What if everything you've learned about pranayama tells only half the story? In this episode, Jason Crandell breaks down the two radically different approaches to pranayama found in traditional Hatha Yoga and Patanjali's Raja Yoga. These lineages share a goal—liberation through practice—but their breathwork techniques, underlying philosophies, and mechanisms of transformation couldn't be more different.Whether you're a yoga teacher, a teacher-in-training, or a student curious about the deeper roots of breathwork, this talk will help you understand: • Why pranayama in the Hatha Yoga tradition focuses on energy, purification, and awakening Kundalini • Why Patanjali's approach to pranayama emphasizes stillness, subtlety, and inner quiet • How each tradition views the purpose of pranayama in relation to the mind, body, and spirit • What these differences mean for your breathwork practice and teaching todayThis lecture is excerpted from Jason's online Pranayama Teacher Training, a comprehensive course that combines modern science and traditional wisdom to help yoga teachers build confidence in teaching breathwork.

Going Pro Yoga (Formerly the Yoga Teacher Evolution Podcast)
In this week's episode of Going Pro, Paul Teodo returns to discuss yin yoga with Michael! Together they break down the history of yin yoga, styles of the physical practice, and the depths of the nervous system that can be reached through the practice. Yin yoga is a wonderful practice that provides students with ways of living more beautiful, vivid, and balanced lives. Paul discusses what yin yoga is and the way in which he personally teaches yin in Bali. He mentions explaining to his students that they will be holding shapes while breathing deeply through the nose, relaxing the body, holding reasonably still and surrendering the body to gravity and surrendering the mind to the five senses. By doing so, students are able to create a relaxation response both physically, emotionally and energetically. They also discuss how yin is a practice that allows you to get in touch with your parasympathetic nervous system. Michael breaks down the nervous system – both our sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. He describes the nervous system as a way that the deeper intelligence of the body learns how to be more efficient with its energy. With yin yoga specifically, we are working with the parasympathetic or “rest and digest” mode, which allows us to really rest and slow ourselves down. Michael elaborates on how it creates space for being and tapping into deeper layers of the emotional and energetic body. Beyond the physicality of the practice, Paul discusses the feminine qualities associated with yin, including: Vulnerability, empathy, creativity, beauty of life, connection to nature, intuition and expression. Michael and Paul reiterate the importance of keeping the body safe in these yin positions and how teachers can cue and structure yin classes to support all types of bodies. 00:00 Introduction 02:45 Where Did Yin Originate? 04:51 What Is the Practice of Yin? 06:45 Other Styles of Yin That Exist 09:30 Getting in touch with Feminine Qualities of Yin 11:55 Michael breaks down the nervous system 16:34 Softening the Body 18:18 Feminine Qualities of Bali 20:14 Jason Crandell on Yin Yoga 22:55 Safety and Accessibility in Yin Yoga 27:26 Bhramari Humming and other yin techniques 30:34 Silence as a Teacher 35:18 Michael's Take on Holding Poses About Going Pro Yoga: At Going Pro Yoga, we help yoga teachers become even better by teaching them new skills and giving them the tools they need to make their yoga classes safe, fun, and special for everyone. **Right now you can try Going Pro Yoga FREE for 7-days and sample: All Tools Needed to Master Cueing, Sequencing, and Alignment Video Library of over 75 fully Sequenced Classes, Sequence Chunks, and Flows FIRST EVER Yoga Cueing System with Over 160 poses and Hundreds of Variations Wisdom Talks from over 20,000 Hours of Teaching Experience Anatomy and Injury Prevention as it relates to Yoga. iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon In the fall of 2000, while working for Akamai Technologies in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Derek was introduced to the practice of yoga by a few of his sales colleagues who were heading out to a Bikram studio near Boston University. “Eat a light lunch” was the only thing he knew about what awaited him that afternoon, and while that first experience didn't change him overnight, it became a door into a practice that has challenged and changed his perception of what the mind and the body can do and the impact yoga can make on lives. Derek is an experienced sales, marketing, and business development executive with over two decades working with world-leading brands in the media, technology, advertising and cannabis industries. First introduced to Bikram yoga while working for Akamai Technologies in the early 2000s, Derek Vanderwarker was initially impressed by the physical experience of the ninety-minute, one hundred-degree studio practice: the heat and sweat made for a quick fix after a long weekend of unhealthy choices and helped keep the pounds off. But it wasn't until sixteen years later when he returned to yoga to untangle the leg, hip, and back injuries that had dogged him for nearly five years, that his practice began to have purpose. In 2021 he launched Guys Talking Yoga, a podcast designed to inspire men to consider the practice of yoga as a door into a better way of living by sharing the stories of other men and the benefits they have experienced along the way. Derek is a 500-hour certified yoga instructor who did his 200-hour training with Alison West and 300-hour training with Jason Crandell. He is the creator and host of the Guys Talking Yoga podcast. Welcome to Episode #54 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Vera, a yoga teacher from Brunei, was so fun as we took a really honed in on what Universal Yoga really is. I hope that this conversation made you curious about how Universal Yoga can come from within, while still honoring the anatomical and scientific approach of the body. