Today we welcome special guest Laura Tamblyn-Watts, CEO of CanAge and Author of “Let's Talk about Aging Parents: A Real-Life Guide to Solving Problems with 27 Essential Conversations” . Laura tackles the topic of an aging population, how it could impact the financial advisor community and discusses other aging and generational trends and issues. Twenty years from now, about 1 in 4 Canadians will be 65 years or older. Canadians are living longer, and the sandwich generation is very prevalent these days where people are taking care of their parents, grandparents while also caring for their own kids. Laura notes the importance of having those crucial conversations with your aging loved ones about their finances, living situations and any medical issues. Financial advisors can help their aging clientele by preparing the family with any “what if” scenarios, possibly financial scams, establishing executors and helping prevent family arguments before they begin. Animal Forms is a project is all about empathy, about remembering how to be in connection with the other-than-human world. As Miki asks, “aims to explore how we (humans) can imagine ourselves in the place of the other people we share our planet with. How might our thoughts and actions change if we practiced seeing the world through another's eyes?” Miki Tamblyn has created a project where folks can practice being an other-than-human animal. What does that look like? We are invited to sit in the woods by ourselves with a mask, a journal and pen, a camera, and a mirror and take on being the animal whose face we put on. We sat down at the site of the project, along the Eramosa River in Guelph to discuss inspiration, project formation, overall response to the project and its goals, as well as the experience of embodiment of another form of life. There was really so much to say, but you'll have to listen to hear it all. To learn more : Animal Forms pageIn depth look at Joanna Macy's Council of All Beings

When it comes to medical conditions and healing, Christians hold a range of views from the intervention of doctors and medicine, alternative practices and healing that comes from God. I am not a doctor, so I would never give medical advice but would always encourage people to take a threefold approach to getting help.First, we ask God for help in all things. Secondly, we investigate and utilize good medicine and thirdly we look at alternative methods when the first two are not yielding a result. Some will try alternative before mainstream and that's their choice.I bring this up today as we consider that the spiritual life of a person may be affected by physical and mental conditions. I believe that God heals, and today's guest passes the test in my mind for a verifiable miracle from God.Josh Tamblyn was healed of schizophrenia. We're going to hear his story and also learn about his present involvement in ministry.

During covid many issues were highlighted but nothing as significant as elderly abuse which saw a 250% increase. This is unacceptable and as a society we must look at how we change the conversation. Join us as we speak with Laura Tamblyn Watts Founder and CEO of CanAge, Canada's national senior advocacy organization. Laura is a passionate advocate on a variety of urgent issues affecting older Canadians, including long term care and home care, financial security, elder abuse, health care, ageism, and inclusion of marginalized communities. She spent over 20 years defending the rights and dignity of older people as a lawyer and thought leader and today she is the voice on aging issues and is frequently sought after as a media commentator. Laura shares with us her recipe to support our senior community, how to find purpose and engagement at an older age. She also highlights the importance of taking a view from how you would want to be treated upon entering senior years. She helps us navigate the difficult conversation if you suspect elder abuse and the different steps you can take in supporting someone living with abuse. She also shares with us how ageism is impacted in the work force and what you can do about it. Organizations don't typically look at older employees when crafting DEI policy as it usually looks at younger generations or women but ageism should always be included in those policies. This is how we start the change the narrative. If you have additional questions about ageism, elder abuse, etc. Laura shares a number of resources during our conversation or you can reach out to her and her team for support. There may be a temptation in some circles to dismiss intuition as witchy, folkloric, or unscientific but there's actually a ton of science around this. Our guest, author, actress and director, Amber Tamblyn will guide us through this. Tamblyn argues that intuition is a trainable skill but that this south-of-the-neck intelligence is often obscured by being too stuck in our heads and out of touch with our bodies. Tamblyn has been