Welcome to season 11 episode 1, welcome to the Danger Zone! Let's talk iconic Scottish trail races, let's talk Scottish running icons, let's talks West Highland Way race, let's talk to Fiona Rennie. Fiona started running in the early 1980's and has covered a fair few miles since! 103 ultra marathons...so far! Fiona's first ultramarathon was the Speyside Way and her results from that race were posted to her with a wee note from race director Don Ritchie. How times have changed! Proud to wear the Carnegie Harriers (Fiona was the first female member) vest, it's a familiar sight at many iconic race across the land, none more so than the West Highland Way Race, which Fiona has completed 17 (SEVENTEEN) times. Also an ever present at both the Glenmore 24 and Loch Ness Marathon events, the miles have been racked up...and then some! Fiona's first experience of the West Highland Way Race was supporting her twin sister Pauline, and somewhere along the way (in 2002 specifically) Fiona felt inspired to give it a go herself in 2003. We hear openly from Fiona about health issues and treatments which she has suffered and recovered from, explains how messages and support the ultrarunning community meant so much to her and what inspired her to get back out running again. They make 'em tough in Fife ye know! Fiona wakes up with a smile every day, and shares her inspirational story of 'getting back to being me' after major surgery. Maybe grab a wee hanky for this bit! Where would you keep 17 (SEVENTEEN) West Highland Way Race goblets? We find out about that, and a decanter too, and they aren't just for display, which we love! And another decanter for running over a 1,000 miles around the course at Glenmore, jeezy peeps man. Fiona posts a message each year on the Facebook West Highland Way Race Family page, we discuss this and so many other glorious memories and inspirational messages from a woman who lights up Scottish Ultra Running by simply being who she is without compromise. To quote Fiona, running is an 'enjoyable celebration of being alive' There are tips aplenty for both runners and support crews in this episode, and who better to deliver them than our pal and yours Fiona Rennie. The Owensboro Police Department informs us that the Bourbon initially thought to be stolen, was actually misrouted. Tune in to our latest podcast to discover the full details of this incident, which initially appeared to involve $70,000 worth of stolen Bourbon whiskey, drawing parallels to the famed Pappy Van Winkle Heist of 2013. Not all flowers are grown equal. Or at least not according to Nikki Davey, a truffle and flower producer from Victoria's Glenmore. The entrepreneur is the AgriFutures Rural Women's Award finalist for Victoria for her work co-founding Grown not Flown — a digital platform that supports the slow flower movement, connecting flower consumers with local and sustainable producers. Yet, Nikki never thought she'd come back to the 300-acre property she grew up on — let alone work to make it a viable business. For the last 21 years, the AgriFutures Rural Women's Award has empowered and celebrated the leadership of women involved in Australia's rural and emerging industries, businesses and communities. Equipped with a $15,000 Westpac grant, each of the state and territory winners are in the running for the national winner and runner up to be announced in September — awarded an additional $20,000 and $15,000 Westpac grant respectively.

Nikki Davey is a co-founder of https://grown-not-flown.com/ (Grown Not Flown) - a digital platform supporting the slow flower movement to reduce flower miles, boost local economies and showcase the best our flower industry has to offer. Launched in 2021 during the pandemic, Grown Not Flown started as a social media platform showcasing and promoting local farmers growing seasonal blooms. It quickly morphed into an app to facilitate an easier connection between growers and consumers. Grown not Flown now boasts over 500 growers on the app and is in 14 different countries; there is nothing slow about this brands growth. Nikki lives with her partner in Glenmore, a small rural hamlet in Victoria, and was this year named a Victorian finalist for the AgriFutures Rural Women's Award. Nikki shares with us the start up phases of Grown Not Flown, why it's important to know where our flowers come from, the value in identifying transferrable skills, her recent learning of what it means to be neurodivergent, as well as her personal story of miscarriage. In this episode, we speak about miscarriage and for some this may be difficult to listen to. If so, you might want to skip this episode or move through it mindfully. Glenmore 24, move for 12 or 24 hours, sounds easy...right? Think again! This episode is focused on an insight into G24, which is organised by Rockets Events Your hosts Steven (support role) and John (athlete...read that again) ventured up the A9 to Glenmore Forest, and had themselves a ball of a time. What does it take to run/walk/move for 12 or 24 hours (there are two options)? Well, that takes a lot of things including: kit, food, hydration, mindset, a smile, did we mention food? Most importantly, it takes people, an army of people who support each other with a special kinda (sometimes) tough love. DISCLAIMER: Listening to this episode may end up with you standing in the Hayfield one September thinking "what happened there!"
