Becoming Your Best Version
A Conversation with Christine Fallert Kessides, Author of Magda, Standing

Becoming Your Best Version

Christine Fallert Kessides became a first-time novelist at age 70, when her young adult book, Magda, Standing, was published and received significant acclaim. Christine was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was interested in the fact that all her ancestors (those she could identify) were from Germany. After reviewing her family genealogy and reflecting on some of her relatives' experiences, she was inspired to write Magda's story.  About the novel Magda, Standing: When her father pulls her out of high school to care for her invalid mother and little brother, sixteen-year-old Magda is devastated—but the greater challenge is saving her family in the face of a war and pandemic.  Magda, Standing -- a YA (Young Adult) historical novel released June 2023 from Bold Story Press -- concerns a girl in a German immigrant family in Pittsburgh in 1916-19, confronting the impacts on her family of World War One and the Spanish flu.     The novel speaks to many themes that young people confront today: Balancing the demands of family and tradition with their own ambitions; seeking education despite financial obstacles; dealing with mental illness in a family member; feeling public resentment of immigrants; facing first-time independence from home; and confronting violence and death. Awards include: Gold medalist - 2024 Ben Franklin Award from Independent Book Publishers Association, IBPA - for Young Adult Audiobook Silver medalist - 2023 Story Circle Sarton's Book Award - Young Adult category Bronze medalist - 2023 MOONBEAM Children's Book Award - Young Adult Fiction: Historical/Cultural  Finalist for the 2023 international Eyelands Book Award for published Historical Fiction/Memoir  In this episode, we discuss themes in her book that touch on immigration to the U.S., the effect of pandemics and how the devastation of the Spanish Flu outsized the Covid-19 pandemic in fatalities, the critical importance of nurses, World War I, family and the challenges attendant to coming of age. Takeaways from Magda, Standing, include driving hard to pursue one's dreams and how we can survive almost anything with support, particularly from family. Christine attended college and graduate school at Northwestern University and Princeton University, respectively. She had a career writing policy reports for the World Bank on international development. In her spare time, she volunteers with nonprofits that support women and families and especially enjoys reading, travel, yoga and sharing books with friends. She lives outside Washington DC, in suburban Maryland with her husband, and sees their four children, two grandchildren, and four grand-dogs as often as possible. Christine currently is writing the sequel to Magda, Standing, as well as working on a children's picture book. She spoke about Magda, Standng at the historic Chautauqua Institution (live and on Zoom) in August. On this edition of Parallax Views, noted Portland, OR radio personality Rick Emerson joins us to discuss the wild story of the controversial anti-drug book Go Ask Alice as explored in his book Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposer Behind the World's Most Notorious Diaries. In 1971, a book purporting to be the diaries of a teenage girl who fell into drug addiction through LSD swept the nation. In an age of growing concerns over teenage drug use, especially psychedelics, the book became a sensational success and has continuously remained in-print since that time. Questions about the authenticity of the book, credited to "Anonymous", arose and the truth about the book's actual author leads one to Beatrice Sparks, a conservative Mormon youth counselor who would later go on to fan fears about Satanism through the similarly-claimed-to-be-autobiographical-account-of-teen-trouble Jay's Journal. Rick and I will discuss the story of Go Ask Alice and the question of its authorship throughout the conversation on this episode as well as delving into the political climate of the 1970s, legendary TV personality Art Linkletter and the crusade against drugs in response to the 60s counterculture, the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, the TV movie version of Go Ask Alice starring Star Trek's William Shatner, why Go Ask Alice resonated with many youths who read the book, parents offended by Go Ask Alice subject matter and depiction of drug use, book banning and Go Ask Alice, the religious background and conservative Republican politics of Beatrice Sparks, the American press/media and Go Ask Alice, literary frauds and literary imposters, Richard Nixon and the War on Drugs, teenaged sex in Go Ask Alice and how that made the book scandalous, Go Ask Alice as the birth of the YA (Young Adult) novel, the infamous "Another day, another blowjob" line in the book, parental fears about the state of the youth reflected in Go Ask Alice, Go Ask Alice as sensationalistic anti-drug propaganda in the form of a "cautionary tale" (and why it may be more than that for many of the people that read it), Go Ask Alice as a book with a cult following today due to its camp quality, how Rick became interested in Go Ask Alice and the story behind it, the diary format of the book and the mystery/allure around the book being written by "Anonymous", Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane song "White Rabbit" with the line "Go Ask Alice", the teen suicide follow-up to Go Ask Alice entitled Jay's Journal, Go Ask Alice's protagonist as being a composite of people Beatrice Sparks treated as a counselor, the early advertising for Go Ask Alice, the early reviews of Go Ask Alice and the glowing New York Times review that treated it as an authentic diary without much skepticism, the question of whether Go Ask Alice is a good book (well-written vs. impactful to the reader), exploring Go Ask Alice in light of phenomena like fake news and right-wing conspiracy theories like QAnon and Pizzagate, how Jay's Journal helped create or accelerate the fears about Satanic cults and cult-related teen suicide, scapegoating and how books like Go Ask Alice and Jay's Journal can actually cause us to sweep the real causes of youth issues like adolescent mental health under the rug, the moral panic about Dungeons and Dragons being a tool of the devil of the 1980s, moral panics and the muzzling of child creativity, how lines from Go Ask Alice were recycled in later Beatrice Sparks books, why do literary hoaxes like Go Ask Alice and the JT Leroy books happen?, and much, much more! It's an amazing story that will lead us into discussion of politics, social mores, censorship, paranoia, moral panics, history, literary hoaxes, the War on Drugs, the tumultuous climate of the 1970s, and the struggles of being a teenager in America.

