Join us as we welcome Dr. Maria Rusca, a senior lecturer in global development at the University of Manchester, who brings her extensive research on urban inequalities and environmental governance to our discussion. Maria will illuminate the pressing issues of gendered access to water and sanitation services in sub-Saharan African cities, with a poignant case study of Cape Town's severe drought from 2015 to 2018. Understand how socioeconomic disparities shape the vulnerabilities and resilience of different communities during extreme climate events, and why equitable urban planning is essential for future sustainability. Our conversation then shifts to the intricate challenges of water management, both in Cape Town and globally, including the United States. We uncover how merely increasing water supply is insufficient without addressing the underlying socioeconomic inequalities that impact water consumption and access. Maria's insights urge us to reconsider societal priorities and the role of sustainable consumption and climate justice in effective climate adaptation strategies. This episode critiques the limitations of technocratic fixes and advocates for more holistic, structural changes. Finally, we spotlight the remarkable advocacy efforts of Shack Dwellers International (SDI) in improving water and sanitation services in informal settlements. Discover how SDI's innovative use of saving groups and data collection campaigns bring affordable, high-quality services to low-income residents, who often pay more for inferior water services. The episode also extends the discussion to developed nations, examining the broader implications of climate change and the need for resilience and equity in our responses. Maria shares inspiring examples of human adaptability, encouraging listeners to remain hopeful and proactive in confronting the challenges ahead. What in the world is a psychedelics podcast doing talking about “personal style” and fashion?! This has to be the first. But discovering your personal style is identity work that requires vulnerability. It's a deeply meaningful journey of self discovery. If you don't see the connection now, then you will by the end of this podcast. In this episode, I am introducing a concept around the different stages of psychedelic integration: There is the “heavy lifting” stage where we're doing deep work to significantly improve our lives, followed by the “refinement” stage which is a lighter process of fine tuning. For me, this refinement process is showing up in my journey to discover my personal style. The misalignment between my identity and my wardrobe has come up a few times during psychedelic journeys, and I am finally addressing it so that the outside is a true reflection of my inside. I also make the connection between the responsibility to find your personal style, living a values-based life, and sustainable consumption.Topics Covered:The “heavy lifting” vs “refinement” stages of psychedelic integrationThe connection between life satisfaction and values-alignmentHow refinement is showing up for me through personal styleHow personal style came up during my psychedelic experiencesWhy I stopped caring about fashion during my healing chapterWhy I started caring about fashion again after my healing chapterFast fashion overconsumption as a result of not knowing my personal styleMy core values that are aligned with knowing my personal styleMy journey to discover my personal style so farConsumption habits and making wise purchase decisionsShow Links:1:1 Coaching with LanaEarth Runners - 10% off with LANAEpisode 45: My Iboga Journey (Spotify | Apple | YouTube)Episode 60: My Shipibo Ayahuasca Journey (Spotify | Apple | YouTube)Episode 79: My 5-MeO-DMT Journey (Spotify | Apple | YouTube)Wear It Well by Allison Bornstien [book]Sustain This! Did you know there are over 6,000 transactions per SECOND?   That's a whole lot of consumption going on. Now, can you imagine what a difference it would make if only 1/10 of those purchases were made on sustainable products and brands?   In this episode of The Darin Olien Show, I chat with Douglas Sabo, Chief Sustainability Officer at Visa about their sustainability efforts to diminish the carbon footprint emitted from the consumption propelled by their brand. From developing the Green Bonds Framework to reporting back on their sustainability efforts and partnering with brands that make sustainability accessible for consumers, Visa is working hard to ensure we are moving forward towards a greener planet.   Douglas Sabo is Chief Sustainability Officer at Visa Inc. In this role, Sabo leads the development and oversight of Visa's global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts, including Visa's ESG strategy, framework, reporting, and stakeholder engagement. Sabo also leads Visa's initiatives in environmental sustainability, human rights, and other areas of responsible business. In sustainability, Sabo's work includes building out Visa's initiatives in the company's operations as well as in empowering sustainable living and commerce.     What we discuss:   06:36: Doug's involvement in Down To Earth 08:36: How did Doug end up at Visa? 14:28: What is Doug most excited about? 