She is the founder of Rowan + Sage, where she shares handcrafted astrologically-aligned herbal products, works with clients in her clinical practice, and guides others on their plant path through educational programs and mentorship. Sarah and I had a great conversation where we defined animism, the worldview of seeing everything in the world around us as living and spirited, working with the spirits of the planets and plants, and seeing plants as emissaries of the planets themselves. In this episode, I'm sharing all about how you to bring the abstract, intellectual concepts of astrology down to earth, using real-world tools like plants, crystals, and tarot cards. Every sign in the zodiac is associated with an element, (fire, earth, air, or water), and an archetype or a character that embodies its energy. Plants, crystals, tarot cards, and even goddesses are also associated with elements and archetypes in this way, connecting them to the signs and planets in astrology. You can bring a particular tool, or "ally", into your life and spiritual practice in order to channel and harness the energy signature of a particular sign or planet or even to balance one out. In this episode, I'm sharing all about how to understand one of the most complicated and confusing aspects of astrology: the transits. Transits is a very broad, catch-all term for pretty much anything the sun, moon, planets, and asteroids do - change signs, go retrograde, form aspects to one another, and more. I'm sharing my controversial opinions about which transits are important to pay attention to and which really don't matter that much, both collectively and based on your own chart. Plus, I'm also giving you the inside track on how to know which transits are most likely to be really impactful for you personally. Want to learn even more about astrology with me? In this episode, we are talking all about the meaning of Imbolc, the Irish festival of the goddess Brighid and the harbinger of spring! This is perhaps one of the most overlooked festivals in the Wheel of the Year, but I love its quiet subtlety. Imbolc is associated with the agricultural instances of the first lambs and ewe's milk in the late winter and very early spring, which can be difficult to relate to in our modern, 21st century lives. But this halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox actually calls us to do the last deep inner work of the winter before we move fully into action and intention-setting in the spring, so it serves an important spiritual purpose. In the northern hemisphere, Imbolc always occurs during Aquarius season. It also occurs within a few weeks of the new moon in Aquarius and full moon in Leo, activating this axis of individuality and the collective. At the opposite end of the year, Lammas occurs during Leo season. In the southern hemisphere, these are reversed, but Imbolc and Lammas always activate this Leo-Aquarius axis. In this episode, we are talking all about the meaning of the winter solstice, also known as Yule! This is the Norse and Germanic pagan precursor to our modern Christmas. The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year, when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. This is the darkest part of the year, a time considered sacred by cultures all over the world from Europe to South America to Africa. Many secular Christmas traditions are actually pagan in origin, such as decorating trees and evergreen garlands, drying orange slices, cooking with spices, hanging up lights and singing songs. All of these festivities have a common theme of bringing light to the darkness - metaphorically or literally. In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice always occurs when the sun reaches 0 degrees of Capricorn. It also occurs within a few weeks of the new moon in Capricorn and full moon in Cancer, activating this axis of structure and support. At the opposite end of the year, the summer solstice occurs at the start of Cancer season in June. In the southern hemisphere, these are reversed, but the solstices always activate this Cancer-Capricorn axis. In this episode, we are talking all about the meaning of Samhain, the ancient Celtic precursor to our modern Halloween, and a favorite festival of many witches! Samhain is the most magickal day of the year, when the veil between worlds is said to be at its thinnest. That means that the barrier between our physical, human world and the spirit realm becomes very thin - so thin that spirits and the dead can pass into our world to walk among us. That includes deceased loved ones and mischievous or evil spirits alike, so it is common both to honor our ancestors with altars and to do protection spells at this time of year. Many of your favorite Halloween decorations are actually pagan Samhain symbols, including jack o'lanterns. The ancient Celts carved faces into root vegetables to protect their homes on Samhain; when colonizers came to North America, they discovered that pumpkins worked even better for this purpose. In the northern hemisphere, Samhain always takes place during Scorpio season. It also occurs within a few weeks of the new moon in Scorpio and the full moon in Taurus, activating this axis of life and death, of pleasure and darkness. At the opposite end of the year, Beltane occurs during Taurus season. In the southern hemisphere, these are reversed, but Samhain and Beltane always activate this Taurus-Scorpio axis. In 2022, this axis is even more potently activated, as the new and full moons near Samhain will also be eclipses. Persephone, the goddess of vegetation and Queen of the Underworld from Greek mythology, is also often honored at Samhain, as this is the time of year when she is said to descend into the underworld to be with her husband. It's traditional to eat six pomegranate seeds in honor of Persephone's six months in the underworld. Click here to listen to my ultimate guide to Beltane episode, where I talk more about Persephone. In this episode, we