Concert will benefit Beacon exchange program Ten years ago, singer and actor Kelly Ellenwood lost her voice after contracting whooping cough, an ironic twist because for four years she played the part of an opera prima donna who began singing like a frog in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. To help regain the vocalizing, in 2016 she joined Stephen Clair (guitar) and Kathleen Bosman (violin, viola) to perform songs by German American composer Kurt Weill and French chanteuse Edith Piaf. On June 22, at 6 p.m., the Saint Rita trio (supported by Nate Allen and Brad Hubbard) will perform a program called Lost & Found at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon featuring deep cuts and popular songs from the pair's repertoire. The show is a benefit for Beacon High School's German American Partnership Program, established in 2022 with support from the German founders of the Beacon-based software firm Docuware. It brings foreign students to Beacon in October. On June 28, to complete the annual exchange, 18 Beacon teens and two teachers leave for Munich. Ellenwood, known for getting things done around town, got the call and implemented the nuts and bolts with the Parent Teacher Student Organization. This year, with help from the U.S. State Department and the Goethe Institute in Manhattan, the school district took over responsibility for its administration. Growing up in Nebraska, Ellenwood studied in Finland as an exchange student and aimed to be a diplomat, but the arts beckoned. There is no German language program at Beacon High School, she says, but "last year, a bunch of students, led by Skylar Clair, started a German study group and some of the kids are going this year, so this is changing lives." Rita, "patron saint of the impossible," says Ellenwood, is also the name of a new 100-seat music venue at the KuBe Art Center that she and her family plan to open with trombonist Dick Griffin on July 19 in the former high school's band room. Relevant to the concert, Piaf is said to have asked friends "to pray for Saint Rita, patron saint of lost causes" before her death from liver cancer in 1963 at age 47. The June 22 show will include Piaf's most popular song, "La Vie En Rose," which sold 1 million discs in the U.S. when released as a single in 1947. After Mack David translated the lyrics into English in 1950, eight artists charted with it, including Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong. Weill fused pop and classical music and collaborated with Ogden Nash, Bertolt Brecht and Ira Gershwin, among others. His hits include "Mack the Knife," "Bilbao Song" and "Alabama Song" (covered as "Whisky Bar" on the first album by The Doors). "We do a down-and-dirty version" of the latter, says Ellenwood, which is saying something because the song is about "prostitutes looking for the next trick - sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll - in 1930." The Howland Cultural Center is located at 477 Main St. in Beacon. Tickets are $20 at dub.sh/saint-rita-show.
August Eriksmoen is an orchestrator and album producer of Broadway musicals and cast recordings, including a credit with Water for Elephants, now playing at the Imperial Theatre. The Beacon resident, who has been nominated for a Tony and a Grammy and won a Laurence Olivier Award from the Society of London Theatre for Come from Away, works with high-end equipment and expansive ensembles. Yet the main photo on his website shows him holding a mandolin, a shot taken during a performance by Bees in the Barn, his modern string band that is rooted in country music. "It's my favorite thing to do," he says. "I compose songs for film and TV and aspire to write for theater, but this format gives me a lot of space." When commissioned, Eriksmoen receives a piano sketch, the vocal parts and the number of instruments to write for (usually eight to 18 for Broadway shows and 25 to 100 for TV and film). "The band size is often dictated by the budget," he says. "I have no control over what the configuration of musicians will be." After devising parts in his head, he inputs them to notation software. Whenever possible, he knocks out a song per day and plays back the scores to see if he missed a flat here or a sharp there. Then, he attends early rehearsals to work with the composer and fine-tune. "I'm there to help the musicians with the interpretation and get instant feedback from the composer," he says. "We tweak the orchestration on the stands, right there." His film and TV work includes ABC's Once Upon a Time, the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building and the Disney film Descendants. Broadway credits include Prince of Egypt and Million Dollar Quartet. The Tony nomination recognized his score for the Steve Martin and Edie Brickell musical Bright Star, which is rooted in bluegrass. Bees in the Barn - consisting of Eriksmoen on mandolin, Sara Milonovich on fiddle, guitarist Jordan Shapiro and upright bass player Nate Allen - specializes in songs and instrumentals loosely based on 18th-century fiddle tunes that veer into experimental territory. The group releases its songs online and plays occasional gigs, like a recent show in Poughkeepsie sponsored by the Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association. Eriksmoen served as master of ceremonies. The sophisticated arrangements of his original songs can present musical minefields when played live. Jagged, percussive passages requiring pinpoint timing melt into fluid melodic moments. In some tunes, the rhythm lopes along and then the dynamic turns on a dime as the tempo begins racing and feet start tapping. Unlike nearly every country-rooted string band across the land, Eriksmoen notates the music and reads it off an iPad during performances. At the gig, he cued the other musicians to impending changes, which they hit with the precision of a Swiss watch. The compact compositions blend in elements of Tin Pan Alley ("Malted Waltz"), classical ("Waterbug," "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot") and gypsy jazz ("Fermata," "Memorial" and "Moose on the Loose"). Parts of "Fermata" evoke something Frank Zappa might have composed for a four-piece string band. The thrill ride "Eclipse" starts with a chugging vamp. After the fiddle plays a squiggly melody line, intricate shifting parts fray into strands that eventually interlock. Out of nowhere, a bluegrass-style guitar solo breaks out. Eriksmoen grew up in southern California and his father often played country. "I heard a lot of Chet Atkins," he recalls. His wife, Jessica Welch, a native of Arkansas, will perform Patsy Cline songs on Bannerman Island in July. After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Eriksmoen moved to Manhattan, then relocated to Beacon in 2011 after visiting friends. The Bees began to buzz six years later. He took up the mandolin in part, he says, because it's tuned like a violin and helps with his string arranging. "I get a better sense of the violinist's left hand, what intervals work and how I can move around note-wise," he says. During the Pough...

