Jonathan is the founder of Caliber Design and in this conversation we talk about the process of creativity and what it takes to create products as well as creating team culture and the components of strategy. We also focussed in on what it means to really understand the problem before you start to design a solution. We start with his childhood though and what he learned from growing up next to Rolleston Prison as a child and how he started his career at Tait Electronics before helping to design a variety of products. This is a great conversation showing a Christchurch based company growing and achieving a lot in the area of mechanical engineering. Website: https://www.caliberdesign.co.nz About the Life Chair: https://www.infact.co.nz/project/life-chair "Caliber Design was founded in the wake of two major events that had a profound impact on the New Zealand economy: the global financial crisis and the Canterbury earthquakes. During this challenging period, many businesses struggled to survive and the resulting uncertainty led to a reluctance to take on permanent staff. This left companies short-staffed and unable to take advantage of opportunities that arose. However, Jonathan Prince, Caliber's Founding Director, saw an opportunity in the midst of the chaos. He recognized that businesses needed project-based mechanical engineering resources, delivered on-demand and tailored to their specific needs. This knowledge led to the creation of Caliber in 2015, with a mission to provide exceptional project-based engineering services to businesses throughout New Zealand. Starting out with five engineers in 2015, Caliber has grown significantly and now boasts a team of over 50 highly skilled professionals. They work on secondment for clients across the country, delivering world-class mechanical engineering solutions. By providing a flexible and responsive approach to engineering services, Caliber has become a trusted partner to businesses across New Zealand."

Imagine if we electrified the country and ditched fossil fuels? It is a compelling vision of a world where Aotearoa New Zealand stands apart as an example that other counntries could then follow with major positive impact for the planet. And it is possible with the right policy settings in place. Mike Casey from Rewiring Aotearoa and I discuss this and a whole lot more in this wide ranging conversation - from his early days in Wellington to his entrepreneurial journey and how to get through the hard times, planting a 9,000+ cherry tree farm in Otago and then making it all electric with no fossil fuel vehicles, lessons along the way - we really cover a lot in this conversation. The Rewiring Aotearoa movement is producing quality research and information on moving from fossil fuels for the benefit of the climate and to save people money at the same time - it has been fun to be part of that journey as the lawyer who helped get it set up and registered as a charity and am still involved today providing legal support. So it was great to sit down with Mike to hear his stories. Shoutout to former guest on Seeds podcast Louise Aitken who first introduced us! Her interview is here. Rewiring Aotearoa website: https://www.rewiring.nz/ Some of the publications we mentioned are here: Investing in Tomorrow https://www.rewiring.nz/tomorrow Electric Homes report https://www.rewiring.nz/electric-homes-report "Rewiring Aotearoa represents everyday New Zealanders in the energy transition and is working to build an electrified future where every Kiwi saves money on energy bills, reduces their carbon emissions and has the resilience to keep their lights on and homes warm. Questions about what the Bible might have to say about the way we live and care for creation. Questions about how we can deeply connect with the world around us and each other. Questions about why the church seems so useless when it comes to caring for God's creation. And questions about how Māori and Pākehā can learn from each other, and grow together. So if you're keen - I'd love to invite you to come along on this crazy, beautiful, journey with me, Waiora Te Moni, and Dr Andrew Shepherd - as we explore Ngā Here - The Many Connections that exist between creation, the Bible and living in Aotearoa. Ngā Here - The Many Connections is a project funded by The Wilberforce Foundation. Produced by James Beck, with Creative Direction from the Revered Spanky Moore. Our Music was created by Chris William - check him out on Spotify. Artwork by Tepene Marsden.

A short reflection I hope helps one of you as we come to a time of rest and reflection and planning for the future. Braided rivers in New Zealand are unique as they change often, moving along in the same general direction, but never ever staying exactly the same. Trying to plan every aspect of your life means you'll miss out - to really see new opportunities, you have to be willing to also let directions shift, like a braided river, and go with where the water of new opportunities is flowing. https://theseeds.nz/articles/braided-river-reflection/

