In this episode of Scottish Clans, we delve into Clan MacLellan, a powerhouse of medieval Galloway whose story is one of meteoric rise, bloody feuds, and tragic decline through unyielding loyalty. Emerging in the late 13th century as devotees of St. Fillan (their name from Gaelic MacGilleFhaolain), the MacLellans swiftly claimed lands around Balmaclellan, Raeberry, and Bombie in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. Scholar Graeme M. Mackenzie proposes an intriguing shared origin with Clan MacMillan, tracing both to 12th-century Bishop Cormac mac Airbertach – a theory bolstered by adjacent settlements in the Glenkens and early heraldic similarities. From Balliol supporters in the Wars of Independence to staunch royalists against the Black Douglases, the MacLellans earned a fearsome reputation as one of Galloway's toughest clans.Links:Scottish Clans Website Contribute to the CauseGet your Clandana and Battle ShirtsFor Speaking Engagements, email me at thescottishclans@gmail.com.Origins of the MacLellans by Graeme Mackenzie

When Scott MacLellan's daughter was diagnosed with a rare health condition, he knew her childhood would be a fight. Enduring hundreds of surgeries wasn't the worst of it. What started as a prescription for opioid painkillers eventually became an addiction, pushing Scott's family to the brink. For over a decade, he fought for his daughter's future—until a desperate prayer, and a chance encounter, changed everything. On the other side of addiction, Scott and his family are now addiction advocates, helping to pioneer new treatment, and hope, for families walking through similar circumstances. No matter the fight you are facing, Scott's story can be the shot of inspiration you need to keep going. Whisky and storytelling go hand in hand and very often you associate a special dram with a moment, person, place or situation.Peter MacLellan Jnr., who together with his family owns and runs Bowmore Hotel on Islay knows a thing or two about special drams and storytelling: Lucci's Whisky Bar inside the hotel has become synonymous with the place itself and stocks an incredible and enormous selection of Islay whiskies. If there's one Islay unicorn dram you have always wanted to try, there's a good chance you will find it there – along with nice company and some stories from times gone by.And to be honest, Bowmore Hotel itself is the place of many stories on its own, and we also still remember the first time we set foot into Lucci's Whisky Bar during our very first visit to Islay. So quite naturally, a podcast with Peter had to happen at some point of our whisky journey. So, pour your favourite dram, lean back, relax and enjoy some whisky and storytelling with Miri, Martin and Peter MacLellan Jnr. of Bowmore Hotel.

"My greatest lesson in my entire life was that I'm not in control." Wise words from our wonderful guest today, Scott MacLellan. Do you ever feel the pressure to try and be your kids' savior? Like you're responsible for all of their choices, no matter how good or bad they might be? Scott learned the hard way that there's only one person that can fill that role, and it's not you and me. It's only Jesus. Today, Scott shows us what it means to let go of the reins and hand them over to Christ, without being passive or ditching your responsibility to lead your family. Scott MacLellan has been a CEO for the last 25 years, leading multi-billion-dollar businesses and tens of thousands of employees. He's written nine books, is the executive producer of an upcoming streaming series in development and has even worked as a celebrity bodyguard. His greatest story is tied to being a follower of Jesus Christ, married for over 40 years, a father of two daughters, and grandfather to three boys. You do not want to miss this episode. He is highlighting the Pupscan project which has studied whether dysplasia is congenital or caused by environmental factors. The research studying over 70 breeds , hundreds of litters suggests in line with ground breaking studies in Sweden that the evidence reveals that there is no genetic influence on dysplasia in dogs as has already been confirmed in people. For more information click here.Follow Anna on:https://annawebb.co.uk We encourage you to feed your dog raw and believe Paleo Ridge is the best place to start!Produced by Mike Hanson for Pod People Productionshttps://podpeopleproductions.co.uk/ Music by Mike Hanson Cover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd @gruffpawtraits Art work by https://jaijo.com

Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals will have two players representing the team at this year's IIHF World Championships in May. Defenseman Martin Fehervary will be suiting up for Team Slovakia, bringing his solid two-way game to the international stage. Fehervary emerged as a reliable presence on the Capitals' blue line this season, using his speed and hockey IQ to shut down opponents' top scorers. Now he'll aim to do the same against elite talent at the Worlds. Meanwhile, forward Ryan Leonard will join Team USA's star-studded roster. Leonard, who won gold at the World Juniors earlier this year, is coming off a record-breaking sophomore season at Boston College where he tallied an astounding 41 points in just as many games. Leonard's invitation to Team USA speaks volumes about his maturity and high ceiling as a prospect. While other Capitals like Charlie Lindgren and Dylan Strome declined invites to focus on offseason training, Fehervary and Leonard are eager to gain more high-level experience. Considering the Capitals' early playoff exit, representing their countries will provide much-needed competition. It's a great chance for Fehervary and Leonard to develop further against elite international talent. If they can translate that experience back to the Capitals, it may give the team a boost toward greater success next season. Overall, Capitals fans should be excited to see these two youngsters test themselves on the global stage.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Monopoly GO!Get in the game and join your friends. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
The playoffs were a tough ending to an up and down season for the Capitals. After being eliminated in just four games, it was disappointing but good to see the young guys like McMichael and Lapierre step up and play well under the high pressure of the postseason. This team exceeded expectations considering the roster turnover from the start of the season, evolving in a way we couldn't have anticipated. But in the end, it presented an opportunity for the next generation of Capitals to gain valuable experience. The status of veterans like Oshie remains unclear, as his back problems may force him to reconsider returning. He's been a core leader on and off the ice, bringing energy and compete, so it's impressive what he's done for himself and the organization over the years. We'll give him time and support whatever decision he makes about his future. Offense will need to come from within and from new additions, with Ovechkin penciled in for 42 goals at age 38 but not able to carry the team alone anymore. More speed and size on defense could help too.It was a transition year with ups and downs but opportunities emerged for youth to develop. The early playoff exit stings but can serve as motivation to improve this offseason. Externally and internally, we'll look for ways to build on the positives and address the weaknesses to come back stronger next season.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Monopoly GO!Get in the game and join your friends. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
The Capitals were unceremoniously swept in the first round of the playoffs by the New York Rangers, abruptly ending what was largely a disappointing season for the once-mighty franchise. This humiliating defeat makes it clear that changes must be made this offseason if the Capitals hope to regain their competitive edge. GM Brian MacLellan faces tough questions about who should stay and who should go as he looks to retool the roster. As hockey insiders Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discussed, one player who could be on the move is goalie Darcy Kuemper. After the Capitals acquired him with high hopes, Kuemper posted the worst numbers of his career in Washington, with a bloated 3.31 goals against average and an abysmal .890 save percentage. He finished with a losing record of just 13-14-3 and did not record a single win after February 26th. With three years remaining on his expensive $5.25 million per year contract, the Capitals may look to trade Kuemper in the offseason, though they would likely need to retain some of his salary to make him palatable for other teams. While Kuemper does have a Stanley Cup championship to his name from his time in Colorado, his poor performance this past season makes him a tough sell. The emergence of backup Charlie Lindgren is a key factor here. Lindgren excelled when given the starting reins, playing in 28 of the last 35 games and leading the entire league with 6 shutouts. His unexpectedly strong play suggests he could take over as the starter next season, making Kuemper an expendable asset. With promising young goaltenders Clay Stenson and Hunter Shepard waiting in the wings as well, the Capitals have internal options beyond Kuemper. In addition to their goaltending quandary, the Capitals also face pressing questions about the roles of superstars Alex