How Can You Advocate for Your Child?

The Orton-Gillingham Podcast

Hello and welcome back! This week, Katie and Esther discussed how parents can advocate for their children when they notice that they are having reading difficulties.   But first, we wanted to talk about a current hot topic in educational news. According to an article written by Emily Peck for Axios, the wage gap between teachers and other professionals is the widest it has been since 1960. What are your thoughts on this? To access this article, refer to the link below and make sure to tell us what you think!   Now to get into today's topic; How can you advocate for your child? First it is good to recognize the signs that your child may be struggling in school. Some of these signs can include: Your child looking nervous at the mention of school  Your child cries when school is mentioned  Your child doesn't want to eat  Your child breaks down when it is time to do homework  Your child expresses they don't want to go to school, saying this such as:  “I don't feel well.”  “I don't have any friends at school.”  “I feel stupid at school.”  “What if I go to school and I start to feel sick?”  “I never know what's going on at school.”  “I am afraid of someone at school.”  Noticing these signs can help you recognize that your child needs help.   Now that you have noticed the signs, what do you do next? Be prepared!  Write down all your concerns before talking to your child's teacher  Don't be afraid to ask for special services  Don't be embarrassed to cry! It's that time of the year that a lot of schools are having conferences. This is a great opportunity to have all your concerns written down and ready to discuss with your child's teacher to start the process of getting your child help!   Are you a teacher getting ready for conferences? One helpful tip to prepare yourself and parents for conferences is to send a general agenda to parents ahead of time so parents know what to expect. An example of this could be: Something positive  An area of concern/opportunity for improvement  Review grades  Do you have any tips that work for you when it's time for conferences? Make sure to let us know and spread the knowledge!   IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Brainspring is going to be at the IDA 2023 Annual Reading, Literacy, and Learning Conference this weekend October 12-14, 2023, at the Hyatt Regency Columbus in Columbus, OH. Regardless of your position in your organization, you are in sales.  As a representative of your company's brand and a customer service representative in projects and processes, you are in sales and relationship management. In this episode of The Forward Thinking podcast, host Stephanie Barton, VP Marketing and Communications, FCCS at FCCS is joined by Aaron Tigert, Regional Vice President of Core Markets, Compeer Financial.  Aaron will also be a featured speaker at the upcoming Learning Conference in San Antonio and at this fall's Forum for Ag Lending. Together they discuss a new podcast topic — relationship management and sales.  Together they highlight the importance of building the networking and sales relationships that every one of us have with both coworkers and clients.    Episode Insights Include:   Strengthening new and existing client relationships First consider the business model you are aiming to achieve.  Both Covid-19 and the current economic environment have had a significant impact on perceived competitive advantages.  Commit to having a desire to meet clients where they're at and help them accomplish their goals.  Identify the value that you are offering your clients beyond being a low-cost provider.  Trust is the key to building strong relationships with every client.    Building and achieving trust Trustworthiness is the combination of credibility, reliability and intimacy.  Achieving trust is an on-going process that must be addressed in every interaction with clients.  Being considered trustworthy by your clients should be behind your ‘why' of all that you do.  Understand the ways that you might undermine your clients trust in you.  Your personal brand and your organization's brand both play into your trustworthiness.    Making connections with clients on their level  Repeated positive experiences are key to making meaningful client connections.  The process of building relationships will take an extended amount of time.  Providing value to your client through intellectual property is essential.  Your credibility will increase as you continually provide excellent value to your clients.  Identify the role that each step of the sales funnel plays in enhancing client relationships.  Seek the answers to questions about your clients that will help you understand their goals.    Differences between networking and prospecting If you are a relationships manager and expected to bring in new clients, you need to take time to reflect on your previous year and the development of your business line.  Your mindset matters- whether you are networking or prospecting, how are you developing your relationships and communication skills?    How to increase sales without seeming ‘salesy' Begin by grounding yourself in the problem that you are solving for your client.  Always keep sales in mind, but don't start every conversation with product specific pricing.  Have 3 pieces of insight ready to share with clients at all times.  Ask open-ended questions about your clients current concerns.  Connect the dots between your product offerings and what's happening on the farm.    This podcast is powered by FCCS. Photo by Chris Montgomery on Unsplash This is the time of year where we see conferences like DevLearn (which we spoke at last year), The Guild's Learning Conference, and this year, for the first time ever, we had a three-week run of Customer Education conferences! Now, these were all online conferences since we're in the midst of Covid-related travel and gathering restrictions, but in a way this may have enabled us to see what we saw this year - three customer education conferences in a row! So what were the conferences? The fun started with CEdMA's annual conference, continued with Skilljar Connect next week. We've spoken at both of these conferences before, and they were joined by a new, third conference - Thought Industries COGNITION. Instead of recapping each conference individually, this episode is a rollup of all three featuring some of the themes and trends we saw along the way! The Shift to Online Conferences In this episode we begin by exploring the Pros and Cons of our Shift to Online Conferences. Online or Virtual conferences are hard to pull off. The main uptick for most attendees is that we have a lot more flexibility. Recordings are typically available for all sessions, so this really helped many of us with busy schedules pick and choose and catch up if we missed anything. Of course, there are cons. New technologies and the complexity of working with many integrated technologies, and even our own Internet (or lack thereof) caused some issues. We personally experienced some of this, but as Customer Education folks we rolled with the punches. CEdMA Connect 2020 CEdMA's Connect 2020 event was the first stop on our tour where we presented our Customer Education Manifesto for the first time (and do a to a live audience!).   We enjoyed the keynote from Bill Cushard - “The Next Big Thing in Customer Education”. The “7 Habits of Inclusive Leaders” from Melissa Majors was a great addition that injected much-needed DE&I content. Alessandra Marinetty delivered a great case study on the development of Box's event-based Certification Program, and much more. Skilljar Connect 2020 Of all the events we attended, Skilljar Connect 2020 takes the prize for being the most social - leveraging Hopin to satisfy the missing puzzle piece of networking.   Skilljar executed well on this event - deploying a content track in addition to more traditionally table steaks of material focused on leadership, strategy, monetization, and more.  For example, Debbie Smith from Braze was a huge hit (worth watching if you couldn't make it).  Randon and Kyle from JAMF dropped sage advice on creating content at scale. Beyond this we experienced some great material from OSISoft on Training a Global Audience, the LinkedIn education teams (and yes, there are many) talked about aligning across several product lines, and the Slack team shared how they assembled their Study Guide for their new Certification.   We did our first ever Live Mailbag episode based on the popular