-YA: Young Adult. What does codependency in Young Adults with their parents look like? -How does social media compound codependency and “comparison-itis?” -How can Young Adults stop caring so much about what others think to pursue their dreams? In this week's episode, Marissa is joined by Tess Brigham, LMFT. Tess works exclusively with Young Adults and shares with us the ways she often sees codependency in their lives. Tess describes the codependency young adults often have with their parents, particularly with one parent, and with social media. Tess touches on aspects of “control” and how codependents are often seeking to control others to feel in-control themselves. We conclude with ways that Tess works with her clients to get clear on what they want and how to build their self-awareness to pursue their life dreams.  It's a must-listen! Thanks for listening! Heck yes! Tess shares with us her definition of codependency and how she witnessed that often when she worked with other battling addiction. Tess opens up about codependency in her own life, including with you son, where she unintentionally enabled his social anxiety in an unconscious effort to keep everything calm.  Tess describes ways she has witnessed codependency in the young adults she works with, especially where one young adult is highly codependent with one parent. Marissa opens up about aspects of her codependency in young adulthood and how that relates to social media.  Tess expands on how social media can lead to “comparison-itis” where we do things out of comparing or being compared to others. This can lead us to do things that are out of alignment with our true values so Tess helps her clients get in touch with what they want.  “What do you want?” Tess sympathizes with the young adults in her practice, as well as with our listeners, since they often do feel like they are “behind” if they aren't measuring up to their peers. Tess shares ways to combat this type of thinking and reminds everyone “careers are long. Relationships are long. Lifetimes ARE LONG.” We conclude with a discussion on boundaries and how, after setting them, it's okay and normal to have to set them over and over and over again.  Questions for homework: How does social media compound your codependency? Are you codependent with one parent in particular? How come you think that is? Do you struggle with feeling “behind?” How do you then put yourself into restrictive/rigid jobs, relationships, housing situations due to feeling “behind?” What do you want in this life? How are you working towards or against achieving that? This week’s ‘My Reading Corner’, I talk with bestselling author Tami Charles. Her newest YA novel, Muted has already received wide acclaim. Although considered a YA (Young Adult) author, her novels are meant to be read by parents and adults. With stress and social media, dreams and promises, Tami’s books are ones that help her young adult audience know that they’re not alone. For the older generation, they give insight into the minds of young adults. Muted brought back Tami’s time tasting fame in her teens and early twenties. She was a member of an all-girl R&B trio. How about performing for Boys II Men, BET and Showtime at the Apollo? The main character of Muted had to be a young girl searching for fame as a songwriter. Once Tami realized that, the words flowed and a powerful story was written. It’s a story of ambition, music and exploitation. And it’s the story of innocence lost and young women regaining their voices. Meet Tami Tami is the New York Times bestselling author of All Because You Matter. She’s written numerous books for children and young adults. Like Vanessa, her middle school debut book earned a Top 10 spot on the Indies Introduce and Spring Kids’ Next lists, three starred reviews and a Junior Library Guild selection. As a teen and into her early twenties, Tami unclicked the buttons, and was as loud as hell as a member of a 1990’s R&B singing group. Muted brought her back to the music industry and found her writing and singing her songs. Tami herself has said: We had a song on the radio that played at like 2 in the morning when everyone was sleeping. We didn’t make it to the grand stage, but those were the times of my life! ‘If hard work was what it was going to take to make it to the top, then that's exactly what I'd serve up - black girl mixed with grit stardust spice magic.’ A powerful conversation with Tami Charles: The all-girls R&B, fame and music Teenagers, dreams and asperations Ambition and exploitation Workplace violence and women Putting a lens on the music industry Young women regaining their voice Writing for young adults All Because You Matter – a picture book with love and a lullaby Muted – a YA novel-in-verse The audiobook, her songs and her voice

