Sue Barker: charity lawyer on the calls for Destiny Church to lose charity status

There's been growing debate concerning the status - and tax exemptions - of charitable groups. Followers of Destiny Church stormed an Auckland library to protest a drag storytime event and disrupted a rainbow parade last weekend, prompting calls to evaluate their status. Many have suggested Destiny Church's charity status should be revoked, with Labour's Phil Twyford writing to the Charities Regulator to get them struck off. Charity lawyer Sue Barker says the current Charities Act is not fit for purpose. "The original Charities Bill that went through Parliament in 2004 was widely regarded to be fundamentally flawed - and it was almost completely rewritten at the select committee stage and rushed through under urgency without any proper consultation." I'm joined by a literal legend in this week's Monday Mile – the one and only Sue Barker. She's an ex-professional tennis player turned world class sports broadcaster, best known for her coverage of Wimbledon, the Olympics and Question of Sport. She's a huge role model for me, and I'm so proud to call her a friend. Sue tells me the story of how she broke down barriers to succeed in the male-dominated field of sports broadcasting, landing several prestigious presenting roles. She's synonymous with Wimbledon, and she returned to Centre Court just weeks ago to say an emotional farewell to Andy Murray, whose final professional matches take place this week.  Her rundown of his career is a fascinating insight from someone who had a front row view of it all. With her legacy cemented, she's keen to see others thrive in the positions where she made her name – including me! She's helped me immensely, and I'm so happy to be able to give you all a taste of her wisdom too. Listen now on podcast platforms and watch on YouTube

The Andy Murray Wimbledon farewell ceremony has happened and boy was it emotional. There wasn't a dry eye in Centre Court as Jamie Murray and Andy Murray bowed out in the doubles first round. After the contest Sue Barker returned for one last time to lead a tribute to Andy Murray that featured Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Joel asked Andy what could be his final ever press conference question at Wimbledon and Andy reflected on this tribute verses THAT ceremony at the Australian Open in 2019.Elsewhere Novak Djokovic's movement was tested and the knee injury looked bothersome but he survived in four sets against Jacob Fearnley. Cam Norrie won the battle of the Brits and knocked out British number 1 Jack Draper and Katie Boulter was also upset by Harriet Dart on No.1 Court in a final set tiebreak. In lighter moments we hear from Danielle Collins who did a 'bag check in press' (wear your SPF) and Taylor Fritz who aired out his on court drama with Arthur Rinderknech when he told him to have a "safe flight home" after the infamous Roland Garros shushing incident of 2023.They look ahead to a wet weather day on day 5 of the Championships and make predictions as to who will make it to R4 all before catching an 11pm Caroline Wozniacki press conference to end the day.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. A couple of weeks ago I took a call. I didn't recognise the number, but I took the call anyway and I very quickly regretted that I had done so.   The caller was a very nicely spoken man who, after pleasantries were exchanged, wanted to know why I had stopped giving to a charity I had previously supported. I agreed that yes, I had supported the charity for a very long time, and yes, I understood the good work it was doing, and yes, I absolutely knew that times were tough - in fact, that was the reason my monthly debit had stopped. My circumstances had changed, and times were tough.   That wasn't good enough for my caller. No. I would have picked up the cue, yes my circumstances have changed and yep, I'm sorry. No, they drilled down. Before I came to my senses and stopped responding to what were quite personal questions, I'd blurted out that the reason my home address was no longer the same was because I'd separated from my husband and we sold the house and I bought a house with the children and we had a big mortgage, blah de blah, and I suddenly found myself pouring out my life story because I was ashamed that I was no longer giving to the charity. And it was a kind of emotional blackmail that this charity worker was engaged in. I just about gave them an access code to my accounts so he could see. “There are still some charities you support, why those?” Honestly, I could have hung up, but all I had to give him was time, so I gave him that, and laying myself bare as a form of apology.   