Our one-week hiatus is over, long live YHRF!! And we reckon you deserve a belting episode; this week certainly fits that bill. We kick off proceedings with a wee host catch up. We've a fair smattering of stuff to cover after what has been a busy few weeks in the world of running. 100k World Champs featuring plenty pals of the show, UTMB with Jim Walmsley wearing tights as the GOAT delivered yet again. On top of all that there is the small matter of John toeing the start line this weekend at Glenmore, 24 hours of forward momentum pending! Then we are delighted to welcome our guest, Sabrina Pace-Humphreys. Sabrina classes herself as a passionate amateur athlete, after spending an hour plus in her company she is all that plus lots lots more. It's fair to say that Sabrina has coped with a lot during her life. In an honest, frank and powerful way she explains just how she fell in love with running and how that love for running helped fuel the activist in her. Sabrina co-founded Black Trail Runners in 2020. Black Trail Runners are a campaigning group and registered charity who strive to diversify trail running, encouraging, inspiring and supporting black people to participate. Black Trail Runners has quickly grown into a movement that campaigns to remove the barriers for black people to take part in trail running. Our conversation with Sabrina surrounding this is emotive and thought-provoking. Her energy and desire shining brightly. Now a published author Sabrina talks about her book and what compelled her to write it. Black Sheep: A Story of Rural Racism, Identity and Hope has already received 5-star reviews across the board and we can't wait to get our copy to be inspired. We then discover Sabrina the Ultra-Marathoner. The coach. The leader. The inspiration. She's quite the woman and we are 100% sure you'll love to hear her story. In this week's episode we focus on our trip last weekend to the inaugural Run with Pyllon event held in shadow of the Cairngorms at Badaguish Outdoor Centre. If gleaning knowledge from inspirational coaches, mixing with other like-minded folks from across the running community or indeed running in the breath-taking Scottish Highlands is your thing you'll be keen to hear our review of what turned out to be a memorable day. None of that turn you on? Well, there was scran and, unsurprisingly, we cover that in great detail. Leading the day were our pals (and joint YHRF appearance record holders!), James Stewart and Debbie Martin-Consani heading up an all-star Pyllon cast. Ably abetted by fellow coach Grant MacDonald and the amazing Karen Nicoll providing the icing on the cake we knew from the off the day would be special. Under blue blue skies we got to take full advantage of our location as we were taken on a tour of the iconic Glenmore 24 loop on the banks of Loch Morlich, describing the setting doesn't quite do it justice, Scotland in its fullest pomp. A run workshop with an opportunity to pick the brains of the coaches as well as other athletes flew by, meeting some of you guys who listen to the pod provided the cherry on top of that already tasty cake. That's before we got the oppo to take a dip in the Loch….yip taps aff the lot! With an avo spent refuelling whilst getting to hear from James, Debs, Grant and Karen in a workshop designed to help mindset and approaches to endurance events a rich day of learning was complete. We had a treat of a day mixing with all the other participants and learning so much about how to approach 24-hour or looped racing. A whole new set of tactics were gleaned and are now sitting pretty in our toolbox waiting to be unleashed. Good luck to anyone racing at Glenmore in a fortnight, that includes Jamie Marshall our Run with Pyllon competition winner who had a blast at the event, go get that ton Jamie!! In this episode of The Long View, T.C. Reid and I are pleased to be joined by returning contributor Stephen Miller as we discuss one of his favorite games, Glen More. What makes this game so unique? Can a tableau builder that encourages you to NOT build your tableau actually work? Where does the tension in the game come from? How does it compare to the new release Lunarchitects? What general strategy advice does Stephen have for you? Find out the answer to these questions and more in this episode! The Long View is a proud member of The Dice Tower Network of podcasts.