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about Universal Yoga, and the difference between being a yoga teacher and a yoga practitioner, then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Chek Lee Kong (Vera) Chek Lee Kong is a yoga teacher and studio owner in Brunei. She is the owner of Truharmony Yoga Studio in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. She teaches Hatha yoga (200hrs Certified Vikasa Yoga), Vinyasa Yoga- Fit Flow Fly (300hrs Bryce Yoga), and Universal Yoga (200hrs Certified). When the perfect opportunity arose, she renovated a space which is now Truharmony, located at Gadong Central in Brunei. Vera has also studied with dozens of yoga teachers around the world and completed so many workshops with Kino McGregor, Dylan Werner, Jason Crandell, Annie Carpenter, Sri Dharma Mittra, Tiffany Chruikshank, and more! What to expect in the Yoga In Brunei episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast What really peaked my interest was her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Universal Yoga. Universal Yoga is something I've never heard of before, and I was grateful that Vera took time to unravel how she first came to know about Universal Yoga and what Universal yoga is. Created and taught by Andrey Lappa. Universal Yoga has set sequences based on a highly scientific and anatomical approach.Yet, she says that Universal Yoga comes from within. The principle of Universal yoga is to always be awake and and to be conscious. It turns out that the founder of Universal Yoga is actually an engineer as well, so his attention to detail, anatomy, degrees of motion and movement is truly incredible. We talked also about how Vera— very recently— burned her legs very badly and has had to recover from this injury and return to her yoga practice and to teaching. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Brunei episode? What is Universal Yoga? Yoga that comes from within, not without What an engineer can bring to yoga as a teacher Being a yoga teacher is different from a yoga practitioner Recovering from badly burned legs and coming back to yoga Connect with Vera https://www.instagram.com/verayoga/ https://www.instagram.com/truharmony_yogastudio/ Want more? Jason has traveled the world educating teachers and practitioners of yoga and has become known by many as a “teacher's teacher.” This episode discusses Jason's education and philosophy on the vast and various definitions of yoga, including one of his favorites, Mary Paffard's “pirate yoga.” Jason also shares how yoga is a sensory experience of the musculoskeletal system rooted in consciousness and psyche and how his practice serves as a grounding force for the various components of the mind, or, as Jason calls it, a “titration of the psyche.” Take class with Jason by choosing from a few of our favorites below! Actions speak louder than words, and Adam Husler (E-500RYT) uses both to understand universal balance in the practice of yoga. Adam draws experience from a variety of lives lived off the mat, from law school, the boxing ring, the ultramarathon path and the non-profit sector. He brings a unique perspective to those who seek more from yoga than making pretty shapes. He offers creative, effective and clearly-sequenced teachings that focus on balancing flexibility and strength; physically and mentally. Inspired by a fascination with anatomy, Adam specialises in Alignment-Based Vinyasa Yoga, informed by years of study and with Jason Crandell, and assisting him on a number of advanced teacher trainings. Being further influenced by; the spiritual wisdom of renowned meditation teacher Michael Stone, the dynamic teachings of Cameron Shayne and the anatomical knowledge of Tom Myers, Adam consistently refines his teaching method both as instructor and student. Adam specialises in a signature style of Alignment-Based Vinyasa— fuelled by a fascination with anatomy and a desire to ask ‘why?’. Classes are less focused on dramatic postures as an end in themselves, but on becoming more engaged, attentive, integrated and focused in asanas, as we explore our breath, mind and body at our individual threshold. Each month, Adam’s public classes have a different theme and each week a difference sequence, all featuring; long holds, controlled yet dynamic movements, intelligent alignment, anatomical precision, non-absolutism and a focus on integrity, over depth, in postures. They’re also dogma free! Adam seeks to remind all that an asana practice is a very subjective experience, and whether you are a yoga teacher or new to the practice, there’ll be plenty of options to challenge all in their journey of self enquiry. Early Roots Raised in Birmingham, Adam found his way north to the chilly hills of Durham to continue a path to a lucrative legal career. However, legal books soon got put aside and Adam began to work with underprivileged teens, young offenders institutions; occasionally in other countries too, like Nepal and Hounduras. Managing 2 brand new youth-hubs and event spaces in Central London. Including theatre, recording studios, commercial catering business, event