are talking all about the meaning of the autumn equinox, also known as Mabon, named for a Welsh god! The autumn equinox is one of the two days of the year when day and night are equal and balanced. In the northern hemisphere, the autumnal equinox occurs in September, when the sun enters Libra. The autumn equinox is the second harvest festival in the Wheel of the Year. It also occurs within a few weeks of the new moon in Libra and the full moon in Aries, (often the harvest moon), activating this axis of self and other, the balance of relying on and loving ourselves versus giving love to those around us. At the opposite end of the year, the spring equinox occurs during Aries season. In the southern hemisphere, these are reversed, but the equinoxes always activate this Aries-Libra axis. Listen to learn all about the history, themes and symbolism, and astrology of this festival and autumn equinox celebration ideas to try at home. In this episode, we are talking all about the meaning of Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh! Lammas actually just means loaf mass and Lughnasadh is named for the Welsh god Lugh. Lammas is the first harvest festival and occurs on August 1st each year in the northern hemisphere, marking the halfway point between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. (In the southern hemisphere, it occurs on February 1 each year.) It celebrates the grain harvest and first fruits and veggies of the year. It is also a harbinger that we are over halfway through summer and fall is on its way. It's traditionally celebrated by baking bread from wheat or corn, but there are many ways to celebrate this sacred day of abundance. Lammas occurs when the sun is in Leo each year. It also occurs within a few weeks of the new moon in Leo and the full moon in Aquarius, activating this axis of individuality within the collective and of how our creativity serves the greater good. At the opposite end of the year, the festival of Imbolc occurs during Aquarius season. In the southern hemisphere, these are reversed, but Lammas and Imbolc always activate this Leo-Aquarius axis. In this episode, we are talking all about the meaning of the summer solstice! This is the longest day of the year, also known as Litha and Midsummer, and occurs around June 20 each year in the northern hemisphere. (In the southern hemisphere, it occurs around December 20 each year.) This is the sun at the peak of its power, the day of the year with the most light hours. After this, the days start to get shorter and the nights grow longer once more, but for this sacred day, time seems to stand still. The summer solstice occurs when the sun reaches 0 degrees of Cancer. It also occurs within a few weeks of the new moon in Cancer and the full moon in Capricorn, activating this axis of rest and work, intuitive self-care and sustainable, grounded action. At the opposite end of the year, the winter solstice occurs when the sun reaches 0 degrees of Capricorn. In the southern hemisphere, these are reversed, but the solstices always activate this Cancer-Capricorn access. In this episode, I'm chatting with Sarah Chappell, a holistic business coach on a mission to help folks craft lives of self-care and service. A decade of addiction and a lifetime of anxiety and depression led Sarah to discover tarot as a tool for self-care. Embracing a spiritual practice cracked open massive shifts in her experience of the world, and underpins all of the work she offers today. Sarah has over fifteen years of sales, marketing, and communications experience and is delighted to have supported hundreds of herbalists, astrologers, artists, tarot readers, therapists, acupuncturists, witches, healers, social workers, makers, and more through her courses, coaching, mentorship, and private practice. In this episode, I'm sharing some Moon Phases 101 and seven situations where you are definitely going to want to know what's up with the moon! The moon has a profound impact on our emotions and intuition and having an awareness of what's happening energetically with the moon can be powerful information to have. There are four basic moon phases: The new moon, for setting intentions The waxing moon, for taking action The full moon, for celebrating and having gratitude The waning moon, for releasing The moon also moves through the twelve signs of the zodiac each month, each of which carries a particular energetic signature, and it activates each house of your own astrological chart every month as well! These are potent and nuanced layers of information to be aware of, especially when you're feeling moody, emotional, out of sorts, or uninspired, when you're struggling to understand those around you or getting in arguments with close loved ones, or even when you're making magickal or mundane plans and manifestations. Come share in our free Facebook group, Empowered Modern Witches, what came up for you in this episode and how you're bringing more awareness of lunar astrology and the moon phases into your day-to-day life! --- The week of the summer solstice in June 2021, I'm hosting a Moon Phases Bootcamp for members of the Starlight Coven! We will be learning all about what the moon phases and moon signs are, how to track them in your chart and life, and more. Have you ever wanted to work with a goddess or connect with a matron deity for wisdom, guidance, and support? To be honest, I never really did and never really worked with goddesses in my own practice until I discovered that the asteroid, Diana, is exactly conjunct my moon! There are hundreds, (maybe thousands), of asteroids named after goddesses that are Greek, Roman, Norse, Celtic, Germanic, Sumerian, Egyptian, Chinese, Japanese, Aztec, Inuit, and probably other cultures too! Finding goddess asteroids in your chart, especially those that are very close to your sun, moon, or personal planets, is a powerful way to discover goddesses who might be open to working with you - and in fact, who may have even been calling