Welcome, to Dark Realms: Mansfield Reformatory For todays Dark Realm, we took a listener's suggestion to look into the Mansfield Reformatory in Ohio, and we are so glad we did. There are stark obvious correlations between this institution and the previously covered Denbigh Asylum, pointedly their initial intent to not only do good, but do better than has been done in that field. Yet, to me at least, it seems eerily semi-correlative in the wests attitude towards reform and punishment, and the years following World War 2.Stay safe,Kevin.Joining our Patreon team not only gives you early Ad-Free access to all of our episodes, it can also give you access to the Patreon only podcast, Dark Bites. In this episode of Be Our Guest, I interview my good friend Wally Collingwood, who has one of the most amazing (even bizarre!) life stories of anyone I have ever known. Wally's story includes time in the U.S. Air Force, experiences with the occult, incarceration in the Mansfield Reformatory (of Shawshank Redemption fame), supernatural deliverance, and decades of service in building God's Kingdom both in prisons and our own home turf in Hartville, Ohio. Prepare to be blessed by Wally's gripping testimony. Can being in a haunted location have a long-term, negative impact on a person? We discuss this idea with Scott Sukel and Zippy who spent many years at the historical Mansfield Reformatory in Ohio. Scott Sukel went into very personal detail about how volunteering and working at this former prison affected him and how leaving it all behind was probably the best thing for his mind and his health. If you want a recap on the ghostly stories of Mansfield Reformatory, listen to episode 49 when Scott and Zippy were with us on January 22, 2019.

Plenty of ghost stories center around the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio, also known as the Mansfield Reformatory. Built between the years of 1880 and 1910, it was originally considered one of the finest prisons in the United States, and is now known as one of the most haunted places in the Buckeye state. After the prison shut down in 1990, it became famous for several reasons - The Shawshank Redemption was filmed there, and the spirits of long-dead prisoners wander the institution's halls. Over the course of the Mansfield Reformatory's existence, over 200 prisoners alone perished within its walls. #truecrimepodcast #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #podcast #truecrimejunkie #murder #podcastersofinstagram #crime #serialkillers #truecrimeobsessed #murderino #truecrimememes #truecrimefan #serialkiller #ssdgm #podcasts #unsolvedmysteries #unsolved #mystery #podcasting #truecrimepodcasts #creepy #killer #paranormal #crimejunkie #horror #truecrimes #coldcase #truecrimestories #myfavoritemurder #murdermystery #podcaster #paranormalpodcast #podernfamily #spotifypodcast #scary #spotify #comedypodcast #ladypodsquad #newpodcast #podcastlife #mfm #applepodcasts #homicide #criminal #podcastaddict #horrorpodcast #history #death #truecrimelover #tedbundy #truecrimeallthetime #truecrimeandchill #missingperson #applepodcast #murderinos #murderpodcast #podcasters #truecrimebooks
Welcome to the Two Scaredy Cats Podcast,On this episode we talk about our recent adventure that included a tour of The Ohio State Reformatory. On Saturday Aug 6, 2022 we went on a tour of the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield Ohio. Most of you might recognize this place from the movie Shawshank Redemption which was from a short story written by the master of horror Stephen King. This place has been on our bucket list to visit for a few years now. Over 215 people have died in and around the grounds of the reformatory including a farm boss and his family, and a warden and his wife. Numerous inmates have died on the property from diseases like influenza, and tuberculosis while others have died violent deaths from suicide, or being killed by a cellmate. This place has had a ton of deaths by violence on its grounds, that make it the perfect storm for ghost and spirits to exist. We've visited abandoned hospitals, roads, state parks, ghost towns, hotels, and battlefields. Today, we'll be discussing a location which fits the bill for hauntings almost better than any other, a former prison known as Mansfield Reformatory, that many believe to be one of the most haunted locations in the United States.

Tyger is back! We talk about Stephen King's work in film and books. We also talk about some locations we went to.