nominated for Emmy®, Golden Globe, and Independent Spirit Awards. Her work in television spans over two decades including starring roles on House M.D., and Two and a Half Men. On the big screen, she starred in movies such as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and 127 Hours. She's written seven books, including her latest, which is called Listening in the Dark: Women Reclaiming the Power of Intuition. In this episode we talk about:How she defines intuition, and the role it plays as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious parts of our mindsWhy we are conditioned to validate rational intelligence over intuitive intelligence The gut/brain connection, and why the enteric nervous system is known as the “second brain”Practical tips for getting better at listening to our bodiesThe role of meditation in boosting intuitionThe scientific research that points towards the importance of having a relationship with nature, and how this can improve our intuitionThe relationship between intuition and creativityHow we should think about dream lifeWhat to do when you're not sure whether you should trust your gutHow to recognize the difference between anxiety and intuitionAnd why our society has downplayed the importance of intuition, which has been a tool used against women and menFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/amber-tamblyn-555See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hilary Brougher writes and directs films which blend the mechanics of original storytelling with gritty development of character. Through incisive dialogue; emotional harbingers of hope followed by inevitable glimpses of realism, Hilary's projects each carry with them a distinct piece of the era in which they were constructed. Growing up in Catskill, NY, she would frequent the cinema every week to catch a taste of the latest auteur to be featured, such as Fellini. Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Gillian Armstrong and Jane Campion were among the filmmakers she admired into the 80's. She made her film debut as writer and director of The Sticky Fingers of Time (Terumi Matthews; Nicole Zaray; James Urbaniak), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1997. Shot on Super 16 in Williamsburg, the film captured the scent of the 1950's noir genre in unparalleled unique fashion and flair through the vein of time-travel, feeling stuck and reminiscing about the future. Her next feature film, Stephanie Daley, was developed at the Sundance Lab and starred Academy Award Winner Tilda Swinton and Amber Tamblyn in lead roles; the film portrayed themes of trauma, pregnancy and the search for truth fueled by heavy emotions and performances which followed suit. Timothy Hutton, Denis O'Hare, Melissa Leo and Jim Gaffigan support the storyline in masterful and different ways. Hilary won the Waldo Scott Screenplay Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and Best Director at the Milan International Film Festival; Stephanie Daley was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, while Tamblyn was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her gripping performance as the title character. Hilary then adapted Jane Mendelsohn's novel Innocence into a feature film of the same name, which starred Kelly Reilly, Sophie Lane Curtis, Sarita Choudhury and delved into the teen horror, vampire fiction genre. Her latest film, South Mountain, is a poetic expanse on life, liberty and morality through lens of masterful performances by Talia Balsam, Scott Cohen and Andrus Nichols. She worked with “Sticky Fingers” collaborator, cinematographer and husband, Ethan Mass, on the project, and displayed the craft she has continued to execute with charm throughout her illustrious career. She is Professor of Professional Practice in Film at Columbia University. In our conversation, we discussed shooting on film; practical considerations in distribution; and directing some of the best actors of all time.Opening Credits: Delay 77 - Nothing at All; Closing Credits: HoliznaCC0 - The Dull Blade Of Repetition

Today's episode was one of my favourites to record – for the first time, we took Breakfast & Beyond on location, and I was lucky enough to spend the most blissful morning walking, listening, learning, swimming and sharing breakfast at the rugged Cornish coast with seaweed artist Julia Bird. Julia co-founded Molesworth & Bird with fellow artist and friend Melanie Molesworth back in 2018, translating their mutual love for art and the ocean into a business, hand-pressing seaweed that they forage from the shores of their local beaches – Julia in Cornwall, and Melanie in Dorset. From the original prints and postcards, Molesworth & Bird now create a range of seaweed-inspired homewares such as cushions, bags, enamelware and cards, along with hosting seaweed pressing workshops helping others to learn from, and be inspired by, the ocean. Sustainability is etched into each element