Going Beyond the Food: Intuitive Eating, Emotional Eating, Body Neutrality, Diet Mindset and Anti-Diet Podcast

This episode discusses the nuances between body positivity and body satisfaction, highlighting the issue of conflating body image with true satisfaction and well-being. The conversation, led by Stephanie Dodier, a non-diet nutritionist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and cognitive behavioral coach, along with guest Brie Campos, a licensed mental health counselor, delves into the origins of the body positivity movement and its transformation over time. They critique the diet culture's co-opting of body positivity, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of body image and its impact on individuals' mental health and self-esteem. The discussion unpacks the misguided equating of health with thinness and challenges societal norms around body image, advocating for a shift from external motivations to intrinsic self-esteem and personal well-being. They propose self-esteem work detached from physical appearance as a solution to the limitations of the body positivity movement, focusing on empowerment, autonomy, and a broader perspective of health that encompasses mental, emotional, and psychological dimensions. What you'll learn listening to this episode: The true definition and origins of body positivity, and how it has been misinterpreted Why body positivity alone is not an effective solution for healing our relationship with our bodies The importance of rebuilding self-esteem and redefining our worth beyond physical appearance The difference between "having to" and "wanting to" when it comes to self-care and wellness The understanding that body image work is a lifelong journey, requiring ongoing self-exploration and growth Mentioned in the show: Free Resources and Training Connect with our Guest: Website - Bri Campos Instagram - Bri Campos

In this episode, we have a pretty cool chat with Stephanie Dodier, reformed dieter and coach for women post diet-culture. We dive deep into how society kinda messes with our heads, telling us we need to look a certain way to feel good about ourselves. Dodier brings up something called "the safety of conformity," which is basically about how we mix up feeling safe with actually being confident. Stephanie shares some personal stories -- for example, about being taken to a Weight Watchers meeting when she was just 12. It was a tough moment that stuck with her, making her feel like her body was somehow "wrong." This story set the stage for a lot of what she talked about, like how we chase after this image society wants for us, thinking it'll make us happy or confident, but it's really about feeling safe from judgment. The chat also ventures into how all of this safety stuff isn't just about weight. It ties into aging, health, and money. (Did you ever stop to think about how being worried about money is kind of similar to worrying about weight?) It's all about trying to fit into what we think we're supposed to be. Towards the end, we disuss how facing doubts and insecurities is actually a part of being confident. The real journey is about exploring all of the parts of our lives where we might not feel secure -- and figuring out how to work with them. Non Scale Victories refer to those gains or benefits we experience from exercise routine besides weight loss.  Things like having more energy, being able to lift and move things without help, feeling less winded during everyday activities, and sleeping better at night. While these are all good things, they are often viewed as “secondary wins”, things we usually only celebrate if we're not seeing changes in our body's shape or size.In this episode we'll explore why that is problematic and contributes to lack of motivation and consistency.Mentioned in the show:The What Moves Me FUNctional Movement Membership is now open for enrollment.  This is my new offering, where we put the FUN in Functional Movement so that you can feel better in your body without all the “no pain no gain”The “What Moves Me”  - FUN-ctional Movement Membership is all about helping you create the motivation you need to consistently move your body in ways that feel good, so that you can get off the “start-stop cycle” for good and experience all the benefits of a regular movement routine.  Podcast listeners save 10% off the monthly subscription by using the code PODCAST at checkout.About the HostKim Hagle (she/her)  is Certified Personal Trainer, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Body Image Coach and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness. Through mindset and movement coaching she helps women heal their relationship with food and exercise while disconnecting their worth from their weight, so they can feel healthy, happy and confident in the body they have.  Can't get motivated to move?  Download “The Motivation Secret” - Kim's FREE guide that will help you understand why you feel stuck.  Inside you'll learn the three secrets to cultivating motivation that lasts and the one mistake we ALL make that is a motivation killer! Ready to take the next step?  