    15. Healing a Complicated Mother-Daughter Relationship After Loss, Trauma Bonds, Guilt, & Grace with Karen Spiers

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2026 63:26

In this profoundly honest and deeply relatable episode, Nicole sits down with Karen to unpack the complexities of grieving a mother with whom they shared a loving—yet challenging—relationship. This is a conversation for every daughter who is navigating the duality of intense love and deep-seated trauma.Karen shares the story of her feisty Irish mother, Pat (Eithne), a woman who found 39 years of sobriety but never let go of the guilt she carried over her past struggles with alcoholism and depression. The two explore the painful journey of healing a fractured mother-daughter relationship, from the anger and lost trust of teenage years to the eventual reconciliation and fierce bond they forged before Pat's death.Nicole and Karen dive deep into:The Power of Acceptance: Moving past the desire for your mother to be who you wanted her to be, and instead finding peace by meeting her where she was.Understanding Trauma Bonds: An explanation of why the grief over a complicated relationship can feel so uniquely excruciating, amplifying childhood trauma and leaving you feeling "alone on an island".The Anger of Loss: Processing the intense anger that can arise when a parent is lost to an illness tied to choices they made, and the journey to forgiving yourself for being angry.Redefining Forgiveness: Karen's powerful perspective that freedom comes not necessarily through the social construct of "forgiveness," but through "reconciling" with what happened and refusing to let past actions impact your self-belief.Living in the Love Left Behind: How to find comfort and connection in a world that feels broken, channeling the life-long wisdom of a mother who taught that "We are in the grace and love of an unknown power".This episode is a must-listen for mothers who are doing the difficult work of unpacking generational trauma (even the "ugly feelings") and choosing to evolve through grief, rather than being diminished by it.If you've struggled to mourn a mother whose relationship was complicated, this episode offers a needed space of understanding, grace, and permission to feel it all.

EPISODE OVERVIEWThis episode is a masterclass in integration. Heather describes herself as a "well-integrated personal and professional human," a phrase that encapsulates the years of showing up for hard conversations, choosing love over being right, and allowing grief to evolve her. Heather began her heart-led journey 13 years ago, long before her parents became ill, because she wanted to show up better for her family. This early investment meant she could be present with her parents in their final years in a way that brings her deep peace. The conversation explores navigating profound ideological differences with her father, receiving her mother's hardest moments with compassion, grief as an ongoing practice, and the signs and symbols (owls, loons, music) that confirm love's continuation after death.WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODEHow Heather's heart-led journey started 13 years ago because she wanted to show up better for her family. The story of navigating a profound values divide with her father and the conscious choice she made to love him for who he was.The weekly dinner practice with her mother, and what it meant to show up with intention every single time, even when it was hard. The moment her mother called her a bully, and how she transformed that wound into wisdom. What it looked like to hold her mother's final weeks with grace while also having somewhere to release the pain. Why "I am her and she is me" is a lived experience of continuation. The snowy white owl that appeared in her Toronto backyard the day her mom passed, and the loon that visits the cottage dock.Music as a portal to grief, release, and connection, and how Heather uses it to find her footing. The difference between holding onto who you were before loss and allowing yourself to evolve into who you're becoming. Her book Living by Heart and the collaborative chapter she wrote about her journey with inner guidance.A MOMENT THAT WILL STAY WITH YOU"We are forever changed. When Kelsey describes her mother, you can feel her mom flowing through her — in the way Kelsey gathers her community, loves her coffee, and shows up for the people around her.Kelsey lost her mom just over four years ago. About a year after, she felt an overwhelming pull toward motherhood — a pull she now believes was her mother's hand guiding her. Her son Freddy was born on Christmas Day, her mother's favorite holiday, and that timing cracked something open that had felt broken ever since her mom died.WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODEThe story of how Kelsey's son Freddy came into the world on Christmas Day — her mom's favorite holiday — and