So candidly, that I knew this is exactly the conversation needed for so many. With much humor and humility, Abby speaks about her own struggles. Her struggles with an eating disorder, her intimidation of those who are supposed to be in the know and how improv and comedy helped her hide. And how she finally took control. Control that she is not letting go of. “Anything I should know before I go home?” I asked the chief cardiologist, trying not to sound terrified. “Just don’t lift stuff over 10 pounds for a few weeks.” “My baby is over 10 pounds.” Abby refers to herself as a performer, obsessive compulsive comedian, writer and mom. Welcome to our 59th Episode of WDEK Podcast. Justin the intern starts the live show on a Tuesday night at the Red Room in NYC! Christian just returned from father's retirement party in Chicago. Shonali just returned from Nashville where she kept up with the news about a racist crazy tv star and her tweets. What's it like to have your creative work rejected in person to your face over and over?  We ask our first guest that question. She is cartoonist, illustrator, writer and performer Emily Flake.  She has "cobbled" together a living as a cartoonist for a long time now. She's come a long way from being an ad sales person for alt weekly New York Blade to becoming a successful cartoonist who has had hundreds of her works featured in the New Yorker.  She's written a book about parenting called Mama Tried. She's a parent who refreshingly doesn't think being a parent is the MOST awesome thing in the world. How cool is that? Look out for her upcoming YA (Young Adult) book she's working on now, a fictional fanzine from 1992.  Our second guest is H. Jon Benjamin, a comedian, actor and writer probably most famous for his work as the voice of Bob in Bob's Burgers and the voice of Archer in Archer.  Benjamin as Shonali calls him (they are old friends) used to host a comedy show in the East Village called Midnight Pajama Jam. It was the best. JB's written a book that just came out called Failure is An Option: An Attempted Memoir.  Shonali's been listening to the audiobook and loves it.  She is intrigued by Jon Benjamin's love for disco, roller skating and disco balls.  Jon explains what the main take away from his book is in two words. We Get It Off Our Chest with illustrator musician Marcellus Hall who refuses to rap with us. Our final guest is musician, singer, songwriter Rob Townsend.  Rob is originally from Spartanburg, SC.  He's also a part time sailing instructor and may be the only gay sailing captain on the Hudson. We like the idea of a gay sailboat. We discuss the difficulty of selling music during an era where everyone gets their music free.  Rob moved to NYC from Austin, TX where he was in a folk band.  His music has changed drastically.  He is humble and self deprecating but we think he's awesome. He sings an original song called Clatskanie and a Randy Newman tune called Short People! Welcome to our new sound engineer Ezana Million! ENJOY!!! Photo by Daria Huxley.

My Boyfriend is a Bear is out now and really fun!! Spectacle by Megan Rose Gedris is out in 2 weeks and we’re having a circus-themed release party for it! Free Comic Book Day 2018 is over, so of course we’re working on Free Comic Book Day 2019. Ideas come out organically in this very discussion. Contest of Challengers has a new logo… borrowed from a current DC comic. DC is starting to offer incentive variants and we’re not really on board with this plan. More and more people are wanting just the DC variant covers each week. We’ve had more people ask for this week’s Suicide Squad variant than we can sell of issues off the shelf. How does that even happen? Young Animal is ending in August. We’ve heard rumors of a few new DC titles and creative team changes. Bud Plant will no longer exhibit at San Diego, after 48 years. Random House is starting their own all-ages graphic novel imprint, and our friend Gina Gagliano is heading it! This is amazing news for the comics industry! John Barber is the new Editor-In-Chief of IDW Publishing. Black Badge is the new BOOM! Studios comic from Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins. Thing black op boy and girl scouts. There is a “Men in Comics” panel at TCAF this weekend and it sounds wonderfully hilarious.

Ep. 109: Jamie Ford is a Multiracial Asian man with roots in China.  He's also, according to Jamie, part "Betty Crocker" White (on his mother's side).  In addition, he is the New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet—which was, in no particular order, an IndieBound NEXT List Selection, a Borders Original Voices Selection, a Barnes & Noble Book Club Selection, Pennie’s Pick at Costco, a Target Bookmarked Club Pick, and a National Bestseller. It was also named the #1 Book Club Pick for Fall 2009/Winter 2010 by the American Booksellers Association. In addition, Hotel has been translated into 34 languages. He jokes that he's still holding out for Klingon (that’s when, Jamie says, you know you’ve made it). His new novel, Songs of Willow Frost was published September 10, 2013. And he's also working on a YA (Young Adult) series. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Jamie is the proud father of more teenagers than he can keep track of. Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.

For teens and adults alike, works of fiction are a powerful tool for exploring emotions and behavior. As Los Angeles-based psychotherapist and YA (Young Adult) author Matt Casper puts it, stories can "increase empathy and also imagination, allowing the reader to explore the mind of another." With that perspective, young readers can understand themselves better as well as increase their understanding others. Annie talks with Matt about the therapeutic value of exploring fictional characters, especially characters who are flawed (like all of us!) About Matt Casper (@mattcaspermft) Matt Casper, M.A., MFT, is a psychotherapist and author of more than 20 Emotes books aimed at assisting children with identifying, understanding and expressing emotion. The characters of the "Emotes" each represent a different emotion. In addition to the Emotes books, Matt has also designed and created a wide range of therapeutic resources including board games, interactive toys, and a structured classroom curriculum. Through these stories, games, and educational exercises, the Emotes characters model for children (as well as adults) healthy and fun ways of increasing emotional mindfulness and healthy emotional management. Matt is currently posting twice-weekly installments to his episodic novel for teens, The Ongoing Memoir of Coltrane P. Jones.
