Protein — how much do we need? What's the healthiest way to consume it? Can we get enough from plant-based diets? Until recent decades, protein hasn't been quite as prominent in public health discussions as sugar and fats. However, with longer lifespans emphasizing the importance of protein for long-term health, and growing confusion around the quality and quantity of protein needed, it has become a highly debated macronutrient. In ‘Your Brain On… Protein', we explore: • The brain health benefits (and general health benefits) of protein • Plant-based protein vs. meat protein, and supplements like protein powders • How much protein we really need to eat every day • Ways we can all introduce more protein into our diets • Why ‘health' influencers are suddenly recommending unusually high levels of protein consumption • How we measure the quality of proteins, including digestibility and absorption In this episode, we're joined by two fantastic nutrition experts: DR. MATTHEW NAGRA, nutritionist and science communicator. DR. ALAN FLANAGAN, esteemed nutrition scientist (previously featured in ‘Your Brain On… Sugar' and ‘Your Brain On… Fats' ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neurologists, scientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. In the 332nd episode of the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, we have an informative discussion with the distinguished authors of the 'Wisest Learners' series, Dr. Wallace and Dr. Artyom. We delve deep into the intersection of neuroscience, social and emotional learning, and its implications for personal growth and productivity. Listeners will discover invaluable insights on learning strategies, the role of emotions in cognitive control, and how environmental regularities shape memory and attention. See this interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/lk7jJZDqrPo Our conversation explores the significant developmental transitions children undergo around the age of 12 and the bewilderment many parents experience during this time. By discussing the principles laid out in their book, our guests illuminate the importance of a holistic approach to child development from an early age and its profound impact on academic performance and lifelong learning. Specific focus is given to the concept of 'automaticity', which simplifies complex cognitive functions in children. Moving on to practical application, the discussion underscores the critical role of granting children autonomy in their learning journey. Real-life examples highlight how granting autonomy in choices, like book selection, can inculcate a lifelong love for reading and writing. However, an important balance is emphasized to avoid stifling a child's natural curiosity with excessive parental control. A notable part of our conversation is an analogy comparing essential life skills to multivitamins, emphasizing the necessity for multiple principles in education rather than relying on single solutions. The role of parents in a child's education is underlined with varied involvement approaches and their effects. The interaction concludes with important practical suggestions for parents, emphasizing the importance of role-modelling and consistent communication with children. This enlightening episode provides a unique fusion of theoretical understanding and practical guidance, making it essential listening for anyone seeking to better understand how to nurture resilient and joyful learners. Whether you're a parent, educator, or just interested in the fascinating world of cognitive neuroscience, buckle up for this insightful journey into the art and science of parenting based on neuroscience and social and emotional learning. EPISODE #332 with Dr. Wallace Panlilio and Dr. Artyom Zinchenko “The Wisest Learners: Unleashing Neuroscience, Education, and Athletic Ability” we will cover: ✔ How a Cognitive Neuroscientist from Germany, met an experienced School Administrator in the Philippines, to create “The Wisest Learners” book series. ✔ How can we use an understanding of our brain, to bring the joy back into learning for our children and students? ✔ What KEY take-aways should we know about using our brain to be “wise” learners? ✔ How to apply these scientific principles in your school, workplace or sports environment to take your students/children to greater heights? On today's episode #332, we meet Dr. Wallace Panlilio II and Dr. Artyom Zinchenko, the authors of the Wisest Learners[i] Book Series. Dr. Artyom Ph.D is an accomplished author and cognitive neuroscientist with extensive experience in the field. He earned his Doctorate in Cognitive Neuroscience from the Max Plank Institute for Cognitive Human and Brain Sciences in Germany and is now a researcher and a faculty member at LMU in Munich. He's also a father of 2 children. Dr. Wallace is an experienced educator and entrepreneur with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Philippines and has served as a headmaster (school administrator) for 14 years. He holds 2 master's degrees in entrepreneurship and educational leadership and is always looking at ways to further optimize the results of the students in his schools. Without further ado, let's meet the authors of The Wisest Learners and see how they connect the most current brain research to the future success of our next generation. Welcome Dr. Wallace Panlilio and Dr. Zinchenko. Where have we reached you today? Thank you for meeting with me to share the vision of your Wisest Learners Book Series to help parents and teachers Unlock the Secrets for our next generation, using the most current neuroscience research. Before we get to the questions, I wonder if you could tell me more about who you are, and where this vision for youth began…especially as helping our youth has also been my life's mission. Can you describe the inspiration behind "The Wisest Learners: Parents Edition" and how did you intend this series to impact parents and educators? Q1: How can we all use the principles from your book to help our children not just excel academically but also find joy in learning? Q2: In a world filled with information, how does your holistic approach benefit parents/educators to nurture well-rounded learners who can thrive in diverse situations that we know (ad adults) they are going to face? How does your research-based approach give your readers the confidence that the strategies you recommend are backed by science and can truly make a difference in their child's education? Could you discuss the long-term benefits of wise learning for children as they grow into adulthood, not just academically but in their careers and personal lives? Q3: In terms of practical application, how can we begin implementing the book's strategies with our everyday interactions with our children? Can you share an anecdote from the book that illustrates the impact of unconventional connections in learning? How does the book propose to challenge conventional