The iconic Star Trek: Voyager episode "Tuvix" continues to spark ethical debates nearly 30 years after its original airing. In this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki dive deep into one of Star Trek's most morally complex stories, examining Captain Janeway's controversial decision to effectively end one life to restore two others. The hosts explore how the episode's unique twist on the classic trolley problem, where instead of choosing between strangers, the decision involves deeply personal relationships and crew dynamics. They discuss how Janeway's emotional connection to Tuvok and her responsibility as captain influenced her judgment. What role do emotions play in ethical decision-making? The hosts examine how the episode challenges the common practice of trying to divorce emotions from moral choices, particularly through the powerful performances of the cast and the way Tuvix's plea for his life forces the crew to confront their complicity through their silence.Other key topics discussed:The brilliant performance by Tom Wright as Tuvix and how he created a distinct character while incorporating elements of both Tuvok and NeelixHow modern TV storytelling might have handled this plot differentlyThe significance of the doctor's refusal to participate and Janeway's choice to perform the procedure herselfThe show's failure to address the emotional aftermath in subsequent episodesComparisons to other ethical dilemmas in Star Trek and science fictionThe hosts conclude that while they may disagree on whether Janeway made the right choice, the episode's enduring legacy lies in its ability to present a moral dilemma with no clear right answer – one that continues to challenge viewers and spark discussions decades after its original airing. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. This is your host, Ting Ting, from Las Vegas. Today, our guest is Genevive Walker. I first learned her name a few years ago when she stirred up a heated discussion on route names. This discussion quickly led to real actions within the climbing community to change inappropriate route names. I was thrilled that, through a mutual friend, I could invite her to talk about her life stories on the show.Genevive Walker is a professional rock climber, rock climbing guide, and active lifestyle model with a passion for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the outdoor industry. She began climbing in the Shawangunk Mountains in 2012, sparking her love for steep routes, roofs, and anything that requires kneebar trickery. After seven years in the sport, she started her career as a Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) certified by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). Being part of the first all-female SPI cohort in 2018 opened her eyes to the disparities and inequalities within the climbing industry and ignited her mission to build community and offer representation for BIPOC climbers. Genevive is an athlete for Mountain Hardwear, DMM, Sterling Rope, and Gnarly Nutrition. She was also an athlete on Race to Survive: Alaska along with climber Favia Dubyk.I had so much fun chatting with Genevive. In this episode, you can hear laughter from beginning to end. We talked about how Genevive found climbing and guiding, how her family views her current lifestyle, what kind of guiding excites her the most, and how she manages social media. We also touched on more serious topics such as fear and her battle with disordered eating. Now, please enjoy this delightful conversation with Genevive Walker.Things We Talked about:Before Genevive found climbingHow does Genevive's family views her current lifestyle?Climbing let Genevive find another way to enjoy lifeGenevive started as a trad climber because that was the only thing availableWhen did Genevive have the thought to become a guide?Took the first all Women's SPI course sponsored by the AMGA, Brown Girls Climb, and Flash FoxyKeep expectation low and keep surprise herselfThe guiding lifeLove to work with women and climbers of color and that's the reason she loves guidingGunks, current statusRoute name debate and a movement to change route namesIdentity as a climber, model, and guideExcitement led to more work opportunitiesEating disorderWanting to fit in?The social mediaMentorship with the ProTrackPartnership with Favia DubykFear Talk

Guided by Something Greater than Yourself with Rhonda PowellIn this episode of Phoenix Tales, Yuliana has the pleasure of interviewing Rhonda Powell, a leading attorney in the media landscape who has faced not one but two health crises that nearly took her life. As you will hear today, through these challenges Rhonda has emerged with a deeper focus on what is truly important in her life and she continues to be an inspiration to all.Rhonda shares her story of a condition called placenta accreta and the severe hemorrhaging she faced after giving birth to her youngest child. Despite being monitored closely, the event nearly took her life and the subsequent development of a pulmonary embolism only added to her trauma. However, from these struggles, Rhonda learned the importance of focusing on what truly matters in her life and making sure she stays on course, despite the obstacles that may come her way. She also reflects on the impact of her near-death experiences on her beliefs and sense of self. She explains how it has enhanced her sense of certainty in herself and her decisions, made her value time even more, and encouraged her to bond more fully with her children. Rhonda discusses her belief that her life is guided by something greater than herself and how this belief has provided a sense of hope and comfort in moments of darkness. Her words of wisdom, as shared here today, serve as testament to the power of faith and how it can help us persevere through even the most difficult of times and seemingly insurmountable challenges.Episode Highlights:Rhonda's health crisesThe significance of these events in Rhonda's life and how they have changed her.Managing life with a newborn and two other young children.Coming out of the hospital and the healing process.Rhonda's sense of certaintyValuing time and bonding with childrenBeing guided by something greater than herselfThe role of faith in providing comfort in moments of darknessThe importance of cultivating a relationship where children feel comfortable sharingBeing a lifelong companion for their childrenThe songs that resonate with Rhonda these daysQuotes:"And I really do believe that that experience changed the way that I viewed my life, changed the way that I viewed my family, and changed the way that I move forward in the world.""It just really crystallized the things and the people that are really important to you.""Keep yourself focused on the things that really matter to you and that you really value and care about.""I always had this very clear sense of my own process, my own conclusions, and just taking the road that I felt I should take.""Having the self-confidence and the trust that no one's going to know what's best for you better than you.""Let's make sure that you're pouring everything into these kids that you can pour in so that they know their mom.""My kids are really comfortable with me, and they feel like they can say anything to me without feeling judgment, without fear.""There is something greater than yourself guiding your life."