I was listening to Sue Barker this morning talking about the struggles StarJam is facing, and I wonder just how many of you have had these difficult conversations with the charity workers who are putting the acid on those who used to give and who are no longer giving or just cold calling. I love StarJam and the work it does. I've been there along to a number of StarJam gala events, and they are professional, and they are fun, and they are incredibly important for the young people who are performing.   One of the best interviews I've ever seen conducted was a young man who has Down Syndrome, who was impeccably dressed in black tie, who was well prepared, well researched and interviewed the entertainer, Michael Barrymore when it first come out to New Zealand. He was brilliant, asked really tough questions, the sort of questions no other interviewer would dare ask. He was brilliant. I've really enjoyed the nights I've spent at StarJam and the work they do is really, really important. But man, there are a lot of charities, all of whom are doing really worthwhile work but for many of us, circumstances have changed.   And while Sue Barker told Mike Hosking that look, there are 600,000 companies and up to 500,000 trusts, so 28,000 is not a surplus of charities. I disagree. 28,000 charities is a lot of charities and a lot of them are niche charities. So, there's a lot of cancer charities because not all cancer charities cover a particular family's need or a particular individual's need.   So, we have 28 thousand registered charities, up from 22,000 six years ago. Twice the number of Australia and three times the number of the United Kingdom per capita. And there are those within the charity sector who think that there should be a joining up of some of the smaller charities with a with a mutual interest, and that would cut costs and make them more efficient. Merging, or at least collaborating when you have a shared interest.   The charity sector has an annual total income of more than $21 billion, and it's supported by more than 217,000 volunteers and more than 145,000 full-time staff. That is a lot of people. And who is sustaining that? You and me? We're doing that because New Zealanders are not mean. It doesn't matter how small your income; you could be on a pension or a benefit or a lowly paid critical worker and you will give. And that's right up to the to the wealthy philanthropists who give a lot, but most New Zealanders give. Individual giving in 2019 was $2.4 billion.   But again, you know, these are unusual times. Families are cutting back on their own costs, their own families are going without. And charities have to accept that all the haranguing of people, forcing them to explain themselves, all the narration of sob stories, is not going to get blood out of a stone. If the money is not there, it is not there, and charities have to understand that too. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New charities law little more than 'tweaks' say critics

A promised shakeup to the law governing charities is being criticised as a missed opportunity to make real changes and has instead delivered additional layers of complication. The Charities Amendment Act was passed in late June, with most of its provisions coming into force from early October. The history to the changes sought by the sector is long and complicated, and it was taken up by Labour in 2017 when it promised to review how the 2005 Charities Act was working. The government says the just-passed Charities Amendment Act will "modernise" the sector, cut red tape - particularly for smaller charities - and help them get on with their mahi. But those working with charities say that's not what it delivers - and instead of seizing the chance to boost charities' independence, it's helping to maintain a status quo where they're treated as little more than a delivery vehicle for government social services. Susie speaks to Andrew Barnes founder of trustee company Perpetual Guardian, which operates a Foundation and also owns the Givealittle crowdfunding site. She also speaks to Sue Barker, a lawyer who specialises in charities and public tax law and who has been following the progression of this legislation extremely closely.

