Welcome to the latest episode of the Recruitment Leadership Podcast, hosted by Alison Humphries.   In this episode, Alison is joined by Sarah Knight, leadership and mindset coach, business development expert, and founder of Sarah Knight Consultancy. Sarah is also the host of the podcast “It's Got Pockets”, which explores the realities of being a woman in business - and the conversations we need to be having more often.   With a background in communications, PR, and people development, Sarah shares practical advice on how recruitment professionals can build lasting client relationships in a market where business development has become tougher - and more important - than ever.   Together, Alison and Sarah explore how recruiters and business leaders can move away from over-reliance on digital tools and get back to what really drives growth: conversations, clarity, and consistency.   Here's what you'll learn in this episode:

Today's guest is the anti-guru behind the massive No F*cks Given franchise, Sarah Knight. What started life with the Marie Kondo pastiche, The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A F*ck, now comprises 7 guides and three journals which have sold three million copies and a TED talk that's notched up ten million views.  But Sarah wasn't always the queen of giving zero f*cks. Scroll back to her mid-30s and you'd have found her having a panic attack in the Manhattan office where she worked. So started ten years of anxiety and depression, a massive leap into the freelance unknown (which let's face it, worked out pretty well!) and a 1500 mile geographical from Brooklyn to the Caribbean, where she now lives. Sarah joined me from her home in the Dominican Republic (grrrr) to talk about her new book, Grow The F*ck Up, how sometimes it takes getting what you want to realise you don't want it, Why we often need permission to make a change and having the courage to recognise you really don't have enough left in the tank. Sarah also told me how she learnt to give fewer but better fucks, what to do if you're married to a “big f*cking baby”, why selfish shouldn't be a four letter word and she gives us a masterclass in learning to say no. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Grow The F*ck Up by Sarah Knight and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. ProcrastiN8rs don't like to spend more time and effort in things than they have to. So you shouldn't spend time or effort in relationships that are toxic. There are certain types of people out there that just SUCK. Literally. They suck you dry of your emotional, mental, and maybe even financial resources. Embrace your laziness and say goodbye to these people, cut them out of your life, instead of trying to unburn your burnt pizza, so to speak. No matter how much work or effort you put into fixing it, some things, like toxic relationships/friendships, are just so fundamentally destroyed that they can NEVER be salvaged or redeemed. Paul starts by explaining how the strategy is built upon working in partnership, both internally and externally, and a focus on learning as a social activity. Next, Paul shares his insight on what sector leaders can do to enable a culture that supports digital transformation, touching on resource, flexible funding and the importance of a collaborative approach. We hear Paul's thoughts on where the sector might be in the next five years in terms of digital transformation and how he believes that AI will not break the USP for higher education of bringing people together. I first came across today's guest, Dr Emily Nagoski, on this very podcast, when my then guest Sarah Knight (creator of the NoFucks Given franchise) raved about the transformational power of her runaway bestseller, Come As You Are.I hunted it down and, like millions of women the world over, I was blown away. A sex expert speaking our language? Taking the pressure off, rather than piling it on? Never! So when I heard that the Kinsey-educated sex educator had turned her attention to long term relationships in her new book, Come Together, I was obsessed. Not least because it turns out that sex experts are human too and Emily had experienced her own fallow period. But instead of wallowing in it or panicking or buying uncomfortable knickers, Emily used her own story of sexual disconnection and reconnection as an opportunity to look at what makes and breaks sexual connections. And guess what: it's not what you think.Emily joined me from her home in New England to discuss coming out as a sex expert who lost her sex drive, taking the shoulds out of your sex life, why passion is overrated, how to get the weeds out of your sexual garden! being told she no longer had a “young vagina” And Why she only has one inarguable piece of advice: lube is good!* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Come As You Are and Come Together by Emily Nagoski and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. In today's episode I'm chatting with my dear friend, Kuba, a polyglot and passionate language learner who has a fascinating history with languages. As a native Polish speaker, Kuba learned Spanish and English in school, Hungarian at University and through immersion, and Catalan through immersion before diving into a world of self-study. After becoming a polyglot in this way then dabbling in many languages for several years, Kuba started learning Turkish and realized that it wasn't as easy as his previous languages. He knew he could learn it because he'd learned so many languages before, but he struggled in a very unexpected way. Join Kuba and me today we we explore language curiosity, frustrations, and expectations. We dive into beliefs and doubts, avoiding and changing focus languages, goals versus projects, immersion and the weight of learning a language. Kuba brings so much experience and depth to conversations about languages, and what he brings is so much more than simple, cursory tips and tricks of what's worked for him. His openness about his struggles, especially while already being a polyglot and already having multiple fluent languages, is insightful, inspiring, and something from which I think each one of us can learn. Writers, some thoughts: first off, I HATE the word of the year I declared in this episode. I chose… poorly. It's such a weak work, so unadventurous, so poky. So I have already reframed, and searched long and hard for a word that basically means, I am never ever making another TikTok again no matter what anyone says, and the result is unapologetic. For the moment. I'm not superthrilled, bc I would rather have a positive active word that one that starts with a negation, but that's where I am for the moment. (Got a better idea? Reply to this email, I haven't inked this into the old bujo