“Maybe it's just about the moment that we're in right now as well, but I listen to Beyonce's ‘Freedom' a lot. I feel like it's a song that propels you forward, so I listen to that quite a bit. And I also listen to Nina Simone's ‘Feeling Good' quite a lot.”Links: Phoenix Tales Homepage Phoenix Tales on Instagram

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You'll recognize yourself in these true-life stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference their journeys have made. I'm your host, Diane Wyzga. Welcome back to Part 2 of the podcast interview with my guest, Sue Heatherington, Quiet Disruptor, author of the book Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting, and a catalyst for thinking pioneers, innovators and change-makers who joined us from her small valley in Swansea, Wales. We were talking about quiet disruptors when I asked Sue to assume you might have to work with or encounter someone who is not so agreeable to this notion of disrupting quietly; how would you suggest working with folks like that to get them to see the necessity of hopeful, quiet change? Let's hear what she has to say about this and so much more on creating change without shouting.Minutes 37:010:00 to 2:00 Intro2:00 to 4:15 Experience Over TellingQuestion: Let's assume you might have to work with or encounter someone who is not so agreeable to this notion of disrupting quietly, how would you suggest working with folks like that to get them to see the necessity of hopeful, quiet change? We cannot tell anyoneIf someone has a clear view about how change happens, telling them won't work because they won't listen to the idea that there's another wayGive them the experience of itWhen Sue is working with people: truly listening and enabling them to feel heardSue practices Killer Questions in her coaching practiceSue believes we enable others to experience what's there4:15 to 15:35 The Quiet Disruptors BlogQuestion: One of the ways I've noticed you doing that (enabling to experience) is your blog. Would you tell us a little bit more about that.2018 was the early exploration and growth of Quiet DisruptionNot a simple formula but letting it breathe and growSue realized she needed to begin writing The Manifesto was writtenSue committed on 9th September 2018 and wrote daily - has not stopped since that daySue's intention: (1) Only write what she knew was real and in the present; and, (2) being prepared to peel off the layers, share, be vulnerable and expose more of herselfThe blog post is usually written for the next morningSue has committed to publish - now what do I write?Content: walking the valley, noticing, thinking, observing, what is important, how to share itThe experiment in writing: being present, being real, not giving answers but provoking thought and with a surpriseAims of Sue's blog post writing: inspire, encourage, and provoke so the reader can thinkHost: Harvesting comes to mind as Sue walks through the valley: ideas, thoughts, images. The other is the reveal. After 3 decades in storytelling the experience is that the best tellers use a reveal, the invitation to vulnerability, to humanness, the story burns your bones. The world is in need of those narratives of depth. There is more here than you get at first blush; and if you are willing to go with me we can discover that together. Harvesting is a reflection of the 15 years Sue and (her husband) Steve have inhabited their valley; they know it quite well as home and base for creativityCOVID increased isolation for Sue; incoming and outgoing client work stoppedA gift of COVID has been immersion in the seasons to greater extent than previously experiencedWhat's different is the immersion in the living cycle of life and a different harvest, an awareness of our connectednessHarvest is also a deeper awareness that we “inter-are”. [Thich Nhat Hanh]Sue's awareness of our integratedness has an effect on creativity, personhood, writing, and offers hope, of meaning for existence15:35 to 21:05 Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without ShoutingThe unexpected gifts born of all the many challenges, suffering, turmoil still balances on hope. Who could have imagined there was good and hope to be experienced? Jane Goodall's newest book is hope. Suzanne Sinard's work on integrated forests as hope. And now Sue with the quality of hope. Question: is this notion of hope what gave rise to your book Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting OR, in the process of writing did you access hope? For Sue hope has always been a thread for her, but it has at times been pretty buriedDoing the work on the book, Quiet Disruptors, helped to bring the thread of hope nearer the surfacePart of that feeling of ties back to a prayer by Rob Bell: “I pray you are as honest with God as you are more and more open to your role in the ongoing creation of the world.” Host: “I just love that! It belongs on a billboard.”What struck Sue is the search for meaning that all of us have; Sue had completely lost sense of who she was, her contribution to the world, meaning, belonging, purposeThe Rob Bell prayer was the support as Sue created her work and writingWriting draws so much out of us it is our essential self and workWe craft from the essence of who we areAs more people recognized what Sue was saying she was also re-uniting with herselfSue's book is also a rallying cry for The Others to join in with their unique contribution. It is our job to use our voice, to be the change we want to see and being prepared to be change 21:05 to 31:05 The Process of Writing the Book I understood you to say at some time - correct me if I got these words upside down and backwards, “The book is the road & the practice.” Is that correct? Lets do it this way: tell