Described as a "festive prison yard" by famed New Yorker baseball essayist Roger Angell during the 1962 World Series, San Francisco's famed Candlestick Park was equally loved and hated by sports teams and fans alike during its 43-year-long run as the dual home of baseball's Giants and the NFL's 49ers. Curiously (and perhaps illegally) built on a landfill atop a garbage dump at the edge of San Francisco Bay, the "'Stick" was notorious for its tornadic winds, ominous fogs and uncomfortably chilly temperatures - especially in its first decade as an open-facing, largely baseball-only park. Though fully enclosed in 1971 to accommodate the arrival of the football 49ers (replacing the stadium's grass surface with the more-dual-purpose Astroturf to boot), the aesthetics changed little - made worse by the elimination of the park's previously lovely view of San Francisco's downtown. But there were sports to be had. While the Giants only won two NL pennants during their time at Candlestick (despite some huge talent and multiple future Hall of Famers), the 49ers brought perennial playoff-caliber football to the venue - including five NFL titles and a record 36 appearances on ABC's "Monday Night Football" - before leaving for Santa Clara in 2014. Sportswriter Steven Travers ("Remembering the Stick: Candlestick Park: 1960–2013") takes us back in time to recount the good, bad and downright bizarre of one of the Bay Area's most unique sports venues.
While Madolyn is off charging rocks in the desert, this week we're opening up the It's On Like DCOM Vault, with an episode recorded way back in March 2016! A time before pandemics, bright red trucker hats, and good ZOOM microphones. When we used to sing and dance our ways through the halls of East High. That's right! We're talkin' High School Musical, baby. All I remember is pink jelly... Listen as we 'Stick to the Status Quo', and probably dunk too hard on this DCOM “classic”… It's On Like DCOM! Jemele Hill & Cari Champion Talk betting on yourself, leaving ESPN, and their new VICE show Sticking to Sports. Jamele Hill Cari Champion. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited to speaking to you all. And congratulations on your new show. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for even being interested in talking to us I was so excited when I got the call that I was going to be able to talk to you all because I'd already seen you posted on your Instagram. Post the preview and I was like oh my god, this is gonna be good. ...shenanigans shenanigans. I hope we live up to the teasers that they've been able to put out so we're doing our best. Yeah, they made us look funnier than we may. you're gonna live up to it. Well, I like to start every interview by asking What is something that you're grateful for? A great way to start an interview, okay. I'm praying I'm Amen. I am grateful for Believe it or not the year 2020 Hmm, I'm grateful for the way in which it has made America the world, pay attention to things that matter. Um, it's very easy to be like 2020 is perfect vision but I feel no one can hide any longer under the guise of being a good person or being a part of a movement that they really aren't a part of. I think although I think that we are removing all the the disingenuous people out of society and we're seeing who people are for who in their true state admit to me, I'd rather know what I'm dealing with and not so for me, grateful for that education. No matter how painful it's been, no matter how hard it's been. I am grateful for that education. This year has been beautiful for me professionally. I walked away and jumped off the ledge of ESPN and decided to trust myself and bet on myself. And it has paid dividends huge. And so this year has been nothing but great for me. I know it sounds horrible to say, but really just looking at it from a big picture, I just see that in society, we have to be at a better place. And we're exposing all of these fakes. And we are letting people who have authentic voices and real true good hearts push through and be elevated. And that's what we need. I think I'm grateful for the season. I mean, because more than I guess, the year because it could be beyond just 2020. I'm grateful for this season in life. You know, I think a lot of black women in particular are stepping into their power. I think we're reflective of being to black women who are stepping into theirs. As Carrie mentioned, she not to me, it feels like you left ESPN like years ago, and it's only been a few months. Yeah. And she got all the jobs, all the jobs, all the jobs, right. So there's something really significant about what she said about betting on yourself. I've been in this season now, since I left ESPN and I left in 2018, where I've just taken all these different chances and risks, and really been very vigilant about not compromising who I am to have work and been very thankful that I don't have to do that, too, in order to work and work abundantly in this business. And so I think that's a big reason why we're at this point right now with this with this show is like we both did the same thing, and that we both bet on ourselves. We both were looking for a situation where we can have maximum autonomy, autonomy, and that will respect our creativity will be more of a collaboration, then I'm working for you that kind of situation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/godismyagent/support

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Trina Turk's self-named fashion label made 15% of its sales through e-commerce. But with Neiman Marcus' filing for bankruptcy in May and an ongoing lack of foot traffic at mall stores, Turk ideally wants that percentage raised to 50% or more. "If they weren't shopping online prior to this whole thing, they are jumping online now," Turk said about shoppers on the Glossy Podcast. "I don't think we're alone in really examining how we can pivot our business to be much more e-comm-focused. Turk talked about managing her relationship with department stores to minimize the excess inventory brought about by the global retail shutdown, exploring the potential of client meetings done via Zoom and hiring more diversely once the company recovers from its layoffs and hiring freeze.