18:15: How does sustainability fit into Visa's efforts? 31:30: What green credit cards does Visa associate with? 35:54: What is the Green Bond framework? 40:34: How important is corporate accountability? 54:09: Where is the next sustainability opportunity? 57:32: What kind of collaboration is happening among industries and brands for sustainability?     Key Takeaways:   Oftentimes, corporations are guilty of greenwashing and tricking consumers into believing they're making a good decision by picking these brands. While the truth tends to come to light at some point, corporate accountability ensures they are doing what they claim to do.   Brands and industries must collaborate and cooperate to reduce their emission footprint. While it has started happening, it tends to get very competitive as certain brands compete close to each other. However, cooperating and collaborating in this way allows them to change landscapes and move forward.   Moving forward is the antidote to changing towards a better world. While most of our consumption is unsustainable, it doesn't mean it has to be like that or stay that way. Finding solutions and implementing solutions is the way to move forward toward a greener world.    Find more from Visa:   Website: https://usa.visa.com/about-visa/esg.html Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visa_us/   Find more from Darin:   Website: https://darinolien.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Darinolien/ Book: https://darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book/ Down to Earth: https://darinolien.com/down-to-earth/   More links:   Shop Methodology at  https://www.gomethodology.com/ and use the code DARIN at checkout.    Learn more about The Dirt Locker® by visiting www.dirtlocker.com    Shop Bite and use code DARIN20 to save 20% on your Bite subscription: https://trybite.com/darin   LIMITED OFFER: Switch up to US Bank Altitude CONNECT Visa Signature card to earn 4X points on travel, and at gas stations and EV charging stations, and 2X points at grocery stores, dining, and streaming services. As a leading international banking player, how can and should we address environmental and societal issues in order to rethink our business and have a positive impact?   In 2017, it was with this objective in mind that Antoine Sire returned to the BNP Paribas Group and became Head of Company Engagement BNP Paribas Group.  Indeed, he devoted himself to writing a book on cinema, having been Director of Communication at BNP Paribas for 16 years.   Throughout this episode of On The Way, Antoine Sire shares his experience and the role of BNP Paribas in supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.  He explains that the work began from a societal and social perspective. BNP Paribas has formed an important partnership with many associations working for social inclusion.   In 2010, awareness of the importance of environmental issues is growing, with the creation of the “Climate & Biodiversity Initiative” by the BNP Paribas Foundation, in order to financially support research on climate change. This initiative allowed the bank to better understand climate issues and to highlight that the model based on the use of natural resources without limits is no longer viable.  Antoine Sire also sheds light on the role of banks in supporting the economy, in particular by granting loans to businesses and individuals. Energy demand has been increasing since the beginning of industrialization. The demand for funding to meet this demand is therefore correlated and growing. From now on, BNP Paribas has made strong commitments to switch its outstanding loans to finance fossil fuels to low-carbon energies.   Antoine Sire also explains how the BNP Paribas Group is structured to support the low-carbon transition of all its clients, including the creation of the Low-Carbon Transition Group led by Séverine Mateo. This group, which will eventually have 250 expert employees, is dedicated to:   to large corporate clients, to support them in their transition through the decarbonation of  their activities and investment in new activities;  Innovative companies that are accelerating the transition, to support them in their development;   to institutional investors, to steer the deployment of their capital towards the low-carbon transition.    BNP Paribas also deploys a model by which each company is evaluated not only on financial criteria but also on criteria related to: climate, biodiversity, respect for human rights, local impact and business ethics.  During his testimony at our microphone, Antoine Sire emphasizes the importance of the transformation that we must all do and reminds us that the bank is at the heart of all these transformations since it is obvious that more responsible consumption is absolutely central. Consumption is based on the acquisition of more responsible goods and relies on new modes of consumption such as leasing, the circular economy, or the improvement of housing.  Discover in this episode Antoine Sire's journey, his ecological awakening and the evolution of the BNP Paribas Group towards more sustainable and responsible activities, as well as the challenges and challenges ahead.     Very nice listening!