us something about the process of writing this book.Sue wrote it 4 times over from start to finishPeople told Sue she had to write the book because everyone should know this Until Sue was clear what the book was there for, the process of drafting versions 1 thru 4 was the process of discovery - over a long time of edits and redraftingBy the 4th iteration Sue realized she was writing a book of advocacy: there are people in our midst we need to listen toListen (!) because these people are not shoutersSue's book is also for those who wish to develop their voice further; the last part of Sue's book is more like a handbook3 Key Points: (1) we cannot do change on our own and we need to belong; (2) calling herself a writer and peeling off the layers to expose one's true voice; and (3) finding the space/environments where Sue (and the rest of us) will flourishPartway through the writing process Sue and Steve changed churches because they realized they needed to change their space and belong with a different group of people Sue has greater clarity and permission about the environment to flourish and write wellSue (and the Host) does her best thinking while walkingThe challenge: a Quiet Disruptor can become isolated (the Host recognizes this intimately); so they must pay attention to the challenges of this way of being Question: How does a Quiet Disruptor go about inhabiting the role and do what they came to do without becoming invisible?Requires perseveranceRequires paying attention to what's going on insideSue is more attuned to when she is “drying up”, giving herself permission to play, seeking what she needs to flourishand saying “no” to the restSue asks, where do I need others and nourishment? Sue cites a favorite podcast, “On Being” and giving herself time to reading poetryQuiet Disruptors might find themselves on the edge; but the belonging will feed youTip: find and invest in nourishment and belonging CloseQuestion: As we begin to close, is there something that was left unsaid?I am here. I am now. This is joy.I am here. I am now. This is joy. Before I say thank you to Sue I want to mention that all social media links and connections to Sue Heatherington, her blog and her book, Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting will be posted in the Episode Notes. In Part I of this conversation with branding expert Melody Belotte of Melody Belotte Media, the significance of an organization's "personality" took center stage. The idea gets a in-depth treatment in this compelling continuation, including a meticulous breakdown of the traits that define brands in the mind of consumers. [1:31] Would You be Friends with Your Organization? As outlined in Part I, the result of a successfully managed branding strategy is to connect with your clientele on a personal level. In order to do this, customers and prospects should be able to clearly recognize themselves in the persona of your brand. Building a personality archetype such as "explorer" or "caregiver" in the public mind ascribes an element of emotion to what would otherwise be just another company. The easiest way to do this is to understand what your company offers, and decide what type of person would offer it.[3:02] Not So EasyHowever, some of the most successful instances of brand building extend beyond the core competencies of an organization. Belotte points to insurance titan GEICO as a prominent example, with their lighthearted, comedic outreach defining the company as much as the product it markets. This represents an especially inspired departure from the expected, as a issues such as car accident and home repair rarely inspire positive emotions. However, by standing as a separate entity, the cheeky GEICO brand has earned ample public goodwill.[8:28] Selling DreamsAs the old saying goes, "we don't buy the steak, we buy the sizzle." At the marketing level, companies do not sell their products, but the pleasing benefits of using them. A soap manufacturer does not market a combination of ingredients, but ideas such as beauty and freshness. Good health, popularity, and memories are other commonly marketed concepts, as people who value these will purchase them at any price. As a public facing organization, your most coveted product is always the opportunity for customers to indulge themselves.[9:56] Brand DefinitionThe hallmark of a well-considered branding initiative is the ability to build on a central idea. When you understand your brand and your market, your logo, your colors, and other distinguishing elements begin to make themselves apparent. Every element of a branding campaign should speak to what your business offers and who they hope to serve. Although this is certainly simpler for larger, more established businesses with loyal client bases, it offers wide latitude for uniqueness in developing businesses.[12:48] Melody Belotte, HerselfThe branding guru's approach to creating an image that sticks in the mind of prospects may be best expressed on her own website. Her About page speaks on her belief in the duality of her organizational brand and her personal brand, both of which have their own appeal. For example, although her company does not sell motorcycles, riding is a huge part of her life and customers can find commonality with her through her interest. In the end, branding is a way to stand out in a marketplace with ever more options...there are no small differences. 019 - The day I sat down to record this episode was a momentous one in the life of today's podcast guest. Richmond, Virginia-based Kristen Murray had just given notice that she'd be leaving her full-time job to focus on her rapidly growing pet photography business! As Dolly Parton sings in her classic hit "9 To 5," "There's a better life, and you dream about it, don't you?" In this episode, Kristen shares how she's making her dreams a reality, and the role that the Hair of the Dog Elevate program played in her readiness to make the transition to full-time pet photographer. What To Listen For: Why other people weren't taking her pet photography seriouslyWhat finally helped Kristen recognize and overcome her fearsWhy it's okay—even beneficial—to be nervous about making changesHow Elevate allowed her to stop asking permission, and to start trusting herselfThe crazy-fun niche that Kristen's carved out in her marketIf you have your own dreams of making pet photography more than a hobby, this is a great episode to listen to. I know you're trying to avoid infectious things right now, but I promise Kristen's contagious enthusiasm will make you feel better, not worse!
