Nudge has influenced politicians around the World. There are “Nudge Units” in government in the UK, US, Germany, Japan, and even Canada. "We are being furtively nudged, on an unprecedented scale, to obey the doctrines of the world's elite."—Dr Gary Sidley We welcome to the programme Dr Gary Sidley—a former NHS Consultant Clinical Psychologist—for an interview on the UK government's morally questionable use of "nudge" techniques during the Covid Event, the extent to which Nudge Theory is being employed more generally by government, and the serious ethical questions entailed. (Dr Sidley is a freelance writer, trainer, and blogger, who in 2013 retired as a Professional Lead/Consultant Clinical Psychologist after 33 continuous years in the NHS working in psychiatric nursing and clinical psychology. In early 2020 he became extremely concerned about the government's response to the ‘coronavirus crisis', and began writing on the subject at his well-known Coronababble blog. Gary is a member of the Health Advisory & Recovery Team (HART) and the Smile Free campaign to lift all mask mandates. He is currently leading on a research project into the UK's deployment of behavioural science strategies during the Covid Event, and the ethical implications of the state using these methods on its own people.) Today we are looking at plastic bottle Deposit Return Schemes and, in particular, a scheme due to be introduced in the UK in the next couple of years. The idea is to reduce the millions of plastic bottles a day that go un-recycled, by getting consumers to pay a little extra for a drink. They can then claim that extra payment back if they return the bottle for recycling. Deposit return schemes are nothing new, they have been around in various forms for decades. So, you might ask why it is taking the UK so long to get this off the ground. But what does the drinks industry make of the scheme? And will this really persuade consumers to change their recycling habits? Guests: Gavin Partington, Director General, British Soft Drinks Association Julian Hunt, Vice President of Public Affairs, Communications & Sustainability for GB, and Northern Europe, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners.

This week, we welcome Susie Alegre, a leading human rights barrister in the internationally renowned Doughty Street Chambers. She has been a legal pioneer in digital human rights, in particular the impact of artificial intelligence on the human rights of freedom of thought and opinion. Her book, Freedom to Think, charts the history and importance of our most basic human right: freedom of thought. Providing a bold new framework to understand how our agency is being gradually undermined, Freedom to Think is a groundbreaking and vital charter for taking back our humanity and safeguarding our reason in the technological age. In this fascinating episode we discuss: How human rights underpin what it means to be human and why the right to the freedom of thought should be protected at all costs How historically this right has come under threat, but never more so that today, when the threat of surveillance capitalism means our minds are read every single minute We discuss how to stay cognisant of how technology is affecting our freedom of thought And future strategies to keep us safe. This episode is part of our mini-series on 'Self' where we explore how our technology impacts some of the most important aspects of being human. Over the coming weeks we will speak with Krista Tippett, creator of On Being, Susie Alegre, human rights lawyer and author of Freedom to Think, Jillian Horton MD, physician and author of We are All Perfectly Fine, Casey Swartz, author of Attention, A Love Story, L M Sarcasas, renown commentator on technology & society, and Sharath Jeevan OBE, motivation expert and author of Intrinsic. In this episode of of Markets & Morality, our guests argue that this is not the case. The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
“We do not talk to say something, but to obtain a certain effect.”—Joseph Goebbels We are joined by our doubleplusgood friend Antony Rotunno for a relaxed, unstructured--and fullwise informative--conversation on "Propaganda in the COVID Era". Rabbit. Custard. Over the last two years (almost), we have been intimidated, cajoled, guilt-tripped and "nudged" (oh, what a cute word!) by the social engineers of Ingsoc. Where's your mother? Goodthinking behavioural psychologists, bellyfeeling mathematical epidemiologists, newspeaking media propagandists (and many other duckspeaking "ists" besides) have conspired to prod us out of our doubleplusungood ownlives into accepting so-called "non-pharmaceutical interventions" and "safe and effective" novel gene therapies in an ostensible "war" against a non-existentially threatening respiratory virus of dubious origin. Rudolph, can't see you now? Biscuits! Marigold? Fuzz, fuzz, fuzz. So join us as we attempt to dissect—with some oldthinking help from Jacques Ellul—aspects of the "invisible government" of "experts", "nudgers", "partnerships", "initiatives" and other plusgood organs of Ingsoc's "inverted totalitarian" underbelly. Why are we so vulnerable to misinformation? How do we make better choices?Do we react to the immediacy of information or the quality of that information?Turns out, immediacy carries the day. Worse yet, if that misinformation confirms our previously held biases or beliefs, we are even more susceptible to its influence. It all has to do with Nudge Theory; a breakthrough in Behavioral Economics that was based on the pioneering research of two Israeli psychologists: Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in the 1970's that examined why people make the choices that they do.Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein developed the human bahevior patterns discovered by Kahneman and Tversky and formed them into a cohesive theory that attempts to explain human decision making in a more complete way than other theories of choice-making.In 2017, Richard Thaler won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for Nudge Theory.Let's look at how we can use the best of what Nudge Theory has to offer to make sure we protect ourselves from misinformation and make the decisions that enhance the quality of our lives.Where to learn more:Thaler, Richard H. 2018. In this episode, Aaron and Trishul explore behavioral economics. They discuss a few biases and heuristics that attempt to explain why humans and societies don't operate with their best interests in mind. They provide specific examples of how individuals or organizations can take advantage of or exploit the brain's preference to be lazy. So once you understand how your mind works, how can you take control to nudge yourself in the right direction? Listen to the end to find out.Episode ReferencesNudge by Thaler and SunsteinThinking, Fast and Slow by Kahneman4 Tips for Using Nudge Theory in Your LearningThe Opt-Out SolutionThe Impact of Legislation on Organ DonationStreamlining and Nudging In Voter RegistrationCan One Desire Too Much of a Good Thing?