Imagine an election where the candidate with the highest approval rating wins. No games, no spoilers, no more feeling forced to choose the lesser of two evils. We can make that happen. Nate Allen – Executive Director Nate earned his associate's degree from Weber State University and transferred to earn his BS from The University of Utah. Nate founded Utah Approves in 2020 after witnessing how the election process wouldn't allow many to vote for their favorite, and instead feel restricted to choosing the lesser of two evils. Founded in 2020, Utah Approves is a nonpartisan nonprofit working to reform our elections to produce a government that represents you again. We believe this country has a powerful foundation in the constitution and the powers and freedoms it gives to the people. Unfortunately, we are witnessing a time of increasing polarization and a government that doesn't listen to us. But it's not too late, especially if we band together under a common cause. We are all fed up with corruption and feeling like our voice and vote don't matter anymore and we're ready to change that. https://utahapproves.org/ https://utahapproves.org/get-involved/ https://www.instagram.com/UtahApproves/ https://twitter.com/UtahApproves We Are Utah Podcast highlights all of the rich experiences in the great state of Utah. Nate Allen grew up in a Christian home and said the sinner’s prayer when he was five years old. He went to Bible college and worked as a youth pastor. But Nate did not personally know Jesus… until he met Him in a bar. Nate had drifted from God after his son was born stillborn, his marriage broke up, and he began living a party lifestyle. And when Nate hit rock bottom, Jesus was right there to show him a different way. After discovering the intimacy with Christ, Nate has been transformed and is now living out his greater purpose: to follow Christ and pursuing his long-lost dream. He shares his encouraging story on this episode of Limitless Spirit. 3:08 – Nate’s church background and “accidental” salvation story 7:30 – His life is torn between desire to please his family and desire to taste sin 10:30 – Nate tries to fill the void in his life with material things 12:50 – While having a beer at a bar Nate is asked a question “do you know who Jesus is?” 15:10 – Nate witnesses to a town drunk but realizes he lacks the intimate knowledge of who Christ is 17:57 – Nate’s life begins to change, and his long-lost dream is revived 22:24 – God performs a healing miracle through Nate’s prayer 24:45 – What is Nate’s greater purpose in life? And how has he changed now that he’s truly a child of God?Support the show (https://rfwma.org/give)
For as long as Eric Davis can remember, the name of that distinct carpenter from the bible (“that J name”) has caused him to have severe panic attacks. Living on a religion free road with his wife, Brooke, and his two children, Fiona and Mitchell, avoidance has done the trick. But things change, as they tend to do. On the day his wife comes home from church (wait, church?) to deliver her life changing news, Eric is given a peek behind the curtain for his aversion. Dark stairs leading down into a far darker place, long shadows reaching up the walls, reaching for him. In a last effort to save his marriage and his sanity, he seeks answers to his aversion. The more he discovers about the why, the more he wishes he could close the curtain for good. But he’s already gone too far. To stop now would leave him worse off than before. What waits at the end of his journey is darkness unimaginable and a past that was better buried in the deepest parts of his mind. Finally after a months long wait, a NEW episode of the Fins Broadcast is here! On the Week 3 Edition, we discussed just about everything that has happened since the last time we linked up for a show. We discussed the coaches, the void left by the loss of Ryan Tannehill, and how we think Jay Cutler measures up after two weeks of play. We discussed the many troubles of the secondary, including a new nickname for Nate Allen, questions about the not-quite himself Reshad Jones, and the letdown of Xavien Howard 's play. Byron Maxwell is also in the doghouse, along with just about everyone involved from Sunday. Join us as we try to make sense of the whole thing! We're also happy to report that you can look forward to another show next week following our (hopefully triumphant) trip to London to play the Saints. So stay tuned, and keep the faith! The season isn't even CLOSE to over yet.