An Auckland University linguist says the expression "stick to your knitting" can be traced back at least 150 years, but he probably will not be using it again. Dr Keith Montgomery from Auckland University's linguistics department says the idiom has morphed to mean stick with what you know, but would have originally literally meant stick to your knitting. Lisa Owen asked him if he thought the expression was derogatory.
The knitting community is split over whether National MP Paul Goldsmith's comments on Tuesday telling the Prime Minister to 'stick to her knitting' were offensive. It came after Jacinda Ardern expressed anger at The Warehouse for announcing 1,000 job losses, despite taking more than $65 million in government wage subsidies. Paul Goldsmith later conceded it was a poor choice of words and some people might have seen it as disrespectful. His own deputy Nikki Kaye says she had her own words with him about his words. So what do the knitters - men and women think about it all? Katie Doyle with this yarn.
COMMENT:How is "stick to your knitting" sexist?National MP Paul Goldsmith said it yesterday in regards to the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's new role as CEO of large companies, now that she's finished being an epidemiologist. He said for her to bully business through the media was not cool, that she should "stick to her knitting".This all came about after she said she was "angry" with The Warehouse layoffs. This is ironic all by itself, given not moments earlier she'd been telling us all to support New Zealand business and focus on the economy. Yet she seemed to throw her much feted kindness out the window and now be "angry" with a retailer.Clearly New Zealand business gets support only when it does as the Government wants, which is not to let people go because that's a bad look.Stick your knitting - is like saying "stay in your lane".It's a widely used and accepted metaphor in business, universally acknowledged as being genderless, it's not remotely sexist. I'm not sure how anyone could claim it was.The only way that's sexist is if you're looking for it to be, and you're perceiving it as such, which actually makes you sexist, because you're assuming only women can knit. What's even worse here, is that the National Party leadership allegedly "had words" with Goldsmith about his language. Are you kidding?Have they seen the language politicians throw around? "Stick to your knitting" seems like playschool compared to what gets said. What about Stuart Nash calling Nick Smith a "bloody loser"? What about when Winston Peters asked the Speaker to "throw fatty out", referring to Gerry Brownlee? Or when he called Steven Joyce "weak, wobbly and woeful"?David Seymour called Winston Peters "Grandpa". Tamati Coffey referred to Melissa Lee as "love". And the Prime Minister herself once referred to Simon Bridges as "Simple Simon".My point is, "stick to your knitting" does not even come close to these barbs and insults, because it isn't one. And it certainly isn't sexist. If I was the Prime Minister, I'd be offended that people keep jumping up and down to defend me - based on the fact I'm female. Are they saying that because she's a woman she can't hold her own? Is every criticism levelled the PM's way now going to be called sexist? Does she need constant rescuing and defending and other politicians have to adjust their language around her?The worst part of all of this is of course the National Party's response.Reacting to the Prime Minister's defence dogs by "having words" over the metaphors raised around her is a complete waste of their time and energy. It's a manufactured distraction and they fell right into the trap. They need to harden up.Less time talking to MPs about their language, and more time working up an effective election campaign.Otherwise the only people left knitting come September will be them.