of Julia's work – from the choice she made to step away from a busy London career as a magazine stylist, to the gentle rhythm of foraging, collecting and pressing seaweed, always with a deep consideration and respect for the natural environment. So for this episode, allow me to take you on a journey to the quiet corner of the Cornish coastline that is Julia's world, and I hope you enjoy - and learn - just as much from her story as I did. Breakfast at the beach consisted of Blackberry and Elderberry Tarlets with coffee, followed by Wild Mushroom & Rock Samphire Omelettes with Seaweed Pickled Veg. You can find these recipes along with more information about the themes that Julia and I discuss, via the Episode 17 web page. Huge thanks to photographer and dear friend John Hersey for capturing stunning images from our breakfast conversation, you can find a selection of John's images sharing the visual story via the Episode 17 web page, and do check out John's portfolio and Instagram. Thank you to the Cornish Seaberry Company for supporting this episode! Please do give their delicious, healthy, zingy drink VitaminSEA a try, and use the code BREAKFAST as you check out for a 10% discount. Thank you for listening, I'd love to know your thoughts on today's episode. You can join the conversation by getting in touch - tia@botelet.com or message via Instagram @breakfast_and_beyond. I hope you can join me for Breakfast & Beyond x Heligan LIVE on Thursday 13th October for a morning of delicious food, great company and rich conversations with my guest speakers on all things sustainability. Tickets can be found via this link: https://www.heligan.com/events/breakfast-beyond-at-heligan Please do subscribe to the podcast, and I'd be so grateful if you could rate and review this episode, then share it with people in your network who you know would enjoy listening. Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. The original Standells band was formed in 1962 by lead vocalist and keyboard player Larry Tamblyn, guitarist Tony Valentino, bass guitarist Jody Rich, and drummer Benny King. Tamblyn had previously been a solo performer, recording several 45 singles in the late 1950s and early 1960s including "Dearest", "Patty Ann", "This Is The Night", "My Bride To Be" and "Destiny" for Faro and Linda Records. The Standells released a string of garage rock singles in the mid to late 1960's, which are now regarded as proto-punk classics. They've inspired such groups as the Sex Pistols and Ramones. Everyone from Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and U2 to Minor Threat has covered Standells records. They are best known for their 1966 hit "Dirty Water", written by their manager, Ed Cobb. (Ed Cobb is also noted for writing "Tainted Love", a Gloria Jones song which became world famous when Soft Cell did a version of it.) "Dirty Water" is now the anthem of several Boston sports teams and is played following every Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins home win. The song is also listed in the Rock Hall of Fame as one of the 500 songs that shaped Rock & Roll. The Standells have continued to actively perform throughout the world and their recent concert performances have been receiving rave reviews. Laura Tamblyn Watts believes that the future of seniors' care is about taking a care-at-home approach, and reserving 24/7 long-term care for those who need it most. As CEO of CanAge, Laura works with long-term care operators, families, and caregivers to educate, inform, and advocate. Again this year, HIROC and AdvantAge Ontario have come together to produce the Inspiring Impact podcast mini-series. This four-part series highlights several amazing presenters at the 2022 AdvantAge Ontario convention, and explores the innovation and passion at play in the long-term care sector. Today HIROC's Michelle Holden and Philip De Souza sit down with Laura to chat about her presentation at the AdvantAge Ontario convention. Laura's session delves into the two national standards drafts on long-term care, highlighting what operators, families and caregivers need to know. Quotables: “Our organization, CanAge, represents seniors and really all Canadians as we age.” “In a perfect world our seniors' care would be informed by overcoming ageism.” “The good news is this, we know the recipe for improved seniors' care. We know we need to move to a care-at-home approach.” “Those walls of long-term care should be walls of safety and inclusion in community…” “I think as we are more multicultural and more diverse, we also need to understand that people don't just become heterogenous white men magically when they come into long-term care. And so a greater understanding of diversity and inclusion around gender, sexual orientation, sexual expression…” “The good news is it's not that hard, a human-based approach just means that we need to come together as diverse communities and support the planning of the physical space, the