“Marketers need to get into the nitty gritty and learn about lifecyle assessments and how they are used, their limitations and their advantages, it might seem boring - but it's really, really important.” In this episode, we're joined by Oliver-Bealby-Wright, Lead, Consumers in the Energy System who formerly led Consumers International's GreenCommerce project in 2022 on improving consumer sustainability information. Consumers International is a membership body with over 200 members across 100 countries, dedicated to defending the rights of consumers. Oliver shares their whole systems approach, working across critical areas - considering labelling, data, the information lifecyle alongside the product lifecycle, ecommerce and the digital environment, where digital nudging can support, but also considering the risk, greenwashing and misleading claims and the role of retailers and consumers. We cover A LOT, and Oliver shares a very comprehensive overview of the scale of the challenges, but also the scale of the opportunity. “Marketing has a big role to play in making information ‘sing'. “ All the time we bring the context back to marketing and communication, and Oliver is clear that marketing has a big part to play - but that there aren't really any short cuts when it comes to transparency, substantiation and understanding regulation and where principles and policies are justified and where they are not. “it's about education and upskilling - there are no short cuts.” And we couldn't agree more. Oliver shares that sustainable consumption is a basic right of consumers and of course, whilst consumers have an important role to play towards a fair and accountable transition to net zero, so too do retailers and so we discuss their role as gatekeepers, the challenge of compliance by design and the risks and opportunity of ecommerce, micro-targeting and personalised messaging. When it comes to collaboration, there's a need for many bodies and actors to be working cohesively to not only create coherent policies - but then to be translated into practice, no simple task given there is just so much room for interpretation. And that leads us to data, innovation and unusual partnerships. “More transparency alone is not going to get us there – it's not going to close the intention action gap, which is even more true in online shopping environments than in person. Some folks are doing interesting things, layering information in the online environment, simplifying choices along the consumer journey to avoid information overload - because when things become too complex or there's just too much to navigate through, people switch off . And if they switch off, they're never going to reach the important and useful information that matters.” Trust us… there's just so much wisdom and so many takeaways in this conversation. Listen in for yourself, tell us what you think… share your viewpoints. We love to hear what's landed for you - or what you agree with, disagree with. “Marketers need to get into the nitty gritty and learn about lifecyle assessments and how they are used, their limitations and their advantages, it might seem boring - but it's really, really important.”In this episode, we're joined by Oliver-Bealby-Wright, Lead, Consumers in the Energy System who formerly led Consumers International's GreenCommerce project in 2022 on improving consumer sustainability information. “it's about education and upskilling - there are no short cuts.” And we couldn't agree more.Oliver shares that sustainable consumption is a basic right of consumers and of course, whilst consumers have an important role to play towards a fair and accountable transition to net zero, so too do retailers and so we discuss their role as gatekeepers, the challenge of compliance by design and the risks and opportunity of ecommerce, micro-targeting and personalised messaging. When it comes to collaboration, there's a need for many bodies and actors to be working cohesively to not only create coherent policies - but then to be translated into practice, no simple task given there is just so much room for interpretation. And that leads us to data, innovation and unusual partnerships.“More transparency alone is not going to get us there – it's not going to close the intention action gap, which is even more true in online shopping environments than in person. Some folks are doing interesting things, layering information in the online environment, simplifying choices along the consumer journey to avoid information overload - because when things become too complex or there's just too much to navigate through, people switch off . And if they switch off, they're never going to reach the important and useful information that matters.”Trust us… there's just so much wisdom and so many takeaways in this conversation.Listen in for yourself, tell us what you think… share your viewpoints. In this episode of About Sustainability…Bob kicked off a new experimental format, tentatively called “Sustainability Afoot”.  