Visit our website to learn more about our coaching programs For health professionals looking to adopt the non-diet approach in your business, visit Kim's mentor, Stephanie Dodier's site for free resources to get started.  Let's stay in touch! Kim is on Instagram and Facebook @radiantvitalitywellness.  Disclaimer.  The information contained in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice.  Always consult a health care professional about your unique needs. Tune in as we kick off a series I like to call “Fitness Motivation Sayings that are Anything But”.  This week we're exploring “embrace the suck”.Like most of the fitspo mantras, embrace the suck is something that's said in an attempt to motivate us to get the work done.  But is it really motivating?  I don't think so.Saying something like this to yourself, might result in you completing the workout… but it only reinforces the belief that exercise DOES suck, and that it HAS to suck in order to be effective… and the only way to experience any benefits from exercise is to use willpower and just do it.Our thoughts are very powerful, but believing such negative things about exercise will never create the positive feeling of intrinsic motivation.  Nobody sticks to something long term that they think sucks.Listen to learn how you can begin to reframe those negative thoughts to something truly inspiring.Mentioned in the show:The What Moves Me FUNctional Movement Membership is now open for enrollment. Founding Members Special in effect until Sept. 30, 2022 - Save 50% off the monthly membership fee, for the length of time you're in the community. About the HostKim Hagle (she/her)  is Certified Personal Trainer, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Body Image Coach and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness. For some, joyful movement can feel out of reach.  Our history with sports, fitness, gyms and dieting can greatly influence our relationship with movement and our motivation to exercise.I'll often hear from people “I don't even know where to start.  I can't think of one type of movement I'd enjoy”.  Often at the root of this concern is a belief that the purpose of movement is to lose or control our weight. That was the experience of our guest on today's show.  Kathy never identified as an “athletic type” and therefore didn't feel comfortable in a gym, doing traditional fitness type activities.  She assumed that there was no movement she'd enjoy because she associated movement with “working out” and assumed that anything else was not good enough.Tune in to hear how Kathy got to the root of her struggles with movement and how it wasn't really about the exercise itself.  What you'll learn by listening:How fitness culture's focus on aesthetics is negatively affecting your motivation to moveWhat's really at the root of your motivation strugglesWhy trying a new program isn't the answerHow to feel better in and about your body without forcing yourself to do exercise you hateMentioned in the show:  Right Body for Me - 6 month transformative coaching programThe Motivation Secret - FREE guide to help you get unstuck with movement.---About the Host---Kim Hagle (she/her)  is Certified Personal Trainer, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Body Image Coach and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness. Setting and achieving goals can be a great way to challenge ourselves and celebrate the strength and power we often didn't know was inside us.  Mastering a new skill or participating in an event can be exciting, empowering and 100% joyful. But, for some - that feeling of success and accomplishment might be a brand new emotion.  If you've always believed that your body was weak, incapable or wrong - then it's only natural that you'd want to hold on to and recreate those positive emotions whenever possible.  And that's where we run the risk of crossing over from joyfully challenging ourselves into chasing bigger and bigger goals and needing to prove ourselves. Our guest on the show today bravely shares her experience with this.  After a serious injury that left her bedridden, the goal of learning to run motivated Robyn to work through her rehab.  What started out as a celebration of her body's strength became a comparison trap fueled with chasing metrics in an effort to “improve” that left her feeling worse physically and mentally.Tune in to learn how Robyn reframed her mindset about running to reclaim it as joyful movement and how changing her thoughts about running improved other areas of her life as well.Mentioned in the show:Right Body for Me - my 6 month coaching container for women  who want to end the cycle of restriction and punitive exercise and find food freedom, joyful movement and confidence in their own skin. On today's episode, we are joined by Jennifer, a participant in the Right Body for Me coaching program.Like many women, Jennifer spent her life cycling from one diet to another, never finishing or finding “success” with any of them.  