operations, and the programming. It allows us to be better.” “You don't want to miss the AdvantAge Ontario conference.” Mentioned in this Episode: AdvantAge Ontario CanAge Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes. As we prepare to launch our second season at iHeartRadio, we're revisiting some of Alec's favorite episodes from the archives. In this episode, Alec speaks with actor Russ Tamblyn. Russ was born in Los Angeles in the middle of the Depression to a chorus girl and a Broadway "song and dance man." His father had moved his growing family west to press his luck in the talkies. Russ was a showbiz kid and found his talent young: Cecil B DeMille cast him as the young King Saul in Samson and Delilah when he was just 13 years old. Stardom came at 19 in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, where he stole scenes with his goofy enthusiasm and astonishingly acrobatic dancing. But the role that will go down in history is Riff in West Side Story. Tamblyn took a part that could have been just a young tough, and imbued it with such nuance, such balance between aggression and vulnerability, that every Riff since has been held up to him. In this funny, revealing conversation, Tamblyn tells Alec what it was like being part of the old Hollywood contract system (he was an MGM property) -- plus which major Golden Age director was "overrated," and why he didn't stay a movie star. And of course, Tamblyn recounts his return to featured roles at the request of David Lynch, who cast him as Dr. Lawrence Jacoby in Twin Peaks. Solutions for the Future
US Manager Christine Munroe interviews Ashleigh Gardner, Wattpad's Head of Writer and Publisher Partnerships. Wattpad is a social media app with over 40 million monthly users around the world and growing. How can you take advantage of this community as a writer and reader? Listen in to learn about: What is Wattpad all about? A social media app for telling stories, all user-generated content. Currently attracts 40 million users per month, growing at a rate of over 1 new user per second. It's mostly readers – 90% of site users. Writers can use it to build reading communities. The longer a user is onsite as a reader, the more likely they are to become a writer. User demographics: 45% of users are 13-18. 40% are 18-30. Fastest-growing segment is women 25-35. A common misconception is that it's just teenagers. Wattpad is strong internationally. #2 country is the Philippines, where Wattpad is the #1 website and they have their own TV show 4 nights a week. A lot of the content is unfinished when it's first uploaded. The encouragement and acknowledgement from the Wattpad community inspires writers to keep going. It offers a very supportive, encouraging environment and culture. Readers are used to a rawness – think of it as a “digital campfire” more than a digital book – so they aren't critical in the same way as you see on other social media platforms. Why should authors post free content? Learn your audience. Grow your audience. Post a portion, or the first book in a series, then encourage readers to buy the rest elsewhere. What is a Wattpad success story? It's different for everyone, as every author is writing for different reasons. The most traditionally successful author is Anna Todd, who has become an internationally bestselling author. Tons of other young writers are gaining confidence every day from having tens of thousands of followers encouraging them to pursue writing opportunities. Brands are sponsoring stories, for example SourPatch Kids and Ouija Boards. How to succeed on Wattpad: follow other writers in your genre. See what they're doing, how they talk to their fans. Find your network – share on other social media outlets that you're posting on Wattpad. What does Wattpad do to combat piracy problems? They don't allow copy/pasting. Duplications are detected, reported, and removed quickly. Everything on Wattpad is date and time stamped, so it's very easy to prove the origin date. Ashleigh's favourite kind of fan fiction: high-brow commentary on contemporary events. Finding that line between real life and fan fiction when the line starts to blur is really interesting. At the end of the episode, we showcase a speech that Michael Tamblyn, Rakuten Kobo President, delivered at FutureBook 2015. FutureBook is an annual digital publishing conference that took place last week in London on December 4th. Tamblyn outlines what he sees as a "reader's bill of rights." We should be able to read: 1. Easily 2. Shamelessly 3. Freely (not meaning no cost, but in terms of time - free time to read in the midst of the distracting world) 4. Publicly 5. Privately In addition to analyzing, trying to understand, marketing to, segmenting, collecting information about readers, publishing professionals (including authors!) need to step back and think about how readers want to read. “Earn the right to the reader's attention… and we'll get to keep doing what we love.”