The concept is simple: go for a walk near the headquarters of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Hayama, Japan, and discuss some basic questions about a topic, concept, or methodology that IGES works in. The first episode of this format is about the concept of the “circular economy.”  Yasuhiko Hotta, Programme Director of the Sustainable Consumption and Production unit at IGES, explained the circular economy concept, gave a few examples, and talked about some of IGES' work on the topic.  This naturally led to marine plastic litter, and the ongoing work of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on Plastic Pollution that came out of UNEA 5.2 (the second part of the 5th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly), a conference that we discussed on this podcast  before and after it happened. The sound quality of this format will not match that of  our regular episodes.  We'll try to get better at recording these types of episodes, but the audio will never be as clean. Whether  we should do more episodes like this, or the sound quality will make you stop listening, we want to know.  Please tweet us at @IGES_EN to let us know what you think!About our guest:Yasuhiko Hotta is Programme Director of the Sustainable Consumption and Production unit at IGES. His expertise includes 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) policies, sustainable resource management, extended producer responsibility (EPR), the circular economy, and plastics. "About Sustainability..." is a podcast brought to you by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), an environmental policy think-tank based in Hayama, Japan. About Sustainability…

What's in an SDG?In an effort to more deeply understand the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), over the next few months, the About Sustainability… podcast will zoom in on each of them in turn. We will invite experts to join us and parse out more about an individual goal, where we are in terms of achieving it, and the challenges it presents. We will also discuss how each goal, including those that are not environmentally oriented, is linked to environmental sustainability. In the first of these SDG-focused episodes, André and Erin spoke to Atsushi Watabe (who we call “Watabe-san” at the office) and Dwayne Appleby, two IGES experts who have studied and written about SDG1, on ending all forms of poverty everywhere. We covered what is meant by “extreme poverty” and “relative poverty”; which aspects of poverty have been left out or not explicitly addressed in SDG1; the effects of poverty alleviation on the environment; to what extent we are making progress toward alleviating poverty (and how reliable the figures are); how poverty and inequality or inequity are linked; the possible drivers of poverty; and potential solutions.Related links:UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs' SDG 1 pageSustainable Ways of Living Issue Brief Series (Atsushi Watabe)One Planet Network Sustainable Lifestyles and Education ProgrammeSDG1 reading list:Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa (Dambisa Moyo)Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty (Abhijit V. How to enable more responsible and more sustainable consumption when you are a giant in the distribution of sports products? This is one of the questions answered by Yann Carré, Leader of Rental Experiences at Decathlon, based on the company's mission, which is to "make the benefits of sport accessible to as many people as possible". While the notions of SAAS (Software As A Service) are now well known and understood, transposing them to capital goods, particularly sports equipment, is a major challenge. We then speak of Sport As A Use, where use is favored over possession and allows the sports consumer to try out different practices, without investing heavily. This also allows adaptation to the evolution of the level of practice. The brand's best-selling children's bike is indeed a very good example. Why buy it when almost every year you have to take a bigger one? With rental offers, the consumer uses the product for the duration of his choice and returns the product when he no longer needs it. This product is then checked, repaired and re-rented to another customer or sold second-hand at Decathlon. The benefit is obvious: This greatly increases the cost/use ratio. A product is used more often and the drain on natural resources is greatly reduced since the same product is used more and longer thanks to the repair. Through this episode of On the Way, Yann shares with us the path followed by his team to create these new offers, the factors that have favored their development and the next steps in Decathlon's ambitious roadmap on these crucial subjects! Very good listening!