Community Aotearoa - Michelle Kitney of Volunteering New Zealand | Tūao Aotearoa, - Alex Stainer and Michelle Lombaard from the External Reporting Board - Jay Casey from Inland Revenue NZ Content for incorporated societies mentioned is over here: https://www.parryfield.com/home/blogs/resources-for-the-incorporated-societies-act-2022/ Thanks Michelle and Katie for hosting! Description of the session: “Big changes have come into effect for Incorporated Societies and mean you have to take action by April 2026 to continue operating as an Incorporated Society. You will need to re-register by April 2026 and comply with new financial reporting requirements. There is a lot of information out there, and many of you will already have begun the re-registration process. We also know that it can be tricky to know what you need to do and when, and if this even applies to you. Hui E! and Volunteering New Zealand are bringing those in the know to you at this webinar to answer your questions. Katie and Michelle will be joined by Steven Moe (partner at Parry Field lawyers and 20 years experience in this area), XRB (the Crown Entity that set the financial reporting standards) and IRD. Come along if you are in a leadership or governance role in an Incorporated Society, or if you just want to find out more." For more content visit www.theseeds.nz

I got the chance to sit down with Rabble (Evan Henshaw-Plath) who was there at the start as the first employee of the company that created Twitter. We talk about that but begin with the early days in Northern California growing up as a child of hippies and counterculture thought that and being immersed in that as a child. We also talk about computers back when that was a new tech, the internet and what social movements can use technology for, including current project Nos and also Causes. We also talk about the Edmund Hillary Fellowship which we are both part of. This was a fascinating conversation and if you enjoy it why not check out the 400+ others in earlier episodes of seeds which is trying to create a database of life stories that we can all learn from. How do our choices when shopping impact the planet? Really enjoyed this conversation with Stine Smith about her entrepreneurial journey as a co-founder of Good Change which has a focus on cleaning products that are better for us and the earth. But we start hearing about her childhood in Denmark, what she learned as a 15 year old on exchange in America, her international sales and management consulting career in Europe, America and the Middle East and how she came to Aotearoa New Zealand and started the business. A highlight is our focussing in on doing a business with a cofounder rather than on your own and what it takes to make that work well - identifying each of your skills and trusting each other to play to those. I had a great conversation with Jono Brent about his life story - he was really open about things he has been through and I enjoyed learning about his journey. In this session we hear from Shambueel Eaqub on the state of the economy and the past, present and future - we end talking about Love, so it was pretty wide ranging! We also looked at the Orbviz way of presenting date, worth looking at this on the budget as an example https://nzbudget-expenditure.orbviz.com/public/root We took a sense of the economic pulse through looking at data and considering the wider context of government in the economy, budgets, the constraints and levers that can be used and how this affects us all. This was a raw and honest conversation with Rico Gomez about his life story and what has led him to founding Neurofit. I really enjoyed the challenges he lays out for us all to think about and consider our true source of value, finding purpose and taking care of ourselves. We also talk about mental health, stress, taking care of ourselves, behaviour, holistic views of oursevles, the role of spirituality and moving forward positively. Check out the resources and information they provide over here: https://neurofit.co.nz/#392bca3 Their mission: "Everything we do, we do to equip! We do not create co-dependency, but instead, provide service that produces real results. We believe every person has the ability to be great and our mission is to remove the barriers that hinder. Helping people get unstuck from the mental mess is our main focus, with the intention that every person will feel empowered to be exactly who they were made to be." Simone Woodland joined me for episode 397 to talk about her life and the Tākaka Cohousing Project (Tākaka Cohousing | Golden Bay (takakacohousing.co.nz)) which is an amazing example of an innovative project that combines both housing + community + nature + regeneration. I've been involved with providing legal support since this project began several years ago. In this interview we talk about Simone's background and origins in the UK, her becoming an architect, working on social enterprises there and then moving to Aotearoa New Zealand and how she decided to come here. The project describes values like this: “As a purpose driven housing developer we are committed to supporting the health of the whenua and community through regenerative and replicable cohousing models. Our team are committed to the values of kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga and courage.” Community & Privacy: Privacy is important to us. We have thoughtful designed home layouts that create privacy between the homes and gardens for peace and tranquility. The shared spaces are designed for community events, connection and collective food growing. Shared Resources: Shared resources offer a range of benefits, contributing to sustainability, affordability and community wellbeing. By sharing tools, equipment, and facilities, we are building an efficient system that provides more equality and support to our residents. Sustainable Design: To create a safe space for our children to play, cohousing neighbourhoods choose to keep the cars to the outside. This allows for a park like setting with more space for growing food, gardens, play spaces and the community to meet and interact.
