In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by Irwin Sparkes and Alan Sharland from The Hoosiers to discuss their new album Compassion. The band first broke through in 2007 with their debut album The Trick to Life, featuring huge singles including "Worried About Ray" and "Goodbye Mr A." But this conversation is not just about looking back. It is about where The Hoosiers are now — creatively, personally and emotionally. Irwin and Alan talk about making Compassion, the ideas behind the record, rediscovering joy, holding on to self-belief, and what it means to meet the world with more humanity after years of change, pressure and experience. They also reflect on friendship, survival, the band's journey, the lessons learned along the way, and why this new chapter feels so important. The full video version of this conversation is available on the XS Noize YouTube channel. The XS Noize Podcast is an independent, long-form music interview series hosted by Mark Millar, featuring in-depth conversations with artists, songwriters, producers and cultural figures about the stories behind the music. What if the best leadership coaching you get this week comes from a movie night? We start with a deceptively simple question: what's your favorite work-adjacent movie, and why does it feel true to real life at work? From there we connect scenes, characters, and team dynamics to the problems leaders deal with every day: pressure, performance, trust, and what to do when someone needs a push to see their own potential. We dig into Hoosiers and A League Of Their Own to talk about coaching, role clarity, and the underrated skill of building a strong team with the people you actually have. That leads to a blunt truth about management and workplace culture: everyone is imperfect, including the leader, so the job is to maximize strengths, reduce friction, and keep moving toward the goal without pretending people are easy. Then we jump to work-related TV shows, from Ted Lasso as a leadership primer to The Office as a painfully familiar workplace mirror. We even wrestle with the idea that “mind games” exist in business, while also naming the line you don't cross: “killing people is not a good business plan.” The episode closes with practical reflective questions, a reminder to pivot when things get stuck, and a story about teaching emotional intelligence without fancy jargon. If you've ever learned more from a character than a training deck, you'll feel seen. Subscribe for more, share this with a coworker who loves pop culture, and leave a review with the movie or show that taught you the most about leadership.

Soccer is the world's most popular sport, yet its origins are shrouded in chaos, and its modern “analytics” are often flawed. ⚽ HOW TO WATCH SOCCER LIKE A GENIUS (Abrams Press, May 12, 2026) by Nick Greene https://amzn.to/4eVb8ve ⚽ Author Nick Greene joins The Brian D. O'Leary Show to dismantle everything you thought you knew about “the beautiful game”. Using insights from architects, stuntwomen, paleoanthropologists, and computer scientists, we tear into the history of soccer's bizarre early rules and expose why American youth player development is fundamentally broken. Timed with the World Cup coming to North America, this conversation uncovers soccer's shared roots with American football and rugby, revealing a time when the sport featured fair catches and touchdowns. We dig into how the introduction of the FA Cup forced a standard set of rules, and contrast Scotland's early tactical advantage through passing with England's aristocratic refusal to share the ball. We also explore a disastrous 1940s analytics study that set English tactics back decades, the space-warping genius of Lionel Messi, and the absurd limits of modern optimization. Finally, we celebrate, but Greene critiques, the American youth soccer focus on the “battering ram” approach over actual technique. Subscribe at https://OLearyReview.com for more from UNRELENTING – The O'Leary Review. Conversation Highlights (Chapters) The World Cup and Unlikely Soccer Experts The Shared DNA of Soccer, Rugby, and American Football Freemasons, Fair Catches, and the FA Cup Scotland's Passing vs. England's Selfishness The RAF Pilot Who Ruined English Tactics Why the Best Team Doesn't Always Win Lionel Messi's Space-Warping Genius Tottenham's Showers and the Limits of Analytics Could Shaq Have Revolutionized Soccer? Key Takeaways Shared Roots: Soccer, rugby, and American football share the same origins. Early soccer even featured fair catches and touchdowns. The Forward Pass: Scotland dominated early international soccer by embracing a passing game, while wealthy English players selfishly refused to pass the ball. Bad Math: A flawed 1940s study by a retired RAF pilot convinced English soccer that passing was useless, leading to a long era of “caveman long