In this episode of About Sustainability…, Simon and Erin followed up with Andre and IGES colleague Amila Abeynayaka, an expert on plastics management, on some of the recent outcomes from UNEA-5.2, the second part of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).At this year's UNEA, governments managed to find consensus on 14 decisions and resolutions, and we discussed a couple of these, namely on nature-based solutions (NBS) and on plastics. First, we discussed the decision on nature-based solutions. We heard Andre's insights on the concept, where it comes from, what it means and why it may have been difficult to agree on. Then, Amila discussed with us the much-awaited resolution on ending plastic pollution, which was another important outcome of UNEA 5.2. Apart from the details of the resolution, we also talked about why we are getting such a resolution now, its focus and why it is difficult to get away from plastics entirely. Throughout our conversation, we discovered that all these issues are interlinked in interesting ways. FairTEC, a collective of European companies working together to create and offer sustainable and ethical integrated smartphone solutions, sees the European Commission's public consultation on the “Sustainable Consumption of Goods – Promoting Repair and Reuse” as a promising opportunity to effect real change. FairTEC With the initiative, the Commission aims to amend the existing Sale of Goods Directive and to possibly introduce a separate new legislative proposal on the right to repair. FairTEC welcomes this effort, but notes that legislation centered around design inevitably leads to the creation of new products. FairTEC therefore wants to emphasize that sustainable consumption starts with continued use of and a pride of ownership in the items we already own. Bearing this in mind, FairTEC proposes the following measures to improve the longevity and repairability of mobile devices. The European public As is already mandated for the alcohol and tobacco industry, the electronic industry's social and environmental impact should be made more transparent. Specifically, FairTEC proposes promoting awareness of the impacts of manufacturing and encouraging moderate use of smartphones. In addition, a tax weighted by the warranty and life-cycle of a device, as well as a lower VAT on used or repaired hardware, should encourage users to prefer used devices and boost the circular economy. Hardware FairTEC supports a more uniform construction of smartphones, facilitating the disassembly and assembly of devices. This would democratize access to repair services and encourage users to use their phones longer. In addition, manufacturers should commit to keeping spare parts available for a longer period of time. Regular checks on manufacturers and service providers could ensure that these measures are being implemented. Software FairTEC proposes that every phone should ideally receive software updates, security patches and bug fixes for at least five years to help prevent software obsolescence. FairTEC also suggests making an unlockable and re-lockable bootloader a mandatory provision. Users should be given the option to switch to alternative operating systems, which respect their privacy by not collecting personal data and increase the longevity of devices. Telecom operators and electronic resellers Telecom operators should extend VoLTE and VoWi-fi support to all compatible phones, as old 2G and 3G networks are being retired with the 5G rollout. FairTEC also supports the use of recycled or reconditioned antennas and the replacement of old equipment with more energy-efficient equipment. Finally, recycling initiatives should not act as commercial levers to entice users to buy a new phone. We propose that telecom operators and electronics resellers only offer commercial value for recycled devices older than two or three years. Telecom operators must also be prohibited from linking the payment period for purchased hardware to the term of mobile phone contracts. This practice ties people into long-term contracts by offering new devices when airtime contracts end. This is the second episode of Market with Me Quikly. We created this podcast to inform, educate and assist marketers in doing their jobs just a little bit better, which became even more necessary once the coronavirus pandemic had the entire country on standstill. The stock market took a hit, people began losing their jobs, a stimulus package is now in the works. Not to mention, tens of thousands are dying around the world from COVID-19. So, right now, we're in the thick of it. And it looks like we're going to be here for awhile. We've been hearing from marketers firsthand just how difficult it is to navigate doing their jobs in this environment. Which is why I called Professor James Wilkie -- at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to teaching students, he's a consumer psychologist. His research examines how environmental cues and social norms can (automatically) influence consumers. His work has been published in some of marketing and psychology's lead journals -- in addition to The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, NPR and many more. The Marketing Science Institute's Academic Trustees named his article titled "Is Eco-Friendly Unmanly? The Green-Feminine Stereotype and Its Effect on Sustainable Consumption” a "must-read" for marketers. His projects have explored 1) the impact of gender perceptions and identity on consumer preferences of men vs. women, 2) how qualitative aspects of numeric information can bias consumers and 3) how activating "consumer" mindsets changes judgments and decisions.

