The Gateway Podcast – Joe Rainone– EVPs Date: Dec 31, 2024 Episode: 57 Discussion: EVP's RERUN About Joe : Unlike most, Joe Rainone did not have a previous paranormal experience that prompted him to start investigating. For him, the subject of the paranormal was always a fascinating topic that intrigued him throughout his youth. It wasn't until adulthood that he began to actively pursue his childhood interest in the field. Over the past several years, Joe has been deeply involved in paranormal investigations, exploring some of the most haunted locations in the country, including Waverly Hills, Ohio State Reformatory, Eastern State Penitentiary, Pennhurst Asylum, Rolling Hills Asylum, and the Shanley Hotel, to name just a few. Though he considers himself a “skeptic” first and foremost, Joe's experiences during his investigations have introduced him to numerous unexplainable phenomena. These encounters have significantly expanded his knowledge of the field and further fueled his passion for paranormal research. Over the years, he has also had the privilege of meeting many wonderful people within the paranormal community. Looking back on his journey, Joe wouldn't change a thing. Host: CL Thomas C.L. Dan has a murder-mystery-nightmare double header this week. I have a murder mystery double feature. The story of a woman harassed by a psychopath, both before AND after her death, was she not harassed by a psychopath, but something else? The second story is another report of a young woman being murdered under strange circumstances regarding her possible killer, and allegations of a haunting that has followed her death. Then Lynze has three tales this week! Her first involves a creepy visitor to an Air BnB in the middle of nowhere. Next up, an unexplained encounter with who-knows-what during a very private moment. And then wrapping up the episode, our fan story takes us back to the Pennhurst Asylum. Scholarship: Round two of The Cummins Family Scholarship Fund, presented by Bad Magic is here! Sort of. In the years since, he's had the privilege of helping to repair and maintain the historic structure, give tours, and manage the location's social media channels. He started the Waverly Hills Tiktok account and gained more than 100 thousand followers before he left. These days, he travels the country to discover brand-new abandoned locations and revisit old favorites. Urban exploration (often shortened as UE, urbex, and sometimes known as roof and tunnel hacking) is the exploration of manmade structures, usually abandoned ruins or hidden components of the manmade environment. Photography and historical interest/documentation are heavily featured in the hobby, sometimes involving trespassing onto private property. Urban exploration is also called draining (a specific form of urban exploration where storm drains or sewers are explored), urban spelunking, urban rock climbing, urban caving, building hacking, or mousing. The activity presents various risks, including physical danger and, if done illegally and/or without permission, the possibility of arrest and punishment.

In the early 1900s, tuberculosis was the leading cause of death in the US. Patients were quarantined far from society and subject to archaic treatments. Now, the site of those treatments is said to be home to countless ghosts. Today, we tell the story of one of the most haunted places in the US, Waverly Hills Sanatorium. Content warning: self-harm, patient abuse. Recorded Live at Strange Escapes, Waverly Hills Event Pennhurst Asylum may have opened with the best of intentions, but it didn't end up that way. In its 79 years of operation, the asylum was characterized by the harshest of patient mistreatment. Its more than 10,000 residents were subjected to what the Philadelphia Inquirer described as “medical experimentation, cruel punishments, and constant threats to physical and psychological well-being.” Residents were trapped, forced into labor against their will, unable to leave, out of control of the most basic elements of their own lives. And that was the adults. Children under five years old were kept in cages, lying in their own filth for days on end. As one newspaper put it in 1972, Pennhurst Asylum was “the shame of Pennsylvania.” Many inmates stayed there as long as 35 years. And some never left. Pennhurst Asylum was never actually an asylum. It was previously Pennhurst State School and Hospital, one of the most notoriously harmful institutions for people with disabilities. Today, it's the site of a haunted Halloween attraction and paranormal tours, despite some strong opposition. What happened there, and how it closed, has shaped disability rights and advocacy today. Sabrina Boyd-Surka visits Pennhurst and talks to disability advocates and historians to get the real story behind these abandoned walls. Mike Seibel is a Shenandoah Valley ghost-tour guide, history buff & founder of Black Raven Paranormal in Staunton, Virginia. This Halloween special begins on abandoned lunatic asylums from the 1800-1900's: what they were like in their time, dark ideas of American eugenics, the local DeJarnette Sanitarium, and a story about Marty's paranormal investigation of the notoriously haunted Pennhurst Asylum. Then we get into more of his traveling investigations: a grisly axe-murder house, the apparition of a Gettysburg midwife, a cursed doll named Robert, and a demonic country bar. We end on paranormal etiquette, his overall grounded approach, & insight from working with mediums. Ep. 81 While we make look at asylums today as barbaric, they were actually a much better option for people deemed to be “lunatics" (how awful) at least in their inception. Before this time people's families would lock them in basements, chain them to walls, and deprive them of basic humanity. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding and overcrowding and some just plain awful practices from doctors at the time, many of the patients at asylums suffered the same types of atrocities and sometimes even worse ones. In this episode we explore the real-life horrors that happened in these grandiose institutions, tell a few haunting stories and give you a list of movies to watch if you want to be further creeped out. || Real relatable entertainment focusing on history, culture and curiosities || 2 Monicas Podcast a Nothing Serious Production https://www.2monicaspodcast.com Follow us on all social media @2monicaspodcast Additional podcasts: Parenting with Heart Spotlight Interviews Legacy Sponsors for Season Two: www.kristinschmokecoaching.com www.skinbyamethyst.com Kris Porter, Travel Concierge (@travelwithgraceandjoy)

This location is filled with a lot of heavy, graphic topics, so listener discretion is advised. From patient mistreatment, rumors of bad dentistry, and too many incident reports, it's no wonder this former hospital in Pennsylvania is rumored to be haunted. But is there anything to back of the claims? We have some opinions. Listen now! We'd appreciate it if you took a moment to help our podcast by rating and reviewing on apple and NOW on Spotify! In this episode of the True Hauntings Podcast we invite you to look behind the security doors of the Pennhurst State School and Hospital as we discover the many shades of blackness in its corridors and in the cold dark heart of man.Is this place still haunted? The question is why would any spirit wish to stay here unless they are truly lost and hopelessly traumatised because of the living conditions that they had to endure in life at the hands of doctors in this institution. This is a horror story of the treatment of those who were mentally ill and physically disabled in the early 1900's.It is the story of the souls that survived under terrible conditions and how a place of deep trauma has now been reinvented to give a voice to the voiceless. If you want to see what Anne and Renata are up to join them on their social media platforms at Anne and Renata.Follow Anne and Renata:Facebook: @AnneAndRenataInstagram: @AnneAndRenataYouTube: @AnneAndRenataTikTok: @AnneAndRenata#mentalasylum #trauma #humantragedy #pennhurstasylum #hospitalforthefeebleminded #ghosts #hauntedsite #hauntedasylums #hauntings #truehauntings #anneandrenata #torture #doctorfear #apparitions #hauntedsitesUSA #Pennhurst #followanneandrenata Visit www.anneandrenata.com for more spookiness.
