The conversation of Burnout continues as our host Tania Anders catches up with Chisa Uyeki, Collection Development Librarian Faculty of 17-years, to have a deeper discussion about her recent presentation from Spring Flex day 2024, on her findings regarding Burn-out during her sabbatical. We revisit the defining factors of Burnout from how it feels to how to recover and how we can take on the work of social and environmental justice and anti-racism in a sustainable manner. What is burnout? What causes burnout? How can we recover from burnout? How can we take on the work of social and environmental justice and anti-racism in a sustainable manner that won't leave us burnt out? While most of us have, unfortunately, seen the impact of burnout on ourselves, colleagues, and students, we may not have a shared understanding of the root causes or how to address burnout, manage stressors, and develop meaningful ways to break stress cycles and build resiliency. Additionally, the role and responsibility of individuals, institutions, and systems play a role in perpetuating a culture which leads to burnout. Chisa Uyeki, Collection Development Librarian Faculty of 17-years embarked on a year-long sabbatical research project during which she studied burnout, it's causes, and how to recover, and she shared her findings with us at our 2024 Spring Flex Day to contribute to building a community of care at Mt. SAC. I want to talk about trans people, who they are, and why do people care so much about trans visibility? In this podcast we talk about how transphobia is related to rigid gender roles, the patriarchy, and white supremacy. We also discuss the risk factors trans communities face such as increased risk of depression, anxiety, and dying by suicide. (I did include a content warning for today's podcast at the beginning of the show.) We talk about the differences between gender vs. sex and how gender is a social construct. Change is good and needed if we want to make a more inclusive, safe world. I hope you listen to this with an open mind and heart because trans people aren't going anywhere. Or: is it more like smog, that we can each do something to help clear?According to evermindgroup.com, “Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) are impacted both in terms of increased risk for mental health problems and in their access to mental health care. Unfortunately, systemic barriers and inequities prevent those in BIPOC communities from receiving the behavioral health treatment they need. When BIPOC communities are disproportionately affected during moments of national crisis, this problem is exacerbated. “Is the system imbalanced? Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. Episode: 033 “Stomping the Stigma of Mental Health” Airdate: September 22, 2021Length: 54:45Guests: DeShun Radcliff It is always sacred space when someone is vulnerable enough to be transparent and share their journey with others. That is not something to take lightly. Mrs. DeShun Radcliff does just that, she invites us into a sacred space to hear her struggle and continued victories over depression. She is the founder of the “Stigma Stomping” Brand where she hopes to encourage people to not be afraid to talk about their mental health struggles. In this episode Mrs. Radcliff discusses what inspired her to become an advocate in this area. Between her own battle and her daughter's, she has learned a great deal about noticing and attending to the signs. She acknowledges her mistakes as a mother, yet she is committed, as a mother, to not allow those mistakes to keep her from nurturing and championing her daughter as she allows others to champion her. This episode is vital for parents. She shares practical steps to consider if there is a child fighting this battle. She is also honest about the role the church has played historically in her silence and what she ought to do moving forward to shepherd people through mental health concerns. The stigma around mental health has been perpetuated by the church, but this is a time for redemption. She is real. She is passionate. She is wise. Listen to her wisdom and accept her challenge to not be afraid of the stigmas. Mental health in the Black community has become less taboo than ever before, but we still have a long way to go. In this month's episode, we discuss the personal—our individual experiences with therapy and mental health—along with the public—the visibility of mental health struggles in public figures like Simone Biles. Later, mental health therapist Dr. Lawrence Jackson joins us to discuss the wide range of topics and emotions that show up in therapy for Black people. Finally, we wrap things up by comparing the depictions of therapy sessions in TV shows Girlfriends and Insecure to see if mental health depictions shifted generationally or stayed the same.Notes:Black And African American Communities And Mental Healthhttps://www.mhanational.org/issues/black-and-african-american-communities-and-mental-healthHow diverse is the psychology workforce?https://www.apa.org/monitor/2018/02/datapointNational Alliance on Mental Illness - Black/African Americanhttps://www.nami.org/Your-Journey/Identity-and-Cultural-Dimensions/Black-African-AmericanThe Extra Stigma of Mental Illness for African-Americanshttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/25/well/mind/black-mental-health.html Young Black athletes are launching a mental health revolutionhttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/young-black-athletes-are-launching-mental-health-revolution-rcna1490 Exclusive poll: Americans care about Olympians' mental healthhttps://www.axios.com/olympics-mental-health-simone-biles-axios-momentive-poll-748bc171-e342-4dd0-a192-e568e6893f19.html An Appreciation of Molly's Therapist's Office on Insecurehttps://www.vulture.com/2017/09/insecure-molly-therapist-office.htmlWhere to find Dr. Lawrence Jackson (The Black Male Therapist)https://theblackmaletherapist.com/https://www.instagram.com/theblackmaletherapist/https://twitter.com/blacktherapyfriGirlfriends Episodes (Available on Netflix)Season 2, Episode 1: "The Fallout"Season 2, Episode 2: "Just Say No"Season 4, Episode 14: "Leggo My Ego"Season 4, Episode 16: "On The Couch"Season 4, Episode 21: "Just the Three of Us"Insecure Episodes (Available on HBO)Season 1, Episode 7: "Real as Fuck"Season 2, Episode 1: "Hella Great"Season 2, Episode 2: "Hella Questions"Season 4, Episode 9: "Lowkey Trying"

Today I returned home to the devastating news of 2 children in our district whose lives tragically ended, allegedly by their mother. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of these children and we stand in mourning with our school district community and our community at large. There are no words to express how deeply the heartbreaking loss of these children has impacted many. Many questions have already come to the surface around mental health, support and so many other layers unfolding. As we remember this month being Mental Heath Awareness Month, I am sharing a replay of a two part show focused on mental health awareness and #breakingthestigma. For both, I am joined a team of clinicians who are experts in this area. They offer tips, resources and support while sharing their experiences and how we can individually and collectively destigmatize mental health. May we take care of ourselves and look out for the well being of others who may need support. Maybe someone today nears to receive this. I've come to understand that mental health isn't black and white, it affects us all very differently. My experience as a black woman isn't necessarily the same for a black man. For this week's episode, we dive into how mental health affects black men and ways to find the help that they need. Welcome back! We're coming at you a little late this time around guys because we were practicing what we preach! In today's episode we're talking all about mental health. It's obviously hard to wrap it all up in a little package considering the topic is so broad, but we focus on mental health stigmas in the Latinx Community, in our families, with relationships, and we skim by postpartum depression (though it really deserves its own episode). Both Karina and I really enjoyed recording this episode as it was a bit more personal. We talk lots of feelings guys. We list the resources that helped us create our episode and if you're looking to do some more research on this topic see the list below! As always please make sure to follow us on Instagram @ispeakspaglishyque where we post more content. Also, please make sure to subscribe to out podcast and leave us a review we really do appreciate the feedback!