During her time at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Candace led the delivery of the Inter-jurisdictional Adaptation Working Group and contributed to the development of Victoria's second statewide Climate Change Adaptation Plan. Candace is passionate about building Melbourne's and its community's resilience to the impacts of climate change to ensure Melbourne remains a great city to live in and enjoy. Dr Anthony Kent (sustainable transport policy) Anthony Kent is lecturer and researcher with the Centre for Urban Research at RMIT. He is currently researching the place of second-tier cities in broader settlement patterns with a focus on environmental and economic outcomes and potential. Dr Georgia Garrad Georgia Gerrard is a Research Fellow with the Interdisciplinary Conservation Science Research Group at RMIT. She is a quantitative ecologist and has worked on projects related to imperfect detectability and informative Bayesian priors in ecology. She is currently working on a project investigating better planning for biodiversity in the urban fringe; one of four native grassland projects funded by The Myer Foundation. This project aims to address incompatibilities between native grassland conservation and urban development in Melbourne, by improving prospects for grassland conservation within housing developments, and investigating alternative urban development scenarios that mitigate impacts on existing grasslands. Her research interests also include the use of science to inform environmental policy, adaptive management and structured decision making. Professor Usha Iyer-Raniger (Circular economy/ building apartment and housing design standards for a changing climate) Usha is a Professor at the School of Property, Construction and Project Management at RMIT University. She is also the Co-Lead of the United Nations One Planet Network's (OPN) Sustainable Buildings and Construction Programme (SBC), (10YFP) on Sustainable Consumption and Production aligned with SDG12. She has been involved in key projects on sustainability and circularity in the built environment since her commencement at RMIT University at the Centre for Design. Her research projects include national and international projects. Associate Professor Andrew Butt Andrew is a lecturer with over 20 years practical experience in planning. Andrew's research includes investigations of the processes and practice of planning in non-metropolitan settings. He is particularly interested in the way in which land use planners operate as professionals in a context where drivers of change often sit outside of the limits of planning action. He is presently developing a collaborative project developing scenario modelling for future population and land use change, impacts and policy options in central Victoria, Australia. These include a focus on the politics of planning for intensive agricultural systems. He is also involved in research on planning for agricultural systems, particularly intensive agriculture.Facilitator/ Moderator Dr Mittul Vahanvati Mittul works at the intersection of environmentally sustainable buildings, disaster recovery and community resilience. She is currently the lead researcher working with rural communities in Victoria to co-produce their climate resilience action plan. She is also part of a team of researchers involved in a large-scale action-research project in the Solomon Islands, 'Climate Resilient Honiara', funded by the UNFCCC Adaptation Fund and administered by UN-Habitat. Mittul completed her PhD research in 2018, investigating the long-term impacts of post-disaster housing reconstruction projects in terms of building community resilience. She entered academia after 10 years of practice in architecture industry in Australia, Switzerland and India. She is co-founder of a Melbourne-based design + build studio Giant Grass (GG) and coordinator of RMIT's Urban Futures Early Career Researchers' Network. Today's You've Been Warmed episode features Vinay Gupta - Founder & CEO of Mattereum - a blockchain startup that creates digital identities for the world's physical goods. Vinay is also really well known for his humanitarian efforts - he created the 'hexayurt' structure which is a great option for providing refugees with shelter and scaling humanitarian response, he has worked extensively with the Rocky Mountain Institute and was also the release coordinator for the Ethereum project - the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap in the world, after Bitcoin.I have to say Vinay is one of the most intelligent and well-spoken people you could probably meet and I have been following him closely since my early days in the crypto space. In this episode, we addressed the main issue that Mattereum aims to address - making consumption more efficient. For those who are not aware of the specifics of blockchain, Vinay made a great summary that explains the value of the technology and why it's needed moving forward. We also discussed how the world could manage carbon emissions with blockchain technology and the current vs future emissions of blockchains. Finally, we dove into Mattereum - how they aim to create a digital identity for the world's physical goods, what this means in practical terms, what new use-cases and consumption efficiencies this will generate and how it will ultimately lead to a world with much less waste.Vinay is a visionary and has both an interesting past & a encouraging vision for the future.
