This week on the podcast, I'm going to be sharing why I have found adventure a crucial part of my clients' and my own personal journeys to happiness and health. I'll be discussing what adventure means, my three big reasons why you should be doing it, and three action tips to getting the “adventurous” ball rolling, so to speak! Every week you tune into the Fit is Freedom Podcast, you'll hear me mentioning “a touch of adventure” as part of the journey to health and wellness. But, why is adventure so important? What is Adventuring? Adventure can have a variety of meanings. For me, personally, adventure typically includes being outdoors and doing something active. Oftentimes, I feel especially adventurous if it is a new experience like trying a new hike in the Smoky Mountains or stand up paddleboarding in a new place. For some, that may be a bit too much, and that is OKAY! Adventure could mean taking your grandkids to the zoo or going for a walk on vacation. Simply taking time to be outdoors, challenging yourself and doing something novel can really have an impact on your overall health. Get The fitness consistency book that will change your life! Three Reasons for Adventure Here are my three main reasons that you should start adding a little adventure in your life! You're NOT too old It's the age old excuse (pun intended), but it just doesn't hold any weight! I've had clients in their 50's start hiking and backpacking for the first time. There are people who do their first marathon or triathlon in their 60's. It's never too late to start adding a little fun, so the best time to start is now! Get beyond your comfort zone No matter your age or fitness level, it's great for your mind, body, and soul to go beyond your comfort zone. I had a client a while back who really wanted to see the Smokies. She never thought she'd be able to hike the trails, but after hard work and preparation, she did! She pushed beyond her fears, and she's now bringing her husband and grandkids, creating lifelong memories that they never would have otherwise done! Expand your horizons Going on adventures expands you. When we're expanding, we're never contracting. As we age, people often see their worlds and experience getting smaller and smaller. Adding adventure does just the opposite! Another client of mine wanted to learn to stand up paddleboard. When she finally did it, she loved it! Because she loved it, she started taking classes and meeting other people who loved it as well! Before she knew it, her life had expanded beyond what she would have dreamed, just by simply trying one new thing. Three Tips for Adventuring If you're not sure how to get started with a new adventure, here are my main tips for getting started… Dream Before you decide to add some adventure to your life, take some time to dream a little! What do you enjoy? How do you like to move? What does your community have to offer that you've never tried before? Find a dream, no matter how small, and then you'll be ready to put a plan in motion. Train Depending on the adventure and your current fitness level, you'll probably need to train for it in one way or another. My typical rule of thumb is to allow 3-5 months of preparing if your adventure is on the more strenuous side. For example, a backpacking or kayaking trip would require more intensive training than simply trying a paddleboard. Find Community Lastly, find your tribe! Find that friend who will go with you. Join a class that makes sure you're not alone. Enlist an accountability coach or partner like myself. Your adventure will go to the next level when you do it with other people. Trust me! While there's little debate about the need of movement and exercise and it's ability to increase the quality of life through improved immunity, sleep, energy, metabolism, psychological state, wellness and longevity, and the improved function of tissues such as bones, nerves, joints, and muscles. The question lies in what kind? How much? What's the best food plan to accommodate our workouts, both in providing fuel as well as recovery. We all have different goals, different lifestyles, different body types. And today, we hope to clear up a little of that confusion and help set you up for success. My guest today is Catherine Piot, coming to us all the way from Berlin, Germany. She has a master's degree in nutrition and physical education with almost 30 years of experience. In addition, she also has numerous certifications in the field of athletic performance and sports nutrition. Catherine is the author of the book ‘'Transform your body after 40. Stephanie Crook went from non-runner to marathoner in less than a year. During a run several years ago, Stephanie felt her legs go numb and suspected some sort of injury was to blame. Instead, she was eventually diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Dai Manuel was today’s guest on the Dads with Daughters Podcast. We explored his journey as a father to two daughters but beyond that we talk about nutrition, health and well Instead of collecting things and stuff, they pivoted a number of years ago to be able to have more experiences then things. This led him to quit his career, give away all of their stuff and packed up a SUV and started traveling. They first traveled around the USA, but then moved overseas to Bali, Indonesia. Dai stated that he struggled a bit when his daughters transitioned from being a young girl to a woman and his girls pulling away and no longer wanting to sit on his lap watching a movie, but he noticed that he was feeling more uncomfortable to know what his role was during these changes. In asking him about his fears in raising a daughter. His wife asked him whether he is the type of person that he would want to marry his daughter and it was at this point that he realized that he needed to look at his priorities. This changed everything for him to remove alcohol from his life, but also other crutches that helped him for the better. Now, his biggest fear is that he is not supporting them enough in allowing them to become the person that they are wanting to become. He now works to help them to know that they have the tools to become successful. Dai Manuel has positioned himself as an expert in health, wellness and fitness and continues to mentor others in helping them to find health in their own lives. Dai explained that he learned through mistakes. He explained that he was morbidly obese when he was a child. He shared that he became obese through what he was eating. He watched a lot of movies and played a lot of video games and at age 14, he found that he was depressed, withdrawn and did not like what he saw in the mirror. He even was suicidal at one point to a point when he ended up breaking down and thinking about death. As Dai stated “When you are more scared about staying the same, then changing, then you know that you are ready for a change.