The return of Edgar Mills, storyteller extraordinaire... described as part Hitchcock and all dark. With a personal ghost story from a woman. As a family friend passes away, a message passed through her daughter in the most terrifying of ways. Then Daniel dives into ghost stories of Mansfield Reformatory. Considered one of the most haunted locations in the world, definitely in the United States. Stories from visitors, as featured in the article (found here - https://ghostwalks.com/articles/mansfield-collection-ghost-stories). Including the real experience of being pushed on stairs. And workers in the confined Solitary wing, plus more! Finally, imagine walking into the room and finding your dog staring intently at an empty couch. Daniel's doesn't need to imagine... he's living it! His "attached at the hip" dog Edgar (no relation to Mills) has been seen paying close attention to something on the couch. Animal sensitivity to spirits might explain it... or the dog's just nuts (Daniel hopes)! Like the NEW! Ghost Guide Daniel Facebook page - www.facebook.com/ghostguidedaniel

TW: Suicide is dicussed in this episode, this episode may not be for everyone, listeners discretion advised.Tori leads off with the infamous Mansfield Reformatory and it's sketchy history. This prison started off with good intentions but quickly became overcrowded and dangerous to both the guards and prisoners alike. Made famous by Shawshank Redemption, this prison has been the site of several movie scenes, even when the prison was in operation. The violent history of this prison has made a mark that has refused to go away. From ghosts on fire to things grabbing people to this day. There are so many stories in this one location. And of course there are ghost tours. You can even participate in a ghost hunting class and then use your new skills to explore the prison. Krysti brings up the rear with Twin City Opera House, this turned out to be the Ohio episode. This continues to function as government offices, a movie theater, and the Ohio Valley Opry. It also has our favorite thing, paranormal tours! Both Public and private tours are hosted there. They have the good guys running that part of the show, United Paranormal Project. With 14 ghosts to choose from, this is a great place to witness paranormal activity. Some weird stories are tied to the opera as well. There is also Charlie, who may or may not be a ghost. Our sources:mrps.org, destionationmansfield.com, thetravel.com, ohioexploration.com, onlyinfourstat.com, ghostwalks.com, ranker.com, amp.cantonrep.com, Texas Chicks Who Talk Murder Podcast, Theresashauntedhistoryofthetri-state.blogspot.com,Twincityoperahouse.com, Onlyinyourstate.com,Projects.thepostathens.com, Operahouseinc.com, Ohio.orgOur theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast Find us at FB/Instagram @TrendyLobotomyPod and at Twitter @TrendyPod as well as our blog trendylobotomypodcast.blogspot.com Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast?fan_landing=true)
Ghosts come from history but also can be part of it. Over the years many inmates and guards have shared their stories. This, and the dark history surrounding this extremely haunted place. Mansfield Reformatory deserves its paranormal infamy.

Researchers say that answers can be found in ghost hunting. What is the evidence, and what has been found to support the assertion that our souls continue on after death? Some evidence does seem to indicate truth to the horror like aspect belonging to alleged poltergeists, but on the contrary, there are also inspiring contact experiences giving hope to those who fear death. Joining me this week in the first hour is paranormal investigator Rick McCallum; followed by supernatural adventurer Paul Eno! We hear quite the varying perspectives and interpretations of the phenomena, including pontifications on time travel, purpose of living, entity encounters and ultimately a hopeful message.Metaphysics • Spirituality • Philosophy • HauntingsRick McCallum:Rick has been a professional stuntman, actor and stunt coordinator for over 35 years, and has more than 75 movie and TV projects to his name. Ohio is chock full of interesting historical places to explore. No matter where you go, you'll find something of significance. One such place is the Ohio State Reformatory, which has also been called the Mansfield Reformatory. It's located in Mansfield, and it was once a prison, though these days, it's known as a famous historical landmark—and it's even on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Reformatory isn't the only piece of history surrounding this site, either. This place's roots go back as far as the Civil War. If you're ready to learn more, keep listening to the podcast... The nightmare came to a head, when the child was no only feet away, she was laying on her back facing the dark door leading to a very peculiar crawl space. Keeping it in the Midwest this week! Kala talks about the luxurious The Elms hotel and spa in Excelsior Springs, MO. Brittany heads in the opposite direction by discussing the absolutely-not-luxurious Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield, OH. Not much in common here... Except for the whole "being haunted" thing. Kala makes multiple references to things she swore made her edgy as a teenager, and Brittany makes multiple references to cats. So it's back to business as usual...