wisdom in education and parenting? The book discusses the integration of technology in learning. What are your views on balancing digital tools with traditional learning methods? Q4: I'm interested in your forthcoming book, Wisest Learners to develop a child's athletic potential. Can you tell me more about what you cover in this book? Today's podcast features coach Bobby Whyte. Bobby is an athletic performance and basketball skill enhancement trainer in northern New Jersey. He trains players from multiple sides of the athletic equation (strength, speed, skill, general physical development) and has been known for the "good drill" ideology and training system. In the world of modern sports performance, coach Bobby Whyte's approach stands out for its comprehensive nature. It's not just about 'speed' or 'skill ', but a balanced integration of all aspects of athleticism. This approach reassures athletes that their training is not one-dimensional, but a wide-spanning pyramid of development. In today's episode, Bobby speaks on his process to help take basketball players to the edge of their ability, speaking from his perspective as both a basketball skills coach and athletic development coach. This show hits on filling the right bucket an athlete needs, at the right time, taking an integrated view on transference to the game itself, versus a more compartmentalized view. He also keys into the 7 first principles he uses, and refers to, to help push athletes to the overall edge of their ability. Also discussed are the importance of unstructured play, creativity and fun in the development process. I love these conversations because they help to push the envelope of how the entire athlete training process unfolds, not only on a singular skill or strength side of things. They don't have fear of the unknown." - Bobby Whyte" (12:33) "The more I'm willing to step into this kind of experimental role of guidance with these athletes, I start to see it doesn't matter as much about what I'm doing, but the intention behind what I'm doing. And that's bringing them to the edge of their ability in the direct line of what their goals and dreams are." - Bobby Whyte (35:03) "Kids that couldn't do something, now they can do something. All right, now they can do that. Let's raise the bar a little bit higher. Let's make it a little bit more complex. What else can they do? What else can they do? What else can they do? And that's what I'm. That's it." - Bobby Whyte (44:00) “My guess would be that the best athletes, right, their time (sprinting while dribbling) a ball is a lot closer to their time without a ball than, than the lesser basketball players” - Bobby Whyte (46:39) "That is normal. I am beginning Season 2 of my podcast by speaking to the amazing Sabrina Sinha. Sabrina and I competed in biathlon, athletics and cross country together when we were younger, and she has gone on to accomplish many incredible achievements in the athletic field, representing GB & NI in events such as; the European Youth Championships, the World Youth Games and the European Cross Country Championships. In the peak of her condition, Sabrina began to suffer with endometriosis in mid 2016, an extremely painful condition which significantly impacted her life as an athlete and also personally. In this episode, Sabrina and I discuss the difficulty of working with the 'invisibility' of mental and physical illnesses, coping with internal and external doubt, and cultivating resilience and gratitude through adversity. Sometimes we need to take a big step backwards to allow us to move forward in our lives, and Sabrina is an incredible example of someone who held on to hope and didn't lose faith in her individual athletic ability despite challenging circumstances. Sabrina is presently loving running more than ever, achieved a personal best time this summer for the first time in four years and is working towards her long term goal of achieving a senior GB vest! It was amazing to speak to her and we really hope that you enjoy this episode! Kelli and Cody Weight are some of the most dear people in the world to my family. As we explained last Episode (9 if you’re wondering), Kelli and Cody took Jared and I under their wings and they taught us that value of a full life that has plenty of room for play, especially physical play. These two people have had full lives of accomplishments and are both talented athletes on multiple podiums. They share their love of just about everything with others, and they pass on their knowledge to people willing to put in the work, and they take great pride in the coaching they are able to share with others. They are some of the most generous, genuine people, and their example is a legacy in itself. I hope you find value in what they share today. These two were so much fun to have on an interview and after not seeing them in quite a while I was so happy to see them and chat once again. I wanted to pinpoint some quick takeaways from todays episodes: First: Positivity, patience, and consistency will take you far. These three core values Cody and Kelli mentioned multiple times, and I assure you they practice what they preach. Next, finding something you can get excited about and develop a love for is highly important. It may change over time, but finding that golden ticket will help you keep up your positive momentum and give you something everyday to look forward to. Third: Find your people. Find a cheering section. Surround yourself with people who cheer you on, and make a community. Find your people to celebrate with you, celebrate your abilities, and give you a helping hand where you need it. Finally, I know they did not share too much about this, but their overall message that I always take away is that life is meant to be joyfully lived. Make the joy for yourself, use the joy in your life, and share your joy with others and your life will be a rich one well-lived and worthwhile to the one living it: that’s you. Thank you for lending us your ears today. I hope you and yours are safe, healthy and I hope to add just a little more light and life to your life today.

Inspired by an article written by Fred Bowen of the Washington Post titled "Athletic Ability is just a part of success in sports," we hear what 5 high school coaches are looking for from players beyond athletic ability. [spp-player] We also hear about what Tom Statham from Manchester United's Youth program has to say about essentially the same subject. Time and again, we hear that what separates the good from the great is Character. Coaches from high schools to the pros are echoing this message over and over again: talent isn't enough. Youth wanting to participate - whether in higher competitive level soccer or in life in general - must develop core character skills around sportsmanship, teamwork, empathy, leadership, and more. In this episode, we review multiple coach's input and talk about being intentional with development of character.
