For this episode we go back into the vault for an interview conducted ten years ago with Joe Clokey. He was the son of the man who created and animated Gumby, the most bendable children's TV character ever. Joe grew up in California as "Gumby's little brother," watching his dad and mom stamp out dozens of brightly coloured characters out of plastercine in creating a unique world of stop-animation wonder.TV audiences first saw Gumby on a short film tested during a broadcast of NBC's The Howdy Doody Show in 1955. That led to a full season order the next year, extended about once a decade on various networks into the '60s, '70s and '80s. Clokey tells story after story about how the character evolved, who did the voices and even details about the theme song. It was his big sister and a friend singing, "He was once a little green slab of clay..." to a tune composed by a prominant jazz musician. The music played millions of times for a paltry one-time fee. Even Clokey lost out when a spinoff merchandising deal made a fortune -- not for him, but for the toy company. We also talk about Clokey's other famous series, Davey and Goliath, a collection of suburban kiddie parables bankrolled by the Lutheren church. I saw both shows daily as a lad while watching Rocketship 7 and Commander Tom as they beamed across Lake Ontario from Buffalo, N.Y., on WKBW.

For decades, I've scoured the internet for audio adaptation of “War of the Worlds”. More of the time, they are remade performances of the 1938 Mercury Theatre on the air version that launched my entire obsession. But every so often I find a new adaptation that offers a new take on the story. But this year, I've found something I've never heard before. A remake of the 1971 WKBW version of “War of the Worlds”. I've made no secret of the fact the WKBW version of “War of the Worlds” is my favorite version - specifically the 1971 version. I was stunned to come across this 1978 remake of the story performed and aired by KSEI 930 AM in Pocatello, Idaho. And now, I'm excited to share it in this year's War of the Worlds week event.
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by WKBW-TV Buffalo sports anchor and reporter Briana Aldridge for a conversation about her life and career so far that's recorded live from Imperial Pizza from South Buffalo. Briana has been crushing it since coming to Buffalo in 2022 to join the Channel 7 sports team. They have a conversation about what led her to coming to Western New York and if it was a difficult decision for her at the time. Despite being young and relatively new(ish) to sports broadcasting professionally, Briana's incredibly traveled and has lived in many parts of the country. She talks about being born and raised in California and also spend time in several other places either professionally or educationally---including Georgia, West Virgina, Louisiana, Nebraska and Colorado. Among other topics discussed is some of Briana's biggest influences, cultivating personal and professional relationships amongst her peers in the Buffalo market, her views on social media, thoughts on her time so far in Buffalo and of course, a "Fun Fact Finale" to learn even more about one of the sports broadcasting media's true rising stars. You can follow Briana on Twitter @BreeAldridge and be sure to check out the amazing works she'd doing at WKBW-TV. Big shout-out and thank you once again to Imperial Pizza for being an awesome host and of course their ridiculously good wings and pizza! ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. In January 2024, Matt Aquiline, who was a guest on the podcast in 2023, and also runs a Facebook page entitled “Buffalo & WNY Garage Bands” posted a clipping from the 1965 WKBW 16-hour Variety Telethon featuring over 65 local performers. One of the bands on that broadcast, The Avantis, featured this week's guest, Richard Sargent. No stranger to the podcast, Richard was the very first guest and returned to share more stories on Christmas Eve in 2022. He now marks the season finale. We discussed in detail the telethon's bands and the story behind the article. As a special ending, "She's Gone," The Avantis' only recorded song that was included on the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame's Compilation CD IV and Compilation Vinyl Album Volume 1, 2016 is featured at the end of the episode.
MANIAC drops a bonus episode as he catches up with Michael Schwartz of WKBW and Chad Dedominicis of xBuffalo.
Joe Beamer, filling in for Bauerle today, brings on meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski of WKBW to talk about some of the record high temperatures we've seen already this week which begs the question, is winter in WNY done already?
Today, Bauerle touches on police bodycams after a story by WKBW about the recent officer involved shooting in Hamburg, of which there is no footage because the officers did not have bodycams. Also, Bauerle touches on Biden's tough press conference yesterday.
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by WKBW-TV sports reporter and anchor Dom Tibbetts for a candid and fun conversation about his life and career through this point. Tibbetts talks about growing up in the Syracuse area and knowing at a young age that being in sports broadcasting was a dream he was willing to chase. It was a path that sent him around the country before ultimately landing in Buffalo at Channel 7. After college Tibbetts discusses the process of applying for more than 40 jobs before finally getting his opportunity---taking him all the way to Butte, Montana. The guys talk about culture shock living out west and then again in 2020 where Tibbetts' career took him to Tallahassee, Florida. Dom talks about how big college and high school sports are in Florida and some of the challenges that came with going to a job during the height of the Covid era. Tibbetts was looking for a chance to get into the Buffalo market and that came in 2022. He talks about how that opportunity came about and with respect to Florida it was an easy decision for him. They also discuss some of his colleagues at the station, peers in the Buffalo sports media market and how for the most part everyone's friendly with each other. They end with a "Fun Fact Finale", which hasn't happened in a hot minute on this show because it's been a while since having a first-time guest. Included among the cool things we learn about Dom is his early crush on Shania Twain, a unique go-to snack, a bad habit he calls himself out for and him winning $10,000 and other goodies before as a contestant on The Price is Right. Be sure to follow Dom on Twitter @DomTibbetsTV and check out the great work he's doing over at Channel 7. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. Description: In this episode, I am speaking with the legendary Fritz Coleman who went from being the weathercaster for NBC in Los Angeles from 1982 to 2020 to co-hosting Media Path Podcast with Louise Palanker in 2020. Fritz has an inspiring story to tell that you need to hear. This is from his Wikipedia page: After growing up in Radnor, Pennsylvania, he attended Salem University in West Virginia and Temple University in Philadelphia where he studied radio, television, and film. Like many popular weather anchors, he serves as a reporter instead of a meteorologist since he doesn't have a degree in meteorology. He worked as a comedian and disc jockey for several years and as radio personality "Jay Fredericks" at WBEN and later WKBW in Buffalo, New York. He left Buffalo for Los Angeles in 1980 to work as a stand-up comic. In 1982, he began work as a weekend weatherman at KNBC and became the weekday weatherman in 1984. He also hosted or appeared on a number of other KNBC shows, such as "It's Fritz" (1988-1990) and "What a Week" (1990 – 1991). He has written and performed two one-man theater acts, titled The Reception and It's Me! Dad! He received the 2004 EMA Community Service Award for his involvement with KNBC's 4 Our Planet, a children's program. He appeared in a supporting role in one of Raymond Burr's last Perry Mason television films, The Case of the Telltale Talk Show Host, in 1993. He received a "thanks" credit on the film Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie, an "alternate film" companion to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. From 2009 to 2011, Coleman also did the weekday weather (in addition to KNBC) for San Diego's NBC affiliate, KNSD. On June 17, 2020, Coleman announced that he would retire on Friday, June 26 after almost 40 years at KNBC. I think you will find Fritz's story quite entertaining and more importantly inspiring.