Ovechkin and TJ Oshie going forward. Ovechkin's ice time was managed carefully down the stretch this season as the aging captain chases down Gretzky's career goals record, and that strategic load management could very well continue into next season and beyond. Oshie, meanwhile, has battled mounting injury issues recently, playing in just 52 games this past disappointing season. Now 37 years old, retirement is not out of the question for the ailing yet inspirational leader. Losing Oshie's veteran presence would leave another gaping hole in the lineup that would need to be addressed. After their embarrassing early playoff exit, MacLellan and the Capitals clearly have a long offseason ahead as they look to reconfigure their aging roster and modify their strategy to make this team a true Stanley Cup contender once again. Many tough decisions await, but substantial change is clearly needed to reverse their downward trajectory. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Monopoly GO!Get in the game and join your friends. In 1319 Roger de Stangrave, a Hospitaller knight, and a Jew named Isaac arrived in England. For a ransom of 10,00 gold florins, Isaac had freed Stangrave, a stranger to him, from over 30 years of Mamluk captivity and then accompanied the knight home to be repaid. By 1322, Isaac has converted to Christianity and become Edward of St. John, with King Edward II taking him as godson. What motivated Isaac to ransom a stranger for such an exorbitant cost and leave his native Egypt and end up baptised in England which at the time had expelled all Jews with the decree of Edward I in 1290 (father of Edward II) until it was formally overturned under Oliver Cromwell in 1656? With the backdrop of the Crusades and European antisemitism, to share with us today his investigation of this curious tale is Dr. Rory MacLellan. Dr MacLellan completed his PhD in Medieval History 2019 at St. Andrews and is currently a cataloguer and manuscript researcher at the British Library. He specialises in medieval religious history, especially the crusades and the military-religious orders. His first book, ‘Donations to the Knights Hospitaller in Britain and Ireland', 1291-1400, is published by Routledge. TIMESTAMPS: 02:20 The first records of Jews in England start with William the Conqueror although one can speculate there may have been Jews prior during the Roman occupation. What many viewers may not know is that Jews were officially expelled from England by Edward I in 1290 until it was formally overturned under Oliver Cromwell in 1657. 15:37 The reign of Edward II (1284-1327) coincides with the titular caliphates of Al-Hakim I (1262 - 1302) and Al-Mustakfi I (1302-1340) and the de facto rule of a number of Mamluk sultans starting with Qalawun (1279-1290) and ending with the second reign Nasir ad-Din Muhammad (1299-1309). What was the socio-political context of Edward's reign domestically and abroad, and what was he like as a person? 20:41 He was also cucked by a Frenchman. His wife Isabella shacked up with a Roger Mortimer and declared war on her husband. What happened there? 24:27 And give us also an overview of the Crusades and how that forms the backdrop to our story. 28:43 Before we look at Isaac and his journey to England, tell us first about Stangrave and how he ended up as a prisoner of war. 30:35 Enter Isaac. What do we do know about him? 39:08 And tell us more about the Domus Conversorum: a London hospital for baptised Jews and their relatives. 44:05 Your essay is a really good example of a critical reading of the sources. Tell us what you think really happened and why. 51:30 Comparison of Jewish life in Mamluk Egypt and Christian England 1:00:08 You have also looked at how the so-called 'alt right' can manipulate medieval history for their political agenda. Tell us your views about that. For more on our guest: https://twitter.com/RFMacLellan https://bl.academia.edu/RoryMacLellan SPONSOR: We are sponsored by IHRC bookshop. For years, entrepreneur and author Scott MacLellan based success on the results he could measure each and every day. As a driven, self-reliant leader, he naturally carried that works-based mentality into his life as a husband, father, and Christian. But God showed him a better way through the biblical model of King Solomon, which Scott recounts in his book The Ancient Ladder. If you're a husband and father who struggles to let go and let God, Scott's wisdom and insight might be just what you need for the next season of your life. His transparency and experiences offer a great reminder and challenge to guys who feel the pressure to fix things in their own strength. In this episode Richard talks about leadership and faith with friend and returning guest Scott MacLellan. They