space, gym, dance studios and more. Specialising in Youth Leadership and Life Coaching for 13-25 year olds with Changemakers. Clients including Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital Agreed to run 5 marathons and an 100km ultramarathon in 3 months. Has a black belt in Shotokan karate. Physically ‘peaked’ as a 110kg weight lifting boxer with mutton chops. Doesn’t often read books twice, unless they’re by Albert Camus. Was briefly the face of Samsung Portugal. If you are a newer teacher sequencing might feel overwhelming at times and having some structure can be very grounding and helpful. If you are not a teacher, this episode is still for you, don’t go anywhere. Having some knowledge, some behind the curtain information about sequencing might help you identify or choose the right teacher for you and it might help you create a container for your own self-practice, give you direction and encourage you to step on the mat more regularly. For this episode, I sat down with Jason Crandell. Jason is a natural teacher and author with more than 20 years of experience. Named “one of the teachers shaping the future of yoga,” by Yoga Journal, Jason has been an in-demand teacher at conferences around the world for more than a decade. Considered a teacher’s teacher, Jason has taught on countless teacher-training faculties, leads trainings globally, and regularly presents teacher-training content at esteemed conferences, so he’s the perfect guest to talk about sequencing.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Teachers should not focus on creativity first in their sequencing. Creativity is important but there are skills to be learned first. A sequence should be an expression of what you want to teach on that day. Once you have identified what you are trying to teach and how you will get there, then you can sprinkle creativity in.2- All details matter but not all details matter equally. If you want to offer a whole-body movement and feel-good practice, you can't teach too many techniques at the same time. You can be detailed as much as you want but not about everything you are teaching. Be specific with your details, but create repetition in the details you choose, so students can learn.3- Sequencing is not about rules. It's about creating a container, a structure you can color in. 4- Here's his architectural sequencing method:- Choose a few (3) focal points (region of the body, postural techniques, theme, peak pose...)- Preparation (teach your detail, specific things in link with your focal point)- Sun Salutations and variation (establish timing, rhythm, cadence, pacing)- Sun Salutation and Standing Posture (rhythm and focal points, options for different bodies, ability, and intensity desire)- Sun Salutation and Arm Balance/Inversion- Backbends- Forebends, Twists- Closing (Savasana)5- The psychological and psycho-emotional aspects of yoga are implicits to the process. They come from the embodied experience of the practice, not the intellectual or rational explanation of the concepts. The essence of yoga is a sensory experience of the asana. If you believe in the teaching of the yoga tradition, there's no difference between what is physical or philosophical. A class is not more spiritual or less spiritual, the spirituality is just more or less spelled out for you.QUESTION HE ANSWERED:Your main teachers are Rodney Yee, Richard Rosen, and Ramanan Patel, what’s one thing you’ve learned from each that is now part of your teachings today?Your style of vinyasa is slightly different from other vinyasa teachers, why do you emphasize alignment and technique in your vinyasa? Why is it important for you?Why do you think teachers should follow a sequencing method and commit to it?Do you think sequencing can help personal practice? Can we go over the steps of your sequencing method? Why do you choose the physical as a focal point and less the philosophy? It was amazing to speak to the lovely Sophie Dear (all the way from Bali!) about the healing power of yoga and how it can help us build balance in our lives. Before beginning her yoga journey, Sophie worked in TV as an assistant director, which, despite being an adventurous and exciting career, did not provide balance and instead led to challenges such as anxiety, stress and insomnia. It was this lack of balance that influenced Sophie to reconsider her path, and re-align with what allowed her to feel fulfilled. This is where Sophie discovered and fell in love with the empowering practice of yoga and the associated holistic benefits found when we connect to our breath, still the mind and move the body. We address Sophie's transition from student to teacher, in which she completed her RYT in Sydney and endured an experience of deep self exploration and growth, before exploring how lockdown affected Sophie personally and professionally in terms of her adaption to living in Bali and the birth of her subscription channel. Throughout the episode we also investigate the incredible potential of meditation as a preventative medicine, having compassion for ourselves and others, living in the present, and working to become an observer of our thoughts. Sophie has so many exciting future plans laid out ahead, and I have linked below where you can find her to look further! I could not agree more with Sophie that yoga is a tool for leading a better life, and that it is joy to be able to teach a practice which improves the lives of those around us. As yoga practitioners we all know that the body is amazingly complex -- and there is so much to learn when it comes to getting the body into those shapes we call yoga poses. But even though yoga postures are complicated, yoga sequencing doesn't have to be. On this episode, Jason explains his simple yet thorough approach to sequencing for twists and backbends.Show notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode209 Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/yogaland. Quietmind Yoga: Full Length Yoga Classes with Jeremy Devens - Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin and Gentle