out to work with you since you were born. In this episode, I'm diving into how to explore the spectrum of the divine feminine in your own birth chart and in your own being, how to find goddess asteroids in your chart, and what they can mean for you. --- To find goddess asteroids in your chart, go to www.astro.com and enter your birth information. Then click on Extended Chart Selection, scroll down to the bottom, and enter the asteroid codes you want to see into the "Additional Objects" dialogue box or choose them from the alphabetical listing. Here are the asteroid codes for some popular goddesses you might want to find in your chart: 1 - Ceres 2 - Pallas 3 - Juno 4 - Vesta / 34 - Hestia 10 - Hygiea 14 - Psyche 16 - Fortuna 19 - Proserpina / 399 - Persephone 33 - Isis 76 - Freia 78 - Diana / 105 - Artemis 100 - Hekate 318 - Magdalena 580 - Selene 4227 - Kaali 5381 - Sekhmet 7088 - Ishtar --- Want professional, intuitive insight on the goddess asteroids in your chart? In today's episode, we are busting all kinds of myths about the many different ways you can supposedly practice moon rituals wrong.... the truth is, you can't make any mistakes in your own practice! Here are a few you might have heard around the internet which are NOT TRUE: 1. You can only practice your new or full moon rituals on the exact day of the phase. 2. You have to celebrate all 8 (or even 9) of the moon phases in great detail. 3. You can't let the sun touch your moonwater and charging crystals or the effects of the moonlight will be ruined. 4. You have to make moonwater and charge your crystals every full moon. 5. You have to cast a circle and call the elements or four quarters to start your moon rituals. 6. You can't practice a moon ritual or charge your crystals if it's cloudy out and you can't see the moon. Honestly, all of these are nonsense. You can practice whenever, however, and in whatever ways feel right to you! The only actual rule with the moon phases is that you need to tune into your intuition to discover what feels right, supportive, and nurturing for you personally. Just for good measure, though, here is one actual mistake I do hear people make frequently: the energy of the full moon is for celebration and amplification, not for banishing or release, (which is actually what the waning moon, the full two weeks that follows the full moon, is all about!) But even with this one, if it feels good and right to you to release at the full moon, then trust yourself. If this episode resonates and you want to learn more about the moon phases, check out the FREE masterclass, How to Work with the Moon Phases in Your Daily Life (even when you have no time!)
Happy 2021! We are diving back in with a big, juicy episode to help you explore your chart and get realigned with your truth in the new year. Here are 8 signs you're not living in alignment with your astrological chart - which is literally a map of the stars at the moment you were born and metaphorically a map to your higher self and purpose - and how to fix it: You struggle to find your joy. Solution? Look to your sun sign and house. You feel pressured to express (or repress) your emotions in a way that feels unnatural. Solution? Look to your moon sign and house. You feel like you're on an emotional rollercoaster all the time. Solution? Track the moon signs and which houses they activate in your chart each month. Changes are whirling at you and you never see them coming. Solution? Pay attention to the big transits, especially of Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Pluto and the North Node. Your life feels aimless, you can't seem to find your purpose and you're just lost. Solution? Look to your North Node sign and house. You know you're drawn to witchcraft but struggle to know what path or practices are right for you. Solution? Check out what sign is in your 8th house but also your sun sign and house - remember, find the joy. The moon phases seem "off" for you, like you're energized when you're "supposed" to be drained or vice versa. Solution? Check out your natal moon phase. You're dealing with burn out, overwhelm, and feel unnourished. Solution? Check out what sign you have in the 4th house, as well as your moon sign and house. Get your chart for free at www.witchoflupinehollow.com/create-your-birth-chart. I recommend clicking View full chart, then Settings, and select Whole Signs (oldest) from the dropdown menu! It can be tough to feel connected to nature during the cold, dark days of winter but for many witches, feeling connected to nature is an essential part of our practices. So what's a witch to do? Luckily, Sagittarius season is here to help. This mutable fire sign is all about bringing light to the darkness and honoring the wisdom of nature. Bringing nature into your home or working with herbalism are great options for connecting with nature during even the darkest days. --- Join our FREE Facebook group and share how you're connecting with nature this winter! www.facebook.com/groups/empoweredmodernwitches
Embodying your inner witch is about committing to your ideal witchy lifestyle. When your daily life is grounded in magick, you get to have mystical experiences every single day, no matter what you're doing. If you were embodying your inner witch in your real life right now, what would you be doing? How would you feel? Achieving that vision in your own reality requires you to follow your intuition and really trust yourself to know what's right for you, to prioritize your magick as much as you prioritize anything else you need to do in your life, (stop choosing laundry over witchcraft - they're both important!), and to find a supportive community that can help you hold yourself accountable. But what does it actually look like to embody your inner witch every day? Here are five ways that work for me: 1. My morning ritual - start the day off with witchcraft! I check the moon phase, sign, and which house it's activating in my chart, pull an oracle card and journal on it and write down 5 things I'm grateful for. 2. Tea - I choose a particular tea blend to drink for the day inspired by the season and the moon phase. 3. Magickal workday - light a candle or diffuse oils at your desk, use crystals to clear the energy of your office, or incorporate magick into your workday, no matter what you do for a living 4. Seasonal checklist - I like to make a list at the beginning of each season of witchy and otherwise fun things I want to do. This is inspired by my friend Alexis' seasonal "might-do lists!" 5. Accountability - check in with my people, whether that's my besties in our lowkey coven, my spiritual business mastermind, or the wonderful people in the circles and memberships I lead myself --- If you're ready to embody YOUR inner witch and commit to your ideal witchy lifestyle, then The Embodied Witch Inner Circle is for you! The Inner Circle includes:
