Saeid Golkar has been writing and teaching about Iranian politics for the last decade since he was forced to leave the country. A 2009 alumnus of CDDRL's Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program, Saeid is an expert on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and their Basij auxiliaries. Last month he joined Francis Fukuyama to discuss the nature and implications of the anti-regime protests that have rocked Iran since the killing of Mahsa Amini in September 2022.Saeid Golkar is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science & Public Service at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Previously an adjunct professor at Northwestern University's Middle East and North African Studies Program and a visiting scholar at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies, he was also a  postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University's Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law. Golkar was a lecturer from 2004 to 2009 in the Department of Social Sciences at Azad University, Iran, where he taught undergraduate courses on the political sociology of Iran and the sociology of war and military forces.Golkar received a PhD from the Department of Political Science at Tehran University in June 2008. His recent work can be found in publications such as Middle East Journal; Armed Forces & Society; Politics, Religion & Ideology; and Middle East Policy. Captive Society, his book on the Basij paramilitary force and the securitization of Iranian society, was copublished by Columbia University Press and Woodrow Wilson Center Press in June 2015.

episode 141 Why This Iranian Revolution Can Succeed with Swarnika & Saied Introduction Most of us have heard that the current revolution in Iran began with death of Mahsa Amini, who was beaten to death for not wearing the hijab in accordance with the regime's morality laws. But did you know her name was Jina? When Jina was born, her parents were required to seek permission to name her Jina. The name was not allowed. So, they chose Mahsa as her official name and called her Jina at home. This little nugget of truth, shared by Saeid, one of today's guests, tells us that it's simplistic to say this revolution is to overthrow laws about hijab. The discontent, the anger, the struggle is far greater, deeper, wider. Today's guests are Swarnika and Saeid, a married couple. Swarnika, who happens to be one of the most talented food photographers I know, shooting for major brands in the margins of her job with a leading technology company, was born and raised in India. She describes her university as a “mini-Iran” where women were obligated to keep curfews as early as 4pm during exams while men studied together as late as they pleased. Once she was once sent back to her dorm to change because her socks showed. Swarnika did choose to speak up on these issues and her experiences doing so gave her great empathy for the courageous people of Iran. Later, Swarnika married an Iranian man who she met in graduate school here in the US. Saied is our other guest today. Like Jina,  Saeid has only known life in Iran under the current regime. Only by listening to people like Saeid, who speaks with truth and passion, can we really understand the struggle and the incredible, awesome courage of Iranians who are truly risking death by protesting against a regime that has weaponized religion to justify their power, bankrupt the country, rule by terror, and rob each citizen of their joy. Although Saeid is realistic and sober minded about the exceptional threats against protestors, he also speaks eloquently about why he believes this time, Iran may emerge free. Right now the biggest challenge to Kais Saied's rule isn't coming from his opponents in government. It's coming from the country's largest trade union. On Thursday, the UGTT organised a mass, public sector walkout, in response to the president's planned economic reforms. Flights were canceled, buses and trains were halted and government offices were closed. Saeid is in the midst of trying to raise funds to prevent the country's economic collapse, and in an attempt to secure a four billion dollar loan from the IMF, he froze public sector wages, and cut subsidies, causing unions to revolt. An innovative solution for the huge amounts of pandemic-generated waste has been developed at the University of Auckland. Hot pressurised water and compressed air is applied to non-recyclable PPE gear – with water and acetic acid being the end-products Doctor Saeid Baroutian says this could save tonnes of waste being dumped daily into landfills and oceans. “Not only do you discard masks and other PPE clothes and healthcare, but they also have a short and long-term social, environmental impact.” LISTEN ABOVE

Men när hon studerade filosofi växte hennes nyfikenhet på människan och livet, vilket gjorde att hon sedan utbildade sig till hjärnforskare. Hon har tagit sig dit hon är idag genom blod, svett och tårar, även om det inte alltid känts som det eftersom allt hon gjort har varit passionsdrivet. Nyfikenheten på människan, livet och världen är också hennes största drivkraft. Mouna definierar framgång som att göra nåt meningsfullt, som inte är en statisk punkt dit man når utan snarare en dans som pågår där musik och rörelse hänger ihop. Hennes motto är "there's never an excuse to be an asshole", och hon menar att man alltid bör vara snäll och ödmjuk - att inte döma andra människor. Hennes största lärdom är att vara självkritisk, våga ställa obekväma frågor och utmana sina egna tankar. Hon menar att ingen åsikt eller tanke får vara tabu, och berättar hur hennes bror Saeid är hennes bollplank i intellektuella, existentiella och emotionella frågor. När Mouna var tre år flydde hennes familj från Iran, vilket innebar vissa trauman. Men hon tror att om man upplever trauman och kan komma över dem kan de ge superkrafter och perspektiv. Hon menar att livet "handlar inte om hur många slag man slår, utan hur många slag man får och ändå ställer sig upp och fortsätter framåt". Hon berättar om hur minnen kom tillbaka när hennes bror nyligen överraskade familjen genom att ta med dem till flyktingförläggningen de först bodde på när de kom till Sverige. Mouna talar om vikten att hänga med i utvecklingen nu inom hälsoområdet, där sjukdomar och sociala normer kommer att förändras. Hon lyfter riskerna med att ha ett socialt fattigt liv och hur mening kan förlänga livet med flera år. Dessutom varför innovatörerna som främjar vetenskap och teknologi är vår tids största feminister. Mouna vill få människor att förstår hur vi fungerar, demokratisera kunskap och sprida framtidshopp. Hon tycker det är viktigt att göra komplexa saker begripliga och att göra vetenskap sexigt. Hon menar att det råder en alarmistisk kultur där många har ångest inför mycket och blir handlingsförlamade, men att framtiden är ljus och hon ser inte varför vi inte skulle lyckas lösa de utmaningar vi står inför idag. Hon tipsar om att inte se sig själv som offer och att ställa sig frågan "vem gör jag det här för". När hon själv vill fly verkligheten eller tolka sig själv är det till musiken hon vänder sig. Saeid Nahavandi is the current director of Deakin University's CISR research program, having 50 dedicated researchers within the centre focusing on a range of multi-disciplinary research, simulation optimization and also the study of Haptics and robotics. Nahavandi believes the Deakin University centre is unique by possessing multi-skilled mechanical, electrical software engineers at the centers disposal. Deakin University's CISR research centre plays a major role throughout the Australian industry because of the devices, techniques and the applied research used to deliver a project from theory to reality.

"Saeid Nahavandi explains the meaning of 'Haptics': which refers to the force of feed back and the sense of touch. For example when a operator uses a computer they interact or touch the computer's mouse component to become successful with the interaction. Nahavandi highlights there are three different types of 'Haptics' including: 1. Human Haptics 2. Computer Haptics 3. Machine Haptics CISR's major researching focus consist of multi-point haptics, because normal huma interaction involves one or more haptic to interact with objects and other people. CISR is looking at how to increase the presence of the haptics with their robotic systems designs. "
