Dazu Cremant, selbstgebackene Apfeltarte, Knabbereien, als wäre es Weihnachten. So empfängt man Gäste in Frankreich. So empfängt jemand, der weiß, dass manche Geschichten Zeit brauchen. Manfred Schreiweis war fünf Jahre alt, als die Bombennacht über Heilbronn hereinbrach. 4. Dezember 1944. Er erinnert sich an den Fliegeralarm, an die Erschütterungen, an die Hitze. An den Morgen danach, als von der Stadt kaum noch etwas übrig war. Er erzählt von der Kindheit im Krieg, von Hunger und amerikanischen Soldaten mit Schokolade, von der Körnerstraße und der Spatzenschaukel, die umkippte. Und er erzählt von jenem Tag im Kindergarten, als er »Guten Tag« sagte – und zur Strafe in die Ecke musste. Er hatte vergessen, den Arm hochzureißen und »Heil Hitler« zu rufen. Er war fünf. Solche Bilder bleiben. Dann ist da noch die Geschichte vom Nachbarsjungen, zwölf, dreizehn Jahre alt. Nach der Bombennacht fand er seine Eltern tot im Keller. Verbrannt, durch die Hitze auf 80 Zentimeter geschrumpft. Er zog sie in einer Zinkbadewanne aus dem Haus – und zog diese Badewanne durch die zerstörte Stadt bis zum Hauptfriedhof. Ein Kind mit einer Badewanne voller Leichen. Manche Bilder erträgt man nur, weil man sie erzählt. Jahre später, 1954, war Manfred Schüler an der Dammschule. Seine Klasse sollte eine Wanderung auf den Dachstein machen. Ostern, Anfang April. Manfred wollte mit. Er war schon konfirmiert, durfte selbst entscheiden. Aber seine Mutter sagte nein. Keine Begründung, einfach nein. Aus Dankbarkeit für alles, was sie für ihn getan hatte, während und nach dem Krieg, entsprach er ihrem Wunsch. Seine Mitschüler fuhren los. Mit ihrem Lehrer Hans Georg Seiler. Am 15. April 1954 starben 13 Menschen im Schnee. Manfred Schreiweis blieb am Leben, weil seine Mutter nein sagte. Er erzählt von diesem Tag. Vom Überleben. Von den leeren Plätzen in der Klasse danach. Von der Frage, warum manche sterben und andere nicht. Vom Schweigen, das folgte. Nach der Schule ging Manfred Schreiweis weg. Lehre bei der Deutschen Bank in Heilbronn, dann mit 17 nach Belgien als Austauschvolontär bei der Bank in Brüssel. Dort lernte er, dass man Feindbilder auflösen kann. Dann zur Europäischen Gemeinschaft in Brüssel, wo er gut verdiente. Mit 21 nach Ägypten für Kolbenschmidt, mit einem 2-Millionen-Auftrag im Gepäck. Mit 24 Geschäftsführer von zwei Firmen in Belgien und Holland. Mit 28 Vorstandsvorsitzender in Straßburg. Seit 42 Jahren im Ausland. Seine Frau lernte er schon früh in Heilbronn kennen. Sie war auch bei der Bombennacht dabei, floh mit ihrer Familie nach Ilsfeld. Er ging mit seiner Mutter nach Eberbach. Später heirateten sie, lebten in Belgien, dann Holland, schließlich Frankreich. Integriert. Ohne französische Staatsbürgerschaft. Er sitzt bei Wahlen an der Urne. Hängt die französische Fahne raus, wenn Fußball ist. »Ich wohne in Frankreich. Logisch, dass ich die Marseillaise singe.« Jeden Sonntagmorgen aber trifft er sich per Zoom mit einem guten Freund aus Heilbronn. Beobachtet die Stadt aus der Ferne. Sieht, wie aus Trümmern eine Wissensstadt wurde. TUM Campus, IPAI, Experimenta – Begriffe, die er kennt, die ihn staunen lassen. »Hätte ich mir nie vorstellen können«, sagt er. Dass ausgerechnet Heilbronn, diese zerstörte, traumatisierte Stadt, mal so eine Bedeutung bekommt. Er spricht auch über die Gegenwart. Tilda Roll usually carries a can of coyote repellent with her when she walks around her neighbourhood in Vaughan, Ont. But ever since she was the target of an antisemitic incident while leaving her synagogue after Shabbat services on Jan. 6, 2024, the lawyer says she has been more afraid of running into the antisemitic attacker again, since he lives in her neighbourhood. At the time, police quickly located the suspect, and charged him with a couple of assaults—spitting on Roll and her husband, hurling Nazi threats at them and making the Heil Hitler salute—and breach of probation. After a three-day trial this March, the man was convicted, but was not held in custody. Earlier this week, on May 13, an Ontario judge sentenced Kenneth Gobin, 35, to a year in prison, with two more years of probation tacked on due to his lengthy criminal record. With the man now off the streets, Roll says she can finally begin to process what happened, including how anxious and angry the incident made her. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Tilda Roll explains how she hopes her court fight will encourage Jewish Canadians to fight back against rampant antisemitism.