“ At age 15 he went to the library and started learning about fitness and nutrition. He looked at mentors for advice. He had supportive parents, but it was not until he was ready to change that he started to change. It took 20 months to make these changes in his life. It was a big shift that people noticed and he started to have people asking him for advice which was not something that he had before. Many of us have had hyper-focused on our careers, our role as dad or other things where we start living life on auto pilot but we forget to start thinking about ourselves and figuring out how we can live a full life. As Dai asks, you need to know, “What do I want?” “What do I want out of the relationships in my life” As you start to explore these things you will find that you can start to make changes in your life that are long-standing. Dai Manuel says if you take 30 minutes a day as a start and to not be as attached to results as it takes a while to get to a new lifestyle. What you are doing to find fitness should be fun, not work. You have to trust the process and the purpose will come. Dai offers 30 minute exercises for all for free. He also has shared all of his fitness thoughts in a book called the Whole Fitness Manifesto that you can find for free on his website too. Pavel would call this an opportunity to grease the groove. Phil Sabatini with East Coast Gold would call it raising the minimums. I’d say it’s a call to FIND FITNESS. It’s your duty as a human to honor the effort of your genetic forebears to battle the sedentary plague sweeping the west. We didn’t become the most dominant species on the planet lying around. Somewhere in your lineage is a badass who sprinted, jumped, climbed, threw and fought so you could enjoy the comforts of modern day living. To honor that effort why not take advantage of the fitness opportunities all around you? This idea started for me in late August while dropping my kiddos off at school. For days I walked under this gate without giving it a look. Then one morning I ran out of time training and had to ax my pull ups from the session. For whatever reason I noticed the bar at drop off walking the kiddos to class and hit a set of pull ups. On the way back to the car I hit another set. I repeated the effort in the afternoon and the next day. Other parents started noticing and would smile. I started challenging kids and parents to join me. Some did. Most didn't, but either case only fueled me to continue. At 3 pull ups each time I passed the gate I was getting 12 a day. At 180 days I would hit 2,160 bonus pull ups over the school year! That’s a nice bonus. Who wouldn’t like an extra 2G’s of anything? More fuel was added to the fire. I have since started hitting sets of 3-12 pull ups at the kid’s school as I pick them up and drop them off. I now, also, do chin ups at the school I teach whenever I get the chance. On good days I get well over 50 bonus pull ups in a day. On bad days I always get my 12! I have been at this pretty hard and have noticed the impacts in some unexpected places. The constant pain in my shoulder and elbow from trying to master the kip and butterfly have vanished. Deadlift numbers are on the rise as my upper back can maintain shape as I break bigger loads from the floor. Best of all, Wifey Pooh gives me the wink, nod, and that great “lat” slap only the most narcissistic of the male species can truly appreciate. The bottom lines are that in terms of form, function, and appearance things have taken a turn for the better, and I wasn’t doing so bad before. You can do the same. So, who's coming with me! I know pulls ups are a toughie for folks but why would we start FINDING FITNESS with something easy. If you have a pull up do them. If you don’t have a pull up, jump up and hold your head high. Heck, simply hang for a manageable amount of time and let gravity strengthen your grip and loosen up your shoulders. Listen, you’re a smart girl, find a bar and smash some body weight rows. You owe it to way more than yourself to do what you can, when you can, however you can. Get out there and FIND FITNESS where you least expect it! We were lucky enough to talk to personal trainer Megan Smith! You can find her on Instragram @Muncher_Cruncher or on her website www.munchercruncher.com. We talked to her about how to get started in the wide world of fitness. She suggested a few things that were really helpful Find the why. Why do you want to lose weight or start working out? Decide why you want to make changes and continue to remind yourself of that reason. Do what you love. You will never stick with it if you don’t enjoy it. Find a form of exercise that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning. Reward yourself. Not all rewards are created equal. Find something that motivates you. Set small attainable goals and reward yourself when you accomplish them. Don’t compare yourself to others. Easier said than done. Progress can be slow and every body responds differently. She challenged us to cut back on sugar this week. That doesn’t mean to cut it out completely, but to be more aware of how much sugar we are eating and to reduce that amount. Megan gave us some really great advice on how to get started and stay motivated. I hope you enjoy the episode.

Although he had one of the most dominate NFL careers of all time, Terrell Owens had a less than traditional path to superstardom.