FREE Zoom Workshop: 6 Steps To Turn Your Idea Into An Online Business In The Next 90 Days is happening this week! Register for free at http://www.quietmind.yoga/6steps Today's practice is a gentle yoga class suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners. This was recorded many months ago after I completed a weekend training with Jason Crandell from San Francisco. That training validated a lot of my recent discoveries in my own practice, and added some insights from Jason's work with sports medicine doctors. I also share my own experience of coming to similar conclusions when my teachers pointed out that my biggest weakness was my tight hamstrings, and I had the common Yoga misconception that I needed to spend more time stretching my hamstrings. What I eventually learned was I actually needed to be strengthening my hamstrings as that would allow them to become more flexible. I sure how to apply this to your practice in today's episode. Live Zoom classes every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at http://www.quietmind.yoga/classes Keep in touch + get special exclusive offers, discounts and giveaways by downloading any of my free guides at http://www.quietmind.yoga Recommended (not required) props: 2 Blocks, 1 Blanket Thanks for listening! You are not your thoughts. Be sceptical/skeptical of anyone who is too certain. Who is a fundamentalist. Who is dogmatic and unwilling to question anything, especially their own ideas. ⠀ Your ideas don't define you. No one defines you. We are ever changing, ever evolving observers. ⠀ Follow the teachings not the teacher. ⠀ These are my main takeaways from this conversation with https://www.instagram.com/adam_hocke/ (@adam_hocke). Adam teaches precise, strong, and practical yoga classes to students in London, blending contemporary understandings of movement and mindfulness with the traditions of yoga. He holds a BFA and MA from New York University, where he was awarded the Newington Cropsey Fellowship for emerging artists and scholars. He is also a lovely chap! Enjoy. Support this podcast

Marcus came to yoga for the physical fix but soon found the magic went deeper. With a degree in philosophy he spent his 20s mostly exploring the good life as one half of the Loose Cannons DJs, remixing, recording and touring the world, living the high/low-life. Off-stage, he first came to the mat through martial arts- combining the self-discipline and control of ninjutsu with the freedom and flow of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The yoga came as a way to recover from lingering injuries picked up along the way. But the need to properly heal the body coincided with a sneaking desire for change in the mind. Maxing-out every studio intro-offer in London, and trying any style of yoga available, he finally landed on dynamic vinyasa and more specifically, the Ashtanga-inspired Rocket system, which satisfied his undying urge to fly. Going on to teacher trainings with The Yoga People, David Swenson, David Kyle, and Jason Crandell, he also studied in Yin Yoga too, complementing the daily yang of London city-life with a deepening appreciation of meditation, stillness of mind and yoga beyond the asanas that originally drew him in. In 2015 he co-founded the Dead Yogis Society, a karma yoga movement to wipe the gloss off the lips of #instayoga and return to the breath, sweat and rawness of the practice. He has also co-written two books with Hannah Whittingham: on yogic philosophy, “Greed, Sex, Intention- Living like a yogi in the 21st Century” and postures in the age of social media, “How To Win at Yoga.” As well as running their own teacher trainings through The Good Life Yoga School in London. Jason shares about his past experience of yoga in the 80s and how it's growing. This week's episode is the last episode of 2018! As usual, I'm reflecting on the last 12 months and everything that I've accomplished throughout the year. I start this episode by sharing where I spent this year. My year was split between 5 months in Mexico, 5 months at home, and 2 months in the United States. By the time this episode airs, I'll be on a plane to Mexico to finish off the year exactly where I started it, in Mexico City. This year I've felt a lot of accomplishment. I spent the first half of 2018 doing a lot of personal development and working on my money story to allow money to flow into my life and my business. The second half of the year, I worked my tail off to save for my 300 hour YTT that I'll be doing in early 2019. I said "yes" to every project that came my way, and because of that I am looking to find more ease in 2019. My intention moving forward is to work smarter, not harder. My other successes for 2018 include releasing 50 new episodes of the podcast, talking to amazing guests from around the world including Jason Crandell, Diane Bruni and Amber Sears. I doubled my podcast downloads, released my signature course, Yoga Business Bootcamp, and grew my private Facebook community, Yoga Business Badasses a ton. I am so grateful for this community, and I couldn't have done any of that without you guys, so thank you for listening and supporting me! Finally, I talk about some of my failures and