yet!) I considered NotSorry, in honor of Sarah Knight's glorious anti-self-help books, which I reference in the episode, but I think I'll rock unapologetic better.Well, that was very important. TO ME. #notsorryThis is our annual goal setting episode. We focused mostly on WOTYs (word of the year), possibly because it was mid-December when we recorded and I for one have STILL not figured out exactly wtf I'm trying to do with myself next year other than write another book and attempt to sell it. Jennie gives some brilliant advice about thinking quarterly, which I am totally taking. Sarah dials it back (which is still a lot) and Jess reminds us all to stick with goals that make us happy not just to achieve, but while we're doing them. While we're at it, we re-visit our yearly advice to distinguish between goals we can control (write the book, query the book) and goals we cannot (sell the book to a trad publisher). The first get milestones, steps and our full attention. The second… we recognize may need to shift with the sands. [00:00:58] Making people happy is good, but not at the expense of well-being, others, or the greater good. Genuine happiness and contribution make the world a better place. [00:04:40] The writer realized they were constantly people-pleasing to avoid conflict and shame, but upon reflection, they questioned whether saying no would really bring shame. They concluded that saying no would only bring discomfort. [00:06:33] Learn to say no and set boundaries to find true freedom and live authentically. Three ways to shift focus from people-pleasing. [00:07:34] Saying no to those who take advantage of you leads to finding an authentic community that resonates with you. Finding the thing you can say yes to and setting boundaries helps attract the right people. [00:08:38] Say no in the right ways, attract the right people by being a principles pleaser, find your core values to govern your decisions. [00:09:47] Transcend people pleasing and become a principles pleaser to attract the right type of people. Core values like compassion help in saying no to unethical requests. [00:10:43] Live true to yourself, find core values and non-negotiables to set boundaries and stop being a people pleaser. [00:12:04] Setting and sticking to non-negotiables help increase confidence, reduce anxiety and lead to better mental health. Taking action is the final step. [00:13:07] Setting core values and non-negotiables helps you become a principles pleaser and prioritize saying no, even when it's uncomfortable. We could all do with a little refresher in adulting from time to time, says Sarah Knight, author of the multi-million selling No F*cks Given Guides. Sarah's back on the podzine this week, to talk about the latest in the series, Grow The F*ck Up, as well as giving Jen a few pointers on where grown-ups go wrong, why self-awareness can be a real drag but is absolutely crucial, and how to ask for what we want. Hannah's chatting to Davinia Hamilton and Marta Vella, the Maltese actors and writers behind Blanket Ban, a play about Malta's total ban on abortion, which opens at the Southwark Playhouse on 25 April. In JOTB, Jen's asking how on earth it can be possible that women's football isn't cool enough, as she talks all things international. And it's mashed potato and strong nana game at the ready in Rated or Dated, as Mick takes us to her leader, Steven Spielberg, to revisit UFO blockbuster Close Encounters of the Third Kind. My guest today is one of the most talented individuals I've ever met when it comes to branding and visual design. I met Nadine Hanafi years ago when we were both partnered with the same company, and at the time I was in that frustrating place many of you may be able to relate to where you know you have an incredible product or service, but you don't feel like your brand accurately represents it and so you're almost embarrassed to go out and do presentations or share your brand materials because you know they're not doing you any favors. After I met Nadine I got introduced to this most incredible product she had created called Digital Brand Kit, which is an incredible plug and play system for female entrepreneurs to create gorgeous visual brand assets for a fraction of the cost of what they would pay a design firm, and look great doing it. Nadine Hanafi is the founder of an award-winning design firm called We Are Visual, author of an internationally recognized book and training program called Slide Therapy and the creator of the most epic branding system on the internet called Digital Brand Kit. She is a certified branding expert, Fortune 100 design consultant and professional cheerleader for women with big dreams. Nadine has over a decade of experience working with c-suite execs at companies like Disney and Verizon and bestselling authors like Lori Harder and Sarah Knight helping them share their messages through inspired visual stories and head-turning visual branding. Show Notes: [3:51] - Nadine shares the things that fell into place that led her to create Digital Brand Kit. [5:27] - She discovered that using complicated programs like Photoshop was not for her and even with her background, she knew she didn't want to waste time learning them. [7:20] - Her niche originally was working primarily with speakers and creating artistic PowerPoint presentations for them. [9:38] - The most common mistake Nadine sees entrepreneurs do is spending tons of money right away on branding. [11:08] - In the beginning, your brand should be fluid until you find your niche and who the ideal client is that is attracted to your brand. [12:23] - DIY isn't always a bad idea, but piecemealing everything together does not make a cohesive brand. [14:06] - Be proactive and make a list of every single asset your business will need. [16:25] - It is your responsibility to give creative direction to junior designers. [18:43] - When determining your brand design, find colors first. [20:25] - Nadine is launching a new workshop and offers services to help you determine the colors that are a match for your brand. [22:55] - Colors make a huge impact on your brand and having the clarity of what is congruent with your brand and who you want to attract is crucial. [24:15] - Colors invoke a lot of emotions, so it's important for your audience to connect with them the right way. [26:11] - Digital Brand Kit is the first of its kind, turnkey branding system solution that is made for personal brands and women entrepreneurs. [27:29] - Nadine lists all the things included in the Digital Brand Kit, including podcast elements and social media posts. [29:06] - The brand elements are all provided in PowerPoint so they are user friendly. [31:40] - Go to DigitalBrandKit.com/Elyse and use the code elysearcher to get 10% off.
