.
Seven Grand helped revive downtown nightlife in Los Angeles, and with nearly 400 whiskies behind the bar and a top-notch education program, it's become one of the must-visit places for whisky lovers from all over Southern California and beyond.