Photo by Chris Montgomery on Unsplash This is the time of year where we see conferences like DevLearn (which we spoke at last year), The Guild’s Learning Conference, and this year, for the first time ever, we had a three-week run of Customer Education conferences! Now, these were all online conferences since we’re in the midst of Covid-related travel and gathering restrictions, but in a way this may have enabled us to see what we saw this year - three customer education conferences in a row! So what were the conferences? The fun started with CEdMA’s annual conference, continued with Skilljar Connect next week. We’ve spoken at both of these conferences before, and they were joined by a new, third conference - Thought Industries COGNITION. CEdMA Connect 2020 CEdMA’s Connect 2020 event was the first stop on our tour where we presented our Customer Education Manifesto for the first time (and do a to a live audience!).   We enjoyed the keynote from Bill Cushard - “The Next Big Thing in Customer Education”. Andrew Dell'Antonio gives us some very interesting ways to think about UDL as a pathway to decolonize the kind of work we do, not just accessibility and content-wise, but as a way to question the way we teach in higher education in the United States so that UDL is considered as a place of practice to question the way we do pedagogy and curriculum.

It's been a while since our last podcast so we decided to come back with a very special episode. Yes folks, it's another LIVE episode! This time our audio set-up was much improved and we had a fantabulous audience. The Digital Media and Learning Conference was in town and we were visited by folks from Learning Labs across the country. Just to name a few we had folks from Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Minneapolis and the Bronx! You were all a fantastic audience and we wish we had put a mic out in the audience so we could have recorded all of your questions and comments. And now we have a lovely recorded version of the live episode for your enjoyment. We discussed the problems with grinding and the difficulties in connecting to your character in video games. We ended the discussion with a personal choice focusing on the characters we connected to the most in video games. Enjoy the discussion with Kaillif, John, Calder, Adjani and Taylor. Recording of the Keep Calm and Carry on debate at the Plymouth e-Learning Conference. During the Second World War, the British government sought to use appropriate communications tools to convey policy to the populace, whether via posters, newspapers, radio, or legislation. Resource restrictions meant that there was not always a free choice in which to use. Sound familiar? It should. As James Clay indicated in a blog post on January 10th snow, floods and swine flu all have the potential bring our physical campus to a halt, for valid health and safety reasons. Institutions announce via local radio and the web that they are closed to students and staff. In most institutions such crises effectively bring the entire workforce to a halt. Despite the digital options available, the word ‘closed' implies that no (formal) activity will take place, and sends the message to staff and students that they do not need to go to work, or even do any work, even if they could. Culturally, most institutions do not incorporate online or virtual learning into everyday working cultures, at any level: management, staff or students. Those who do not routinely use digital options can't see that closing the physical institution need not have a significant impact on the business of the institution, if that business can be carried out at home or online. The issue is not to focus upon contingency planning, but to focus on changing the way people work when there isn't snow and changing the way people think when there is. Although this debate will centre largely upon Web 2.0 methods, it will take an outcomes-focused approach, rather than a tools focused approach, in line with William Morris's quote “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. We consider what is necessary, not just in times of crisis, but in implementing everyday e- practice to meet learning and teaching needs. With a focus upon communities rather than machines, and a recognition that no tool offers “one size fits all”, each panellist will focus upon a specific relationship, specifically ‘Institutional Representation', ‘Collaboration' and ‘Teaching Purposes'. What institutional cultural factors will need to be addressed? What do electronic communications approaches offer that previous methods haven't? What drawbacks are acknowledged in the use of each with regards to the outcomes required? Which tool is most appropriate for the outcome required, and what are its pedagogical purposes? With James Clay, Bex Lewis and Carolin Esser and of course delegates from the Plymouth e-Learning Conference.