what that meant for healingWhat it felt like to be a motherless woman who also wasn't yet a mother, and how that quiet, dual identity created an internal darkness she hadn't expectedHer honest reflection on finding silver linings versus toxic positivity — and why searching for glimmers was the only thing that kept her goingHow her family each dealt with grief completely differently: her sister consumed by the past, her dad running toward the future, and Kelsey learning to live in the presentThe quote that changed everything: "When you're depressed, you live in the past. When you're anxious, you live in the future. But when you're at peace, you live in the present."How losing her mom shook Kelsey's belief that everything happens for a reason — and how she found her way back to that beliefWhat she has learned about love, expansion, and choosing to live with more of itA MOMENT THAT WILL STAY WITH YOU"I would do anything to have her back. But this is what it is — so how can we expand it into more?" Kelsey shows us that finding meaning in loss isn't about pretending loss is good. It's about refusing to let love stop growing.Resources:Save your spot for my free Masterclass: She's dead. In this raw and necessary solo episode, Nicole unpacks the unique and complex grief of losing a mother during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a shared experience of loss where the inability to say goodbye, hold a hand, or gather for a funeral created profound, lasting impacts.1Nicole discusses the unexpected public scrutiny and judgment she faced after sharing a viral video about the guilt of how she spent her mother's last holiday. She shares why this experience highlights a critical need to change the narrative around grief and challenge societal expectations.Key Takeaways from This Episode:The Weight of Forced Isolation: Explore the impact of not having a choice in skipping the rituals of grief, like funerals and community support, and how that absence affects the grieving process.Guilt vs. Shame: Using the insights of Brene Brown, Nicole breaks down the difference between guilt ("I did something wrong") and shame ("I am wrong") and how this confusion can prevent self-care and interfere with moving forward.Your Emotions Are Information, Not Identity: Learn the transformative truth that your feelings do not define your worth or who you are. Your emotions are simply information letting you know what needs to be moved from your body.Moving Complex Emotions: Grief is experienced every day, across life's joys and challenges. Some episodes ask big questions. This one just slows everything down.Episode 2 of Can't Call Your Mom is a love note — to you, to your inner child, and to your mom. Nicole opens with something simple and profound: grief needs to be witnessed. Not fixed. Not rushed. Witnessed. In this softer, more intimate episode, Nicole shares the healing practice of expression — why saying the things out loud, in a journal, in a voice note, or to a trusted witness, is one of the most powerful tools we have on this grief journey. She also does something deeply vulnerable: she calls her mom. She leaves her a voicemail — live, unscripted, from the heart — and invites you to do the same. This episode is permission. Permission to slow down. To say the things you are still carrying. To let yourself be seen — not as someone who has it figured out, but as someone who loved deeply and is still loving through the loss. Why grief needs witnesses — not solutions — and how to ask for that from the people you trustThe power of expression: journaling, voice notes, and verbally processing your grief as a tool for healingNicole's story of standing in line at Life Labs alone during fertility testing — and the moment her mom's name was calledThe complicated experience of receiving signs from the other side — and why those moments can be both comforting and heartbreaking, especially in the early yearsNicole's live, unscripted voicemail to her mom — raw, real, and full of loveWhat it means to be a generational cycle breaker — and how grief is teaching her family to do love differentlyThe invitation: what do you need to say to your mom that you haven't yet?The closing reminder: you are not failing. Your heart is healing."Grief doesn't need an audience — but it does get lighter when we witness it and hold it together. Those two powerful words: me too. I feel that. You're not alone in this. That's when healing happens." — Nicole WestonIf there are things you wish you could still say to your mom, Nicole invites you to say them anyway. Write them in a journal. Record a voice note in your notes app. Say them out loud in the car. Let the words exist somewhere — because sometimes the most healing thing we can do is say them, even now.If you're open to sharing, send Nicole a voice note. She may read or play it in a future episode. Let's talk about permission to evolve in motherhood with Kelley Oswin