In older, abandoned instituations, sometimes sinister torture occurred that has left behind a dark impression that still exists today. The places on this list gained a reputation not just for what went on during their heyday, but more so for what went on afterward. These are the Top 5 Most Frightening Asylums & Hospitals in the World. 5. Eloise Hospital Considered the most haunted location in Michigan, the Eloise Hospital or Asylum has become synonymous with ghost stories and hauntings. First opening in 1839, it was named after Eloise Davock, the daughter of Detroit’s then-postmaster. The structure operated from 1839 thru 1982 and was initially created as a poor house and farm. Eventually, additional structures were added into what would become The Eloise Hospital, The Eloise Infirmary and the Eloise Sanatorium. All three made up one large complex and At its height, it had become such a self-sufficient place that it even had its own postal code. 4. Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital Considered by CNN as one of the eeriest places to exist on Earth, the Gonjiam Psychiatric Clinic can be found in the small remote village of Gwangju, South Korea. Set against the backdrop of a lush forest, the now-abandoned psychiatric hospital has been left to ruins after it mysteriously closed down in 1995. Although no one knows for sure why it closed, there were a number of reasons put forth. Some were mundane saying it was primarily an issue in sewage disposal, and that the building didn’t have the proper systems in place. 3. Ohio State Reformatory Originally called the Mansfield Reformatory, Ohio State Reformatory is not only well known for its dark and sinister legacy but also because of its beautiful Gothic architecture. It first opened in 1886 with Its main purpose to humanely rehabilitate first time offenders. This goal earned the reformatory praise for its revolutionary step towards prison reform. 2. Tranquille Sanatorium Built in 1907, the Tranquille Sanatorium sits in a small town known simply as Tranquille in British Columbia, Canada. This sanatorium was first set up by King George the 7th as a primary center for treating and containing tuberculosis patients. 1. Danvers Lunatic Asylum Built towards the end of the 19th century, Danvers Lunatic Asylum has become an iconic structure in the Boston, Massachusetts area. Set on a hilltop, the asylum occupied 1.5 miles of land and followed the strict mental asylum system known as the Kirkbride Plan. With this design, the central administrative building was placed at the center while the buildings towards the East housed the female patients and the West reserved for the males. The farthest buildings were places for the most “dysfunctional” patients, essentially the ones put in cages.

Small towns can breed some interesting people. I traveled thousands of miles to meet with an interesting fella, Doug White, and talk all things beard clubbing. President of the Beards of the Old Northwest Rock Creek Chapter, Doug has a great group of guys surrounding him that really help out their local community. They all have big hearts and the desire to do good things for those that are in need as opposed to use club status in a competitive nature. I really learned a lot about how a club can pull together with a common goal, and drive, to make a difference. The Rock Creek club have teamed up with the Beattitude House to continuously help them collect items that they need and to also help them fix up their facilities back to working order. The Paranormal world is something Doug is interested in as well as I and we discussed Sasquatch, ghosts and ufo's. We also discussed the Mansfield Reformatory, home of Beards Behind Bars 2 this summer, as being one of the most haunted places to visit in the country. Be sure to take a tour when you come down to Beards Behinds Bars June 30th 2018. We dig kinda deep into our beliefs on passing through dimensions and religious implications. We finish off this episode with talking about the charm of small towns and small town living. It was really interesting to get the perspective from someone who doesn't need much to be happy. Their club is really a brotherhood and a family that spends a lot of time together having fun and doing good. I really enjoy being around Doug and his group whenever we cross paths in the bearding world. Be sure to check out these links below and find out more about their club and the Beattitude House. Mr. Matt Cox is one amazing guy. This mustached man is going to be a major player in the mustache, and beard scene