Fianna Fáil MEP for Ireland South Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has got updated regional crime figures from the CSO. Whilst recorded shoplifting offences did drop by 10.7% between 2023 and 2024 in Kerry, the trend over the past 20 years has been upwards with a 108% in the number of recorded incidents of shoplifting in the Kerry Garda Division between the years 2003 and 2024, going from 340 in 2003 up to 707 in 2024. 2023 and 2024 are the years with the highest recorded incidents of shoplifting in Kerry since 2003. Kerry had 707 incidents of shoplifting recorded by the CSO in 2024 but Donegal, by comparisons, had 384 incidents of shoplifting recorded in 2024.

The Dáil had to be suspended yesterday as the row over speaking rights to independent TDs, who support the government but want designated time to question the coalition, rages on. Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae is one of the independents who now qualify for this speaking time as it was passed in the Dáil yesterday. 0pposition parties say it’s wrong to allocate opposition speaking time to TDs who support the government. The new speaking time allocation will also allow backbench Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael deputies question the government. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said this was stroke politics and would not allow the government to be held to account. The Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the opposition was completely disproportionate in their response over what he said was an additional eight minutes of speaking time on two days in the Dail. The image that went viral from yesterday’s chaos was Tipperary North TD Michael Lowry of the Rural Independent Group – who was at the heart of the deal that independents made with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael - giving a two-finger gesture to Paul Murphy of People Before Profit. In Psalm 3, we see how David responded when he fled from his son Absalom. David called out to the Lord and the Lord answered him and sustained him. The Lord wasn't going to let David fall flat on his face. The Lord met David and He lifted his head high. Our performance isn't what the Lord looks at. His perfect love covers us and we can be people who help lift others up when they are going through a tough time.

2 Samuel 15 describes how David is being kicked out of Jerusalem. In the midst of the embarrassment and sadness from leaving his kingship, David goes to the Lord and he is greatly encouraged by Him. Psalm 3 details how the Lord is David's shield and it is the Lord who lifts his head high. The Lord sees our pain and our tears and we can be encouraged in the Lord just like David was. The Lord will lift our heads up when we face challenging times and we can let the Lord turn our friction into traction.

In little over a week, Neil Russell is set to start an awe-inspiring 970-mile run from London to Barcelona, aiming to complete his journey in just over five weeks. What makes Neil's challenge even more notable is that the 65-year-old will be doing it despite having been diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2018. In fact, Neil's final destination is the World Parkinson's Congress, and along the way he is hoping to raise £50,000 for Cure Parkinson's and Parkinson's UK. It's not the first time he has taken on an incredible challenge to raise money for the two charities, having made £11,000 while running from John O'Groats to Land's End last year.
