Do you want to make your own brain a safe haven? We explore the idea that healing happens when we resonate with other human beings and with ourselves. In this replay from a popular show recorded in January 2021, our guest neuroscience educator Sarah Peyton talks about how our inner voice is part of our default mode network, the automatic part of the brain that is formed by our experiences, and about how we typically model our own thoughts after our parents' mental habits. We talk about inner voices and how we can tame them by offering them empathy guesses in the mode of NonViolent Communication (NVC). Sarah offers suggestions about using these techniques to help people working with their dreams. We take a call from Jaya from Hawaii who shares a series of recurring dreams about being trapped underwater by huge waves. Sarah works with Jaya helping her to have a sense of accompaniment with these big images and with the big feelings that come with them. We end with Sarah sharing that she has been incubating dreams of beauty. Sarah shares an interesting fact about traumatic and disorganized attachment starting from how our primary caregivers reacted to our emotions. Yes, people who are securely attached can find themselves in disorganized traumatic and violent situations, even with the best of intentions.
I couldn't think of a better way to kick off my new podcast than with a guest who embodies two of my favorite traits: self-compassion and courage. Author and educator Sarah Peyton is a gentle guide and a wise woman who has walked into the belly of the beast, taking her mindfulness practice into the prison systems. Together, we explore: how do we engage in earnest self-reflection without wallowing in shame? Why is it important to embrace unpleasant emotions such as anger? What is the connection between disgust and morality? Why does naming our emotions tame them? What is an “unconscious contract?” How can boundaries help with overwhelm? What is a “healthy no?” What distinguishes good stress from bad stress? And how can we develop the capacity to form secure attachments with others as adults, even if we lacked them as children?Sarah Peyton, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication, constellation facilitator and neuroscience educator, integrates brain science and the use of resonant language to heal trauma and nourish self-warmth with exquisite gentleness. In this episode, your host Karla Stephens-Tolstoy will take you along for her first resonance training & relational neuroscience session with Sarah, a neuroscience educator and author.Sarah's dedication to transforming our brains into kinder, cozier places to live began after struggling with depression herself. Before she knew the science, she found herself constantly battling a self-critical inner voice that left her feeling worthless, stupid, unlovable, and thinking it simply meant she was broken. In her early studies of nonviolent communication and neuroscience, she was amazed by how much sweetness and self-compassion was possible when you connect to your body sensations, feelings and needs. She then apprenticed for five years with Susan Skye (a psychologist, long-time NVC trainer, and creator of the groundbreaking New Depths Intensive Program) who pioneered the time-travel empathy process. Now Sarah offers online courses, events, private sessions, as well as meditations, videos and blog posts to help others make sense of their behaviours and get past the stigma that what we've seen as emotional difficulties or character defects are actually very normal reactions to relational, cultural and intergenerational trauma. She has also published three books, Your Resonant Self, Your Resonant Self Workbook, and Affirmations for Turbulent Times, and offers a Practitioner of Resonant Healing Training and Certification Program. Note special duration time of 2.5 hours Watch Sarah’s prior Awakin Call: Audio Recording (or read Call Transcript) “Commitment and contribution are very important and life-serving when they do not cost us everything. … We need everyone’s joy in order to be able to transform our world into a relational place, where we notice and act swiftly, both personally and systemically, to right wrongs, to change systems, and to save and restore our beautiful planet and ecosystems.” – Sarah Peyton Please join past Awakin Call guest Sarah Peyton for a special 2.5-hour New Year’s session and interactive workshop on releasing the contracts that block us from experiencing joy in our lives. “We use unconscious contracts to help us function in a world where we have not really been accompanied, and to make up for our brains not getting to grow the way that they were supposed to,” Sarah says. In this workshop, we will work to dissolve these contracts and celebrate the resonance skills that support the feeling and expression of joy. We will also look at what Sarah terms “false” Bodhisattva vows, and how to distinguish such false vows involving unhealthy self-sacrifice from those of joyful service. A long-time senior trainer of non-violent communication, Sarah’s work explores tools of relational neuroscience that help one turn inward with kindness, warmth, and curiosity and create opportunities for self-healing. In this workshop, Sarah will take us into the world of relational neuroscience, exploring how our brains, nervous systems, and bodies react to ourselves and others. Sarah’s workshop focuses on the question, “Have we made an unconscious contract with ourselves, such as a False Bodhisattva Vow, that sabotages our ability for healthy self-care?” Sarah will show us how we can use resonant-language practice, meditations, and journaling as healing strategies to uncover and rewrite these contracts: How trauma can cause us to loyally be carrying out unconscious sacred vows that we undertook at a younger age to protect ourselves or others; How we sometimes carry out these vows without regard to the cost to ourselves and others; How we can check to see if we are ready to release the vow and, if so, how to do so. For most of her own life, Sarah struggled with brutal depression … deadening, heavy sadness that made it hard to muster the energy to take a shower or even brush her teeth. She came to this work because she needed to heal. Sarah has now published three books: Your Resonant Self: Guided Meditations and Exercises to Engage Your Brain’s Capacity for Healing (2017), Your Resonant Self Workbook; From Self-sabotage to Self-care (2021), and Affirmations for Turbulent Times (2021). She teaches and speaks internationally about the ways that relationship and language transform the brain, and how they prevent and heal trauma. By applying complex neuroscience concepts to real life – with stories, role plays of research, meditations, and engaging dialogues – participants leave Sarah’s presentations with more wisdom and self-compassion, often making sense to themselves for the first time. In these challenging and polarized times, please join this gifted 2.5-hour workshop for our Awakin Calls Community, in order to work with Sarah to deepen joy and sense of joyful service!

Through her own experiences with depression and trauma and studying the brain for years, Sarah's been able to not only understand how relational trauma and your environment can have a lasting effect on you but she's been able to heal herself and help others through her speaking engagements, books and online courses helping people transform their brain into a kinder, cozier place to live. Traumas we experience in the early part of our life can become fear and anxiety we carry with us into our adult lives. But, patterns and behaviors that once served as successful coping strategies can sabotage our intimate relationships with others and more importantly with ourselves. To explore the mechanisms of change afforded to us by neuroplasticity and intuition, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors who share the knowledge that life transformations are possible through energy activation. Sarah Peyton is a neuroscience educator who teaches about the impact of childhood trauma on our brains and how we can transform self-sabotaging patterns that carry on into our adult lives. She shares examples from her book, Your Resonant Self Workbook, about how every person can tame their inner critic and change their life. Melanie Dean is a psychologist and educator who describes the quantum physics of healing and how people can get what they want by becoming in tune with their power. She describes the process of energy activation and key learnings from her book, The Hidden Power of Emotions: How to Activate Your Energy Field and Transform Your Life.