with his impeccable style and thoughtful content. "Mr. Stachetastic" is the alter ego of Matt where he does all types of beard oil and mustache wax reviews. Matt and I got together on Thanksgiving evening to hang out and chat a little about who he is and why I thought he would be an interesting person to share. We talked about the typical things two guys who are in the facial hair world would talk about but Matt had an incredible entry into the world of growing. Touching on the paranormal and his multiple encounters during ghost hunting at the Mansfield Reformatory, Scott talks about the event his club is hosting at the prison in July of 2017, and a possible planned ghost hunt of our own! We also made plans to head to Mt. Pleasant next year to hit up the annual Mothman festival and use our facial hair to get to the bottom of the mystery. Together Matt and I can change the world!!! Shannon Lusk and Scott Sukel of the Ohio State Mansfield Reformatory talk with Nathan S and Magnus Apollo about the Ghost of the famous prison seen in The Shawshank Redemption and on Ghost Adventurers.Built in 1834, the Ohio Penitentiary was actually the second Ohio Penitentiary, the third state prison, and the fourth jail in early Columbus. In April 1955 it housed an all-time high of 5,235 prisoners. Most prisoners were removed from the prison by 1972 with the completion of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, and the facility was closed in 1984. The state sold the Ohio Penitentiary to the City of Columbus in 1995.Stone walls and iron bars they’re still here, but what of the humanity, if you can call it that, of the old Ohio State Reformatory at Mansfield. What of the 154,000 inmates who passed through it’s gates in it’s 94 years as a working prison. Not to mention their keepers, the Wardens, and the Guards, the gravediggers, and the rest, what of them remains? As it turns out, more than you might think. No matter what their crime, some sent to Mansfield have never left. They rest unclaimed in a cheerless graveyard just outside the fence. 215 numbered markers laid out row on row. Most were victims of disease, influenza, tuberculosis, but some died of less natural causes; From the violence, that is all to common inside any prison and was far from unknown in this one. And the worst of it occurred well away from the main cell block with their rows of cages stacked tier on tier, and inmates, one or two to a cell. There were too many eyes, too many witnesses here, no the worst of it was reserved for a far lonelier place, deep beneath the prison ground. A place called local control, or solitary, by some, known by everyone else as the hole. Near total isolation can crack all but the toughest of cons, but none was so alone that there wasn’t room for death. At least one inmate managed to hang himself, another set himself on fire, once two men left too long in a single tomb like cell, only one walked out, leaving his cellmate’s body behind, stuffed beneath a bunk. Could there be other similar surprises? Or words left over from the days before the prison closed? Even when they’re empty, some swear something walks these halls. It isn’t enough for contemporary visitors not to wonder off alone while sight seeing, what‘s become one of Mansfield’s more popular tourist attractions. But the bloodiest single incident in the old prison’s history occurred outside it’s walls. In July 1948, when the Reformatory’s farm boss, his wife and daughter were kidnapped and shot to death by two parolees bent on revenge. A six state manhunt for the so called mad-dog killers ended in a shootout that left Robert Daniels of Columbus in custody and his partner, James West dead. “I’ll get the Chair” Daniels told police as he signed the confession. And on January 3rd, 1949, he did. A year later in 1950 disaster struck again. This time, here in the living quarters of the Warden himself. The Warden’s wife, removing a jewelry box from a closet shelf dislodged a pistol from it’s hiding place. When it hit the floor, the gun went off inflicting a fatal wound. And within the decade, even more bad luck. The Warden, hard at work in his office, suffered a heart attack and died. All this was nearly 40 years ago and more, how then to explain the voices shaken tour guides swear they hear today? Man and woman talking, to faint to understand, to persistent to ignore and chilling to listeners who think they’re alone, only to find themselves apparently eavesdropping on the warden and his wife locked forever in an endless conversation from beyond the grave.Download 03-14-10