July 2015 while my wife and kids were visiting family in Florida I stayed home to finish off work projects. Mike takes Skype calls from friends and fans and talks to Jason Call from Daphne Loves Derby about how they got 5 million downloads. MHH 150 How an unsigned band got 5 Million downloads while the music business was breaking and more stories from you, my friends and listeners. My main guest is Jason Call of the band Daphne Loves Derby and now Mariner. We talk about his band's space rocket to success by gaining more than 5 million downloads for just 1 song through sites like PureVolume and MySpace and how that led to a record deal, world tours. How did it happen? How did they do it? Did they hack the system or were they just the first to do it? Special Note: This episode I'm taking your calls on skype. It was a very last minute decision to do a podcast solely based on who I could talk to via skype at that very second. Thanks to Louis DeFabrizio, Nate Allen, Thiago Messias for the chat and everyone else that I didn't get to actually talk to on the podcast. I'll do this again and it will continue to improve. It's been said there are only two constants in this life and they are death and taxes. I found that to be a perfect title for this weeks chapter considering the two main topics. Death: I hate to start off with a sad solomn note but I had to tip my hat to the late David Bowie. You will be missed, Starman. I wanted you all to hear Iggy Pop talk about him from 1990 and the famous clip from 1983 when Bowie calls out MTV for not playing black artists. We wrap up with Jimmy Fallon mentioning Bowie and we have a small moment of silence before moving on. Taxes: Ok. More bad news. Taxes are due in about three months. NEVER FEAR! Onward to Tessa Allen of Destroy Nate Allen. We talk about how her and her husband met and started a punk rock revolution one unamplified show at a time. Tessa happens to be wicked smart at taxes and I thought a discussion on how a current DIY musician could learn a few things might be a good idea. Now that avenues such as Patreon and Kickstarter exist, folks need to learn how to deal. Who better than a folk punk rocker? Nate Allen, Knoxville's Deputy Chief of Police, was invited to discuss 400 Things Cops Know: Street-Smart Lessons from a Veteran Patrolman by Adam Plantinga. Allen remarked "This book is a great way to build understanding and transparency between the community and police officers. It is extremely important for the community to know and understand the laws provided for police officers to perform their job in a safe and responsible manner." He responded to many questions from the audience, but the recording captured only his remarks. This recording is edited from his answers to those questions.

Jamie Holmes is a self-made man. Jamie has been a cornerstone in the punk and indie Lehigh Valley PA scene as the owner of Double Decker Records. Double Decker started back in 96 and still going strong. Listen to how Jamie had do duck and weave his way to remain relevant for almost twenty years. There is so much to know, but it remains the same as every other story: the most important tool is flexibility. Jamie knows what he's doing. Then we are joined by his associates Ray Gurz and Chris Bickert. Ray is the leader of the band Tile as well as another called Bad American. (I shoved a Tile song in here for you somewhere...) Chris is not only the nicest guy ever, he's also Braid's tour manager (Don't believe me? Bob Nanna himself said so in Chapter 12.) Plus he brought donuts. These are the people in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...but they're in your neighborhood now, too thanks to the magic of podcasting. Enjoy. (No donuts though...) One more thing: Nate Allen, friend of the show, has a lil' rekkid coming out with his group Nate Allen And The Pac Away Dots. The album is called "Take Out The Trash" and it is available for pre-order right now. It's coming out on Sept 18th. Tell your friends. Nate's a good egg. Buy his album...link is below. We were honored to be joined by Nate Allen this episode. Unique doesn't begin to describe his approach to music. His kickstarter campaign for "Nate Allen and the Pac-Away Dots" includes a video game, laser-etched mason jars, greeting cards....you gotta hear this. His music is inspired by not listening to much music, just an occasional cassette in the van. It is inspiring to hear that influences can come from silence and your own thoughts and not mimicry. His shows have no PA system and the crowds gather around he and his wife Tessa in a sort of circle gathering rather than a stage for a unique acoustic folk-punk experiance. He tells us all about it and hopefully inspires you to think a little outside the box. He recalls a cool Melvins / Big Business story. We talk a lil' Kansas City sports. He was a booking agent for Emery and As I Lay Dying. This one was fun.