Witchcraft and self-care both have deep roots in ancient, ancestral wisdom and modern, feminist movements. Yet, both have become associated with trendy, consumerist culture as well. Let's fight the patriarchy together and reclaim the true meaning of witchcraft and self-care by creating sacred rituals that nurture our minds, bodies, and intuition! In this episode, I'm sharing five tips from my upcoming book, The Modern Witch's Guide to Magickal Self-Care, which will be out in October 2020: 1. Get curious about what really resonates with you. 2. Check out where the moon is in your astrological chart for self-care inspiration, as well as what your sun, rising, and Ceres signs are. 3. Start and end the day with morning and evening self-care rituals. 4. Allow space for your rituals to adapt and evolve as you do. 5. Think of your rituals in categories, what I like to call the 5 Pillars of Divinity. I'll be speaking more on what the 5 Pillars of Divinity are and how you can use them to nurture your inner witch during The Empowered Modern Witches Summit from September 21-25, 2020. Click here to grab a free ticket for live access to the summit or purchase an All-Access Pass for lifetime presentation recordings and over $600 in bonus courses, workbooks, meditations, live rituals and more. Ever struggle to be consistent in your rituals, whether you want to do them daily, for the new or full moons, or even just seasonally? As we head into Virgo season this week, let's talk about how you can turn that around and create rituals that are not only fun and fulfilling but that you both WANT to do and will ACTUALLY do. We'll go over my four cardinal tips for greater consistency: 1. Know thyself – before you can create any rituals, you have to know what you want and what you need 2. Make your rituals a priority by scheduling time for them 3. Have a plan and know what it is you're going to do, what you need, how much time you need, etc 4. Have several rituals to choose from for when you don't have time and so you don't feel to constrained Are you interested in having a private mentor to help you discover your inner witch, create consistent rituals that you actually want to do every day, and go from stuck to spellbound in your spiritual practice, fill out this application so we can discuss how I can support you!
It can be difficult sometimes to connect with the eight pagan sabbats that make up the Wheel of the Year, as they are rooted in ancient Celtic agricultural festivals that don't really have a lot of bearing on our 21st century lives. But the three harvest festivals of Lammas, the Autumn Equinox, and Samhain in August, September, and October usher in most witches' favorite season: fall! These three festivals are about celebrating the abundance of the harvest - both agriculturally and metaphorically. It's a beautiful time for reflection, gathering, gratitude, shadow work, and celebration. Catch my tips for celebrating these three festivals in the 21st century, then come and share how you're celebrating them in my free Facebook group for Empowered Modern Witches! Witchcraft is a sacred journey of exploring your spirituality, transmuting your shadows into strengths, and empowering the oppressed. But it's not all serious all the time - being a witch is actually super fun too! Your practice should include things that bring you joy. Rituals should feel fun and fulfilling. Nothing should ever feel like an obligation or pointless to you. No, we don't always feel like doing our rituals and shadow work is never going to be fun - but there is a balance to be struck. For one thing, all the fun seasonal things you do like going to the beach in summer and carving pumpkins in the fall can actually be part of your spiritual practice. Things that are fun for me include the whole process of planning, planting, harvesting and working with my herbs, (makes me feel like Claire from Outlander), travel, genealogy research, and just curling up at home with a cozy meal and a glass of wine. These might not sound particularly spiritual and yet, I connect with nature by working in my garden, I use my herbs to make delicious, magickal tea blends, I've taken pilgrimages to ancestral spots which were deeply spiritual experiences, and this cottage witch finds food and wine to be downright transcendent... Not everything in your spiritual practice has to look super witchy in order to be fulfilling! But I found that I didn't always know what I found fun or what brought me joy. Luckily, my astrological chart had tons of insight for me. The sun rules joy and inspiration, as well as the sign of Leo and the 5th house. Look up where these are in your chart to get some insight into how you can have more fun as a witch, (and in the rest of your life too!) --- This month in the Starlight Coven, we're learning all about Leo season and how to find the joy in your spiritual practice. Sign up today for just $49.95 per month and you'll receive the beautiful PDF magazine for Leo season, access to our private Facebook group for live trainings and a Lammas ritual, daily text messages and more!