Built from the ground up by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, Resilient Lady is a mid-size ship weighing 110,000 gross tons like her sister ships in the fleet: Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady.Built in the Sestri Ponente shipyard in Genoa, Resilient Lady marks the brand's third completed vessel in the span of just two years, a notable accomplishment for any brand, and an even taller task for a new company that launched just last year. On May 14, 2023, Resilient Lady will embark on her MerMaiden voyage around the Greek Isles, making stops in Santorini, Rhodes, Bodrum and Mykonos before returning to her homeport in Piraeus, Athens. The ship will sail two, eight-night itineraries including the “Greek Island Glow” with the aforementioned route, and the “Adriatic Sea and Greek Gems,” complete with calls in the beautiful cities of Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Corfu. After her inaugural season in the Med, Resilient Lady will embark on a 44-night repositioning voyage, heading Down Under for a winter season in Australia and New Zealand. Starting Oct. 22, 2023, the ship will depart Athens before stopping in some of the most exotic locales the brand has yet to introduce including Cairo, Dubai, Bali, Mumbai, Phuket and Singapore. She'll finally arrive in Sydney on Dec. 4, 2023 for a series of celebrations, media sneak peeks and more.In addition to her sleek cabin interiors, Resilient Lady will feature the brand's six, Michelin-inspired restaurants, 20+ eateries, a curated line-up of live entertainment, design-forward bars, oceanside hangout retreats and incredible service. Perfectly integrating into a unique experience on the ocean, Virgin Voyages has developed a one-of-a-kind vacation being recognized by Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveller and US News & World Report. Most recently, the line received three industry awards from Cruise Critic including the award for best dining, and received its most coveted award for Best New Ship in 2021 for Scarlet Lady.MSC welcomes 21st ship to the fleet! On the evening of 7 December, the world's third largest and fastest growing cruise brand MSC Cruises welcomed MSC Seascape to its fleet of innovative ships. The line's newest flagship was officially named at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City in recognition of the addition of New York as a new homeport in April 2023. The event was attended by more than 3,000 guests including VIPs, key travel partners and media as well as top management from the entire Cruise Division of the company and its parent MSC Group. One of the highlights of the traditional maritime ceremony was a stunning performance from international singer-songwriter Matteo Bocelli, hot off the heels of his performance at the naming ceremony of MSC World Europa last month.Godmother of the MSC Cruises fleet and international movie icon Sophia Loren blessed the ship virtually whilst Alexa Aponte-Vago, daughter of MSC Group's founder and executive chairman Gianluigi Aponte, performed the traditional cutting of the ribbon to officially name the ship. Loren shared her good luck wishes for the new ship and commented: “One of the highlights of the past 20 years has been to officiate the christening of MSC Cruises fleet not only because the Apontes have become like family to me but also because MSC has always occupied a special place in my heart.  Let me bless the MSC Seascape, her great crew and all her passengers.”Following the ceremony, the guests enjoyed a gourmet gala dinner and standout performance by international Grammy Award winner singer/songwriter Ne-Yo.MSC Seascape becomes the 21st ship in the MSC Cruises fleet and the second ship to be launched in less than one month after MSC World Europa launched in November. She will be closely followed by the line's second LNG-powered vessel MSC Euribia, due to come into service in June 2023.Carnival Celebration debuts expanded youth programmeCarnival Celebration is introducing an expanded youth program including new enrichment activities for children, teens and families, as well as an update to Carnival's popular Dr. Seuss Bookville. A charities law expert says it's advisable charities have a donations policy online. Horse breeder Mark Chittick says he was told Starship Children's Hospital couldn't accept his offer of $570,000 dollars, because it was associated with horse racing. The Starship Foundation says it's unable to accept all donations due to existing partnership obligations. Sue Barker is a television presenter and former professional tennis player. She presented the BBC's Wimbledon coverage for nearly three decades, before stepping down this year, when she received a standing ovation. Sue was born in Devon in 1956, and was educated at the Marist Convent School where she had a reputation for being naughty – until her PE teacher, Mrs Chadwick, diverted her energy into tennis. Aged 11 she was selected for training by the local tennis coach Arthur Roberts, who had already guided players to Grand Slam titles. Sue started playing – and winning – junior tournaments. She turned professional at 