ball tactics”. Mastering Space: Lionel Messi changes the gravity of the field, often accomplishing more by walking through space than other players do by sprinting. The Battering Ram: American youth soccer prioritizes winning through sheer size, whereas elite global academies focus entirely on technique. Tweetable Quotes “The fact that the best team doesn't always win is… the most to me, natural human thing about soccer.” - Nick Greene “People who don't watch or aren't interested in sports are missing out because it's such a Rosetta Stone.” - Nick Greene “They're learning how to be battering rams and kick the ball to the battering ram.” - Nick Greene Resources Mentioned HOW TO WATCH SOCCER LIKE A GENIUS (Abrams Press, May 12, 2026) by Nick Greene: https://amzn.to/4eVb8ve Hoosiers (1986): https://amzn.to/43hOfuS (Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.) It then turns into a conversation between coach and former player where Sam reveals where he got the idea for the scuba celebration, which former MLS player DMed him about it, and so much more. The Indiana baseball team finished in second-to-last place in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers entered the season with plenty of questions about their coaching staff and ended the season with few bright spots. A decision could be looming in Bloomington. On the softball field, Shonda Stanton's squad won 43 games and finished fourth in the Big Ten. The team qualified for an NCAA regional for a program record fourth year in a row. The Hoosiers had a great season, but showed what they were lacking when they faced better teams. Sammy and Campbell break it all down. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Historical fiction meets raw human resilience in this rich conversation with award-winning author Jennifer Wright on this episode of the True Fiction Project. Jennifer's book, Last Light Over Galveston, centers on women's empowerment during the turn of the century, following a young woman who defies her wealthy family in search of purpose, only to find herself stranded in Galveston as a monster hurricane bears down. Jennifer reveals how writing fiction based on real historical events gives readers the empathy that dry textbooks simply cannot. From her journalism roots to her life as an Air Force wife abroad, Jennifer brings an outsider's curiosity and an insider's discipline to every story she tells. Tune in to hear an excerpt of the book to when the character Kathleen arrives in Galveston, contemplating a decision as she arrives at the ocean. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why historical fiction is one of the most powerful tools for helping readers connect emotionally with real historical events, and how award-winning author Jennifer Wright uses storytelling to bring the human side of history to life in ways that journalism and textbooks simply cannot. How women's empowerment in the early 1900s was both revolutionary and dangerous, and what it cost a young woman to walk away from wealth and family in pursuit of purpose and passion during the turn of the century. What the research process looks like for a fiction writing project rooted in a real natural disaster, including how firsthand newspaper accounts from 1900 shaped the world of The Last Light Over Galveston. Why the period voice of historical fiction is one of the most challenging craft elements to master, and how collaboration with a skilled editor protects the authenticity of the story.Subscribe to Reenita's Storytelling Den on Substack for free at https://substack.com/@reenitahora and to her YouTube channel to watch the video version of this episode! https://www.youtube.com/@reenymalCheck out her website to stay up-to-date on events, book releases and more! https://reenita.com/TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 Jennifer Wright, award-winning author, introduces Kathleen, a wealthy woman craving purpose beyond marriage at the turn of the century02:27 Jennifer shares her journey from journalism to marriage to historical fiction and explains why historical storytelling can reveal the human side of history07:30 The plot of Last Light Over Galveston unfolds: women's empowerment, family conflict, and survival during the Galveston Hurricane10:30 Jennifer discusses the different time periods she chooses to write about and how books are marketed15:30 Jennifer and Reenita discuss the challenge of period voice and how editors protect the authenticity of historical fiction18:34 Jennifer Wright reads a snippet of the prologue of Last Light Over Galveston, of character Kathleen's arrival in GalvestonKEY TAKEAWAYS: Historical fiction has a unique power to draw readers into events they might otherwise dismiss. Jennifer Wright's work proves that when you place a fully realized human being inside a natural disaster, readers stop