It was so great to have a conversation with Ben West this week on the podcast, where we talk all things mental health! After tragically losing his younger brother to suicide, Ben began campaign for increasing awareness, promoting positive change, influencing the government, and altering laws within the mental health space. Mental health is universal in its impact and effects everyone, however there is still a very clear lack of funding and education in order to tackle the huge struggles being faced by thousands.We discuss the consistent tendency to separate mental and physical health issues, when in fact they so often exist as intertwined, and need to be treated with equal importance. At present Ben is focusing particularly on universities and schools as social spaces in which mental health care is needed more than ever, with the largest killer of teenagers horrifically remaining to be suicide. Conscious to not simply call for change but offer suggestions, Ben and I highlight the specific solutions he is hoping to take to government in order to produce active change and save lives. We additionally explore the power of therapy as preventative medicine (but simultaneously the serious need for increased support in this area), dropping out of university, how Ben used positive campaigning to heal from his grief, the positive and negative aspects of social media, and an in-depth discussion surrounding diet culture, eating disorders, and the fitness industry. Associate professor Jochen Mierau’s background is in economics, but as a founding member of the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health, he is applying his expertise to a new discipline. Health outcomes vary from one nation to the next, but zooming in on the level of neighbourhoods can shed light on best practices that can be applied on a city or regional level. Mierau says that public health is not a spectator sport, and in our conversation about the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of this academic field, in honour of the school’s namesake, he talks about how health care interventions effectively amount to a form of activism.

Together, we talk about health injustices faced by Black mothers and the amazing work of the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. In addition, we talk about the importance of Reproductive Justice frameworks and the brilliant work that Dr. McLemore has done and continues to imagine with love for the health and well-being of Black mothers. Bio: At the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Monica McLemore is an assistant professor in the Family Health Care Nursing Department, an affiliated scientist with Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, and a member of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. She maintains clinical practice as a public health and staff nurse at San Francisco General Hospital in the Women's Options Center. McLemore's research is geared toward understanding women's health and wellness across the lifespan. She is an elected member of the governing council for Population Reproductive and Sexual Health section of the American Public Health Association and a recipient of the 2015 teaching award from the American College of Nurse Midwives. She received the 2018 Person of the Year Award from the Abortion Care Network. Her work embraces complex and intersectional problems associated with sexual and reproductive health, including health disparities, stigma, incarceration, unintended pregnancy, and difficulty accessing services.
Is the new public health activism different from the old one? I address this question because we are in 2018 and that 50 years ago, 1968 remains the symbolic year of a transformative decade, the sixties, from which public health emerged profoundly transformed. Today there is a new public health activism challenges which challenges injustices. How different is the new activism from the older one? My guests are Prof Nick Freudenberg, from CUNY, and Prof Jeanne Stellman, from Columbia, both public health scientists who were student activists in the sixties, and Kelsey Schertz, who is currently a MPH student.

The Irish are known for being lucky… But does that luck hold out when it comes to celiac disease? The prevalence of celiac disease among the Iris is 1:100, about the same as the rest of the world. And if you are a redhead of Irish descent, there is a good chance that you are an HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 gene carrier. Today, the Gluten Free RN explores Irish ancestry and celiac disease, discussing how the Potato Famine led to a change in diet for much of the surviving population. She walks us through a paper published by Irish College of General Practitioners explaining the clinical presentations and complications of celiac disease. Nadine shares her experience running the Dublin marathon and the health consequences she suffered after touring the Guinness brewery. When the Gluten Free RN went on a gluten-free diet 11 years ago, her thyroid settled down and the associated symptoms and disorders—Graves’ disease, weight gain and hair loss—resolved. While these numbers are on the decline in every other developed nation, pregnant women in the US are at greater risk of dying than they were in recent years.