17, and moved to the US, joining a new women's tour set up by Billie Jean King. During her career, she reached the ranking of World No. 3, playing and defeating her contemporaries, including Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Evonne Goolagong and Virginia Wade. Her biggest win came at the French Open in 1976 where, aged 20, she took her first – and only – Grand Slam title. Her biggest disappointment came at Wimbledon the following year, when she lost in the semi-final, despite being the clear favourite. Plagued by injuries, she retired from tennis in 1985. She began commentating on Australia's Channel 7, before moving to BskyB in the UK, and then joining the BBC in 1993. She has hosted Wimbledon, Grandstand, the Summer and Winter Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and A Question of Sport. When she announced her retirement from TV, her idol Billie Jean King called her the GOAT, the ‘greatest of all time'. Miss Marple is one of the classic heroines of crime fiction. Quick-witted, devilishly observant and with a keen sense of justice, Jane Marple has delighted readers since she first appeared in a series of short stories by Agatha Christie in 1927. But now, almost a century later, she is being given a new lease of life in a collection of short stories penned by twelve of today's most famous crime writers, due out next year. Queen of crime fiction Val McDermid joins Emma to talk about writing one of the stories, and why she believes an elderly spinster makes for the perfect super-sleuth. A Question of Sport is the world's longest TV sports quiz - it first appeared on our TV screens way back in 1970 and has clocked up 1,295 episodes - but it took until Friday night for Sam Quek to make history as the first ever female team captain. The 2016 Olympic Gold winning hockey player features in the new revamped BBC series alongside other team captain former rugby player Ugo Monye. While Sam joins the programme, the long running host and former tennis player Sue Barker has been replaced by the comedian and TV presenter Paddy McGuiness. Sam Quek joins Emma. The Japanese Prime Minister has announced he is standing down. His popularity was at an all time low, and because of Covid many in Japan are very unhappy that the Olympics and Paralympics were held there. The Prime Minister took over from Shinzo Abe, who introduced a policy called Womeneconomics. This was a five year plan which ended last year, and aimed to get more women into the workforce and up the career ladder. Abe vowed to make women 'shine', and set a goal for them to hold 30% percent of leadership positions by 2020. So why did this deadline quietly pass without getting close to its target? Emma speaks to Kathy Matsui, who coined the term 'Womenomics' in 1999 and to Cynthia Usui - author of the Japanese book Eight Things Full-Time Housewives Should do Before Entering the Workforce. We delve into the commodification and debasement of the beautiful game in recent years. Given Spurs were the original 'floater' team way back in the 1980s, is the marketisation of the game all that recent phenomena? A lengthy discussion on racism, misogyny, and classism in football and across society more widely ensues, leading us to one very powerful conclusion - fuck Sue Barker. Pod presenters Whitaker and Law have their say about a deeply uncomfortable few days which culminated in Nastase being banned from ITF events pending an investigation, and the bizarre comments of Sharapova’s agent Max Eisenbud.... Johanna Konta won the first WTA title of her career, and the biggest by any British woman in 30 years after defeating Venus Williams in a nerve-shredding three-set final in Stanford.  Konta, who a year ago was ranked outside the World’s Top 100 and playing ITF tournaments, is now World No.14 and currently ninth in the race to the WTA finals in Singapore. According to The Tennis Podcast team, who convened after the final to discuss her rise, she is increasingly looking like a Top Ten player.  Following her 6-4, 6-2 win over Dominika Cibulkova in the semifinal, Konta raced to a 7-5, 4-1, double-break lead over Williams, and looked to be cruising to the title. But she wobbled with the finish line in sight, and Williams roared back to take the set 7-5 and force a decider. After regrouping at the end of set 2, Konta won the third 6-2 to become the first British woman since Sue Barker in 1977 to win the title.  Podcast presenters David Law (BBC 5 Live) and Catherine Whitaker... In 1977, Britain's Sue Barker stood on the brink of reaching the Wimbledon final for the first time. She had won the French Open the previous year, beaten her semifinal opponent on each of their meetings that year, and was already thinking about a potential final against Chris Evert or Virginia Wade. And then she lost. Now the presenter of BBC Television's Wimbledon coverage, Sue talks to the Tennis Podcast about an experience from which she says she never recovered.  In Episode 30, we also discuss the return of Rafael Nadal, and the rise of Horacio Zeballos, while trying to assess whether this is the start of his rise to the top, or the peak of his career.
