We started this podcast to shed light on all parenting experiences. Sometimes, these conversations are really difficult. The murder of George Floyd has sparked the deeply rooted issue of racism we have in this country—and around the world. We recognize we are, by no means, professionals on this topic; we strongly feel that we needed to create a space to bring awareness and emphasize the importance of this ongoing injustice. Within the last two weeks, we have seen direct effects of the different populations throughout the world who have responded to this hate crime. It has been a time of reflection and Black voices are being amplified. This has forced us to ponder and re-define what we have been taught by society and our personal upbringings. Join us as we chat about how we are educating ourselves in becoming better allies to the Black community. In the midst of what our entire world is going through, Celeste and Magen have found some light through it all. They recently sat down (virtually and in their own homes, of course) with Aileen and Felicia, two best friends of 33+ years, who created the website, Persistiny, and later created the app, Tend, to supplement the site. Two stay-at-home moms, Aileen and Felicia constantly felt judged and disconnected from most when they were asked what they do. As if "I'm a stay-at-home mom" wasn't a good enough answer for people, Aileen and Felicia wanted to make other women feel valued and appreciated that their work as a SAHM is valuable. They also wanted to translate the hard work SAHMs face on a daily basis to that of skills that can be used in the corporate world when they decided to go back to work outside of the home. This is where Persistiny and Tend were born. Aileen and Felicia provided Celeste and Magen with plenty of laughs during their chat because everything they said were extremely relatable to the parenting world, especially being a mom. Being mindful is one way to reduce the stress of being a parent and practicing mindfulness means paying attention to what’s happening in the moment and accepting those experiences and feelings without judgment. We wanted to dive a bit further into this topic on tonight’s episode because we find it’s helpful for us while we parent our kids and it seems to have a positive effect on them, too! It helps us to listen to our children with our full attention, accept them – and ourselves – without judgement (or try to anyway!), validate our children’s feelings and respond accordingly, manage our own feelings and reactions, and show compassion for ourselves and our children.
