In this pop culture driven episode, Spencer and Kevin are joined by special guest Abed Gheith. Abed shares his thoughts on the latest Batman cartoon, "Batman: Caped Crusader," and its noir-inspired take on the classic character. We also jump into the complexities of multiplayer games and the politics involved, particularly in Magic: The Gathering. We also touch on some societal issues, such as the nuances of cancel culture, the expectations we place on public figures, and the complexities of navigating modern social norms regarding language. Break out the ceiling high blackboards, it's time to run the numbers on Hidden Figures. Released in 2016, it was the feel good Oscar movie of the season. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, and fictional white man, Kevin Costner. We're joined by the wonderful Amanda Meadows (Oni Press, Limerence Press) who helps us get to the bottom of who this movie was for (not Black people). We discuss white acceptance as a character arc, "racism-lite", and the fact that someone's grandmother 100% spit on Ruby Bridges. We sadly forgot to recommended movies to watch instead this week, but we all agree you should watch Summer of Soul if you haven't yet. There's surprisingly poignant space stuff in there. Follow Amanda at @Amandonium on Twitter and @Megamanda on Instagram. Part 1 with Abed (March 4th) if you haven’t heard it, was recorded on Feb 20th and I think it was a super fun chat to have about the pop-culture that astounded established our love of creating things, as well as the first instances of performing or recording those ideas. Going into the panel for Frequency 101 we agreed to re-convene on Feb 28th - where like a better podcaster, put a focus on Abed. We did a deep dive into his creative journey both in and out of career, and did a little reflection on the hows and whys of it all. You could say we pick up with the short “Friends & Lovers” and take you all the way to Frequency 101’s “Enter the Dark”. Here we are now with Frequency 101, Episode 8 - March 2021! You get to listen to 9 AWESOME mini audio shows (5 minutes or less) and out of those 9, you vote for the 5 you want to hear another episode by; cancelling the rest. Creator, writer, actor, phone-sexxer.. Abed Gheith (Los Angeles) is a lifelong story-teller (“Streetside” 1990s, Channel 101, Frequency 101) whose work in, and knack for story-telling, sense of humour, fusion of influences and more, I find undeniable. Just look at “Groove Fighters”, “Phone Sexxers”, “The Pop” and “Toon Wolf”… look at the Steve Perry character in “Yacht Rock”.. what about unforgettable pilots like “It’s Twissleton” and “The Muhammads”!? deny that!? I think NOT. As a not so un-remarkable footnote of course, his likeness and pop-culture library of a mind were loosely the inspiration for the NBC show ‘Community’s Abed character (see GVP ep. 6 for that story). Much like myself as a kid, Abed RPGd with friends, cassette-recorded audio entertainment and was entranced by the MAGIC of Disney and Star Trek mid-90s and before… this very specific set of things all together isn’t something I share in common with A LOT of people. Feel free to join us on that ride, I really enjoyed talking about it. Today, Abed and his longtime friend Sevan Najarian hold the current title for longest running show on Frequency 101 (Channel 101’s audio-only shindig) “Enter the Dark”,and through every type of terrain it seems, Abed follows his instinct to create worlds and tell stories! Rick and Morty Season 4 Episode 5 "Rattlestar Ricklactica" finally unleashes TIME TRAVEL! How does Rick and Morty's time travel episode defy the conventional tropes of time travel fiction, with homages to the Terminator films and Back to the Future? In this analysis of Rick and Morty 4x05, Erik Voss is joined by special guests Jessica Chobot and Abed Gheith to discuss why the Rick and Morty writers finally explored a time travel plot and how they changed the rules of the universe to do so. In this episode of #Ricksplained, we dive into the deeper themes of this mid-season finale of #rickandmorty for the deeper meaning you might have overlooked, and how a snake eating its own tail is the perfect metaphor for every thinly plotted time travel story. Abed returns to the podcast for a full-length interview this time! He’s been a Channel 101 staple since almost the very beginning and has plenty of unheard stories and insider knowledge to share.
Our second episode of season two is a bit of a literary special. We have two authors joining us, Becky Albertalli and David Arnold, both writers of young adult fiction. Becky is perhaps best known for her book Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, in which the main character (Simon) is a big Elliott Smith fan. The book was recently made into a film called Love Simon. David is the New York Times bestselling author of Mosquitoland, Kids of Appetite, and The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik. He has acknowledged Elliott Smith in his work and has even quoted some of the lyrics of Coming Up Roses in one of his books. After Becky and David discuss their joint selection for their favourite Elliott song, we hear from listener Abed Gheith who has a related pick. Abed Gheith (Rick and Morty, Community) freely admits he knows more about crushes than he does about actual relationships. In this episode, Abed runs through all his biggest crushes, digressing often to comment on the movies and TV he holds dear. Hot tip: Abed is the IRL inspiration for Abed on "Community" and he's dope!
Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Yup, it’s another Mrs. Columbo. This time, with a possibly homicidal ventriloquist dummy. Writer, podcaster and roustabout Abed Gheith will return to talk about it.

Abed Gheith returns to kick off Season Ten and help decide which iconic school lunch will be this month's Manager Special. John eats lunch in the bathroom while Cullen feeds people knuckle sandwiches. Jesse finds a surprise inside his chicken patty, and Dan once fished a sandwich out of the trash can and nobody saw EXCEPT MIKE IN SECOND GRADE who just *had* to tell a lunch monitor because he's a little dirtbag.