room for improvement in 2019, where the first half of the year is taking me, and more. Enjoy! When I first started taking yoga classes from Jason many years ago, I was struck by his voice. He has a voice that draws you in. It's soothing and encouraging. He speaks in a measured, comfortable pace. And he's a clear, succinct communicator. In essence, he's a natural when it comes to verbal communication. This week, I ask Jason to share how he's developed this skill set. And, although this episode is specifically geared toward yoga teachers, the ideas we here apply to everyone. We all have times when clear verbal communication is vital -- in client meetings, with our loved ones, during presentations -- and some of us struggle with it more than others. My hope is that you'll gain confidence and clarity from this episode. We talk about:* Why verbal communication might be the most important skill for yoga teachers* Using each class you teach as a practice for personal growth in the area of verbal communication* The struggles we (Jason and Andrea) have when it comes to speaking in front of a group* How choosing one or two takeaways for your students can dramatically improve your teachingShow notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcasts/episode100SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORS1. One of my favorite quotes from Jason is,"I believe that we should embrace anything and everything that helps us and our students be well." On this episode, we dive into the meaning behind that quote and why it's important to advocate for our students to try other modalities if needed. There are times when yoga teachers feel pressured to know all of the answers or to make a diagnosis and there are also times when we unintentionally make our students feel guilty if they're not finding healing in the yoga room. Jason dispels these ideas and helps teachers cope with not having all the answers. Shownotes: yogalandpodcast.com/episode70/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We all struggle from time to time with the question -- "Am I doing enough?" This week, Jason and I talk about this question and this fear in the yoga room. His clear message: Trust in the process of yoga. And return to the fundamentals of what we're trying to teach (and learn) in yoga: To hone attention and discipline so that we can remain steady in the face of stress. Jason is back and he's sharing just a few of the values he hopes to pass onto his teacher training graduates. We talk about -- how do you develop a strong, personal point of view without minimizing others' points of view? And is yoga a discipline that changes over time -- are we allowed to revise? On this episode Jason answers listener Kat's question, "How do I make sure I'm not leaving anyone out as I teach my mixed level classes?" The solutions include acknowledging that the reality for modern yogis is that we all learn together regardless of our level, using humor to diffuse tension in the class, and encouraging students to engage in the learning process even if they can't do the final shape of the pose. Before jetting off on his most recent trip to Hong Kong, I sat with Jason to answer more listener-submitted questions. This time we just happened to get questions that all centered around the lower body. So, we talk about: * How to best work with tight hamstrings? * How to best recover when your hamstring has been overstretched? * How to find stability and strengthen the low back, quadratus lomborum (QL), and sacrum after pregnancy? * What's up with hearing about yogis having hip replacements? How can you keep your hips safe in yoga? Shownotes: yogalandpodcast.com/episode27/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jason Crandell has always been on J’s radar as someone of his generation who managed to break through into the mainstream. They talk about early days of Yoga Journal cruises, what it takes to launch a yoga career, the invent of yoga teacher training, social media literacy, realities and issues facing current yoga business models, raising the educational bar and holding teacher trainers accountable. They also discuss drug and alcohol addiction in loved ones, sequencing yoga programs, and the ins and outs of online video. This episode is part of our premium podcast subscription. On this episode Jason answers three of our listener questions and it just so happens that they all focus on some aspect of shoulder anatomy. We also talk about cats a lot. Here are the questions: * Why do we flex the ankle in poses like Reclined Pigeon? * Is "pull the shoulder blades down" a "bad" alignment cue? * In Plank Pose, do you push strongly through the arms and upper back? Or soften the shoulders? We've gotten many questions recently about teacher training that we decided to do an episode that answers common questions. Doing a yoga teacher training is a huge investment -- both financially and in terms of your time. It can be a wonderfully transformative experience, but it's worth doing your research and thinking about what is going to best meet your needs. Jason and I talk about: * Whether you should stick with a local teacher or travel to do a training with a well-known teacher (his answer might surprise you). * Considerations in terms of format -- monthlong intensive? two week modules? six months of weekends? * How vital it is to continue your education even after completing a foundational 200-hour training * Are there different things to consider if you just want to deepen your practice vs. wanting to teach? * Plus, we talk about what types of information and skills an advanced 300-hour training can provide.