" Long, mellow song intros are a thing of the past in the age of streaming, as artists scramble to catch your attention in the first 30 seconds of every track. That's because streaming services pay artists royalties only after a customer has listened to 30 seconds. Pop artists are responding, dispensing with the longer instrumental intros of the past and bringing the hook and the refrain earlier into each song. Not everyone likes the effect this is having on songwriting. Plus, learn what it means to ""stick around."" While checking out my Twitter feed the other night, I happened upon the page of Rich Eisen, an NFL Network anchor.Eisen, who hosts one of the best sports talk shows in the business, posted a link to a Baltimore Sun editorial which took President Trump to task over his tweets directed at Congressman Elijah Cummings.Eisen retweeted the piece with the sentence, “Without question, the most scathing op-ed I’ve ever read.” Seems innocuous enough, right?

*** Wow! Amazing rants and discussions on the virtues of stick shift cars and manual airplanes. We discussed our humanity and how the manual experience increases our humanity, gives a sense of accomplishment, and actually is safer for ADHD boys per a study. Same with airplanes. New pilots are more systems managers and have lost their basic manual flying skills, if they ever had them. *** During the OMG Report we heard from Wendy Arthur and her guest Bev Kilmer, on her church political agenda, and why there is nothing wrong with that. *** Lastly I continued my discussion on why it's better, safer and more interesting to use technology that requires human input and decisions, than relying on technology to do it all for us. It's another gathering of this unique and talented group to celebrate what we can of 2016, we have LIVE music and more for John's Birthday (he competes with Jesus' Birthday...it's the least we could do), We are LIVE at The Whiskey Ring (on Cherokee) and our guest list is superb as usual! It's Dec. 23rd, and BIG Thanks to Monkh (Monkh.us - @MonkhUS on Twitter) as our first guest, he performs 2 songs - one is a John and Kane Show EXCLUSIVE - Never before performed, and available here for download! (Please forgive any audio integrity issues - we are still working on our mobile rig) Monkh sounded great and sets the tone for the longest podcast in John and Kane Show history, with our next guest - and old friend of the show: Gary Burger (BurgerLaw.com) Gary is a Top Rated Trial Lawyer in the Bi-State area, getting fair and full compensation for clients who are victims of accidents or damages that aren't their fault - he comes in to intentionally ignore John! We have a very educational, rational conversation about politics - Kane thinks you'll either tune out, or learn something:) And speaking of tuning out - our next guest is 'comedian' Joe Lehnig - who we discover has been fired from over 60 jobs - NOT a joke. It's always unpredictable when Joe gets behind the mic - and that's what we'll say about that. Then one of our favorites - and not just because she brings wonderful adult beverages...! It's our Certified Sommelier (and soon to be SUPER Sommelier) Alisha Blackwell, CSW @ExquisiteVines on Twitter and Instagram and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/exquisitevines/ As she is known to do, Alisha educates us on the subtle differences and attractive properties of the adult beverages she shared with us...we love Alisha and wish her a lifetime of happiness when she gets married in May! Our love for our old producer 'Stick certainly is expressed on her rare visit to the show - it's always fun to have her, and John seems to have fun poking fun and Jenn handles herself in memorable fashion - oh, she is missed - Happy Birthday to her as well:) And we cannot ignore the people who have made this podcast possible - starting with Adam White who has been a consistent part of the show for the last 2 years - along with 'Lord' Thomas Fortenberry coordinating guests and information, and Andy Faulstich ('Bad Andy') who is our utility, video guy, a great friend to John and the show - and made the Whiskey Ring connection! ALSO - another John and Kane Show 'First' - we bring in 'Random Guy We Don't Know' for a 'Random Man Interview' - it was quite a night, actually...! Big Happy Birthday to John!
