Gaedel, who stood just 3 feet 7 inches tall, was signed to a one-day contract by the St. Louis Browns in 1951 thanks to the efforts of legendary baseball promoter, Bill Veeck. In his only at-bat, Gaedel came to the plate wearing a jersey with the number "1/8" on it and a miniature baseball bat. He took a strike and then walked on four straight pitches, much to the amusement of the crowd. Gaedel was immediately replaced by a pinch runner and was never allowed to play in another MLB game due to concerns about the integrity of the sport. He was born on July 28, 1934 in Utica, New York and started his professional wrestling career in the early 1960s. Known for his hard-hitting and technical style, as well as his charisma and in-ring showmanship, Woods competed in various regional promotions throughout the United State, including the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). One of the most famous incidents in Woods' career occurred in 1975, when he was involved in a plane crash with fellow wrestlers Ric Flair, Johnny Valentine, and Bob Bruggers. The crash left him with a broken back and other serious injuries, but he managed to crawl out of the wreckage and flag down help.