seeing history as a subject and start feeling it as an experience.Jennifer Wright's creative process begins with six months of deep research into a historical event before a single word of fiction is written. Her ability to compress that into three months under a publishing contract for Last Light Over Galveston speaks to both her discipline and her instincts as a fiction writing professional.Labeling books by age category, such as young adult or new adult, can quietly shrink an award-winning author's readership. Wright argues that a compelling protagonist transcends age and that character development should be the draw, not a marketing bracket.ABOUT THE GUEST: Jennifer Wright has been writing since middle school and eventually earned a master's degree in journalism from Indiana University. However, it took only a few short months of covering the local news to realize that writing fiction is much better for the soul–and definitely way more fun. A born-and-bred Hoosier, she was swept off her feet by an Air Force pilot and has spent the past decade traveling the world and, every few years, attempting to fit old curtains into the windows of a new home. She currently resides in New Mexico with her husband and two children. Her debut novel, 'If It Rains,' was nominated for a Kipp Award, and her second novel, 'Come Down Somewhere,' was a 2023 Carol Award finalist. Trump ran as the anti-establishment wrecking ball. Two years back in Washington, he is the establishment — and Indiana voters know it. In this episode, Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the first real battle in the war for the soul of the Republican Party: Trump-backed challengers eating incumbents in a state Mike Pence used to own, while libertarian-leaning Hoosiers tell canvassers they don't want Washington's thumb on the scale, no matter whose thumb it is. The bigger story sits just outside the frame: 40% of Indiana is independent, locked out of a closed primary, and that's where the real action is for 2026 and 2028. From there, Paul looks two weeks down the road at Thomas Massie — the Kentucky congressman Trump is spending extraordinary political capital trying to destroy over Epstein files, deficit hawkishness, and opposition to a new Iran war. Is there still a place for a Massie or a Don Bacon inside the GOP, or does the independent lane finally crack open? Then Paul takes the case of Senator Mark Kelly to MSNBC: a decorated Navy combat veteran, astronaut, and Armed Services Committee member that Pete Hegseth is trying to demote for reminding troops they can refuse illegal orders. It's a direct attack on free speech for two million military retirees and a chilling signal to every active-duty service member watching. This is what the angry middle is up against — and why staying vigilant isn't optional. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Join IVA and stand up to Trump's Forever Wars. -Learn more about Paul's work to elect a new generation of independent leaders with Independent Veterans of America. -Learn more about American Veterans for Ukraine here. -Remember Independent is an Attitude. -Learn more about The Headstrong Project for Veterans, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and Department of Veterans Affairs resources in your area. In this brief travel-day episode of The Wright Report, Bryan shares major political fallout from Indiana's state Senate races, where Republican primary voters sent a loud message to GOP leaders: fight back in the redistricting wars or get replaced. He explains how five of President Trump's seven endorsed candidates won, replacing Republican officials who refused to aggressively redraw congressional maps and allowed Democrats to hold House seats in otherwise deep-red territory. Bryan says the results signal that GOP voters across the country want stronger action at both the state and federal level as the battle over House control intensifies heading into the midterms. He also previews Secretary of State Marco Rubio's upcoming trip to Italy to meet with Pope Leo as tensions continue over immigration and the war with Iran, and delivers a surprising update from the Middle East: the White House says the offensive phase of the Iran conflict is over, while President Trump has suddenly paused Project Freedom and eased pressure in the Strait of Hormuz to give peace negotiations more room. Bryan signals strong disagreement with that move, arguing Iran only responds to strength and warning against allowing Tehran to control one of the world's most critical waterways. Plus, Bryan highlights encouraging economic news for the White House, with factory orders and hiring both rising more than expected despite ongoing pressure from fuel prices, and shares an update on his America 250th anniversary Oregon film project, now heading into editing with teaser videos coming soon.