also discuss what it was like to lead an organization in the healthcare industry during COVID. Scott has been a CEO for the last 25 years, leading multi-billion-dollar businesses and tens of thousands of employees. His companies have been voted one of the best places to work in healthcare multiple times. He's started two companies from scratch, one of which is a thirty-billion-dollar international company today. Harvard Business School profiled one of his start-ups in a case study. He's written nine books, is the executive producer of an upcoming streaming series in development and has even worked as a celebrity bodyguard. He now knows all of this business-success has been “vanity” and “chasing after the wind”. In fact, his greatest story is tied to being a follower of Jesus Christ, a husband of 38 years, a father of two daughters, and grandfather to three boys. “When I drank at the university pub, I loved it!”. Steve MacLellan had lots of great memories from his drinking days. By the time hit middle age, his inner voice was asking questions about why it wasn't like the glory days. Despite his best efforts, this engineer couldn't find the answers. He didn't drink more than his peers, but he couldn't NOT drink and feel content. Like all of our members, he recognized that he was operating at a 7 or 8, and that caused him more stress than the idea of taking a break from alcohol. Nearly one year later, Steve has levelled up every area of his life. What problem do you want to solve? What work is left undone? In this episode, Jeff and Daryl discuss: Switching from being a good business owner to being a generous giver. Understanding the competition and scaling your giving. The tension between the temporal and the eternal. Doing the Kingdom Math and the 100x challenge. Key Takeaways: Scaling your giving can be like starting another business. No decision is a decision - if you don't choose what to do with your giving, the decision will be made for you after you are gone. Generosity is about grace - you will find more margin and redemption as you put your focus on generosity. When God is asking us to step in faith, He will give as we take those steps. "As we reach the realms of generosity, this is where life is found. This is living life the way God designed us to live." — Daryl Heald About Daryl Heald:Daryl began his career as a commercial real estate broker in Atlanta, GA. In 1997 he joined the Maclellan Foundation serving on the executive committee and helping to lead its global grant-making strategy. The majority of his time now is spent in speaking and encouraging business people in the global financial capitals to be generous. He has worked with families on four continents regarding their philanthropy. He also is actively investing in private equity deals with a particular emphasis on businesses with social impact. Do you know God's motivations for your life, career, and generosity? In this episode, Jeff and Daryl discuss: Continuing on the multi-generational legacy of Thomas Maclellan. The freedom to be where God wants you to be. The push and pull of life transitions. Giving to God, not being led by the money. Key Takeaways: Write down your covenants with God - it is how your family and future generations will know you and know of your faith. God wants to speak to you personally - He will speak through His word and through others if you are willing to listen. Most giving starts locally and grows from there. You cannot start too small with your giving when led by God, you don't know where it will end up when guided by His hand. The answers to “why” form the belief. We all act on belief - but are we acting on personal beliefs or societal beliefs? Alvvays - "Pharmacist" from the 2022 album Blue Rev on Polyvinyl. Canadian indie-pop quintet Alvvays return this fall with Blue Rev, despite numerous misfortunes that came before it. A thief stole a recorder full of demos from frontwoman Molly Rankin's apartment. The very next day, a basement flood nearly ruined all the band's gear. On the plus side, they recruited two new band members — drummer Sheridan Riley and bassist Abbey Blackwell — but, on the bummer side, COVID-related border closures prevented band rehearsals. But the band persevered to craft their most mature (and longest!) LP yet. Keyboardist Kerri MacLellan and guitarist Alec O'Hanley contributed more to the songwriting process this time, adding fresh perspectives to their melodic sound. Blue Rev is named for a "sugary alcoholic beverage Rankin and MacLellan used to drink as teens on rural Cape Breton," and the songs within express that sweet, dizzy, exuberant feeling. Blue Rev will be released October 7th via Polyvinyl, with an October 22nd date at The Moore Theatre in Seattle.