But, she continued to believe that losing weight was the answer to all her struggles and always hoped that the next one would “work” and she'd feel better.Eventually she realized that dieting wasn't working and she started dabbling in the non-diet approach, however it didn't seem to matter how much she learned or what programs she tried, she never found that freedom she thought she would gain by ditching diets. In our interview, you'll hear how one to one coaching was the thing that made the difference for Jennifer.  By having someone ask the tough questions, encourage her to dig down to the core issue and hold space for her - she finally felt safe to do the work to transform her limiting beliefs about health, weight and herself.Jennifer shares how “doing the work” has given her the freedom she's always wanted and opened up more possibilities than she even imagined.Mentioned in the show:Right Body for Me - my 6 month coaching program is now open for enrollment.  Using tools from CBT, you'll explore your relationship with food, exercise, body image and health so you can leave dieting, punitive exercise and body shame behind for good!  Learn more on my website at www.radiantvitality.ca/rightbodyforme ---About the Host---Kim Hagle (she/her)  is Certified Personal Trainer, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Body Image Coach and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness. One of the most common questions I get from clients is “what's the best way to eat to fuel my body so I can feel and function my best…without dieting”.The average woman tries 60+ diets by the age of 45, each one a little different from the next, and each one claiming that theirs is the “healthiest” or “right” way to eat.  So it is no wonder we feel completely confused and overwhelmed about how to feed ourselves.Nutrition and eating DOES seem complicated.  The diet and fitness industries have made it so, so that you NEED to rely on them, rather than trust yourself and your body, to tell you how to eat.But it doesn't have to be this way.  You don't have to have a degree in nutritional science or perform complicated math formulas to eat in a healthful way and fuel yourself well.Eating can be easy and simple and can support your health while also honouring your satisfaction and tastes.  Gentle nutrition means feeding yourself in a way that supports your health, and helps you feel and function your best, while also honouring your satisfaction.  It's honouring the sensual experience of eating while honouring how the food makes you feel.  It's having a healthy balance of foods, while having a healthy relationship with food.---What you'll learn by listening:Why following an eating plan SEEMS easier, but always ends in reverting to old habitsThe missing piece from all eating plans that is responsible for your cravings and “off plan indulgences” - spoiler alert: it's not your lack of willpowerHow a gentler approach to nutrition can make eating easy, sustainable and fun and keep you off the cycle of “on plan/off plan” for goodTips to incorporate gentle nutrition into your life without changing your entire eating habits.---Mentioned in the show: “Intuitive Eating” By Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch---About the Host---Kim Hagle is a certified Personal Trainer, Body Image Coach, mom of four and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness. This week's guest, Stephanie Dodier, is an expert in many things, but in our episode today we are going to explore the origins of diet culture and the somewhat sinister beginnings of the modern weight loss industry. The conversation about your weight which may feel like a scientific dictum inside of a doctor's visit actually has very little to do with health and a heck of a lot more to do with social oppression. ---- Stephanie Dodier is a Clinical Nutritionist CNP, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, host of two top-ranking podcasts in the non-diet industry and creator of the Going Beyond The Food Method™️. Our guest today is Stephanie Dodier, a leading expert in the relatively new and quickly growing anti-diet space.  For any coach who has been in the health, fitness, nutrition, wellness, or weight loss industry for any length of time, we invite you to open up and explore the idea that not dieting might be the way forward for some clients who have been dieting their entire lives without any appreciable results, improved health outcomes, or life joy to show for it. For some clients, stopping dieting and learning to accept and appreciate the body as it is should be the goal. During this episode we talked about the realization that led Stephanie to close her dietetics practice and advocate for a non-diet approach to health, what it means to interact with health in a non-diet way,  how our bodies are ultimately a vehicle for experiencing life, and so much more. Stephanie is exceedingly wise and patient in teaching and explaining this concept to us.   She has a world of information for curious coaches to explore and we just start to scratch the surface in this interview.  Check it out below.