Today I am sharing one of the most popular episodes on my podcasts. The evolution of motherhood. Kelley and I dive into the evolving roles of motherhood and how mothers are essentially our first “life coach”. We talk about the importance of letting go of guilt and creating space for gentleness so we can ask for help and be fully present for our children. Kelley shares her story from the early days of being a mother and shares all the ‘realness'. Kelley believes her story can help redefine motherhood, “because it is all about how we can use our own inner healing as a pathway to motherhood. That we can allow ourselves to move through guilt, shame, insecurities by further exploring the roots of those challenges in a way that helps us heal them. I'm also very big on releasing the “right” and “wrong” of motherhood and to explore motherhood as everyone's “right” journey and that our children do indeed choose us as a way for us to move through our own Self and to become who our children need us to be for them and their healing. It is about releasing self judgement and moving to unconditional love.” Facebook: www.facebook.com/avalonempowerment Instagram: www.instagram.com/avalonempowerment Website: www.avalonempowerment.com Special book for listeners: www.evolvednlpbook.com Disclaimer: The information, opinions, recommendations and content presented in this podcast are for general information purposes only, and because each person is unique please consult your healthcare professional for any medical related questions. So I deeply believe that we can't continue to only practice positive thinking to ‘manifest' what we desire. I believe the industry has left out a very important step in manifestation. Life is a journey of both suffering and joy. The problem is no one really talks about how to navigate the suffering. We mostly suffer in silence. But why? I think the toxic positivity mindset is one we can SHIFT now. This can allow for more realness in relationships so we can have the supports in place for when life gets hard, because it will. Today I am sharing with you how and why I am bridging the gap between being a mom and a business owner. As a business owner, entrepreneur, there are programs, groups and Masterminds you can join to be an entrepreneur. If you are also a mother, there are groups you can join to be a mom. I haven't found a space for women to be both. For me it's bridging the gap and making a space for you to exist as you are in both business and motherhood because you are who you are. I think that there's a lot of damage that has been done when we have to separate our values or separate certain sides of ourselves. We leave a lot on the table when we can't show up fully as we are. So honoured to sit with Colleen and talk all things motherhood, toddlers, second babies, relationships and body confidence all mixed in with redefining entrepreneurship as a mother during the pandemic. We have a beautiful history together and I am so honoured to dive into our experiences as entrepreneurial mothers trained in NLP. Colleen shared she wakes up “every day with the mindset and choice to redefine what it means to be a mother and entrepreneur in a pandemic.” This mindset we both agreed is how we can practice resiliency. Permission to practice self-compassion and love during the most unpredictable time of our lives. Colleen has been a top-earning salesperson in the Insurance, Alternative Investments, Private Lending, and Mortgage space for many years. She has been specializing in entrepreneurs, business owners and their financial picture since the beginning of her career. It always seemed like a natural fit for her as an entrepreneur herself. Colleen found success at a young age by pouring herself into every sales lecture, entrepreneurial seminar, and Neuro-Linguistic Programing course possible. But learning these techniques was only the first step. Year over year, she put in the work to adapt and adopt countless strategies to perfect the formula of success and growth. Fast forward to now, she is a mother of four, two humans, two fur babies, a wife and a coach who has presented successful sales strategies and techniques to crowds of over 300 people as well as personal one-on-one coaching to help friends, family, and colleagues. What does it mean to you to be a good girl? Or a bad girl? I’m sharing with you how it has limited me in the past and what I do to break it. These labels have rules and in my experience these rules have limited my potential. In this episode I share my experience with these labels and why I believe we must deconstruct what they mean in our world for two reasons: Because my worth is not defined but these labels, I was born worthy and I am worthy of feeling and being who I desire to be without rules These labels can limit how I ask for help and how I support myself in business and motherhood Connect with Nicole: Book Exploration session: https://www.nicoleweston.ca/offers/LPM9t2ut/checkout Applications open now for my group program BECOMING. Today I sat down with Dimple and what a beautiful conversation we had. We talked about how her family utilized behavioural flexibility to adapt to the new life of 2020 and how she and her family thrived. Intentionally living and taking inspired action are just some of the ways Dimple lives an empowered life. She shared her story of Becoming and how she heals herself and pain. I am so honoured to share her story with you today. I use my story to teach women how to parent with love, respect and wisdom right from birth. I wrote my story in the book Simply...Woman: Stories from 30 Magnificent Women who have Risen Against the Odds. My mission is to create healthier, happier and empowered families by changing the paradigm of how we show up in our parenting, ensuring that each soul is given the opportunity to heal and live authentically from their highest self and potential. I had a traumatic childhood of abuse and health issues. By the time I was in my 30's, I lost my career due to fibromyalgia. I spent years healing so I could become a mother. I became a mother with conscious intention and felt better than ever. I want all moms to feel healed so that all kids have emotional regulation tools, self-worth, hold empowering beliefs and achieve optimal physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health right from childhood. I want to play a part in helping us raise a generation that doesn't require healing. I use nutrition, mindfulness, EFT/NLP and energy medicine to help women, kids and tweens heal what's holding them back from being the most empowered versions of themselves. Today I sat down with Karla to talk all about rage in motherhood. Karla shares her story and why we need to be talking more about our emotions so we can break down the walls that prevent us from connection. “I am a Mama to a toddler. I had every intention to give birth on my terms and raise my daughter without judgment, guilt and comparison. My experience was anything but that and this led me down a path of unfamiliar territory where I experienced extreme anxiety that ultimately led me to rage.” Karla shares “no one told me about postpartum rage and it wasn't until I was finally coming out of it that I recognized it was an actual thing happening to many mamas on a global scale.” Now Karla helps mama's go from postpartum rage to navigating motherhood with confidence and on their terms. She teaches mamas the tools she used to get to a place of understanding and compassion. “I teach them to stand in their power and get back to the joys of motherhood.” Mama on purpose is a Facebook group Karla created for postpartum mama's and new mama's of all stages that are struggling with Anger and Rage in motherhood. This space to help moms identify the triggers and give them the awareness to redefine the anger as information and get back to the joys of navigating motherhood on their terms. https://www.facebook.com/groups/3133936989967391/ Connect with Nicole: https://nicoleweston.ca/

Thank you Laura so much for sharing your journey. Today we talked about the impossible choices we make as mothers in business. Laura has a successful Crossfit gym in town and because of COVID Laura made the difficult choice to close her crossfit gym. She is a mom to a 3.5 year old and a 7 week old and as Laura shares she “it was an impossible choice but there is really only one choice to make”. Laura’s strength and optimism shines through our conversation. I know many mothers out there who are making impossible choices and today I want you to know you are not alone. I see you. Laura helps new and expecting moms reach their athletic and fitness goals by empowering them to understand their bodies and be intentional with their movement. “I want moms to understand what changes with their body are and are not “normal” postpartum, and how to find real support to ensure they are recovering properly. There is too much focus on “bouncing back” after baby that does both psychological and physiological damage - and I want to help women understand what is realistic and provide a reasonable road map to fitness”.
